A message from the
director of the industrial
board:
Traditionally, German products, in particular
those associated with the mechanical and
automotive engineering industries and
those resulting from electrical and optical
manufacturing processes, are highly successful
on the world market. International perception
of German products is based upon their
proven value and quality. Such qualities include
our technical innovations, superior durability
of our products and of course their prompt
delivery. All of these attributes are the direct
result of an abundance of skilled craftsmen, of
technicians with extensive vocational training
and practical experience, and of engineers
with an excellent education and training
combined with exceptional creativity. It is a
heritage which we are proud of.
Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler developed the
automobile, which has contributed more to
the changing face of our planet than any other
technical innovation. Both Benz and Daimler
lived and worked independently in the vicinity
of Karlsruhe and laid the foundation for the
production of cars on an industrial scale. For
both men, quality was of key importance, a
facet which is still a fundamental attribute
of specialist industrial German products. Carl
Benz was born in Karlsruhe and received his
formal education in mechanical engineering
at the former Universität Karlsruhe (TH), then
known as the Polytechnic College, from which
he graduated in 1864. After releasing the
design and patenting his internal combustion
engine, he soon became the pioneer of industrial
scale automobile production.
Following the explosion of automobile use
during the 1920s, Benz became a household
name synonymous worldwide with quality
and innovation. Carl Benz subsequently founded
the Benz Company which then merged
with Daimler Motors to become Daimler-
Benz, Mercedes-Benz, DaimlerChrysler AG,
and then ultimately Daimler AG.
Our undergraduate Carl Benz School of
Mechanical Engineering offering Englishtaught
engineering programs is proud to be
part of this continuing legacy of extraordinary
engineering and technological innovation.
Established in 1825, the former Universität
Karlsruhe (TH), now known as the Karlsruhe
Institute of Technology (KIT) after the merger
with the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, is a
leading international institution providing education
for prospective world-class engineers
and scientists. The university was among the
first in Germany to offer Bachelor of Science
degree programs taught in English to students
from all over the world. Today we invite students
from all countries to join the Carl Benz
School to become leaders in engineering,
development and production of specialist
goods. As a prospective international student
you will have already distinguished yourself
as high achiever with exceptional motivation
and competence levels. Students with particularly
high qualifications may qualify for
scholarships.
The KIT is located in the German State
of Baden-Württemberg, which boasts
the highest research and development
expenditure in Europe, as well as the largest
number of employment opportunities in
high-tech industrial sectors. Located in the
heart of Europe with close ties to France
and Switzerland, Karlsruhe conveys a unique
outlook on the world. I am certain you will
find the city of Karlsruhe to be a delightful
and fulfilling place to further your education.
Mechanical Engineering
Benz’ Education
Carl Benz was born in 1844 in Karlsruhe,
Baden, Germany. Despite the limited means of
his family, his mother insisted upon providing
him with a good technical education. Being
a diligent student, Benz passed the entrance
exam to study mechanical engineering at the
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, formerly
University of Karlsruhe, formerly Polytechnic
College. At the tender age of fifteen he came
under the instruction of Ferdinand Redtenbacher
and graduated on 9 July 1864, with a
degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his
years at the university he had already started
to envision concepts for a vehicle that would
eventually become the horseless carriage.
Benz and his first Inventions
In 1871, at the age of 27, Carl Benz joined
a mechanical workshop in Mannheim. Early
business misfortunes did not prevent Carl
Benz from developing new types of engines
and from patenting key engine components.
These patents, among them the patent for the
first internal combustion engine (granted in
1879), soon led to substantial revenue increases
and helped to subsidize the workshop
business. Carl Benz’ true genius became obvious
thanks to his successive inventions, registered
whilst designing what would become
the production standard for his two-stroke
engine. During this time he patented the
speed regulation system, the ignition using
sparks with a battery, the spark plug, the
carburetor, the clutch, the gear shift, and the
water radiator.
Benz and the Motorwagen
In 1887, after years of testing and modifications,
Benz created the first definitive commercial
vehicle, the Model 3, an automobile
with a four-stroke engine of his own design
between the rear wheels. It was gasoline
powered, the power being transmitted by
means of two roller chains to the rear axle
with wooden wheels. This became the first
Fig. 4: Classic Mercedes-Benz
production automobile. The model 3 was
introduced at the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris
with the result that it was rapidly promoted
on a wider international scale.
Expansion
In 1896, Carl Benz was granted a patent
for his design of the first boxer engine with
horizontally opposed pistons. His design created
an engine in which the corresponding
pistons reach top dead centre simultaneously,
thus balancing each other with respect to
momentum. Flat engines with four or fewer
cylinders are most commonly boxer engines.
This continues to be the design principle for
high performance racing car engines such as
those used by Porsche. The great demand for
internal combustion engines increased the size
of, and indeed, completely transformed the
Benz & Cie. automobile company. By 1899
it had become the largest of its kind in the
world, increasing employment from 50 (1890)
to 430 (1899) workers and producing 572
automobiles per year.
Simultaneous Developments
While Benz was designing his boxer engine,
Gottlieb Daimler and his lifelong partner Wilhelm
Maybach, two gifted inventors in Stuttgart,
were dreaming of creating small, high
speed engines to be mounted in any kind of
self-propelled vehicle. In 1885 they patented a
precursor of the modern petrol engine, which
they subsequently fitted to a two-wheeler
considered to be the first motorcycle and, in
the next year, to a stagecoach and a boat.
Later, in 1890, they founded Daimler Motors
(DMG). The first automobile originating from
their design was sold in 1892. Although Gottlieb
Daimler died in 1900 — and there is no
evidence that Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler
knew each other, nor that they knew about
each other‘s early achievements — eventually,
competition with Daimler Motors (DMG) in
Stuttgart began to challenge the leadership of
Benz & Cie. in Mannheim.
After World War I, the years of depression
led to an economic crisis and it became
desirable for both companies to pool their
resources. In 1926, Benz & Cie. and the
Daimler-Motor-Company merged to become
the Daimler-Benz company, later to be renamed
as Daimler-Benz, which is now part of
the Daimler AG. After the merger in 1926, all
new automobiles were called Mercedes-Benz
in honor of the most important model of the
DMG automobiles, the Mercedes 35hp.

Early Career Preparation
Industry Network
Global Markets for
companies have become
reality. Multinational
corporations therefore
have to deal with local,
national and international
issues. This requires
efficient and improved
operational methods
and create the demand
for technically wellqualified
employees who
are also equipped with
intercultural competence
and social skills.
Requirement of Employees
In this era of globalization it is becoming
increasingly important to make the excellent
educational opportunities in Germany
available for students from abroad.
In order to maintain Germany’s technological
market leadership within her export
driven economy, companies must foster
entrepreneurial thinking within their
employees. This will help to develop and
sharpen innovative business ideas and lead
to innovative products and processes. Human
capital will become the driving force for
enterprise growth and evolution.
Technology Region Karlsruhe
The Technology Region Karlsruhe is one of the
strongest economic regions in Europe, with a
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per inhabitant
well above the EU average. Efficient regional
networks and clusters in industries such
as energy, nanotechnology, automotive and
information and communication technology
generate competitive advantages. Therefore
it provides the perfect grounds for building
engineering careers.
In addition, many large inter na tion al cor pora
tions such as Dai mer , Sie mens, ABB, Bosch,
Hei del ber ger Druck mas chin en and Mich e lin,
just to mention a few, have locat ed their
pro duc tion and/or developing facil ities in the
Karls ruhe region.
Collaborative Agreements with
Industry Partners
Collaborative agreements with our industry
partners span from scholarship financing and
indus tri al intern ships to finan cial sup port of
prac ti cal stud ies and research. The prov en success
of our edu ca tion al pro grams, com bined
with intern ships, in ter dis ci pli nary research and
other coop er a tive efforts, make the KIT and
the Carl Benz School students effec tive in the
glo bal com pe ti tion.
Internships
One of the benefits for Carl Benz School students
are two integrated industry internships. The
basic internship should conciliate secondary
mechanical skills, and this is where it differs
from an apprenticeship. It is geared towards
the job characteristics of future engineers,
including their social behaviour and provides
a basis for the requirements of cooperative
operation with technicians. For the advanced
internship the student will work on a more
independent assignment regarding industrial
engineering operations.
Industry Excursions
Annual industry excursions to leading multinationals
will give the students the possibility to
encounter industrial processes and operations.
Kevin Loh Thien Seng, CBS Alumnus
and HECTOR School student with
enthusiasm for energy engineering.
"Studying at the Carl Benz School has presented me with many
challenges, but has also offered many opportunities to grow and to
prove myself."
Kyle Kippenbrock, B.Sc. 2008, USA
Kyle Kippenbrock has made the right choice that changed his life - after completing high school in the
States, he decided to study Mechanical Engineering at the Carl Benz School of Engineering in Germany.
Fortunately he received a scholarship from MAG and he gave his very best to perform well in his studies.
This scholarship support meant that Kyle was constantly in touch with MAG, enabling him to complete his
advanced industrial internship at MAG Industrial Automation and write his “Diplom” thesis in the Maintenance
Technologies division of MAG. During his time spent at MAG, Kyle contributed to the improvement
of workflow and quantitative evaluation by developing a workflow management system for the logistics
department and a method for the quantitative evaluation of the benefits of product-supporting services
such as ramp-up packages, tele-service or on-site maintenance personnel for the customer.
After successfully completing his studies at the Carl Benz School of Engineering, Kyle was accepted to
a Ph.D. program and is now a Ph.D. candidate in Mechanical Engineering at the Institute of Production
Science at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He is currently involved in the research of innovative
methods for the quality management of micromanufacturing and will probably complete his Ph.D. by the
end of 2012.
We wish Kyle all the best for his future!
Success Stories
Tradition of Excellence
"The road to successfully completing my Bachelor Studies was extremely
challenging. I found the lectureres and professors really great and helpful.
The learning experience at HECTOR School after my graduation at CBS
can be described by one word - Excellent."
Kevin Loh Thien Seng, BSc 2008, Brunei
The positive learning experiences at the Carl Benz School of Engineering must have encouraged Kevin to go
for his Masters by joining the HECTOR School of Engineering and Management, the technology business
school of the International Department (also part of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology).
Currently enrolled in the M.Sc. program in Energy Engineering and Management, Kevin has benefitted
from the technical modules that teach the fundamentals and technical implications regarding the possibilities
of electricity production based on sustainable energy. By looking at different business models and its
finances during the management modules, Kevin gained fundamental management and entrepreneurial
skills as well as an insight to project management. There were also opportunities where Kevin learned how
to propose business ideas to potential investors. This knowledge and experience, as far as Kevin describes
it, will be helpful in case he ever sets up his own business venture in Brunei.
At the moment, Kevin is doing an internship at Lufthansatechnik and is part of the engine services department
