Wh<strong>at</strong> most had feared wasnow to take place, although <strong>the</strong> undue haste <strong>in</strong> which Greene K<strong>in</strong>gdecided to shut <strong>the</strong> brewery <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> this year was unexpectedand can only be expla<strong>in</strong>ed if <strong>the</strong> decision to close had alreadybeen made.Greene K<strong>in</strong>g have claimed th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> H&H brewery was unviableand had to be closed. This hardly fits <strong>in</strong> with <strong>the</strong> facts which clearlyshow th<strong>at</strong> over <strong>the</strong> previous years H&H made acceptable pr<strong>of</strong>itsand it was only <strong>in</strong> February 2006, when contract brew<strong>in</strong>g wasdiscont<strong>in</strong>ued, th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> brewery was <strong>at</strong> less than ‘full capacity’.However, wh<strong>at</strong> has happened can not be changed back and itis necessary to look towards <strong>the</strong> future. After all Greene K<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong>mselves have a tradition <strong>of</strong> brew<strong>in</strong>g cask beers and it is tobe assumed th<strong>at</strong> local pubs will be able to <strong>of</strong>fer beers from <strong>the</strong>irrema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g two breweries – Bury St Edmunds and Belhaven. One area <strong>of</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> concern for <strong>the</strong> local dr<strong>in</strong>ker is, wh<strong>at</strong> happens to<strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g Kimberley beers? It is understood th<strong>at</strong> only Kimberleybitter and Olde Trip will survive and th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>se will be brewed<strong>at</strong> Bury St Edmunds. CAMRA has sought assurances th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>senew beers will be clearly labelled to <strong>in</strong>form <strong>the</strong> public th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>yare not <strong>the</strong> genu<strong>in</strong>e Kimberley brewed beers. A company withsuch a proud reput<strong>at</strong>ion for brew<strong>in</strong>g would surely not <strong>at</strong>tempt todeceive <strong>the</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>ker by pretend<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> beers were still Hardys& Hansons Nott<strong>in</strong>gham brewed beers?Wh<strong>at</strong> is to happen to <strong>the</strong> Brewery site? Led by <strong>the</strong> local CivicSociety a group has been formed to ‘Save <strong>the</strong> Brewery Site’(SOBS) and <strong>the</strong>y aim to preserve <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs and environment, whilst encourag<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess development <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area. Oneobjective would be to see some brew<strong>in</strong>g on site, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> amicro-brewery, as this would reta<strong>in</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> brew<strong>in</strong>g heritageassoci<strong>at</strong>ed with <strong>the</strong> area.CAMRA supports <strong>the</strong> aims <strong>of</strong> SOBS and hopes s<strong>in</strong>cerely th<strong>at</strong>Greene K<strong>in</strong>g will recognise <strong>the</strong> depth <strong>of</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y have arousedby clos<strong>in</strong>g Nott<strong>in</strong>gham’s last major brewery and <strong>at</strong> least have<strong>the</strong> good grace to help establish a micro-brewery on <strong>the</strong> formerKimberley brewery site. The Save Hardys and Hansons Brewery- Keep Brew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Kimberley <strong>cards</strong>,displayed <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Festival were quicklyseized on and completed by many<strong>at</strong>tend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Festival. At <strong>the</strong> conclusion<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Festival about 1,000 <strong>cards</strong> hadbeen completed and <strong>the</strong>se have beensent on to Greene K<strong>in</strong>g. Whilst <strong>the</strong> breweryis to be shut <strong>the</strong> <strong>cards</strong> demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>depth <strong>of</strong> local feel<strong>in</strong>g, and it is to behoped th<strong>at</strong> Greene K<strong>in</strong>g recognise this, and th<strong>at</strong> some brew<strong>in</strong>g can still takeplace on <strong>the</strong> former Brewery site.FILL IN A POSTCARD TODAY- LOOK FOR THEM IN YOURLOCAL PUBDecember 2006 / January 2007 www.nott<strong>in</strong>ghamcamra.org

Beer Miles - Do your bit for <strong>the</strong> environment!!Greene K<strong>in</strong>g are about to close Hardys & Hansons Brewery<strong>in</strong> Kimberley and to supply <strong>the</strong>ir pubs with beer brewed <strong>at</strong>Bury St Edmunds 127 miles away [although <strong>in</strong> many cases<strong>the</strong> pumpclips will probably not reveal this fact!] But whobenefits from this move? GK claim <strong>the</strong>y will cut costs byeconomies <strong>of</strong> scale and so arguably <strong>the</strong>ir shareholdersshould reap larger dividends. But wh<strong>at</strong> about <strong>the</strong> impact on <strong>the</strong> community? Kimberley islos<strong>in</strong>g its biggest employer and not only those who have lost<strong>the</strong>ir jobs been hurt by this, but also <strong>the</strong> local economy isimpacted on a wider scale. You as <strong>the</strong> customer are also go<strong>in</strong>g to be affected; <strong>the</strong>reare already higher prices <strong>in</strong> former Hardys & Hansons pubs. But you are also los<strong>in</strong>g several <strong>of</strong> your local beers. OK <strong>the</strong>ymay be carry<strong>in</strong>g out taste trials to replic<strong>at</strong>e Kimberley beersbut do beers produced <strong>in</strong> a factory miles away really evertaste <strong>the</strong> same, particularly six months or more down <strong>the</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e – th<strong>in</strong>k Home and Shipstones Bitters after <strong>the</strong>ir breweryclosures? But <strong>the</strong>re is ano<strong>the</strong>r serious casualty <strong>in</strong> all <strong>of</strong> this devast<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>gaction by Greene K<strong>in</strong>g - <strong>the</strong> environment! More than a BrandI am fed up to <strong>the</strong> back teeth with certa<strong>in</strong> brewers who tre<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>dividual beers as “brands” with no regard to <strong>the</strong>ir history, strength or taste, happily mov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m from brewery to brewery,chang<strong>in</strong>g recipes, and reduc<strong>in</strong>g strengths whilst still hop<strong>in</strong>gdr<strong>in</strong>kers will th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> same beer, or “brand” as <strong>the</strong>yp<strong>at</strong>ronis<strong>in</strong>gly refer to <strong>the</strong>m. In reality <strong>the</strong>y are tre<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g us, <strong>the</strong>dr<strong>in</strong>kers – <strong>the</strong>ir customers - with utter contempt. In this shortseries <strong>of</strong> articles we are try<strong>in</strong>g to redress <strong>the</strong> balance a little bylett<strong>in</strong>g you know wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are up to and <strong>the</strong>n you can make yourown m<strong>in</strong>d up whe<strong>the</strong>r you want to dr<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>se beers or not.Flowers I.P.A.India Pale Ale (I.P.A.) was orig<strong>in</strong>allydeveloped <strong>in</strong> Burton on Trent to survive<strong>the</strong> three-month sea journey from Englandto India <strong>in</strong> order to slake <strong>the</strong> thirsts <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> soldiers and civil servants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>the</strong>n British Colony. The beer was pale<strong>in</strong> colour, extremely hoppy and high <strong>in</strong>alcohol, probably around 6%. So populardid this beer style prove, th<strong>at</strong> it was copied by o<strong>the</strong>r brewers andsold <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.K. as well as exported abroad. Good examples <strong>of</strong>this beer style can be found today, strangely most commonly <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> U.S.A. with such brews as <strong>the</strong> excellent Sierra Nevada I.P.A.,but a good English example is Marston’s Old Empire.Sadly, <strong>the</strong> name I.P.A. has been misappropri<strong>at</strong>ed over <strong>the</strong> yearsand is now also used to apply to brews th<strong>at</strong> could perhaps moreaccur<strong>at</strong>ely be described as session bitters. Extremely hoppy andhigh <strong>in</strong> alcohol? These are certa<strong>in</strong>ly not descriptions th<strong>at</strong> can beapplied to <strong>the</strong> likes <strong>of</strong> Greene K<strong>in</strong>g I.P.A. and Flowers I.P.A. bothbrewed to a modest 3.6%.We all know who Greene K<strong>in</strong>g are, but who are Flowers andwhere do <strong>the</strong>y brew. Well <strong>the</strong> answer to th<strong>at</strong> question is th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>ydon’t really exist as such and <strong>the</strong>y certa<strong>in</strong>ly don’t brew <strong>at</strong> all, because “Flowers” is now little more than a brand name ownedby <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional brew<strong>in</strong>g giants InBev.There once was a Flowers Brewery, although it never brewed a3.6% I.P.A. as far as I can trace, it was founded <strong>in</strong> Str<strong>at</strong>ford-upon-Avon <strong>in</strong> 1831. Flowers brewed quite happily <strong>in</strong> Str<strong>at</strong>ford until1954 when <strong>the</strong>y were taken over by <strong>the</strong> Luton Brewery <strong>of</strong> J.W.Green who unusually <strong>the</strong>n changed <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> both breweriesto “Flowers”. Then <strong>in</strong> 1963 <strong>the</strong> company was taken over byWhitbread and renamed Whitbread Flowers (sounds more like aflorist!) and <strong>the</strong> Str<strong>at</strong>ford brewery was closed down <strong>in</strong> 1968, with<strong>the</strong> beers <strong>the</strong>n be<strong>in</strong>g brewed <strong>in</strong> Cheltenham.Presumably because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Flowers’ logo <strong>in</strong>corpor<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g an image<strong>of</strong> William Shakespeare, <strong>the</strong> “brand name” has cont<strong>in</strong>ued to thisday even though <strong>the</strong> Cheltenham Brewery was closed <strong>in</strong> 1998and Whitbread are no longer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> brew<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>at</strong> all. The“brand” is now owned by InBev and Flowers I.P.A. and Orig<strong>in</strong>alare both contract brewed for <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent Badgerbrewery (which used to be called Hall and Woodhouse – wake up<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> back <strong>the</strong>re!).So <strong>the</strong>re you have it. It’s not really an I.P.A., Flowers hasn’t existeds<strong>in</strong>ce 1963, it doesn’t appear to be brewed to an orig<strong>in</strong>al Flowersrecipe and <strong>the</strong> beer is contract brewed by a different brewerycompany on behalf on an Intern<strong>at</strong>ional brew<strong>in</strong>g conglomer<strong>at</strong>e.Wards Best BitterGo<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>in</strong> time, aroundtwenty-five years perhaps, one<strong>of</strong> my favourite beers used tobe a very dist<strong>in</strong>ctive, malty BestBitter from Wards who had beenbrew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sheaf Brewery <strong>in</strong>Sheffield s<strong>in</strong>ce 1876. Wards weretaken over by Vaux <strong>of</strong> Sunderland<strong>in</strong> 1972 and sadly <strong>the</strong> brewery wasclosed and demolished <strong>in</strong> 1999. So wh<strong>at</strong>’s this Ward’s Best Bitter<strong>the</strong>y are flogg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bottles <strong>in</strong> our local supermarket <strong>the</strong>n?Well, <strong>in</strong> 2003 <strong>the</strong> Wards brand was bought by <strong>the</strong> Double MaximBeer Company and Wards Best Bitter was re-launched under asubsidiary called <strong>the</strong> Wards Brew<strong>in</strong>g Company. This new Ward’sBest Bitter was to be produced us<strong>in</strong>g exactly <strong>the</strong> same <strong>in</strong>gredientsas <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al recipe and was orig<strong>in</strong>ally launched just <strong>in</strong> a bottledform brewed by Rob<strong>in</strong>sons <strong>of</strong> Stockport albeit to a higher gravity<strong>of</strong> 4.5%, and shortly afterwards a cask version, <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al4%, produced by Jenn<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> Cockermouth was made available. But <strong>the</strong> beer is not brewed by Ward’s Brewery <strong>of</strong> Sheffield as <strong>the</strong>pump clip implies, and not even <strong>in</strong> Yorkshire but <strong>in</strong> Lancashireand Cumbria! Inevitably it will be brewed with different w<strong>at</strong>erand a different yeast is probably used although I stand to becorrected on th<strong>at</strong>.Ruddles CountyIn <strong>the</strong> August/September edition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dr<strong>in</strong>ker I talked about <strong>the</strong>history <strong>of</strong> Ruddles County, a beer no longer brewed <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> longdemolishedRuddles Brewery near Oakham but <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> GreeneK<strong>in</strong>g factory <strong>in</strong> Bury St Edmunds, although <strong>the</strong> pump clips donot admit to this. Back <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> seventies <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al County wasan outstand<strong>in</strong>g beer with a reput<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> travelled a lot fur<strong>the</strong>rthan <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong>dependent brewery’s 36 tied houses <strong>in</strong> Rutland. The cask version <strong>of</strong> this beer is now brewed <strong>at</strong> a strength <strong>of</strong> just4.3%, compared to <strong>the</strong> 5% <strong>at</strong> which it ga<strong>in</strong>ed its reput<strong>at</strong>ion, and<strong>in</strong> my view it bears little resemblance to <strong>the</strong> superb brew <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>seventies.But if you want an idea wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al County tasted like<strong>the</strong>n order a p<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Ten Fifty from <strong>the</strong> Gra<strong>in</strong>store Brewery<strong>in</strong> Oakham. To my taste buds, this splendid 5% brew bears aclose resemblance to <strong>the</strong> County <strong>of</strong> old, a well balanced hoppyand fruity brew, with an underly<strong>in</strong>g subtle sweetness and an<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g bitterness. Not only is Ten Fifty brewed to <strong>the</strong> samestrength as <strong>the</strong> old version <strong>of</strong> County, and just a few miles fromits former home, but Gra<strong>in</strong>store Brewery was founded by formerRuddles brewer Tony Davis. Gra<strong>in</strong>store make no claims th<strong>at</strong> it isbased on <strong>the</strong> old Ruddles County, but try it yourself and see wh<strong>at</strong>you th<strong>in</strong>k.Vote With Your WalletIt is, quite rightly, a m<strong>at</strong>ter <strong>of</strong> personal choice as to which beersyou choose to dr<strong>in</strong>k. But with <strong>hundreds</strong> <strong>of</strong> thriv<strong>in</strong>g breweries <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> country would it not be better to try one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir au<strong>the</strong>nticbrews ra<strong>the</strong>r than someth<strong>in</strong>g with a “brand name” lifted from abrewery th<strong>at</strong> has been shut down, <strong>of</strong>ten by <strong>the</strong> very company nowtry<strong>in</strong>g to flog you <strong>the</strong> stuff?December 2006 / January 2007 www.nott<strong>in</strong>ghamcamra.org

Tales from Campus an altern<strong>at</strong>ive view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Beer FestivalI don’t like real ale. Personally, I prefer lager. And I realise th<strong>at</strong> it’salmost heresy to write this <strong>in</strong> a real ale magaz<strong>in</strong>e but after a hardday I don’t th<strong>in</strong>k you can be<strong>at</strong> a cool, reassur<strong>in</strong>gly expensive p<strong>in</strong>t<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> amber nectar. Spot on.You’d be forgiven for th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g it slightly odd <strong>the</strong>n th<strong>at</strong> I went to<strong>the</strong> first night <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham Beer Festival. I’ll admit th<strong>at</strong> whenNick, my fl<strong>at</strong>m<strong>at</strong>e and fully paid up member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>ghamTrent Real Ale Society <strong>in</strong>vited me, I wasn’t exactly keen. Nick, however, po<strong>in</strong>ted out th<strong>at</strong> I just say th<strong>at</strong> I don’t like real ale; I don’tknow th<strong>at</strong> I don’t like real ale. I th<strong>in</strong>k th<strong>at</strong> all real ale dr<strong>in</strong>kers arebeardy old men, hold<strong>in</strong>g a grudge aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vention <strong>of</strong> fizzbut this, Nick said, was just ano<strong>the</strong>r misconception. After fur<strong>the</strong>rchoruses <strong>of</strong> you’ll-never-know-if-you-don’t-try-it and, eventually,<strong>the</strong> promise <strong>of</strong> a free ticket, I decided to give it a go.Myself, Nick and around fifteen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RealAle Society met outside <strong>the</strong> Students’ Union build<strong>in</strong>g and madeour way down to Victoria Leisure Centre <strong>in</strong> Sne<strong>in</strong>ton. Inside <strong>the</strong>rewere two sports halls with over three hundred beers and a smallerselection <strong>of</strong> ciders and w<strong>in</strong>es to choose from. For a beg<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>the</strong>choice is so overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong> a sort <strong>of</strong> childish frustr<strong>at</strong>ion youf<strong>in</strong>d yourself immedi<strong>at</strong>ely drawn to <strong>the</strong> Bishop’s F<strong>in</strong>gers, Badger’sTanglefoots and W<strong>in</strong>ter’s Nips on <strong>of</strong>fer. So it was with <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>in</strong>tlydisconcert<strong>in</strong>g feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> ask<strong>in</strong>g for half a Fuzzy Knob th<strong>at</strong> I tastedmy first real ale; except, I couldn’t really taste anyth<strong>in</strong>g. Don’t getme wrong, it wasn’t unpleasant but after confess<strong>in</strong>g earlier to be<strong>in</strong>ga devout lager-dr<strong>in</strong>ker and suffer<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> worried-you-mighttaste-someth<strong>in</strong>gjeers, quite frankly, I was a bit disappo<strong>in</strong>ted.So before my second ale, I was given a crash course <strong>in</strong> beer tast<strong>in</strong>g(Hold ale <strong>in</strong> mouth for five seconds. Check. Swallow. Check.Circul<strong>at</strong>e air from mouth to nose. Check) after which I could reallytaste <strong>the</strong> more prom<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>in</strong>dividual flavours. Admittedly, I wasaware th<strong>at</strong> I was dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g a beer called Strawberry Fields so <strong>the</strong>flavour wasn’t <strong>the</strong> gre<strong>at</strong>est <strong>of</strong> shocks but <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t is th<strong>at</strong> I couldreally taste it and I actually quite liked it. I thought Nick shouldbe <strong>the</strong> first to hear <strong>of</strong> this revel<strong>at</strong>ion but, a little over an hour <strong>in</strong>toour jaunt to <strong>the</strong> Beer Festival, he felt compelled to down a half <strong>of</strong>Suicider. I left him to it.After my first two ales <strong>the</strong>n, I began to loosen up <strong>in</strong> this new<strong>at</strong>mosphere. With <strong>the</strong> scent <strong>of</strong> a potential new member amongst<strong>the</strong>ir ranks, <strong>the</strong> Ale Society was welcom<strong>in</strong>g and friendly bunch and<strong>the</strong> festival as a whole was a pleasant, good-n<strong>at</strong>ured affair. It alsobecame apparent very quickly th<strong>at</strong> beardy old country man-folkaren’t <strong>the</strong> only ones who enjoy real ale. There were, whisper it,even young people <strong>the</strong>re.So have I been converted? Well no, not yet. I’d still take a p<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong>lager over an ale anytime. The diversity <strong>of</strong> real ale be<strong>in</strong>g as it isthough, I can’t imag<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>re not be<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong>re whichI might enjoy. Ultim<strong>at</strong>ely, whe<strong>the</strong>r or not I learn to love <strong>the</strong> alereally doesn’t m<strong>at</strong>ter; <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham Trent RealAle Society, half <strong>the</strong> fun is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g out, isn’t it?K<strong>in</strong>gsAd-L-65x90 6/10/06 14:16 Page 1At <strong>the</strong> <strong>recent</strong> Tynemill awards night <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir pubs customers votes for <strong>the</strong> Beer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year where announced. More ‘Real Ale <strong>in</strong> a Bottle’(61) by Andrew LudlowThe <strong>recent</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham Beer Festival was not just a successbut confirm<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>re is an amaz<strong>in</strong>g variety <strong>of</strong> casksbeers from established and new brewers. This was particularlydemonstr<strong>at</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> SIBA (Society <strong>of</strong> IndependentBrewers) chose <strong>the</strong> event to host <strong>the</strong> SIBA East Midlandsbrew<strong>in</strong>g awards for 2006/2007.The w<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bottled beer c<strong>at</strong>egory was Jaipur IPA fromThornbridge Brewery <strong>in</strong> Derbyshire and by good fortuneI was able to f<strong>in</strong>d a bottle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beer <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> contest. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> Beer Festival I have bided my timeon sampl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> beer as I already had experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> caskversion <strong>of</strong> Jaipur IPA and as this is such an excellent beer Iwas not quite sure how <strong>the</strong> bottled conditioned version wouldm<strong>at</strong>ch up.Eventually I decided to sample <strong>the</strong> beer and after carefulpour<strong>in</strong>g, to ensure <strong>the</strong> sediment stayed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bottle, I wasrewarded with a light golden pale ale. The beer reta<strong>in</strong>ed astrong head and whilst medium carbon<strong>at</strong>ion was present; <strong>the</strong>trick generally is to allow <strong>the</strong> beer to stand for a while as thistends to remove any build <strong>of</strong> CO2.The taste was wonderful with malt and hops balanced todeliver a quality strong ale with a pleasant dry aftertaste. Thebitterness was tempered by a delic<strong>at</strong>e fruit<strong>in</strong>ess and this camethrough <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> aroma. For a strong beer (5.9% ABV), Jaipurwas very dr<strong>in</strong>kable and is certa<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> beer th<strong>at</strong> couldbe easily enjoyed <strong>at</strong> home on thosenights when you can not get out to <strong>the</strong>pub. I have to concede th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> beerjudges knew <strong>the</strong>ir stuff – Jaipur IPA iscerta<strong>in</strong>ly an award w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g beer. The beer is sold <strong>in</strong> 500ml bottlesand can be purchased direct from <strong>the</strong>brewery 01629 640617; fax 01629640039 or e-mail <strong>in</strong>fo@thornbridgebrewery.co.ukThornbridge Brewery is loc<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> grounds <strong>of</strong>Thornbridge Hall near Bakewell and its first beers appeared<strong>in</strong> February 2005. You need to bookwell <strong>in</strong> advance to get <strong>the</strong>m, and for <strong>the</strong>cheapest it is sometimes necessary to travel<strong>in</strong> midweek and <strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong>f peak times. At <strong>the</strong>time <strong>of</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> cheapest onl<strong>in</strong>e bmibabyflight available was £26.95 return. Tra<strong>in</strong> faresare more complic<strong>at</strong>ed – <strong>the</strong> cheapest way isto go with GNER from Grantham or Newarkfor £20.50 return, or you can go with Virg<strong>in</strong>from Derby £30 return. It is advisable to book<strong>the</strong>se se<strong>at</strong>s on <strong>the</strong> provider’s own website(<strong>the</strong>y are based on two s<strong>in</strong>gles) and makesepar<strong>at</strong>e arrangements to get to <strong>the</strong> respectivestart<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>at</strong>ions with Central Tra<strong>in</strong>s. It was a little sadto see groups <strong>of</strong> smokers huddled toge<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cold and ra<strong>in</strong> to enjoy a cigarette, butwhen I spoke to <strong>the</strong>m, most said <strong>the</strong>y didnot really m<strong>in</strong>d. Most licensees I spoke toothought it was an improvement too, anddid not feel th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y had lost much trade.<strong>Some</strong> had special ways <strong>of</strong>help<strong>in</strong>g smokers, and onebrewery, Belhaven, hadeven produced a special beerm<strong>at</strong> to protect your preciousdr<strong>in</strong>k whilst outside! If you have never drunk <strong>in</strong> Scotland, youneed to be aware th<strong>at</strong> not all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> realale comes from hand pumps. In someestablishments, tall brass fonts dispensebeer us<strong>in</strong>g air pressure. Traditionally ma<strong>in</strong>sw<strong>at</strong>er pressure was used to cre<strong>at</strong>e this(only <strong>the</strong> Scots could th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g a freeresource to pump <strong>the</strong>ir beer!), but todayelectric compressors are more common. The fonts can be very similar to keg ones, but <strong>the</strong> tap goes sideways ra<strong>the</strong>r than down– as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> photograph below. There are thirteen pubs <strong>in</strong> this crawl, but ifyou feel this is unlucky – or even too manyfor one day, it can conveniently be split <strong>in</strong>totwo: New Town Crawl (1-6) and Old TownCrawl (7-13).Rose Street is famous for pub-crawl<strong>in</strong>g, butsadly most establishments are keg only and<strong>of</strong>ten with silly names – would you reallywant to dr<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> a pub called “The Bad Ass”or “Dirty Dick’s”? So it is good to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>at</strong>least one decent traditional pub rema<strong>in</strong>s:Scott’s Bar (1). This simple dr<strong>in</strong>kers’ pubhas one L-shaped room with a wooden floor, dark panell<strong>in</strong>g and a bar with a brick foot-railand stools. There is a TV and quiet music.Well kept Caledonian Deuchars IPA and80/- were <strong>the</strong> only beers when I called on aMonday night, but I understand th<strong>at</strong> guestsare available <strong>at</strong> weekends. At £2.25 thiswas one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cheaper p<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh;even better value was <strong>the</strong> malt whisky <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>month <strong>at</strong> £1.65 for a large (35ml) measure! There are many more pubs th<strong>at</strong> just sell <strong>the</strong>setwo beers which you will pass on this crawl;I have tried to both <strong>in</strong>clude more variety andto take you to some pubs which, for variousreasons, are classics. The Oxford Bar (2) is a classic locals’ boozerdecor<strong>at</strong>ed with Burns memorabilia wherelively convers<strong>at</strong>ion was <strong>the</strong> only sound whenI visited. It fe<strong>at</strong>ures <strong>in</strong> Ian Rank<strong>in</strong> novels, and has been <strong>the</strong> haunt <strong>of</strong> many famous and<strong>in</strong>famous characters over <strong>the</strong> years. The firstroom houses <strong>the</strong> bar, and <strong>the</strong> second boastslots <strong>of</strong> historical pictures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pub andsurround<strong>in</strong>g area. The beers are CaledonianDeuchars IPA, Belhaven 80/- and guests, Isle<strong>of</strong> Skye Red Cuill<strong>in</strong> was <strong>the</strong> star for me.16 www.nott<strong>in</strong>ghamcamra.org December 2006 / January 2007

Clarks Bar (3) is an<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g local withtwo “priv<strong>at</strong>e” rooms<strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> bar anda scarily steep flight<strong>of</strong> steps to <strong>the</strong> loos. The ma<strong>in</strong> room hasa f<strong>in</strong>e bar backedwith a polishedgantry topped with apersonalised Clark’sclock. There are brass topped woodentables, high backed upholstered settlesand <strong>the</strong> (almost <strong>in</strong>evitable today) SkySports on TV. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> back rooms hassome f<strong>in</strong>e pr<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> old Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, andlocal football memorabilia. The beersare McEwan’s 80/- on hand pump andCaledonian Deuchars IPA on air pump;no guests were available on a Mondayeven<strong>in</strong>g but <strong>the</strong>y should be <strong>the</strong>re <strong>at</strong>weekends.By far <strong>the</strong> best range <strong>of</strong> beers I found <strong>in</strong>Auld Reekie was <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cask and Barrel (4).Accompany<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>evitable CaledonianDeuchars IPA were regulars Draught Bassand Hadrian & Border Cowie was a splendidarray <strong>of</strong> Scottish microbrewery beers <strong>of</strong> allsorts <strong>of</strong> strengths and styles, several <strong>of</strong> whichwere new to me. The pub comprises one largeroom with bare floorboards, a f<strong>in</strong>e horseshoebar, settles, tables and some huge old barrels(butts, I believe) to stand around. There areV

lots <strong>of</strong> brewery mirrors and posters, and twosilent Sky Sports screens. There’s a gre<strong>at</strong><strong>at</strong>mosphere here, and <strong>the</strong> beers (I stoppedfor several) are <strong>in</strong> tip-top condition.Landlord and several guest beers fromboth Scotland and England are all served<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e condition – do not be put <strong>of</strong>f by <strong>the</strong>dispense fonts. This classic Scottish oneroomeris a haven <strong>of</strong> peace and tranquillitywith no music, TV or gam<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es.There is a polished wooden bar with amagnificent gantry laden with s<strong>in</strong>gle maltwhiskies; it has a foot-rail and co<strong>at</strong> hooksbut no barstools. Many rare old brewerymirrors adorn <strong>the</strong> walls, and <strong>the</strong>re is a f<strong>in</strong>eold pendulum clock.Whilst <strong>the</strong> Barony Bar (5) did not havesuch an excit<strong>in</strong>g range <strong>of</strong> beers, it did havelots <strong>of</strong> character. There is some superbtil<strong>in</strong>g and sta<strong>in</strong>ed wood <strong>in</strong>side, detailedcornices and an <strong>at</strong>tractive bar and gantry.Good but quiet rock music helps to cre<strong>at</strong>ea pleasant <strong>at</strong>mosphere which was spoiltonly by a strong smell <strong>of</strong> sewage – but Iwas assured th<strong>at</strong> this was due to an exteriorburst pipe and was be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong>tended to! Wellkept Caledonian Deuchars IPA and 80/-,McEwan’s 80/- and Courage Directors wereaccompaniedby severalguest beers, but all fromE n g l i s hr e g i o n a lbrewers – f<strong>in</strong>efor a local, but <strong>of</strong> less<strong>in</strong>terest to aSassenach! The Guildford Arms (6) was built <strong>in</strong> 1898and clearly no expense was spared! This isan absolute classic <strong>of</strong> Victorian opulence, from <strong>the</strong> sta<strong>in</strong>ed glass w<strong>in</strong>dows to <strong>the</strong>wonderful Jacobean ceil<strong>in</strong>g and galleryrestaurant with its railed balcony jutt<strong>in</strong>g outover <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g area. A revolv<strong>in</strong>gdoor must be negoti<strong>at</strong>ed to enter; sadly<strong>the</strong>re is a Sky Sports screen above this, but itis possible to sit where it cannot be seen. Thebeers are well kept, but on <strong>the</strong> pricey side – butit is worth pay<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> odds for one just tosee <strong>the</strong> place. Caledonian Deuchars IPA and 80/-are accompanied by up to eight microbreweryguests, mak<strong>in</strong>g it one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best ranges <strong>in</strong> town, and <strong>the</strong>re were some new Scottish ones hereth<strong>at</strong> I had not tried before. The Halfway House (7) is hard to f<strong>in</strong>d – it ison Fleshmarket Close, which is actually a flight<strong>of</strong> steps <strong>of</strong>f Market Street, opposite <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>ntrance to Waverley Railway St<strong>at</strong>ion. Thiscosy, characterful pub is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> smallest <strong>in</strong>Scotland. There is a quarry tiled floor, carpeted<strong>in</strong> parts, upholstered settles and a just a fewtables and chairs. Railway memorabilia adorns<strong>the</strong> walls, and <strong>the</strong>re is a jukebox, but played <strong>at</strong>a sensible volume. Four ever-chang<strong>in</strong>g Scottishmicrobrewery beers are usually on sale, and good value local dishes <strong>in</strong>clude stovies, haggis with neeps and t<strong>at</strong>ties, and black boarsausages.I mentioned air pressure pumps earlier; and youwill experience <strong>the</strong>se <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bow Bar (8) where<strong>the</strong>y are used to serve all <strong>the</strong> beers. CaledonianDeuchars IPA, Belhaven 80/-, Timothy TaylorWith a name like <strong>the</strong> Blue Blazer (9), youmight th<strong>in</strong>k you were go<strong>in</strong>g to a snootyupmarket establishment – but, no, this is astraightforward two-roomed local. There isa TV and quiet music <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> room, and<strong>the</strong> smaller back room has an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>gcollection <strong>of</strong> whisky bottle boxes and t<strong>in</strong>s.Well kept Caledonian Deuchars IPA andseveral Scottish microbrewery guests areon sale from both hand and air pumps. The CloistersBar (10) wasformerly aparsonage, andnow has barefloorboardsand largec o m m u n a lGerman beerhall styletables withbench se<strong>at</strong>s.This is ano<strong>the</strong>rTV and musicfree haven, and <strong>the</strong> usualbrewery mirrors are accompanied by oldt<strong>in</strong> advertis<strong>in</strong>g signs, many for cigarettes– seem<strong>in</strong>gly ironic now th<strong>at</strong> smok<strong>in</strong>g isbanned! The f<strong>in</strong>e bar and gantry housesano<strong>the</strong>r extensive collection <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>glemalts. Beers on tap are CaledonianDeuchars IPA, Greene K<strong>in</strong>g IPA, TimothyTaylor’s Landlord and four microbreweryguests. If <strong>the</strong> room seems to be sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gwhen you go to <strong>the</strong> loo, it is because <strong>the</strong>yare reached by a spiral staircase!Bennets Bar (11) only sells CaledonianDeuchars IPA and 80/- but such amagnificent and well-preserved Victorianestablishment must not be missed. From<strong>the</strong> outside, <strong>the</strong> Bernard’s and Usher’sbreweries sta<strong>in</strong>ed glass w<strong>in</strong>dows are<strong>at</strong>tractive but barely prepare you for <strong>the</strong>magnificent sights <strong>in</strong>side. There is <strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>y snug bar <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end beside <strong>the</strong> door,separ<strong>at</strong>ed by a wooden and leaded glasspanel. This was once a common fe<strong>at</strong>ure<strong>in</strong> Scottish bars where women, or menwho didn't wish to seen, could be served<strong>in</strong> some privacy. On <strong>the</strong> bar are orig<strong>in</strong>alwork<strong>in</strong>g brass w<strong>at</strong>er taps and on <strong>the</strong>gantry is a brass gas cigarette lighter.Opposite <strong>the</strong> bar <strong>the</strong>re is a series <strong>of</strong> mirrorssurrounded by decor<strong>at</strong>ed tiles and carvedwooden pillars beh<strong>in</strong>d fitted settles. There is a separ<strong>at</strong>e, much pla<strong>in</strong>errestaurant <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> back known as <strong>the</strong> GreenThe ra<strong>the</strong>r long walk to McCowan’s Brewhouse(12) takes you past McEwan’s brewery. Thismodern establishment is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> anAmerican brewpub, and is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> newFounta<strong>in</strong> Park leisure complex. Although <strong>the</strong>m<strong>in</strong>imalist <strong>in</strong>terior resembles an aircraft hanger,it has been made more <strong>at</strong>mospheric with <strong>the</strong>addition <strong>of</strong> lots <strong>of</strong> old brew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry pr<strong>in</strong>tsand photos. Unfortun<strong>at</strong>ely <strong>the</strong> home brew wasnot available when I visited; apparently <strong>the</strong>brewer had left and a new one was still be<strong>in</strong>gtra<strong>in</strong>ed. Although <strong>the</strong>re were a few Scottishmicros on sale, I do not feel it is worth walk<strong>in</strong>gall this way unless <strong>the</strong> house beers are back on,so I would suggest r<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g ahead (0131 2288198) before go<strong>in</strong>g.Our f<strong>in</strong>al stop, Thompson’s (13), is handy for anumber <strong>of</strong> Indian and o<strong>the</strong>r ethnic restaurantsshould you feel hungry after all th<strong>at</strong> ale! The Ravenous Dr<strong>in</strong>kervisits <strong>the</strong> Horse Chestnut<strong>Some</strong> notes on <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g works with thanks toGareth <strong>of</strong> Bartch InnsThe works have transformed <strong>the</strong> former Cliffe Inn, with <strong>the</strong> totalconstruction cost <strong>in</strong> excess <strong>of</strong> £400,000 tak<strong>in</strong>g just under four monthsto complete. The works <strong>in</strong>cluded demolition <strong>of</strong> several <strong>in</strong>ternal wallsto open up <strong>the</strong> public area from previously priv<strong>at</strong>e areas. New studdedwalls were <strong>in</strong>stalled to cre<strong>at</strong>e a c<strong>at</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g kitchen, not previously afe<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cliffe Inn. The toilets were completely demolished andrebuilt with <strong>the</strong> reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g wall designed by structural eng<strong>in</strong>eers tosupport <strong>the</strong> house beh<strong>in</strong>d as well as <strong>the</strong> car park and terrace area. Thef<strong>in</strong>al build<strong>in</strong>g work was <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new front steps to allowfor disabled access and to improve <strong>the</strong> facade <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g. The<strong>in</strong>ternal fixtures and fitt<strong>in</strong>gs are all bespoke, constructed <strong>in</strong> Yorkshireand transported to site where <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>in</strong>stalled. This <strong>in</strong>cludes all<strong>the</strong> genu<strong>in</strong>e oak panell<strong>in</strong>g, tiled bar apron and oak parquet floor. The garden has been completely landscaped with <strong>the</strong> demolition <strong>of</strong>a garage. It has now been paved with Yorkstone style slabs readyfor next summer and <strong>the</strong> impend<strong>in</strong>g smok<strong>in</strong>g ban. The works <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>garden <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>the</strong> digg<strong>in</strong>g out and reconstruction <strong>of</strong> new steps <strong>in</strong>to<strong>the</strong> garden area to accommod<strong>at</strong>e public access.Fur<strong>the</strong>r works <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> a high class meet<strong>in</strong>g room on<strong>the</strong> first floor which required a new staircase for public access, and<strong>the</strong> upgrad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accommod<strong>at</strong>ion for <strong>the</strong> two managers who nowhave a communal lounge and kitchen but each have a self conta<strong>in</strong>eden-suite bedroom. The build<strong>in</strong>g work was carried out by Harry Richmond and PartnerLtd. <strong>of</strong> Holme Pierrepont. The <strong>in</strong>terior design and fit was worked froma brief supplied by Karl, Sharon and Gareth <strong>of</strong> Bartch Inns to AndyThornton Ltd. based <strong>in</strong> Elland West Yorkshire. They manufacturedand supplied all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fixtures and fitt<strong>in</strong>gs with a team <strong>of</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ers onsite for four weeks to carry out <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>at</strong>ion.When I moved house <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> October I ga<strong>in</strong>ed a newlocal, a very good one as well. I moved with<strong>in</strong> Radcliffe onTrent and my old local was <strong>the</strong> Cliffe Inn whereas <strong>the</strong> new oneis <strong>the</strong> Horse Chestnut – <strong>the</strong> unusual th<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> it is <strong>the</strong>same build<strong>in</strong>g! Yes we have only moved about 800 yards, wellwith my missus’s sense <strong>of</strong> direction she would have neverfound her way home aga<strong>in</strong> if we had moved any fur<strong>the</strong>r!While we were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> sell<strong>in</strong>g one house andmov<strong>in</strong>g to a new one <strong>the</strong> Cliffe Inn was completely gutted andwith<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al façade a smart brand new pub has emerged. Itis now owned by Bartsch Inns who already oper<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> excellentHorse and Groom <strong>in</strong> Basford and Horse and Plough <strong>in</strong> B<strong>in</strong>gham,so prospects looked promis<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> start and we certa<strong>in</strong>lyhaven’t been disappo<strong>in</strong>ted.The pub is now extremely smart <strong>in</strong>side, with a “library room” to <strong>the</strong>left with comfortable se<strong>at</strong>s and rows <strong>of</strong> book around <strong>the</strong> walls. Thema<strong>in</strong> bar area is on two levels, <strong>the</strong> upper level be<strong>in</strong>g non-smok<strong>in</strong>g.This room is also very plush with plenty <strong>of</strong> polished wood andbrass (ok so I am no good <strong>at</strong> this home <strong>in</strong>teriors lark!). Above <strong>the</strong>upper level se<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g is a large sta<strong>in</strong>ed glass, bubble th<strong>in</strong>g hang<strong>in</strong>gfrom <strong>the</strong> ceil<strong>in</strong>g as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g, none <strong>of</strong> us knew exactlywh<strong>at</strong> it was but it is certa<strong>in</strong>ly a very impressive focal po<strong>in</strong>t.A selection <strong>of</strong> eight well kept real ales is on <strong>of</strong>fer and <strong>the</strong>se changeon a frequent basis. They <strong>in</strong>clude old favourites like B<strong>at</strong>emansXB, Deuchars IPA and Fullers London Pride toge<strong>the</strong>r with beersfrom local micros such as Magpie, Oldershaws, Thornbridge Hall,Belvoir and Gra<strong>in</strong>store. On my last two visits <strong>the</strong>re has not beenone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ubiquitous Greene K<strong>in</strong>g (/Ruddles/Morland) beers onsale and for this <strong>the</strong> pub is especially commended! The Horse Chestnut sets out to be a pub th<strong>at</strong> sells food ra<strong>the</strong>r thana restaurant th<strong>at</strong> sells beer. However <strong>the</strong>re is a very good menu and<strong>the</strong> food is top quality if perhaps just slightly on <strong>the</strong> expensive side. The service is excellent and very friendly, <strong>the</strong>y will take your order <strong>at</strong>your table if you wish and also fetch your dr<strong>in</strong>ks if you are d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.On my last visit I ordered <strong>the</strong> lightly b<strong>at</strong>tered cod with chips andmushy peas. This was no giant piece <strong>of</strong> frozen cod and reconstitutedpot<strong>at</strong>o chips as might be served up <strong>in</strong> some pubs. The fresh fish wason <strong>the</strong> small side but <strong>the</strong> b<strong>at</strong>ter was very light, and <strong>the</strong> chips weremade with proper pot<strong>at</strong>oes and were extremely tasty. The meal wasnot too heavy and went down well with my Thornbridge Hall JaipurIPA and I thought it was a good meal for <strong>the</strong> seven quid I had <strong>in</strong>vested<strong>in</strong> it.On a previous visit I had tried <strong>the</strong> chicken breast with black pudd<strong>in</strong>g,this was served with fresh vegetables and aga<strong>in</strong> was very enjoyable. As was <strong>the</strong> sausage sandwich th<strong>at</strong> I sampled on my first visit, this wasserved with mustard and was extremely tasty, if perhaps a few bobtoo pricey <strong>at</strong> £4.50A selection <strong>of</strong> pudd<strong>in</strong>gs is also on <strong>of</strong>fer and whilst I am not ableto partake our two ladies pronounced <strong>the</strong>ir choice as be<strong>in</strong>g veryenjoyable. Instead, I shared cheese and biscuits, <strong>at</strong> £6.50 for oneperson or £8 for two, which <strong>of</strong>fered an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g selection <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gCornish Yarg and a creamy go<strong>at</strong>’s cheese although to my taste a bluecheese, preferably Colston Basset Stilton, would have complementedit nicely.I can’t f<strong>in</strong>ish without mention<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bogs! These have got to be <strong>the</strong>best pub toilets <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> county – very modern and spacious with crispblack and white til<strong>in</strong>g. All <strong>in</strong> all, my house move has seen me ga<strong>in</strong>one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best locals south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city!Frequent Radcliffe L<strong>in</strong>e buses, from Friar Lane and Broadmarsh BusSt<strong>at</strong>ion, stop almost outside <strong>the</strong> pub – it is <strong>the</strong> third stop after <strong>the</strong> busturns <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> A52 <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> RSPCA. Supasaver tickets are £2.80 each.

A Newark Ale and Angl<strong>in</strong>g TripFour years ago, an article was written <strong>in</strong> issue 50 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>ghamDr<strong>in</strong>ker. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> this article was to prove th<strong>at</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestig<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong>to new towns and <strong>the</strong>ir alehouses could beimplemented <strong>in</strong> conjunction with your favourite pastime. In <strong>the</strong> case<strong>of</strong> Jeremy, my sister, Sara, and myself this pastime was <strong>the</strong> pisc<strong>at</strong>orialart <strong>of</strong> angl<strong>in</strong>g.In 2002 we visited Lenwade <strong>in</strong> Norfolk on <strong>the</strong> river Wensum. Fouryears l<strong>at</strong>er <strong>in</strong> October 06 <strong>the</strong> dest<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ion was on our doorstep. Newarkwas <strong>the</strong> town for our assessment <strong>of</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> it had to <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>in</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ionto real ale and <strong>the</strong> stretch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river Trent between Fiskerton andMuskham was where we hoped to c<strong>at</strong>ch a monster Barbel or Chub.We arrived <strong>in</strong> Newark on Friday 6 th October and booked <strong>in</strong>to ‘Peggy’scottage’ on Appleton G<strong>at</strong>e, a self c<strong>at</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g accommod<strong>at</strong>ion which wehighly recommend should you want to self c<strong>at</strong>er like ourselves for abreak <strong>in</strong> Newark. More importantly it is situ<strong>at</strong>ed with<strong>in</strong> a few m<strong>in</strong>uteswalk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town centre and <strong>the</strong>refore perfect for visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> localpubs without hav<strong>in</strong>g to worry about transport. Four days <strong>of</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>gand three nights <strong>of</strong> ale dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g were ahead so it was quickly agreedth<strong>at</strong> a full cooked English breakfast <strong>in</strong> a café around <strong>the</strong> corner was<strong>the</strong> best way to l<strong>in</strong>e our stomachs for <strong>the</strong> extravaganza ahead. Our first day <strong>of</strong> angl<strong>in</strong>g was spent on a stretch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river Trentnear Muskham. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> fishy objectives was for Sara toc<strong>at</strong>ch a decent size barbel th<strong>at</strong> would put a bend <strong>in</strong> her rod. Thiswas based on <strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past she had only caught wh<strong>at</strong> isknown <strong>in</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g circles as ‘spr<strong>at</strong>s’.The first day proved successfulfor Jeremy who landed one barbeland a chub but less fishy for Saraor myself with approxim<strong>at</strong>elynil fish between <strong>the</strong> two <strong>of</strong> us. Inorder to drown our sorrows (or <strong>in</strong>Jeremy’s case celebr<strong>at</strong>e) we startedour even<strong>in</strong>g dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> OldMalt Shovel with a p<strong>in</strong>t each <strong>of</strong> Rugby No 8. We <strong>the</strong>n cont<strong>in</strong>ueddown Barg<strong>at</strong>e and visited 3 fur<strong>the</strong>r pubs. The Mayze struck us asa very busy pub with few se<strong>at</strong>s available <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> time which was apriority after spend<strong>in</strong>g a tir<strong>in</strong>g day sitt<strong>in</strong>g on our butts already for<strong>the</strong> previous seven hours fish<strong>in</strong>g (hardest game <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world). We<strong>the</strong>refore downed our Tetley and went on to <strong>the</strong> Castle pub wherea selection <strong>of</strong> beers were tasted. These <strong>in</strong>cluded Breconshire GreenValley Bramble beer, Shardlow Mayfly, Milestone Lockkeeper andGamekeepers Folly. All were well kept and very welcome. Added<strong>in</strong>terest to <strong>the</strong> visit was a regular jazz band th<strong>at</strong> complemented <strong>the</strong>beers perfectly. Our last pub <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> night was <strong>the</strong> Old K<strong>in</strong>gs Armswhere Jenn<strong>in</strong>gs Cock a Hoop and Snecklifter and Marstons Pedigreewere on <strong>of</strong>fer. This stop proved more relax<strong>in</strong>g with a more laid back<strong>at</strong>mosphere and a chance to hear ourselves speak. We f<strong>in</strong>ally f<strong>in</strong>ishedour night with a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese take away and <strong>the</strong>n settled for <strong>the</strong> night todream <strong>of</strong> bigger fish for <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day.As Jeremy had already been successful, we decided on S<strong>at</strong>urday t<strong>of</strong>ish <strong>the</strong> same stretch as <strong>the</strong> day before. This time Jeremy and myselfwere both successful <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> land<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> large chub and barbel butalas, Sara had ano<strong>the</strong>r blank. We started to worry and agreedth<strong>at</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r night on <strong>the</strong> real alemight assist <strong>in</strong> psych<strong>in</strong>g Sara upfor <strong>the</strong> objective she still neededto achieve. S<strong>at</strong>urday nighttook us to <strong>the</strong> Fox and Crown,a Tynemill pub and wh<strong>at</strong> weall agreed was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bestpubs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trip. A good selection <strong>of</strong> beers were on <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gDeuchers IPA which we sampled on this particular night. The V<strong>in</strong>ehotel followed with a local out <strong>of</strong> town <strong>at</strong>mosphere and a selection<strong>of</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>ghead brewery beers followed by a visit to <strong>the</strong> Mail Coachand Castle and Falcon on <strong>the</strong> London road respectively. The Castleand Falcon served excellent beers and gave us <strong>the</strong> chance to partake<strong>in</strong> a game <strong>of</strong> pool (or <strong>at</strong>tempt to <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> myself who I h<strong>at</strong>eto admit doesn’t seem to withstand <strong>the</strong> same quantity <strong>of</strong> beer th<strong>at</strong>Jeremy can.) We f<strong>in</strong>ished up across town <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> relaxed surround<strong>in</strong>gs<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Crown and Mitre. Unfortun<strong>at</strong>ely I cannot remember <strong>the</strong> beerwe had and forgot to write it down. However, Jeremy assures me th<strong>at</strong>it cont<strong>in</strong>ued to be <strong>of</strong> excellent quality and re-affirmed <strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong>a diverse and well kept selection <strong>of</strong> ales can be found throughout<strong>the</strong> town centre <strong>of</strong> Newark. F<strong>in</strong>ally, an Indian take away ended ournight. Pressure was on for <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g days sport.Sunday took us to a stretch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river near Fiskerton. Jeremy aga<strong>in</strong>was successful <strong>in</strong> c<strong>at</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g a barbel but unfortun<strong>at</strong>ely Sara failedmiserably aga<strong>in</strong> to land th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong>tended quarry. By this time we hadgiven up on Sara and her quest for success and started <strong>of</strong> our even<strong>in</strong>gsession <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fox and Crown aga<strong>in</strong>. As this was our third consecutivenight out, I am us<strong>in</strong>g this as <strong>the</strong> excuse to expla<strong>in</strong> th<strong>at</strong> time seemedto pass really quickly, as after dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g 3 p<strong>in</strong>ts we noticed it wasalready 10.30pm and decided we should move on quickly before lastorders were called on this Sunday night. Unfortun<strong>at</strong>ely, we wereunable to loc<strong>at</strong>e ano<strong>the</strong>r pub th<strong>at</strong> would serve us and we were left <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> street to discuss our predicament and check our w<strong>at</strong>ches a fur<strong>the</strong>rthree times before call<strong>in</strong>g it a night and mak<strong>in</strong>g our way back to <strong>the</strong>cottage. A fur<strong>the</strong>r Ch<strong>in</strong>ese take away on <strong>the</strong> way back just proves<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence I have on Jeremy and Sara with regards to where to e<strong>at</strong>and shows how unimag<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ive I am when it comes to decisions <strong>in</strong>rel<strong>at</strong>ion to d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g out.Monday was our f<strong>in</strong>al daysfish<strong>in</strong>g and we decided to ignoreSara and leave her to her owndevices on a different stretch <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Trent near Fiskerton. Ourth<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g was th<strong>at</strong> our guidancehadn’t helped Sara up to now andanyway it was a lost cause. Bymid afternoon Jeremy and I had both caught some good Chub andBarbel. Sara cont<strong>in</strong>ued to fish with little enthusiasm by now hav<strong>in</strong>gnot had a bite all weekend. Then by sheer skill (or miracle) she tookboth a big chub and barbel on a hair rigged trout pellet (not <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>same time obviously) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last few hours <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> holiday. Talk aboutdragg<strong>in</strong>g it out and keep<strong>in</strong>g us on tenterhooks! The objective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>holiday was f<strong>in</strong>ally achieved and I’m sure it was all down to <strong>the</strong>decent selection <strong>of</strong> real ale on <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>in</strong> Newark.Carl Y<strong>at</strong>esQuiz No 24 AnswersThe answers to <strong>the</strong> quiznumber 24 on page 231) Annette Crosbie 2) Jimmy Nail 3) Australia4) Michael Kitchen 5) Albert F<strong>in</strong>ney 6) Jill Gasco<strong>in</strong>e7) North Yorkshire 8) Mapl<strong>in</strong>s 9) 4210) Tim Wonnacott 11) Joe Pasquale 12) Fiji13) Dennis Norden 14) Mart<strong>in</strong> Shaw 15) KentDecember 2006 / January 2007 www.nott<strong>in</strong>ghamcamra.org 25

ErewashValleyCover<strong>in</strong>g Sawley, Long E<strong>at</strong>on, Sandiacre, Ilkeston, Cotmanhay, Heanor and Langley MillAfter hear<strong>in</strong>g so much from o<strong>the</strong>r branches about <strong>the</strong> brilliant time<strong>the</strong>y have had <strong>at</strong> Thornbridge Hall Brewery we decided our membersshould have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to hold a social <strong>the</strong>re, so on Thursday5th October a group <strong>of</strong> 13 <strong>of</strong> us set <strong>of</strong>f to Ashford <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> W<strong>at</strong>er.Unfortun<strong>at</strong>ely, it was dark when we arrived so we didn’t get to appreci<strong>at</strong>e<strong>the</strong> splendour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hall and gardens, but on arrival <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>end <strong>of</strong> a long dark lane we were met by Alex and taken through<strong>the</strong> courtyard <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> banquet<strong>in</strong>g hall, where wedd<strong>in</strong>gs, parties ando<strong>the</strong>r large social events are held, <strong>the</strong>n down <strong>the</strong> stairs <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bararea. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> war it was also usedas an air raid shelter forchildren from a priv<strong>at</strong>eschool <strong>in</strong> Sheffield, buthas now been completelyrenov<strong>at</strong>ed, emerg<strong>in</strong>gas a modern but tastefulbar th<strong>at</strong> would put somepubs to shame. From <strong>the</strong> 4 handpumps on <strong>the</strong> bar we were <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>the</strong> award w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gJaipur, along with Kipl<strong>in</strong>g, which has <strong>recent</strong>ly been awardedBeer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Festival from Sheffield branch. There was also a smallp<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> an as yet unamed beer, which didn’t last very long I can tellyou.L<strong>at</strong>er <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g 25 members from Chesterfield jo<strong>in</strong>ed us, <strong>the</strong>selucky people have this brewery under <strong>the</strong> branch jurisdiction, andwere <strong>the</strong>re primarily to hand over ano<strong>the</strong>r award for Beer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Festival from Barrow Hill’s Railfest and also <strong>the</strong> same award butthis time on behalf <strong>of</strong> Peterborough branch.Follow<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ive talk about <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hall and a tour<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> brewery from <strong>the</strong> owner Jim Harrison, it was back to <strong>the</strong> barfor more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> excellent beers on <strong>of</strong>fer, until our m<strong>in</strong>ibus arrivedto pick us up. We’ve decided to make a return trip sometime <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>Spr<strong>in</strong>g or Summer, when we can hopefully enjoy <strong>the</strong> hall and gardens<strong>in</strong> daylight, and <strong>of</strong> course, sample some more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> excellentbeersTHANKS to everyone <strong>at</strong> Thornbridge Hall Brewery for mak<strong>in</strong>g usvery welcome and for a most enjoyable even<strong>in</strong>g.Thursday 26th October saw us <strong>at</strong> The Navig<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> Breaston forwh<strong>at</strong> was called a ‘handover social’ with Derby branch. Nick Tegerd<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong>fers a view <strong>of</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham’s “dr<strong>in</strong>k problems”At a <strong>recent</strong> branch meet<strong>in</strong>g I feel th<strong>at</strong> I managed to explode<strong>the</strong> myth th<strong>at</strong> all people concerned about dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g problems <strong>in</strong>Nott<strong>in</strong>gham are hell bent on clos<strong>in</strong>g pubs. In case you weren’t<strong>the</strong>re, we’re not.Wh<strong>at</strong> we are concerned about is <strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong>:• The dr<strong>in</strong>ks trade wants to promote cheap ‘chemibeer’ toyoung people, <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> expense <strong>of</strong> local jobs and people’shealth• Th<strong>at</strong> pubs no longer have much root <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir community (andguess wh<strong>at</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y are clos<strong>in</strong>g)• Th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘dash for pr<strong>of</strong>it’ is so short sighted th<strong>at</strong> it has notrecognised <strong>the</strong> demographics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess – soon <strong>the</strong>‘vertical dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g bottle bars’ will have a smaller potentialcustomer base than traditional pubs, as people get older anddisposable <strong>in</strong>comes rise; and f<strong>in</strong>ally• Th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> responsible authorities are so bl<strong>in</strong>kered th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>yeven believe <strong>the</strong>ir own sp<strong>in</strong>!Wh<strong>at</strong> we do need to do is get honest. Th<strong>at</strong>’s how someone whohas had ‘too much, too <strong>of</strong>ten for too long’ overcomes a dr<strong>in</strong>kproblem, and th<strong>at</strong> applies to families, communities, cities andregions just as well. Who needs to get honest <strong>the</strong>n?If <strong>the</strong> Police look <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mirror will <strong>the</strong>y see th<strong>at</strong> celebr<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>closure <strong>of</strong> a few pubs for sell<strong>in</strong>g (stupidly and illegally) to underagecustomers is as effective a measure <strong>in</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g alcohol-rel<strong>at</strong>edharm as deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> pubs th<strong>at</strong> repe<strong>at</strong>edly serve drunker adultswould be?If Trad<strong>in</strong>g Standards look <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mirror will <strong>the</strong>y recognise th<strong>at</strong><strong>the</strong>y have contributed to <strong>the</strong> prolifer<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-licences still ableto sell to drunks and children, by not prioritis<strong>in</strong>g test purchas<strong>in</strong>gactivities until rel<strong>at</strong>ively <strong>recent</strong>ly?Will <strong>the</strong> Local Authorities (<strong>the</strong> Licens<strong>in</strong>g body) look <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>irmirror and say “if we work <strong>in</strong> partnership we can reduce alcoholrel<strong>at</strong>edcrime and disorder, improve health and cre<strong>at</strong>e wealth <strong>at</strong><strong>the</strong> same time”? Th<strong>at</strong> would require a really honest look, but itcan be done!F<strong>in</strong>ally, will <strong>the</strong> Pub Cos who care about noth<strong>in</strong>g but <strong>the</strong> bottoml<strong>in</strong>e recognise th<strong>at</strong> unless <strong>the</strong>y demonstr<strong>at</strong>e real leadership, <strong>the</strong>ultim<strong>at</strong>e sanction will be central Government <strong>in</strong>tervention, andth<strong>at</strong> will penalise <strong>the</strong> good guys along with <strong>the</strong> not-so-good anddownright awful.I could go on, but <strong>the</strong>re is a real problem here. The voices th<strong>at</strong> arebe<strong>in</strong>g heard are not those <strong>of</strong> reason. Vale <strong>of</strong> BelvoirH&P VoB POTYAs <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r f<strong>in</strong>ally beg<strong>in</strong>s to turn Autumnal we look forwardto <strong>the</strong> season <strong>of</strong> dark beers & w<strong>in</strong>ter warmers th<strong>at</strong> help to make upfor <strong>the</strong> shorter days & rosy w<strong>in</strong>d chapped cheeks - not to mention<strong>the</strong> effect <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r has on your face.We started our <strong>of</strong>ficial Autumn schedule with a meet<strong>in</strong>g & GBGlaunch <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Oak, Car Colston <strong>in</strong> October. It has to besaid th<strong>at</strong> it was a quiet night, with just our usual VoB turnout <strong>of</strong>regulars. Despite this we had a very pleasant even<strong>in</strong>g & <strong>the</strong> beers& friendly <strong>at</strong>mosphere <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Oak did not disappo<strong>in</strong>t.Our November meet<strong>in</strong>g saw us <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Crown & Plough, LongClawson. We were tre<strong>at</strong>ed to some very nice sandwiches, made withcrusty home made bread. Beers served were an excellent p<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong>Marstons Pedigree & Jenn<strong>in</strong>gs Red Breast, which went down verynicely. Ma<strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess for <strong>the</strong> night was <strong>the</strong> POTY vote, which resulted<strong>in</strong> an almostunanimous votefor <strong>the</strong> Horse& Plough,B<strong>in</strong>gham. It’sbeen hard t<strong>of</strong>ault <strong>the</strong> beers<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ploughthis year.P a r t i c u l a r l yn o t e w o r t h yhave been <strong>the</strong>Sara Hughes, asalways; Exmoor Gold (my only compla<strong>in</strong>t is why can’t we havethis more <strong>of</strong>ten); Gravediggers Mild & very l<strong>at</strong>ely Adnams OldAle & Youngs W<strong>in</strong>ter Warmer. Alan’s beers are consistently servedwell and we know th<strong>at</strong> this award will be a popular choice with alllocal dr<strong>in</strong>kers & CAMRA members. The POTY present<strong>at</strong>ion willtake place on Jan 9 th 2007 - we expect a good turnout!Although it is just out <strong>of</strong> our area it is also worth not<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong><strong>the</strong> reports from Carl & Sharon’s new pub, <strong>the</strong> Horse Chestnut(formerly <strong>the</strong> Cliffe Inn) are very favourable. Indeed we havebeen gett<strong>in</strong>g daily, if not hourly reports from VoB member, MrW. Parsnip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Radcliffe area. We have <strong>in</strong>structed assistantmanager Kalum th<strong>at</strong> if <strong>the</strong> curmudgeonly old soak becomes toomuch <strong>of</strong> a nuisance, just give his b<strong>at</strong>h chair a shove <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direction<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Canadian Est<strong>at</strong>e & any number <strong>of</strong> locals will make sure tha<strong>the</strong> gets home safely. On to Vale pub news - or more accur<strong>at</strong>ely th<strong>at</strong> upd<strong>at</strong>e on <strong>the</strong>seem<strong>in</strong>gly endless changes <strong>of</strong> landlord, refurbishments, etc…Start<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> Marquis <strong>of</strong> Granby, Granby - up & runn<strong>in</strong>gbeh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> bar are M<strong>at</strong>hieu & N<strong>at</strong>halie, French Canadiansfrom Montreal.
