At New England DragwayMX101MX101 is entering its second full year ofracing and there’s a great lineup in store.We have a full slate of regional motocrossracing action this season with New England’sbest riders competing for championships inNEMX, NESC and NEMA. New to MX101will be the NEATV Series with the best ATVriders from all over the Northeast coming tocompete in the first ATV race early this fall.For those who just want to hone their skillsthere’s more than one mile of challengingtwists, turns and jumps. Open practicesessions are held every Saturday and Sunday8am until 5pm (excluding regional race dates),plus sessions on Wednesday afternoon from1pm until dusk.For those of you with UTV’s, coming laterthis fall will be the new UTV and trophy trucktrack that will be built and combined with themini MX101 youth track. This track will bedesigned for medium speed UTV and truckracing along with room for some monstertruck action as well. For those youth ridersdon’t worry the mini MX101 track will beredesigned and maintained within the newtrack foot print. Staff SPOTLIGHTWaltand SueBennettText and Photos by Mike BradfordIf you have attended any of NewEngland Dragway’s major events inthe past decade, chances are prettygood that your ticket has passed thewatchful eyes of Walt or Sue. Hailingfrom Northwood, the security duo’sregular commute is to the UNHcampus where Walt’s plumbingexpertise has been utilized for the past 35years and Sue has been working on theadministration side of things for 41 ticksof the calendar.How did the pair find their way to thedragstrip? Sue recalls, “Our daughterCory had a horse which can eat moneyalmost as fast as hay, so I needed to geta part time job. I applied and was hired15 years ago. Anybodyreading this can understand how contagiousthe horsepower bug can be. “Notvery long after we started working at thetrack and seeing all of the beautiful cars,we had to have a hot rod of our own,” Waltrecalls. For the past 12 years a bright yellow’41 Chevy business coupe poweredby a 400 hp small block Chevy has filledthe need to cruize very nicely. Not contentto ride shotgun, Sue’s toy for the past8 years has been a 1967 VW convertible.Last year a fire started by a broken fuelline nearly melted the air cooled insect.“The car seemed to run out of gas, so Ipulled over to the side of the road. Thingsin the rear view mirror seemed kind ofbright, that’s when I realized it was fromthe flames coming out of the engine compartment.”Long story short, the fire wasquickly put out and Sue will have her VWback on the road by the time this articlehits the presses. They both are card carryingmembers of the Lone Wolf Cruiserscar club.When asked why they enjoy working atthe track, almost in unison the quick answeris, “We love the management, fellowemployees, fans and racers, who on anyhot day are always keeping an eye on usoffering cold water along with very goodtasting food.” It is very apparent that thereare quite a few people who really loveworking at the fastest piece of real estatein NH including Walt and Sue Bennett.Thanksfrom the crew at Import Face Off10 11The crew from Import Face Offappreciates the support NewEngland Dragway’s importcrowd and proved it by schedulingtwo of their races this yearin Epping. The first event onMay 22, was contested underthreatening skies, but it didn’tdampen enthusiasm. Racers and showcars jammed the gate in hopes of earninga big payday thanks to thousands of dollarsin prize money up for grabs.If you missed the first event, don’tworry. Import Face Off will return to NewEngland Dragway on Sunday, September25. The event will feature race classes fora wide variety of vehicles including streetlegal rides, another giant car show andlots of vendors displaying their wares.
