S. O. A. R.<strong>Sheriff</strong>’s <strong>Office</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> Retirees’S(<strong>the</strong> <strong>Sheriff</strong>’s <strong>Office</strong> Association <strong>of</strong>SOAR Retirees) purpose is to promote fellowshipbetween members, keep abreast<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current advancements being madewithin <strong>the</strong> agency and to render voluntaryassistance to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sheriff</strong>’s <strong>Office</strong>.The organization was formed in March<strong>of</strong> 1980 when several retirees formed anorganization that would allow retireesto meet on a regular basis. At <strong>the</strong> firstga<strong>the</strong>ring, 34 retirees met at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Monroe</strong><strong>County</strong> Jail, created by-laws and selecteda nominating committee consisting<strong>of</strong> retired Investigator Jeanette Ferraro,retired Major Norman Doe and retiredSergeant Carl Clapp.On January 6, 1981, retired CriminalInvestigation Division InvestigatorJeanette Ferraro was elected as <strong>the</strong> firstPresident <strong>of</strong> S.O.A.R. O<strong>the</strong>r executive<strong>of</strong>ficers were retired Sergeant RobertS.O.A.R. Mission StatementTo honor those who have served<strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> <strong>Monroe</strong> <strong>County</strong>,New York thru <strong>the</strong>ir pr<strong>of</strong>essionaldedicated work within <strong>the</strong> Civil,Court, Jail, Police & StaffServices Bureaus which guidesour purpose to promote comradelyand fellowship between membersand to stay current on thoseactivities which enrich <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong>current and retired members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Monroe</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Sheriff</strong>’s <strong>Office</strong>.Crowder (Vice-President), Marge Sodeman (Secretary) andEdward Sadden (Treasurer).Through annual luncheons, dinners andpicnics, <strong>the</strong> membership has grown to 185individuals.A modest $20 annual membership feevirtually pays for itself in that <strong>the</strong> annualend <strong>of</strong> year dinner is free to all membersin good standing along with <strong>the</strong> generousinvitation, at no cost, to <strong>the</strong> MCDSAannual summer picnic.S.O.A.R. expresses sincere appreciationto <strong>the</strong> <strong>Monroe</strong> <strong>County</strong> Deputy <strong>Sheriff</strong>’sAssociation MCDSA (Jail & Civil Union)that continues to <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong>fice space andclerical support to S.O.A.R. through-outits existence.The Foundation has been in existencesince 1991. It is a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organization,which was formed by <strong>Sheriff</strong> AndrewP. Meloni and Undersheriff <strong>Sheriff</strong>(now <strong>Sheriff</strong> ) Patrick O’Flynn, and agroup <strong>of</strong> respected community businessleaders. Its premise is simple: to helpfund special <strong>Sheriff</strong>’s <strong>Office</strong> programsand projects which are not possible withcounty funding alone. Donations to <strong>the</strong>Foundation help enhance CommunityServices programs on crime prevention,drug /alcohol awareness and safetyeducation. The Foundation also providesfunding for <strong>the</strong> following programs:• The <strong>Sheriff</strong>’s Explorers (ascout program for young adultsinterested in law enforcement).• <strong>Sheriff</strong>’s Summer Camp youthwith sleeping bags, duffel bagsand o<strong>the</strong>r camp items.• Citizens and clergy academies.• The D.A.R.E. (Drug AbuseResistance Education) programfor 9-11 year olds by purchasingcomputer equipment and studentsupplies.
