But its “curb appeal has an understated Frank LloydWright quality to it,” while the interior “evokes a Polynesianescape, with its bamboo detailing, palms and rustic stoneexterior,” she added.“Our guests love the firepit and the meditation garden inthe courtyard,” Stilwell said. “At night we light the torchesand the fire and it’s just beautiful.”She described the hotel’s theme as “Asian zen” and said itwas developed by her father, Richard Catlin, who built theTradewinds after living in Japan for seven years.Shigley raved about the Tradewinds’ 28 guest rooms, which were redone by famed hotel designer Charles Gruell in2004. And she loved the hotel’s “lavish” continental breakfasts. She also recommended the Tradewinds for it location nearCarmel’s “boutiques, art galleries and delicious food shops,”not to mention its proximity to the beach and 17 Mile Drive. She also said, “the location is ideal if you want to spend theday at the Carmel Valley’s numerous tasting rooms and thenhead back to Carmel-by-the-Sea for dinner.”Shigley also observed that “there’s never a bad time tovisit Carmel” with its “mild climate, bounty of local festivals,world-class events and excellent wineries. Early springand late fall offer mild temperatures and shoulder-seasonperks.
