The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pittsburgh</strong>’s Oakland campus.provides housing to more than 7,000 undergraduatestudents. Our students come from avariety <strong>of</strong> backgrounds and lifestyles, and theymake a major contribution to the multiculturalrichness and diversity <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> community.The “out-<strong>of</strong>-classroom” experiences that come withliving on our urban campus are an important part<strong>of</strong> the education students receive at Pitt.<strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Hall</strong>sThis brochure provides a snapshot <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> the<strong>University</strong>’s 13 residence halls and an overview <strong>of</strong> theservices we provide to the students living in them. Weequip every room in each <strong>of</strong> our 13 residence halls withthe fundamental amenities <strong>of</strong> contemporary student life,from furniture to telephone, cable TV, and online networkaccess. We have created many special <strong>Living</strong> Communitiesto provide appropriate residential environments forstudents who share special academic or personalinterests. Resident directors and resident assistantsprovide guidance and services to the students living ineach residence hall. Students can also call, stop in, orlog on to <strong>Panther</strong> <strong>Central</strong> at www.pc.pitt.edu any time<strong>of</strong> the day or night for answers to their questions abouton-campus living.Apartment-style AccommodationsUpperclass students also can choose to live in apartmentstyleaccommodations. The <strong>University</strong> has five apartmentstyleliving facilities: Bouquet Gardens, Centre PlazaApartments, Forbes Craig Apartments, Oakwood Apartments,and newly renovated Ruskin <strong>Hall</strong>. Accommodating one t<strong>of</strong>our students, apartment-style configurations includecombined dining and living areas and kitchens.2For more detailed information on the <strong>University</strong>’sresidential services and policies, please refer to theResidential Handbook or visit www.pc.pitt.edu.


<strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> ServicesFurnishings and MaintenanceThe <strong>University</strong> furnishes each residence hall room with carpeting, a twin-size bed,mattress, desk, chair, dresser, wardrobe or closet, telephone, and windowcurtains or blinds. Students will need to provide their own desk lamps and .bed linens.We also equip each residence hall bedroom with telephone service, cableTV service, and individual Ethernet connections that link directly to the <strong>University</strong>network. Telephone service includes voice mail and call waiting at no cost to you, .and unlimited local on-campus calling. Cable TV service includes basic channels.Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms and private bathrooms. Ourhousekeeping staff cleans communal bathrooms, lounges, hallways, and stairwells.For emergency repairs and maintenance problems, students should call <strong>Panther</strong> <strong>Central</strong>immediately. For routine maintenance, simply fill out an online maintenance request at the<strong>Panther</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Community at my.pitt.edu. Students also can submit an online requestat www.pc.pitt.edu.LaundryEach residence hall has washers and dryers that operate with<strong>Panther</strong> Funds and there are a few residence halls that havemachines that operate with coins as well.Resident Directors and Resident AssistantsA resident director (RD) is on staff in each residence hall to assiststudents with educational, recreational, and disciplinary issues. In addition, residentassistants (RAs) also live on most floors in the residence halls. RAs are upperclassstudents eager to help by sharing their knowledge and experience.Resident Student AssociationThe Resident Student Association (RSA) is the governing body <strong>of</strong> students who live inthe residence halls. The RSA provides input to the <strong>University</strong> on any and all aspects <strong>of</strong>on-campus life.SecurityEach residence hall has a security desk staffed around the clock. When entering theirresidence halls, students must have the desk attendant swipe their <strong>Panther</strong> Cardsthrough a card reader to verify their residence in that building. Your <strong>Panther</strong> Card isprogrammed to provide access only to your own residence hall. <strong>Residence</strong> hall visitorsalso must present a photo ID. The security staff in each residence hall enforces the<strong>University</strong>’s visitation and alcohol policies. You can find these policies spelled out in theResidential Handbook. Special <strong>Living</strong> CommunitiesWithin several residence halls, we have designated floors as special <strong>Living</strong> Communities. Thesefloors are for students who wish to live with others who share a special academic or personalinterest. In most cases there are women’s floors and men’s floors available. Amos <strong>Hall</strong>Amos <strong>Hall</strong> is part <strong>of</strong> the Schenley Quadrangle and housesnine sororities. The 135 upperclass women residents live insuites featuring a kitchen, private bathrooms, living roomsand chapter room. Laundry facilities are located on eachfloor. Amos <strong>Hall</strong> also features a fitness center that is availableto all residents <strong>of</strong> the Schenley Quadrangle. A PNC Bankbranch on the street level <strong>of</strong>fers student banking servicesand a convenient ATM that is available around the clock.Amos <strong>Hall</strong> is supported by the resident director and residentassistants residing in Holland <strong>Hall</strong>.Thyrsa Wealtheow Amos served as thefirst dean <strong>of</strong> women at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Pittsburgh</strong> from 1919 to 1941.5


Brackenridge <strong>Hall</strong>In 1787 Hugh Henry Brackenridgefounded the <strong>Pittsburgh</strong> Academy,which later evolved into the <strong>University</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>Pittsburgh</strong>. The academy was thefirst institution <strong>of</strong> learning west <strong>of</strong>the Alleghenies chartered by thePennsylvania Legislature.Brackenridge <strong>Hall</strong> is part <strong>of</strong> the Schenley Quadrangle. It houses210 mostly upperclass men and women in four- and five-personsuites; there is limited availability for first-year students. Eachsuite features a MicroFridge and a private bathroom. There arealso a few single and double rooms in Brackenridge <strong>Hall</strong> thatdo not include a MicroFridge. Laundry facilities are located .in the penthouse. The Pitt Shop is on the lowest level <strong>of</strong>Brackenridge, accessible from Forbes Avenue.A resident director and program coordinator and 9 residentassistants are on staff for the Schenley Quadrangle.6


Bruce <strong>Hall</strong>Bruce <strong>Hall</strong> is part <strong>of</strong> the Schenley Quadrangle. It houses 212mostly upperclass men and women in four- and six-personsuites. Each suite features a kitchenette with refrigeratorand one or more private bathrooms. Laundry facilities are onall floors. The UPS Store and a 7-11 convenience store are onthe lowest level <strong>of</strong> Bruce <strong>Hall</strong>, accessible from Forbes Avenue.A resident director and program coordinator and 9 residentassistants are on staff for the Schenley Quadrangle.The Reverend Robert Bruce servedfrom 1822 to 1835 as the firstchancellor <strong>of</strong> the Western <strong>University</strong><strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania, which later becamethe <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pittsburgh</strong>.7


Edward A. Litchfield TowersThe Litchfield Towers comprisethe largest residential complex onthe Pitt campus. The three towersaccommodate 1,868 men andwomen in air-conditioned singlesand doubles. The lobby <strong>of</strong> the threetowers houses a variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fices andfacilities including <strong>Panther</strong> <strong>Central</strong>, astudent mail center, a fitness center,laundry facilities, vending machines,e-mail kiosks, and Common Groundsc<strong>of</strong>fee cart. The Market <strong>Central</strong>dining facility is located on the lowerlevel, as well as a Taco Bell and QuickZone convenience store. A skywalkfrom the lobby spans Forbes Avenue,providing convenient access to theacademic buildings south <strong>of</strong> Forbes.Litchfield Tower ATower A houses 664 men and women, mostly first-year students.All rooms are air-conditioned doubles. There are communalbathrooms and showers on each floor. A TV/study lounge is onevery third floor.The Engineering <strong>Living</strong> Learning Communities for first-yearmen and women are in Tower A. A resident director, a programcoordinator, and 17 resident assistants are on staff.Edward Litchfield served from1956 to 1965 as the 12thchancellor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Pittsburgh</strong>. He was recognizedfor enhancing the <strong>University</strong>’sgraduate and research faculty.10


Litchfield Tower BTower B is the largest <strong>of</strong> the three Litchfield Towers. It houses769 men and women, primarily first-year students, in airconditioneddouble rooms. There are communal bathrooms andshowers on each floor. A TV/study lounge is on every third floor.A resident director, a program coordinator, and 20 residentassistants are on staff.11


Litchfield Tower CTower C houses 435 men and women, both first-year andupperclass students, in air-conditioned single rooms. There arecommunal bathrooms and showers on each floor. A TV/studylounge is on every third floor.Tower C has Quiet <strong>Living</strong> floors for women and men. A residentdirector, a program coordinator, and 14 resident assistants areon staff.12


Lothrop <strong>Hall</strong>Lothrop <strong>Hall</strong> is a unique residence facility in the heart <strong>of</strong> the<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pittsburgh</strong>’s renowned medical center, about threeblocks from the Litchfield Towers. Lothrop <strong>Hall</strong> houses 723 menand women, both first-year and upperclass students, mostly insingles and a few doubles. Most rooms are equipped with a .sink, and each wing has a communal bathroom and shower .on each floor.Sylvanus Lothrop was a prominentengineer and businessman whoconstructed the first locks andseveral major bridges on theMonongahela River in the 1830sand 1840s.Lothrop <strong>Hall</strong> contains the Nursing <strong>Living</strong> Learning Communityand the Health Sciences <strong>Living</strong> Learning Community (one forfirst-year students, one for upper-class students). A skywalkconnects Lothrop to the School <strong>of</strong> Nursing in the Victoria Buildingand adjoining <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pittsburgh</strong> Medical Center facilities.A resident director, a program coordinator, and 15 residentassistants are on staff.13


McCormick <strong>Hall</strong>McCormick <strong>Hall</strong>, located in the Schenley Quadrangle, houses132 mostly upperclass men and women in three-, six-, andseven-person suites. Each suite features a kitchenette witha microwave and refrigerator as well as one or more privatebathrooms. Laundry facilities are in the penthouse. AdjoiningMcCormick <strong>Hall</strong> is the William Pitt Union.A resident director and program coordinator and 9 residentassistants are on staff for the Schenley Quadrangle.Samuel Black McCormick served asthe ninth chancellor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>from 1904 to 1920. During his tenurethe <strong>University</strong> bought 43 acres inOakland and moved to the site <strong>of</strong> thecurrent campus.14


<strong>Panther</strong> <strong>Hall</strong>The newest residence hall, <strong>of</strong>fering amazing views <strong>of</strong> the campusand surrounding areas, is <strong>Panther</strong> <strong>Hall</strong>, located on the uppercampus and housing 511 men and women, primarily upperclassstudents. These air-conditioned rooms are a combination <strong>of</strong> threepersonand five-person suites, and doubles with private baths.There is an open lounge, a study area, and laundry facilities onevery floor. The commons area contains the Thirst & 10 c<strong>of</strong>fee cart,a meeting room, fitness room, and student mail center.<strong>Panther</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> was constructed onthe site <strong>of</strong> the former Pitt Stadium.The site is now home to thePetersen Events Center, two newlyconstructed residence halls, andgreen space for student use.This building houses six <strong>Living</strong> Learning Communities: CivicEngagement and Community Service, Entrepreneurial, MulticulturalAffairs, Natural Science Researchers, Social Science Research,and Upper-class Engineering. A resident director, a programcoordinator, and 10 resident assistants are on staff.15


Pennsylvania <strong>Hall</strong>Pennsylvania <strong>Hall</strong>, located on the upper campus adjacent tothe Petersen Events Center, <strong>of</strong>fers striking views <strong>of</strong> Oakland.Pennsylvania <strong>Hall</strong> houses 420 men and women, primarilyupperclass students, in air-conditioned four-person suitesand doubles with private baths. An open lounge and laundryfacilities are on every floor, and the commons area contains ThePennsylvania Perk c<strong>of</strong>fee cart, a fitness center, meeting room,and student mail center.The original Pennsylvania <strong>Hall</strong>,formerly on this site, was built in1911 as a School <strong>of</strong> Medicine classroombuilding. Pitt’s medical school,where Jonas Salk developed hismiraculous polio vaccine, is consideredto be one <strong>of</strong> the best in the country.Pennsylvania <strong>Hall</strong> houses four <strong>Living</strong> Learning Communities:French Language and Culture, Italian Language and Culture,Leadership, and Pre-Law. A resident director, a programcoordinator, and seven resident assistants are on staff.16


Sutherland <strong>Hall</strong>From 1924 to 1939 John Bain“Jock” Sutherland was the<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pittsburgh</strong>’s headfootball coach and arguably thebest football coach <strong>of</strong> his time.Sutherland <strong>Hall</strong> is located adjacent to the Petersen Events Centeron the upper campus, next to the major athletic facilities, andprovides a view <strong>of</strong> the entire <strong>University</strong>. Sutherland <strong>Hall</strong> houses737 men and women, primarily first-year students. The airconditionedrooms are mostly doubles with semi-private baths.There is a TV lounge or study room on each floor. The East andWest wings <strong>of</strong> Sutherland <strong>Hall</strong> share a commons area comprisingThe Perch at Sutherland dining facility, Hill O’Beans c<strong>of</strong>fee cart,Quick Zone convenience store, a computer center, and a studentmail center. There is a fitness center, laundry facility, and meetingrooms on the ground floor <strong>of</strong> each wing.The College <strong>of</strong> Business Administration and Global Village <strong>Living</strong>Learning Communities are located in Sutherland <strong>Hall</strong>. A residentdirector, an assistant hall director, a program coordinator, and .15 resident assistants are on staff.17


Apartment-style AccommodationsUpperclass students can choose apartment-style accommodations,which <strong>of</strong>fer a more independent living environment withmodified services and amenities. Accommodating one to fourstudents, apartment-style configurations include combined .dining and living areas and kitchens. Each air-conditionedunit is furnished and includes foursingle bedrooms, a kitchen, livingroom and dining area, and two bathrooms.Parking is not available atBouquet Gardens.18


Centre Plaza ApartmentsLocated in North Oakland, the .67 units in the Centre PlazaApartments house 197 students. .The air-conditioned, furnishedapartments each house from one to .three students. The kitchens includemicrowaves, disposals, and dinettes,as well as refrigerators, stoves, anddishwashers. High speed internet isnow available in every apartment.Some student parking is available.Forbes Craig ApartmentsApartment-style AccommodationsLocated across from the CarnegieMuseum <strong>of</strong> Art, the Forbes CraigApartments house the <strong>University</strong>Honors College community. The 39furnished apartments accommodate102 upperclass students in single .and double bedrooms. One <strong>University</strong>Honors College staff member residesin the building. Oakwood ApartmentsThe Oakwood Apartments are locatedbetween Oakland Avenue and AtwoodStreet, only a few blocks from thecenter <strong>of</strong> campus. The 18 furnishedunits house 40 students in singleand double bedrooms. Some studentparking is available.Apartment-style AccommodationsRuskin <strong>Hall</strong>Ruskin <strong>Hall</strong> is located near theCathedral <strong>of</strong> Learning on the easternedge <strong>of</strong> campus. Newly renovated,Ruskin <strong>Hall</strong> houses 416 students inone-, two-, and three-person apartmentsand single-person efficiencyapartments. The air-conditioned,furnished apartments include privatebaths and kitchens with a refrigerator,stove, microwave, and dishwasher.Parking is not available at Ruskin <strong>Hall</strong>.20


The Housing Application ProcessGuaranteed <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> <strong>Living</strong>The <strong>University</strong> guarantees housing for three years to all qualified firstyear,prospective freshmen who are admitted for the fall term and paytheir $300 enrollment fee by May 1st and their $325 housing deposit bytheir corresponding assigned deadline. This guarantee is good for threeyears provided that all housing application and deposit deadlines in eachsubsequent year are met.First-year students who pay their deposits after the deadline will lose theirhousing guarantee and will be assigned rooms as they become available.Choosing Your Room and RoommateWhen you complete your Housing/Dining Services contract, you can .indicate the type <strong>of</strong> accommodation you desire. Although we will make .a sincere effort to satisfy your request, we are not always able to grant .your first preference.If you wish to request a particular roommate, you must both list eachother on your applications. If we do not receive your applications withina reasonable period <strong>of</strong> time, we cannot guarantee that we will be ableto honor your roommate preference.
