THE TOURIST VILLAGE IN VALCEA – PROMOTER OF FOLKTOURISM IN ROMANIAMaria-Roxana, Doroban u 1Abstract: This paper discusses <strong>the</strong> perception, l<strong>in</strong>ks and potential <strong>of</strong><strong>folk</strong><strong>in</strong> Romania, <strong>in</strong> general, andfrom Valcea County, <strong>in</strong> particular. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this paper is to show <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k between rural <strong>tourism</strong>and<strong>folk</strong>which can help <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g this form <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>, which is rural <strong>tourism</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> paper <strong>the</strong> perceivedbenefits <strong>of</strong><strong>folk</strong>are analized by exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> this activity <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> rural<strong>tourism</strong>.This paper l<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>the</strong> changes at <strong>the</strong> local and at broader level <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural community, under <strong>the</strong>pressure <strong>of</strong> globalization, allow<strong>in</strong>g for deeper and sophisticated considerations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> that contribute torural <strong>tourism</strong> development. This paper considers <strong>the</strong> extent to which a relationship can exist between rural <strong>tourism</strong> and spiritualexperiences closely connected to <strong>the</strong><strong>folk</strong>potential.Key words rural <strong>tourism</strong>, <strong>tourist</strong> <strong>village</strong>, ethn<strong>of</strong>olklore, tradition, crafts, customsJEL Code: M311. IntroductionTourism is an activity based on <strong>the</strong> environment, so <strong>in</strong>tegrity is required. Susta<strong>in</strong>able<strong>tourism</strong> development requires meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> present <strong>tourist</strong>s, protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>environment, and <strong>tourism</strong> resources for <strong>the</strong> future. Recreation is an important part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>tourism</strong> activity, thus its development is strongly connected to <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>genvironnemnt.The title <strong>of</strong> this paper suggests a genu<strong>in</strong>e truth which is known by many people, but onlya few appreciate it at its real value: <strong>the</strong><strong>folk</strong>events (represented by <strong>the</strong> entire range <strong>of</strong> this k<strong>in</strong>d<strong>of</strong> events hosted <strong>in</strong> rural areas) perform a major role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourist</strong> <strong>village</strong>.The perenity <strong>of</strong> <strong>folk</strong> art is strongly exhibited <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> current craftsmen’s and artisans’receptiveness, cont<strong>in</strong>uators <strong>of</strong> ancient traditions, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new elements <strong>of</strong> content andexpression. In Romania, as <strong>in</strong> fact <strong>in</strong> Valcea County, we are witness<strong>in</strong>g an abstraction <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> conceptul framework and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ornamental décor, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major vision about <strong>the</strong>mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world and <strong>of</strong> our own life <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past and <strong>the</strong> present society. At <strong>the</strong> moment not all <strong>the</strong> variations that exist with regard to <strong>the</strong> forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>have developed yet. I am referr<strong>in</strong>g here to <strong>tourism</strong> for relaxation and rest, but also to <strong>the</strong><strong>tourism</strong> for knowledge <strong>of</strong> various <strong>in</strong>terest targets, as well as to <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> for w<strong>in</strong>e tast<strong>in</strong>g,because <strong>the</strong>re are many opportunities related to agricultural products <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various areas <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> country. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with rural <strong>tourism</strong> development, o<strong>the</strong>r economic activities develop <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> respective areas, such as butcher’s shops, candy stores, handicrafts and all sorts <strong>of</strong> suchsmall lucrative related enterprises.Proper management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural <strong>tourism</strong> by all stakeholders <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> this activitycould br<strong>in</strong>g multiple benefits. They could <strong>in</strong>clude creat<strong>in</strong>g prerequisites for better liv<strong>in</strong>gstandards <strong>in</strong> rural areas, but also <strong>the</strong> “sett<strong>in</strong>g” <strong>of</strong> young people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se areas by provid<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong>m opportunities to get jobs and to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a family. In this way, <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> emigration isreduced, because at present many young people from rural areas go abroad <strong>in</strong> search <strong>of</strong> betterjobs. Ano<strong>the</strong>r opportunity is given by <strong>the</strong> fact that Romania is now <strong>in</strong> trend, and manyeuropeans are keen to come here and know <strong>the</strong> beauties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country. The Romanian <strong>tourist</strong> <strong>village</strong> is an orig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>tourist</strong> product equally for <strong>the</strong> nationaland <strong>in</strong>ternational market. Among <strong>the</strong>se, I canmention: <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourist</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation and promotion centres is very low, <strong>the</strong> major<strong>tourist</strong> areas do not have <strong>tourist</strong> services (North <strong>of</strong> Oltenia, Hateg and Salaj areas), cultural<strong>tourism</strong> without funds, promotion <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> aims at <strong>the</strong> already popular <strong>tourist</strong> objectivesand regions, leav<strong>in</strong>g aside centres and regions equally valuable, <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> communicationbetween <strong>the</strong> Government and <strong>the</strong> private sector discourage <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> culturaldest<strong>in</strong>ations.2. Research MethodologyThe research objectives were:The purpose <strong>of</strong> this research was to explore <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>of</strong><strong>folk</strong>potential <strong>in</strong> Valceacounty, a place where <strong>tourist</strong>s participate <strong>in</strong> nature-based activities located <strong>in</strong> rural areas; It focuses <strong>in</strong> particular on <strong>the</strong> characteristics and particularities <strong>of</strong><strong>folk</strong><strong>tourism</strong> and<strong>of</strong><strong>folk</strong>events that take place <strong>in</strong> <strong>tourist</strong> <strong>village</strong>s from Valcea County.3. Ethnographical context <strong>of</strong> Valcea CountyThe rural space <strong>of</strong> Valcea County has great variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> resources. It alsobenefits from a strong tradition and a millenary culture. The traditions and<strong>folk</strong>values(popular architecture, customs and traditions, <strong>folk</strong> costumes, etc.) constitute <strong>the</strong> ruralambience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole rural environment <strong>in</strong> Valcea.Traditions are those which br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to light <strong>the</strong> national specificity, <strong>the</strong> popularculture which <strong>in</strong>cludes music, dance, crafts, traditional cuis<strong>in</strong>e as well as certa<strong>in</strong> specialskills.Romanian traditions represent <strong>the</strong> Romanians at home and <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourist</strong> <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> acountry like Romania, look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Romanian <strong>village</strong>s for picturesque mounta<strong>in</strong> spots, riversides, look<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>in</strong>estimabile religious and cultural legacies with old traditionsvalued and respected at european level and <strong>in</strong>ternationally.A well-preserved <strong>tourism</strong> is <strong>the</strong> one which preserves <strong>in</strong>tact traditions and customs,prevent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> various forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>folk</strong> polltion by <strong>the</strong> fact that each year <strong>the</strong> traditions are <strong>the</strong>same and are at <strong>the</strong> same time renewed as<strong>folk</strong><strong>tourism</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> force <strong>the</strong> tradition is that <strong>the</strong><strong>tourist</strong> from o<strong>the</strong>r countries can learn, understand and popularize <strong>the</strong> Romanian specificity. The social life <strong>of</strong> rural communities is carried out <strong>in</strong> accordance with a specific toolfor measur<strong>in</strong>g time, show<strong>in</strong>g agreement with a variety <strong>of</strong> human concerns suchas<strong>folk</strong>events. These b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs are evidenced by multiple celebrations and rituals specific to<strong>the</strong> Romanian people. The whole range <strong>of</strong> <strong>folk</strong> events is based on <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> three different calendars:62

- civil calendar, with two periods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year: each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two periods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> yearwhen <strong>the</strong> Sun is at <strong>the</strong> highest height <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>the</strong> Equator; dates correspond<strong>in</strong>g to<strong>the</strong>se moments (21 June and 22 December), mark<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> longest day or shortest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>year, phases <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Moon and o<strong>the</strong>r astronomical or meteorological events;- church calendar, <strong>in</strong> order to keep <strong>the</strong> christian good order. The holidays related to<strong>the</strong> conduct <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> religious calendar are known especially for <strong>the</strong> celebration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Archangels, Apostles, Sa<strong>in</strong>ts, which represent many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> monasteries and worshiptemple, Christmas, Easter or ceremonies connected with <strong>the</strong> events <strong>in</strong> our life- popular calendar, with deep roots <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient Dacian-Roman history, whichshowed <strong>the</strong> most favourable periods for <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> agricultural and pastoraloccupations, specify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> celebration and customiz<strong>in</strong>g certa<strong>in</strong> special practices. In addition to <strong>the</strong> elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>folk</strong>lore, culture or tradition, <strong>the</strong> geographical areaconstitutes a means <strong>of</strong> attract<strong>in</strong>g <strong>tourist</strong>s lovers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> countryside, <strong>in</strong> particular urban<strong>tourist</strong>s who want to escape from a polluted and crowded environment toward a peacefuland natural environment such as nature. Valcea County can meet by its rich naturalresources <strong>the</strong> highest demands and preferences <strong>of</strong> such <strong>tourist</strong>s.Valcea County is a well-packaged region <strong>in</strong> Romanian popular culture. Itsethnocultural specificity can be def<strong>in</strong>ed by three dimensions.First, it is situated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> North-East <strong>of</strong> Oltenia region (<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> two largehistorical prov<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> Wallachia and Transylvania), thus represent<strong>in</strong>g a land <strong>of</strong> <strong>folk</strong>traditions <strong>in</strong>terference. Then, Valcea County has experienced s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> medieval period, apermanent dialogue between oral <strong>folk</strong> culture cultivared <strong>in</strong> <strong>village</strong>s – hearths <strong>of</strong> peasanttradition – and <strong>the</strong> written culture practiced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> monasteries. A third po<strong>in</strong>t refers toValcea as keeper <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> archaic culture, an area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relationship betweentradition and modernity, open to <strong>in</strong>novation.All <strong>the</strong>se three dimensions give Valcea County <strong>the</strong> etnocultural status <strong>of</strong> a space forcreative development <strong>of</strong> tradition, which is expressed by a vivid heritage, <strong>of</strong> strongau<strong>the</strong>nticity and strik<strong>in</strong>g orig<strong>in</strong>ality, which <strong>the</strong> tradistion keepers pass on from generationto generation, as an endur<strong>in</strong>g legacy.Viable and productive, <strong>folk</strong> traditions become, <strong>in</strong> modernity, marks <strong>of</strong> Valcea’scultural identity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Romanian and European context. This reality is <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> acultural strategy grafted on <strong>the</strong> <strong>folk</strong> tradition“school”.Through its creations and traditions –identity brands <strong>of</strong> spirituality, <strong>the</strong> <strong>folk</strong> culture <strong>in</strong>Valcea County has enough data that provide it with <strong>the</strong> ability to enter <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> concert andtour <strong>of</strong> European cultural values. The regional <strong>folk</strong>lore is characterized by great richness and diversity, <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>assimilation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> confluences with <strong>the</strong> neighbour<strong>in</strong>g areas and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> creative syn<strong>the</strong>siswhich confers an orig<strong>in</strong>al mark <strong>in</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>astern Oltenia. Traditional <strong>folk</strong> life is stillvigorous <strong>in</strong> Valcea, manifest<strong>in</strong>g itself <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> two ma<strong>in</strong> classes <strong>of</strong> (calendar and family)habits, which represent viable means <strong>of</strong> cultivat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>folk</strong> songs and dances.Valcea County falls by its geographical situation and a series <strong>of</strong> elements <strong>of</strong><strong>folk</strong>lorical and spiritual culture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wider region <strong>of</strong> Oltenia. Through <strong>the</strong> configuration<strong>of</strong> settlements by develop<strong>in</strong>g trade and opposed by popular artistic creativity, Valceacharacteristics <strong>of</strong> a dist<strong>in</strong>ct ethnographic areas with a <strong>folk</strong> art that has, like <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong>Romania, ancient traditions and rigorous, which took over <strong>the</strong> common features <strong>in</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>rso <strong>the</strong> whole arts <strong>folk</strong>-tales, and features orig<strong>in</strong>al, unpublished and orig<strong>in</strong>al forms <strong>of</strong>expression which def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir own charactersspecific63

The regional <strong>folk</strong> creation has met specific crystallizations, both <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceremonial<strong>folk</strong>lore and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> literary, musical and choregraphic one. Among <strong>the</strong> types <strong>of</strong> ceremonial<strong>folk</strong>lore, Valcea County excels <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>folk</strong> carols and songs. Ano<strong>the</strong>r factor which comes to promote rural <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong> Valcea County are <strong>the</strong> <strong>folk</strong><strong>the</strong>med routes. Such a route is set up by <strong>the</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals <strong>in</strong> Tourism <strong>in</strong>Romania and called “Ethno-cultural and architectural routes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> historical region <strong>of</strong>Oltenia”. These actions aim at promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cultural and historical values and <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>potential <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region, promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g areas with cultural potential, which<strong>in</strong>cluded some areas from Valcea County: Novaci – Baia de Fier – Bumbe ti Pitic –Polovragi – Vaideeni – Horezu – Bistri a – B ile Govora – Francesti – Ocnele Mari –Ramnicu Valcea – Baile Ol ne ti – C lim ne ti – Câ<strong>in</strong>eni.Folk <strong>tourist</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> Valcea County, RomaniaEvery weekend and holiday, thousands <strong>of</strong> people leave <strong>the</strong>ir homes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city to go,even if for a few hours, to small rural towns that have historic or architectural appeal. Thesame behaviour can be found <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>the</strong> flow <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourist</strong>s who travel from largercoastal or urban places, ei<strong>the</strong>r as <strong>tourist</strong>s or excursionists, attracted by <strong>the</strong> characteristics <strong>of</strong>this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation.One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> characteristic features <strong>of</strong> Valcea County lies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that humansettlements have developed extremely well <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> relief. In <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> contact with <strong>the</strong>mounta<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> settlements have developed particularly <strong>in</strong> depressions which stretch fromEast to West <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> North <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> County (Lovistea, Jiblea-Berislavesti, Muiereasca,Horezu) and to <strong>the</strong> South, <strong>in</strong> particular, on <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> river valleys which have North-South direction (Govora,Otasau, Bistrita, Luncavatul, Cernisoara etc.). This concentration<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> population <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sub-Carpathian depressions is specific to <strong>the</strong>configuration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ethnographic atmosphere. Tew and Barbieri (2012) po<strong>in</strong>ted that thistype <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> which is agro<strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes recreation and leisure activities for visitorsand br<strong>in</strong>gs economic benefits for <strong>the</strong> farmers and for communitiesIn Valcea County <strong>the</strong>re are two elements that have led to <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> thisform <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong> recent years: <strong>the</strong> <strong>village</strong> and <strong>the</strong> nature. Valcea County stores a widevariety <strong>of</strong> cultural values – historic <strong>folk</strong> art, ethnography, <strong>folk</strong>lore, traditions, historicalartifacts – a natural sett<strong>in</strong>g harmoniously merged, with a varied and picturesquelandscap<strong>in</strong>g.The regional <strong>village</strong>, <strong>in</strong> general, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>-oriented one, <strong>in</strong> particular, represents a unique <strong>tourist</strong> product to <strong>the</strong> Romanian <strong>tourism</strong> market. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong><strong>tourist</strong> <strong>village</strong> from Valcea may contribute to <strong>the</strong> discovery <strong>of</strong> Valcea County – as apossible <strong>tourist</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation. The rural space from Valcea meets through its components awide range <strong>of</strong> motivations: rest and recreation, knowledge and culture, practis<strong>in</strong>g sports, air treatment or spa, hunt<strong>in</strong>g or sport fish<strong>in</strong>g, an occasion to be taken by unique andtimeless legends, customs and traditions. The rural <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>of</strong> Valcea County is a specific activity that differs from o<strong>the</strong>r forms<strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> by:attraction to natural beauties, novelty and charm <strong>of</strong> “country life”;accommodation and meals are <strong>of</strong>fered with hospitality by <strong>the</strong> locals, though <strong>the</strong>reare o<strong>the</strong>r standards than at hotels, however, <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> highest quality;recreational and/or sports appeal <strong>of</strong> holidays, trekk<strong>in</strong>g, excursions <strong>in</strong> picturesqueregions are comb<strong>in</strong>ed with excit<strong>in</strong>g experiences, determ<strong>in</strong>ed by know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> beliefs, traditions and au<strong>the</strong>ntic <strong>folk</strong>lore. Tew and Barbieri (2012) po<strong>in</strong>ted that type <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>,which is agro<strong>tourism</strong>, <strong>in</strong>cludes recreation and leisure activities for visitors and it br<strong>in</strong>gseconomic benefits for <strong>the</strong> farmers and for communities.Armand Faganel (2011) had concluded that is a s<strong>of</strong>ter way to develop susta<strong>in</strong>able<strong>tourism</strong> <strong>in</strong> rural areas and also acts as form <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong>. Agro<strong>tourism</strong> is seen as a k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong>rural <strong>tourism</strong> related to agriculture. Visitors become acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with a cultural landscape,66

local products, traditional cuis<strong>in</strong>e and people’s daily life, as well as <strong>the</strong> cultural elementsand <strong>the</strong> au<strong>the</strong>ntic features <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area, while show<strong>in</strong>g respect for <strong>the</strong> environment and fortradition.Valcea area is <strong>in</strong> full development <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> rural <strong>tourism</strong>, especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> North<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> county where <strong>the</strong>re are most guesthouses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> County.Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> settlement <strong>of</strong> <strong>village</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> Valcea County we meet <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<strong>village</strong>s:Ethnographic and <strong>folk</strong> <strong>tourist</strong> <strong>village</strong>s – where traditional costumes, architectureand <strong>in</strong>terior decoration <strong>of</strong> houses predom<strong>in</strong>ate and become essential features. Examples <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>se k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>village</strong>s: Vaideeni, Coste ti, Sl tioara, Pietrari, Ro iile, Nicolae B lcescu;Tourist <strong>village</strong>s <strong>of</strong> artistic creation and craft – Olari <strong>village</strong> from Horezu,Maldaresti, Tomsani, Pietrari. These <strong>village</strong>s present <strong>in</strong>terest to <strong>tourist</strong>s due to <strong>the</strong>irimportance for artistic creativity, craft, where under <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> <strong>folk</strong> craftsmen <strong>the</strong>ymight become <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong> archaic <strong>folk</strong> art and techniques.Tourist mounta<strong>in</strong> <strong>village</strong>s – Malaia, Vaideeni, Bradisor, Runcu – provide<strong>tourist</strong>s with conditions for <strong>the</strong> practis<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>ter and summer sports;Pastoral <strong>tourist</strong> <strong>village</strong>s –<strong>in</strong> general <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong> <strong>village</strong>s might be <strong>in</strong>cluded -Vaideeni, Malaia, Alunu, Tisa, Gurguiata, Pleasa, whose ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>tourist</strong> attraction are <strong>the</strong>dairy-based menus, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourist</strong>s can participate <strong>in</strong> various sheepfold activities;Tourist uval <strong>village</strong>s from Dragasani area (Stefanesti, Orlesti, Ionesti) – where<strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> has a permanent character as <strong>tourist</strong> activities are conducted andafter harvest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fruit, <strong>the</strong>re can be direct consumption <strong>of</strong> products obta<strong>in</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong>process<strong>in</strong>g;Cultural- monastic <strong>tourist</strong> <strong>village</strong>s – Costesti, Barbatesti, Slatiora, Stanisoara,Francesti (where “Manastirea d<strong>in</strong>t-un lemn” is), Cornetu, Boisoara, Iezer, visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>monasteries and <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>gs be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> form <strong>of</strong> enterta<strong>in</strong>ment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area. The follow<strong>in</strong>g ideas can be drawn from <strong>the</strong> above:- that regional <strong>folk</strong>lore is not only a component <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural <strong>tourism</strong>, but it also haslarge implications <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> best use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local <strong>tourist</strong> resources;- it contributes to improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> standard <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> socioeconomicdevelopment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural <strong>village</strong>;- and last but not least it contributes to promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> regional <strong>tourism</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer.The changes that have taken place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> contemporary <strong>village</strong> life have led to a vastprocess <strong>of</strong> renewal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> popular artistic creation. Along with <strong>the</strong> songs and traditionalhabits, new items, which are <strong>the</strong> expression <strong>of</strong> life, feel<strong>in</strong>gs and ideas what animates ourpeople today. It is <strong>the</strong>refore necessary that recovery <strong>folk</strong>lore to take <strong>in</strong>to account firstly <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> elements which are more updated news. Recovery <strong>folk</strong>lore raises difficult problems <strong>in</strong>terms <strong>of</strong> penetration <strong>of</strong> modern communication and urban <strong>in</strong>fluences. In order to preservetraditional values and <strong>the</strong> unadulterated spiritual Fund and to revitalize <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong>creation, <strong>the</strong> animators <strong>of</strong> life hosted cultural-artistic regional operation shall ensure that afruitful activity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> circuit between <strong>the</strong> hearth and home and <strong>folk</strong> cultural scene.4. ConclusionsThe aim <strong>of</strong> this paper was to explore <strong>the</strong> extent to which rural <strong>tourist</strong>s <strong>in</strong> ValceaCounty benefit from <strong>the</strong> <strong>folk</strong> potential, considered to be a spiritual or transcendentalexperience. It is clear from <strong>the</strong> research, <strong>the</strong>re is no doubt that <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourist</strong> experiences <strong>in</strong>Valcea County acquire some form <strong>of</strong> spiritual fulfillment.Susta<strong>in</strong>able development <strong>of</strong> <strong>tourism</strong> does not act brutally aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> environment,keep<strong>in</strong>g it unaltered. Through <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> rural <strong>tourism</strong> areas, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to account<strong>the</strong> best type <strong>of</strong> accommodation, <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> belief that <strong>the</strong>re will be no negative effects on67

<strong>the</strong> environment, and <strong>the</strong> natural resources will be used rationally. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, migration to <strong>the</strong> city, <strong>the</strong> modernisation <strong>of</strong> labour <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> agricultural sector, <strong>the</strong> changescaused by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g competition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural world by enlarg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> free ruralcommunity market have a counterpart <strong>in</strong> rural <strong>tourism</strong>. The activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> rural<strong>tourism</strong> can boost <strong>the</strong> <strong>village</strong>s’ economy, if <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>habitants’ benevolent attitude (toreceive and accept <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir midst <strong>the</strong> wave <strong>of</strong> prodigal and pretentious guests) is receivedfavorably. With a cultural heritage so rich and valuable, Romania could be an importantdest<strong>in</strong>ation on <strong>the</strong> cultural <strong>tourism</strong> world map. The lack <strong>of</strong> adequate <strong>in</strong>frastructure, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>transport sector <strong>in</strong> particular, <strong>the</strong> questionable quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>tourist</strong> services and, last butnot least, <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> more aggressive advertis<strong>in</strong>g and better centered campaigns are justsome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> causes that determ<strong>in</strong>e Romania’s peripheral position as a <strong>tourist</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong>Europe.Bibliography1.
