It has been quite a journey and a memorable experience for theSmith family; showing and marketing Simmental cattle and meeting people across Canada & the US.Over the 20 years Big Sky has been breeding full Fleckvieh & polled red factor cattle. We have used AI sires as well as carefully selected herd siresto cover off our 100 purebred and 200 commercial Simmental cows.With the Fleckvieh cattle we have really focused on performance. In 2003 we had the opportunity to purchase the top of RJR Simmentals’ herd,which goes back to the Bar None program. With a mix of powerful cows and our bull power, Carlsberg, Laredo, and Bacardi, we are accomplishingour goals. This is both Carlsberg’s and Bacardi’s first calf crops and we are thoroughly impressed. Although there aren’t any Bacardi bulls in the penthis year, keep your eyes peeled for next year. Laredo is a well-known bull that we purchased from LaBatte Simmentals last year. We are excitedto have all semen rights and ownership of him. With times being a little tough right now, an extra 75-100 lbs in September from the Fleck geneticsmeans more to us than topping the market by $0.03/lb.Our red factor line up was developed from breeding multi polled, and multi red genetics. We have bred some reds back into fullblood genetics to getsome added thickness and yet maintain the red colour and polled genes. Slapshot is a bull we used a lot last year. He is a grand son of DynamiteBlack and came out of a Chuckwagon cow. He is an extremely long bull with loads of performance and is homozygous polled.Whether you are interested in Fleck, polled, and/or red genetics, we feel that we have a set of bulls that can fulfill your needs.
