St Andrew’s CollegeHeadmaster’s Newsletter April 2011Message from the HeadmasterDear Andrean CommunityThe Easter Term has drawn to a close after a verybusy and successful term. The rowers have packedaway their blades and the winter sports season, which traditionally begins after the weekend of theSouth African Schools Rowing Championshipsat Roodeplaat, is well under way. The summerterm is quite often disrupted by many differentsporting codes and many boys going on variousfestivals, rowing champs, cricket, waterpolo andbasketball tournaments etc. The school is a muchmore cohesive and united unit in winter with thetwo main sports of rugby and hockey that attract afaithful following and involve 90% of the school. Our relatively inexperienced 1st XV captainedby veteran prop, Robin Murray, has had a baptismof fire having faced two of the top traditional rugbyplaying schools in the country in two of theirthree matches so far. The boys showed admirablecourage against Grey College and actually tookthem on at forward. Against Maritzburg at theGrey High School Festival we faced a veryexciting back line and we conceded a number oftries playing into the wind in the second half. Theboys now move on to the King Edward’s EasterFestival and we hope that many current and past Andreans will turn outto support them in force. The support will be significant, especially on theSaturday afternoon where we face the hosts in what is always an intimidatingfixture on the main rugby field at King Edward’s.COLLEGE SWIMMERSPARTICIPATE AT THENATIONALCHAMPIONSHIPSSt Andrew’s swimmers JontyAndrews, Dylan Ramsay andRalph Goveia participated inthe Level 2 Nationals Gala inCape Town recently.Jonty Andrews made thefinals in the 50m breaststrokeand 100m breaststroke andimproved his times by onesecond and six secondsrespectively.Dylan and Ralph wereMJ Rosslee participating at the Telkom Level 3 Championships Gala
