8 BUCKINGHAM BEACON ✦ September 16 – October 13, 2011 � Keeping the Lights On BY JANET MILLER CONTRIBUTOR Governor Bob McDonnell joined Dominion executives and local officials last month for the dedication of the Bear Garden Power Station in Buckingham County. The natural gas-fired plant can create enough electricity to power about 145,000 homes. It burns cleaner than traditional coal-fired plants. Dominion invested over $600 million in the project. The $619 million Bear Garden Power Station celebrated its official opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 19. Participating in the celebration were many guests and visitors from Buckingham and <strong>Fluvanna</strong> counties as well as Gov. Robert F. McDonell. Also present for the ribbon-cutting were David Christian, CEO of Dominion, as well as members of the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors and the County Administrator Rebecca Carter. COMMUNITY Buckingham can expect annual revenues from the Power Station of more than $ 1 million as the 2-on-1 combined cycle unit can generate 580 megawatts, enough electrical power for 145,000 homes. Bear Garden began commercial production May 23, operating with clean burning natural gas, with an oil backup fuel system. At the peak of its construction, more than 700 workers were employed on site. Currently, there are 25 full-time employees, keeping the lights on in Buckingham and surrounding counties. ••• Where can I pickup my Buckingham Beacon? COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER WEEK Health Center gets digital mammography unit Central Virginia Community Health Center (CVCHC) celebrated National Community Health Center Week with a ribbon cutting for the new digital mammography unit on Aug. 8. The purpose of National Community Health Center Week is to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s community health centers. During the opening remarks, Rod Manifold, Central Virginia Health Services Executive Director, explained that the new unit was made possible by a grant received through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), along with fundraising efforts within the Buckingham community. “[The new machine] puts a greater emphasis on women’s health in general. The whole issue of breast health is enhanced by having the unit right here in this community” Manifold said. CVCHC’s digital mammography unit is the first and only digital mammography unit in a community health center across the state. This unit replaces the older, film unit that was donated by the Siemens Corporation back in the 1990’s. The new mammography unit gives CVCHC state of the art technology and allows staff to transmit mammograms electronically to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where they are read by radiologists at this academic medical center. Women can be assured that these high quality images can greatly assist in identifying breast cancers early. In previous years, CVCHC performed around 1,000 mammograms annually. With the new machine, CVCHC hopes to increase that number. CVCHC has been fortunate enough to receive a grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, that allows the health center to provide free mammograms to uninsured, low income individuals In addition to the new digital mammography unit, the grant from the PPACA will cover renovation and expansion costs at the health center. The renovation will include expanding the waiting room and administrative areas, updating the exam rooms, and expanding the pharmacy. CVCHC will add on a fitness and Photo courtesy of Amanda Palmore. There will be space for group exercise as well as fitness equipment and machines. PPACA funding paid for a new walking and jogging track in the field adjacent to CVCHC. The track, with both a quarter and half mile track, is open to the public and ready for use. Fitness stations will be added at a later date.
