Ano<strong>the</strong>r factor which comes to promote rural <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong> Valcea County are <strong>the</strong> <strong>folk</strong><strong>the</strong>med routes. Such a route is set up by <strong>the</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals <strong>in</strong> Tourism <strong>in</strong>Romania and called “Ethno-cultural and architectural routes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> historical region <strong>of</strong>Oltenia”. These actions aim at promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cultural and historical values and <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>potential <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region, promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g areas with cultural potential, which<strong>in</strong>cluded some areas from Valcea County: Novaci – Baia de Fier – Bumbe ti Pitic –Polovragi – Vaideeni – Horezu – Bistri a – B ile Govora – Francesti – Ocnele Mari –Ramnicu Valcea – Baile Ol ne ti – C lim ne ti – Câ<strong>in</strong>eni.Folk <strong>tourist</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> Valcea County, RomaniaEvery weekend and holiday, thousands <strong>of</strong> people leave <strong>the</strong>ir homes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city to go,even if for a few hours, to small rural towns that have historic or architectural appeal. Thesame behaviour can be found <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>the</strong> flow <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourist</strong>s who travel from largercoastal or urban places, ei<strong>the</strong>r as <strong>tourist</strong>s or excursionists, attracted by <strong>the</strong> characteristics <strong>of</strong>this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation.One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> characteristic features <strong>of</strong> Valcea County lies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that humansettlements have developed extremely well <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> relief. In <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> contact with <strong>the</strong>mounta<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> settlements have developed particularly <strong>in</strong> depressions which stretch fromEast to West <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> North <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> County (Lovistea, Jiblea-Berislavesti, Muiereasca,Horezu) and to <strong>the</strong> South, <strong>in</strong> particular, on <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> river valleys which have North-South direction (Govora,Otasau, Bistrita, Luncavatul, Cernisoara etc.). This concentration<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> population <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sub-Carpathian depressions is specific to <strong>the</strong>configuration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ethnographic atmosphere. Tew and Barbieri (2012) po<strong>in</strong>ted that thistype <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> which is agro<strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes recreation and leisure activities for visitorsand br<strong>in</strong>gs economic benefits for <strong>the</strong> farmers and for communitiesIn Valcea County <strong>the</strong>re are two elements that have led to <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> thisform <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong> recent years: <strong>the</strong> <strong>village</strong> and <strong>the</strong> nature. Valcea County stores a widevariety <strong>of</strong> cultural values – historic <strong>folk</strong> art, ethnography, <strong>folk</strong>lore, traditions, historicalartifacts – a natural sett<strong>in</strong>g harmoniously merged, with a varied and picturesquelandscap<strong>in</strong>g.The regional <strong>village</strong>, <strong>in</strong> general, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>-oriented one, <strong>in</strong> particular,represents a unique <strong>tourist</strong> product to <strong>the</strong> Romanian <strong>tourism</strong> market. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong><strong>tourist</strong> <strong>village</strong> from Valcea may contribute to <strong>the</strong> discovery <strong>of</strong> Valcea County – as apossible <strong>tourist</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation. The rural space from Valcea meets through its components awide range <strong>of</strong> motivations: rest and recreation, knowledge and culture, practis<strong>in</strong>g sports,air treatment or spa, hunt<strong>in</strong>g or sport fish<strong>in</strong>g, an occasion to be taken by unique andtimeless legends, customs and traditions.The rural <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>of</strong> Valcea County is a specific activity that differs from o<strong>the</strong>r forms<strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> by:attraction to natural beauties, novelty and charm <strong>of</strong> “country life”;accommodation and meals are <strong>of</strong>fered with hospitality by <strong>the</strong> locals, though <strong>the</strong>reare o<strong>the</strong>r standards than at hotels, however, <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> highest quality;recreational and/or sports appeal <strong>of</strong> holidays, trekk<strong>in</strong>g, excursions <strong>in</strong> picturesqueregions are comb<strong>in</strong>ed with excit<strong>in</strong>g experiences, determ<strong>in</strong>ed by know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> beliefs,traditions and au<strong>the</strong>ntic <strong>folk</strong>lore. Tew and Barbieri (2012) po<strong>in</strong>ted that type <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>,which is agro<strong>tourism</strong>, <strong>in</strong>cludes recreation and leisure activities for visitors and it br<strong>in</strong>gseconomic benefits for <strong>the</strong> farmers and for communities.Armand Faganel (2011) had concluded that is a s<strong>of</strong>ter way to develop susta<strong>in</strong>able<strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong> rural areas and also acts as form <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>. Agro<strong>tourism</strong> is seen as a k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong>rural <strong>tourism</strong> related to agriculture.
