A Note from <strong>the</strong> PresidentsWelcome to this <strong>Joint</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Meeting</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Canadian Agricultural EconomicsSociety (CAES) and <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>ast Agricultural and Resource EconomicsAssociation (<strong>NAREA</strong>). I’m very much looking forward to this meeting. It is agreat opportunity to get toge<strong>the</strong>r with colleagues to share our knowledge attime where <strong>the</strong>re are so many opportunities and challenges in <strong>the</strong>bioresources. While we face unprecedented grain and energy prices, severalenvironmental, resource and food issues require our urgent attention. Therange <strong>of</strong> topics on <strong>the</strong> conference program reveal <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se verybroad, interrelated issues, and clearly reflects <strong>the</strong> breadth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> economicresearch our organizations are undertaking to deal with <strong>the</strong>m. Thanks to <strong>the</strong>hard work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>NAREA</strong>/CAES program committee this conference providesparticipants with one integrated program that combines <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> bothorganizations.Richard Gray, CAES PresidentIt is my great pleasure to welcome you to <strong>the</strong> joint meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CanadianAgricultural Economics Society (CAES) and <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>astern Agricultural andResource Economics Association. This continues our history <strong>of</strong> jointmeetings, which has been very beneficial on both <strong>the</strong> personal andpr<strong>of</strong>essional levels. I always look forward to this joint meeting. It provides uswith stimulating discussion <strong>of</strong> relevant topics, and with <strong>the</strong> insight gained fromresearch, extension and teaching pr<strong>of</strong>essionals working in different, but highlyrelated, environments. The joint meeting this year is particularly timely, given<strong>the</strong> range <strong>of</strong> food, agricultural and environmental/resources issues that ourtwo countries, and <strong>the</strong> world, currently are facing.
