Welcome Jennie F. Becenti, MPH, BA Executive Director 4 Tohono O’odham Department of Health and Human Services On behalf of the Tohono O’odham Department of Health and Human Services (TODHHS), I would like to welcome you to our beautiful land of desert. It is an honor to have you here and be given the opportunity for the Tohono O’odham Nation to take part in the New Frontiers in Global Health Leadership in partnership with our friends at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. The Tohono O’odham Nation is faced with great health disparities especially in regard to Type 2 diabetes. Although, the Tohono O’odham Nation has the highest prevalence of diabetes in Indian Country, the Nation is taking many positive steps to reverse this trend by building on our strengths and assets with existing resources such as the use of traditional foods that are produced and grown here on our land. We believe that these traditional foods produce the best possible results in preventing diabetes and promoting healthy lifestyles that reduce the main risk factors. We at TODHHS believe addressing chronic disease (or non-communicable diseases) must begin by addressing our social, economic and environmental conditions as well as the lifestyle patterns that contribute to poor health, within the individual and at the community level. We are pleased to present our two case-studies on the efforts being undertaken by our programs to make inroads into reducing the incidence and prevalence of Diabetes and Cancer. The Healthy O’odham Promotion Program (HOPP) and the Tohono O’odham Cancer Partnership, in partnership with other entities, are creating comprehensive plans and programs in the area of prevention, health promotion and systems improvement that will engage, educate and empower our Nation’s members in furthering their well-being. We hope that you will find inspiration while you are here and new ways to create local and community based solutions to the health concerns that you are addressing in your own communities. The TODHHS has many diverse programs that address the health and social needs across the lifespan for O’odham members and communities. The Department’s goal is to assist in educating, supporting and bringing out good health and wellness from within our members of the Tohono O’odham Nation through the following service areas: Senior Services, Adult Protection, Behavioral Health, Special Needs, Community Health, Health Transportation, Child Welfare, Health Promotion and Family Assistance. Vision Statement: “By 2030, the Tohono O’odham Department of Health and Human Services will have achieved a state of health and wellness in our communities which promotes Himdag” Mission Statement: The Department of Health and Human Services is leading, developing and managing effective quality programs by responding to needs of the Hemajkam (people).

The Arizona Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Arizona Public Health Training Center (AzPHTC) The Arizona Public Health Training Center (AzPHTC) is part of a network of 37 Public Health Training Centers nationwide, funded by Health and Human Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The Public Health Training Centers (PHTCs) are one of many programs sponsored by Health and Human Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). HRSA works to respond to critical health system needs. PHTCs are supported by HRSA’s Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr), Center for Public Health. The goals of the BHPr are to eliminate barriers to care, eliminate health disparities, assure quality of care, and improve public health and health care systems. Most other professional healthcare entities will provide reciprocal continuing education hours, such as for Diabetes Educators and Community Health Specialists. 5
