Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS Richard H. Carmona completed a National Institutes of Health-sponsored fellowship in trauma, burns, and critical care. He went on to become the chairman of the State of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical System, a professor of surgery, public health and family and community medicine at the University of Arizona, and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department surgeon and deputy sheriff. Dr. Carmona’s interest in public health stemmed from the realization that most of his patients’ illnesses and injuries were completely preventable. In 2002 Dr. Carmona was nominated by the president and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate to become the 17th Surgeon General of the United States. Dr. Carmona was selected because of his extensive experience in public health, clinical sciences, health care management, preparedness, and his commitment to prevention as an effective means to improve public health and reduce health care costs while improving the quality and quantity of life. As Surgeon General, Dr. Carmona focused on prevention, preparedness, health disparities, health literacy, global health and health diplomacy. He issued many landmark Surgeon General Communications during his tenure, including the definitive Surgeon General’s Report about the dangers of second-hand smoke. Dr Carmona is Vice Chairman for Canyon Ranch and President of the nonprofit Canyon Ranch Institute. Richard Smith, MD Richard Smith is the director of the UnitedHealth Chronic Disease Initiative which is collaborating on a global program with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to create centers in the developing world to counter the pandemic of chronic disease. Previously he was the Chief Executive of UnitedHealth Europe, a subsidiary of the UnitedHealth Group that works with public health systems in Europe, and for 13 years editor of the British Medical Journal and Chief Executive of the BMJ Publishing Group. A member of the board of the Public Library of Science, he is also an honorary professor at the University of Warwick, and chair of the board of Patients Know Best (a start up that uses information technology to improve doctor patient partnership). He comes from a family of comedians and loves making soup, porridge, marmalade, and trouble. Catalina Denman Champion, PhD Catalina Denman Champion is Senior Professor and Researcher and former President of El Colegio de Sonora (College of Sonora) in Hermosillo, Mexico. She was a Fogarty grantee working with the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan and author of articles, chapters and books on health and society, including health and women’s work, gender and reproductive health, HPV, cervical cancer, and primary prevention of chronic disease in Northern Mexico and US Mexico border communities and as well as texts on qualitative research methodology. Dr Denman has served on numerous national committees and is Visiting Scholar at the University of Michigan and Adjunct Professor at the University of Arizona. Her current research is a joint project with the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health developing promotora based prevention models, as part of the global program to counter chronic disease funded by UnitedHealth Chronic Disease Initiative. Ram Shrestha, MS, MSc Ram Shrestha is currently Senior Advisor for Quality Improvement and Community Health & Nutrition at the University Research Co., LLC funded by USAID. He is a trained nutritionist and the former Community Health Advisor for the Ministry of Health in Nepal where he led the national initiative to successfully reduce the infant mortality rate in Nepal through community-based vitamin A distribution programs. The program boasts approximately 50,000 female community health volunteers who have helped distribute vitamin A to 3.5 million Nepalese children annually. Mr. Shrestha’s work in public health will influence Nepal for many generations to come. Mr. Shrestha has also received the following honors and awards: Frontline Award Winner, for cutting-edge work in the field of nutrition, Tufts Nutrition School, 2006; Global Health Hero, Time Global Health Summit, 2005; International Award for Best Practices in Global Health, Global Health Council, 2000. Gene Bukhman, MD, PhD Gene Bukhman is an Assistant Professor in Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr Bukhman is the Cardiology Director for Partners in Health and Director of the Program in Global Non-communicable Disease and Social Change. Dr. Bukhman is an expert on strategic planning for NCD control in populations fighting against extreme poverty. He is the Senior Technical Advisor in NCDs for the Ministry of Health of Rwanda. In this capacity, he is working closely with colleagues in the Rwandan government to integrate services into the process of health systems strengthening. Dr. Bukhman is also an advisor to the Global Taskforce on Expanded Access to Cancer Care and Control in Developing Countries. 13
