Wabash Valley College has two new faces in the Agricultural TechnologiesDepartment this year. The retirement from full-time teaching of senior facultymembers Paul Schnarre (36 years) and Don Mersinger (33 years) cre<strong>at</strong>ed twovacancies in the program, and those vacancies have been filled by SteveHnetkovsky and Doug Robb.“I look forward tobringing my knowledgeof farming,construction, and soilconserv<strong>at</strong>ion to theWVC program.”Steve Hnetkovsky received an Associ<strong>at</strong>e in Agriculture Degree from JolietJunior College, a Bachelor of Science in General Agriculture from Southern<strong>Illinois</strong> University, and a Master of Science Degree in Plant and Soil Sciencefrom SIU. He has done research work with soil and fertiliz<strong>at</strong>ion, grain farmedlocally, raised pigs, and most recently has worked in construction. Hnetkovskyhas also worked with the soil conserv<strong>at</strong>ion service. He looks forward to bringinghis knowledge of farming, construction, and soil conserv<strong>at</strong>ion to the WVCprogram. He enjoys wildlife and woodworking, and spending time with hiswife, Nixie, and their two children, K<strong>at</strong>ie 9 and Raechel 5.If you are interested in learning the basic techniques and concepts ofw<strong>at</strong>ercolor painting and letting your cre<strong>at</strong>ive juices flow, why not enroll inPainting Studio (W<strong>at</strong>ercolor) , ART 1125-32264, <strong>at</strong> Wabash Valley College.This class will allow you to learn a fun, relaxing, and rewarding hobby. They assist in promoting excellence for WVC , by securing financial support for special educ<strong>at</strong>ional and culturalactivities which are not part of the ongoing oper<strong>at</strong>ional expenses. After their first major project of purchasing the 120 acres of landwhere the campus now stands, their contributions have included not only a large number of capital developments on campus, butmany other ongoing projects, a major one being their scholarship program.Many thousands of dollars in scholarships are awarded throughout each year by the Found<strong>at</strong>ion to deserving WVC students, and in1989 the first scholarships were established to be awarded to gradu<strong>at</strong>ing WVC students who are transferring to a four-year university.This year the WVC Found<strong>at</strong>ion is pleased to announce the awarding of several scholarships which will cover tuition for one year forfirst- and second-year students enrolled <strong>at</strong> WVC. Volume 1, Issue 3On Friday, September 28, over 40 area high school ag students and ag instructors <strong>at</strong>tended the Ag TechnologyCareer Day hosted <strong>at</strong> the Wabash Valley College Agriculture Technologies Center in a joint venture with agriculturalindustry represent<strong>at</strong>ives from southern <strong>Illinois</strong> and Indiana.A common theme which the Ag Industry people covered is a need for a good work ethics educ<strong>at</strong>ion in Agricultureand computer usage such as th<strong>at</strong> which WVC’s Ag Technologies provides, as well as hands-on work experience.The presenters expressed a need for more good employees in the dynamic field of agriculture, and they are cooper<strong>at</strong>ingclosely with the WVC Agricultural Technologies Program to address this need. With good technicaltraining in agriculture <strong>at</strong> WVC and working <strong>at</strong> four different internships <strong>at</strong> various companies, students have agre<strong>at</strong> opportunity for rewarding agriculture positions in the southern <strong>Illinois</strong>/Indiana area. The class will meet in the Applied Arts Building, Room107.Instructor Paula Street will teach basic skills to do any kind of decor<strong>at</strong>ing, includingborders, color screening, flowers, decor<strong>at</strong>ive arranging, and how to use decor<strong>at</strong>ing tools.No m<strong>at</strong>erials will be needed on the first class meeting, and a m<strong>at</strong>erial list will then bedistributed.The Trip to Bountiful, a community the<strong>at</strong>re production, will runOctober 19, 20 &21. The full-length drama by Horton Foote was firstpresented on television and then produced on Broadway. The Trip toBountiful is the rarest of the<strong>at</strong>re experiences, an evening which willprove an indelible memory. This is the poignant story of Mrs. W<strong>at</strong>ts, anaging widow living with her son and daughter-in-law in a three-room fl<strong>at</strong>in Houston, Texas. Fearing th<strong>at</strong> her presence may be an imposition onothers, and chafing under the rigid and selfish supervision of herdaughter-in-law, Mrs. W<strong>at</strong>ts imagines th<strong>at</strong> if she can get away and returnto her old home in the town of Bountiful, she is sure to regain herstrength, dignity and peace of mind. So she <strong>at</strong>tempts to run away.Tickets are $6 and are available in the Brubeck Arts Center Gallery or bycalling 263-4999, extension 3480.
