The eager, cultlike following of <strong>Krogen</strong>owners <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> more al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lines of a large family, asall agree <strong>the</strong> liveaboard comfort of <strong>the</strong>se boats <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>the</strong>ir most endearing feature.The <strong>Krogen</strong> 42 remains <strong>the</strong> most popular of <strong>the</strong><strong>Kadey</strong>-<strong>Krogen</strong> fleet, andsome 206 <strong>Krogen</strong> 42s werelaunched. They can befound in <strong>the</strong> PacificNorthwest, in Alaska, al<strong>on</strong>g<strong>the</strong> Great Circle Route and<strong>the</strong> ICW, throughout <strong>the</strong>Bahamas, and all al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong>U.S. coastlines. The 42 <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> asupremely competent cru<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ingboat that remains a sought-after classic. Although it<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> capable of offshore passages, few use it that way,as <strong>the</strong> lifestyle of its owners <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> more about low-stressgunkholing than crossing oceans. It <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> a real<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>tic boatfor real<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>tic couples choosing to live <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> waterand enjoy <strong>the</strong> many pleasures of <strong>the</strong> waterways.As I’ve commented before, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Krogen</strong> 42 lookshappy, with its jaunty angled foredeck and bow, andmost <strong>Krogen</strong> 42 owners agree that in additi<strong>on</strong> toth<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> happy d<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>positi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> boat has classic lines andprovides loads of usable volume for a 42-foot boat.Unfortunately, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Krogen</strong> 42 got too expensive tobuild towards <strong>the</strong> end of its run, as <strong>the</strong>re were justtoo many molds required to build <strong>the</strong> boat. The costof retooling was not a viable opti<strong>on</strong>, so producti<strong>on</strong>of <strong>the</strong> boat ceased in <strong>the</strong> late 1990s.In <strong>the</strong> years since, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kadey</strong>-<strong>Krogen</strong> lineexpanded with a new model introduced about every3 years. Today <strong>the</strong> company sells a 39, severalvariati<strong>on</strong>s of a 48, and a 58. All share <strong>the</strong> capabilityand comfort that are core elements of <strong>Kadey</strong>-<strong>Krogen</strong> <strong>Yachts</strong>.The <strong>Krogen</strong> 39 was <strong>the</strong> company’s first step insignificantly ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing <strong>the</strong> quality levels in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kadey</strong>-<strong>Krogen</strong> fleet, using higher-quality equipment,products and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> techniques. Compare any oftoday’s <strong>Krogen</strong>s with an early model <strong>Krogen</strong> 42, andyou’ll see many differences behind that classic,happy profile.Several years ago, Kurt <strong>Krogen</strong>, president of<strong>Kadey</strong>-<strong>Krogen</strong> <strong>Yachts</strong>, recognized that <strong>the</strong> companyneeded to build or reintroduce a boat to replace<strong>the</strong> <strong>Krogen</strong> 42, but he knew that simply buildinga newer <strong>Krogen</strong> 42 did not make much sense.After getting lots of input from focus groups madeup of owners with extensive experience <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>original, <strong>the</strong> companydetermined that a new 42would not be differentenough from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Krogen</strong>39. Many thought, though,that a slightly larger boatwould allow for a biggercockpit and permit a fixedhelm chair in <strong>the</strong>pilothouse, two featuresthat were identified by <strong>Krogen</strong> 42 owners over <strong>the</strong>years as w<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>h-l<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>t items.With all of <strong>the</strong> above in mind, <strong>the</strong> design team—Kurt <strong>Krogen</strong>; h<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> marine designer bro<strong>the</strong>r, Jimmy<strong>Krogen</strong>; and <strong>the</strong> folks at Br<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>tol Harbor DesignGroup—went to work. The result <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Krogen</strong> <strong>44</strong>,a yacht that fits squarely between <strong>the</strong> 39 and 48.While it may initially appear that <strong>the</strong> new <strong>44</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> justa new versi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> 42, <strong>the</strong> new <strong>Krogen</strong> <strong>44</strong> actuallyshares very little with its older s<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>tership. Thedifferences between <strong>the</strong> venerable <strong>Krogen</strong> 42 and <strong>the</strong>new <strong>44</strong> are so vast that it <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> difficult to compare<strong>the</strong>m, bey<strong>on</strong>d a similar profile. Whilemost of <strong>the</strong> refinements are inequipment, c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>materials and advancedboatbuilding technology,o<strong>the</strong>r changes were made in<strong>the</strong> design because <strong>the</strong>y madesense. And according to LarryPolster, vice president of<strong>Kadey</strong>-<strong>Krogen</strong> <strong>Yachts</strong>, <strong>the</strong><strong>Krogen</strong> <strong>44</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> built from <strong>on</strong>lythree molds, to simplifyc<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and to eliminateseams and potential leaks.In all, <strong>the</strong> effort took 3 yearsto create, from Kurt’s initialc<strong>on</strong>ceptual design to <strong>the</strong>launch of <strong>the</strong> first <strong>Krogen</strong> <strong>44</strong>,Number One, owned by MikeFord, who also owned <strong>the</strong>first <strong>Krogen</strong> 39. The new boat<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> faster, has more range and<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> a more integrated structuredue to <strong>the</strong> complex butsuperior tooling.I could l<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>t several pages ofchanges, but highlighting afew will give you an idea ofwhat I’m talking about. Theteak decks <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Krogen</strong> 42,much like all boats of thatera, were screwed down and<strong>the</strong> holes bunged and sanded.Over time, <strong>the</strong>se decks wouldwear, and leaks woulddevelop. Many trawlers havehad <strong>the</strong>ir decks refastenedand repaired due to th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>building practice. Today’s teakdecks are glued down withoutmechanical fasteners, so <strong>the</strong>ysuffer n<strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> potentialleak <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>sues. Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> definitely acase of technology advancinga better, higher-qualityproduct.Instead of varn<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>hed-teak exterior doors that arerelatively high maintenance, <strong>the</strong> new <strong>Krogen</strong> <strong>44</strong>features dogged, welded aluminum doors fromThe spacious aft cockpit, with ample room for comfortable seating, <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> a great space forentertaining.
