Recognizing Our Successes W e believe every associate has a role to play in delivering a successful approach to sustainability. To recognize changes in the way we work and the products we’re developing to make a sustainable long-term effort, we created the Chief Executive’s Award for Innovation in Sustainability. In 2010, we had 52 entries from across all divisions and regions of the world. T R A N S F O R M I N G H U N T S M A N P I G M E N T S C A L A I S S I T E 8 Huntsman 2010 Sustainability Report Top honors went to Huntsman Pigments Calais site in France for its transformation from a closure candidate to one of the strongest and most sustainable sulfate titanium dioxide (TiO 2) plants in the world. (See page 17.) Their efforts touched all three legs of sustainability – people, planet and profits. By converting a waste product to magnesium sulfate, a magnesium-rich soil conditioner, the site will sell a valuable new product, reduce waste and carbon emissions, and help secure a stronger future for the Calais operations.
2HigHly commended Two other entries were highly commended. The Rozenburg Polyurethanes site in The Netherlands helped reduce road miles traveled, costs and carbon emissions through a sustainable transportation logistics plan. (See page 18.) The Textile Effects Global AvITERA ® SE provides highly innovative reactive dyes that save water usage, energy consumption and labor costs. (See page 13.) Huntsman’s efforts in sustainability also have received recognition from outside the industry. In 2010, Huntsman was named in Newsweek magazine’s Green Ranking – 2010, which evaluates the environmental performance of America’s 500 largest publicly traded companies. The Green Rankings assess companies based on a variety of environmental performance areas, including greenhouse gas emissions, water withdrawal, waste, emissions, and natural-resource use, and corporate environmental policies, programs and initiatives globally. The rankings also include an assessment of each company’s reputation among sustainability professionals. Corporate Leadership Huntsman’s highest governance body is our board of directors. Six of its nine members are independent, or “non-executive.” As executive chairman of the board, Jon M. Huntsman serves as an executive officer of the company and chairman of the board.
