A Conversation with the Executive Director
Tara Soares
What are the strengths of
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre?
“Our greatest strength lies in the people who work,
volunteer and donate their time and funds to support
us in meeting our mission. The ongoing success
of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre could
not be achieved without their dedication in supporting
our operations and our education, awareness
and prevention programmes.
Our cancer screening and diagnostic facilities for
breast cancer detection are operated by a dedicated
team of seven technologists and a full-time
radiologist. Our Centre screens over 8,500 patients
per year, providing early detection for a large
portion of the “at risk” group for breast cancer.
Without the donations and funding received from
both individuals and corporations we would not
be able to supply the services and
programmes we do today.”
How does Bermuda Cancer and Health
Centre impact the community?
“Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre began in 1946
as an Association to combat tuberculosis; it is one
of the oldest charities in Bermuda, and I believe
the charity’s biggest impact to the Bermuda
community is the ability to provide ongoing
support to address diseases, raise awareness and
support education and prevention programmes
throughout the community.
In today’s world the incidence of cancer is one in
three; there is a lot we can do to assist and support
cancer patients and their families. We work with
both local and overseas clinics and agencies to
provide the most current cancer information and
statistics to support our prevention and awareness
programmes. Our Resource Lending Library is
available daily for anyone who wishes to borrow a
book or just have a quiet and private place to read
or gather information using one
of our computer stations.”
What motivates you as Bermuda Cancer and
Health Centre’s Executive Director?
“As the Executive Director I am motivated
everyday by the dedicated staff, volunteers and
supporters who are all working towards the same
goals – to reduce the incidence of cancer and to
provide the best support possible in the fight
against cancer.”
How important are Bermuda Cancer and
Health Centre’s donors in achieving
the goals of the charity?
“The charity has always received overwhelming
contributions and support from the Bermuda
community. In the past decade alone our
supporters have donated funds that have enabled
the charity to build a dedicated Cancer Resource
Centre as well as provide the community with
access to the most current medical screening and
diagnostic procedures. The recent installation of
two state-of-the-art digital mammography units for
breast cancer screening has positioned Bermuda
Cancer and Health Centre to meet its mandate of
providing the best possible early detection
screening for breast cancer. Looking forward, we
are dedicated to providing the community with
access to the latest technology and equipment to
support cancer detection and in 2010 we will be
fundraising for new equipment applications to
meet this goal.”

Clinical Services
Our commitment to deliver quality care begins with our dedicated and highly
trained staff. Our team of technologists, patient services representatives and a
dedicated full-time radiologist is key to our success in providing exceptional care
to patients.
Digital Mammography Screening and Diagnostic Services
The most important goal of our clinical operation is to provide the highest quality
care and cancer screening and diagnostic services for the Bermuda community.
In April 2008, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre purchased two state-of-the-art
GE digital mammography machines. The new equipment replaced two older
analogue machines and benefits patients by providing superior image quality.
With the addition of these units we are one step closer to providing the most
effective means of early detection for breast cancer, which in turn leads to earlier
treatment opportunity and increased survivorship.
In September 2008 our mammography department received reaccreditation from
the Canadian Association of Radiologists and our clinical team is continually
engaged in ongoing training and development. This means that we can bring the
most current information and technological improvements to our patients.
Our purpose-built facility has enabled us to provide a relaxed and
welcoming environment for the community and we are pleased to have provided
screening and diagnostic mammography for over 8,500
patients during the past year.
Screening for breast cancer in Bermuda is recommended to begin at age
40 years and then annually thereafter. A mammogram is just one of the
tools used to detect breast cancer – an annual clinical examination with a
physician and monthly self examinations are also important
detection methods.

Bone Densitometry
Bone Density analysis for early detection of osteoporosis is a service that
has been available at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre since the year
2000. In April 2009 the Centre purchased a new bone densitometry unit
therefore enabling us to meet our objective of providing the latest
technology for early detection of diseases in our community.
Bone Density testing is used to assess the strength of bones and the
probability of a fracture in persons at risk for osteoporosis. The test,
referred to as bone densitometry or bone mineral density scan (BMD), is a
simple, non-invasive procedure that takes just minutes. Women are four
times more likely than men to develop osteoporosis. Screening
recommendations are for women to have a baseline test at the age of
menopause and follow-up screening is determined based on the
individual’s risk of developing the disease.
Ultrasound Service
Ultrasound is another diagnostic tool which can assist in the detection of
cancer. Since 2005 Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has provided
ultrasound scans for a broad range of examinations such as obstetrical,
gynaecological, abdominal, prostate and soft tissue.
Education and Awareness
At Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre we value the importance of working closely
with our community and other health and cancer care agencies in raising
awareness, to assist with not only the prevention of cancer but also in early cancer
detection and treatment.
Our education and awareness goal for this year was to continue to provide the
community with information and support that will empower individuals to make
healthy life choices to reduce the incidence of cancer and other harmful diseases.
Highlights of our Education and Awareness Programmes
Breast Cancer Awareness Month: “A Future Without Breast Cancer” was the
message for this year’s October Breast Cancer Awareness month. The underlying
significance was the importance of healthy lifestyles that will assist in the
prevention of cancer.
1st Annual Cancer Forum with our Cancer Partners: On March 14th, local
cancer partner agencies hosted the 1st Annual Cancer Forum which was held at the
Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI). This forum provided an
opportunity for our community to come together and learn more about local
medical and non-medical support agencies available to cancer patients and their
families in Bermuda.
Awareness Programmes: Throughout the year various awareness campaigns and
programmes were provided, including events such as: free prostate cancer
screening clinic and; lung, skin, prostate and ovarian cancer awareness campaigns.
Initiatives: As we strove to achieve our mission to educate, promote and
provide support, we were pleased to have delivered 142 presentations
throughout the year.
Corporate, Government, Community and Public Awareness
Programmes– wellness and health presentations provided throughout the
community.
SunSmart School Presentations –Teacher and child focused presentations
that provided information and knowledge about good sun safe behaviours.
SunSmart Summer Camp Staff Training – This programme was provided
to teachers and counsellors to develop the teacher’s tool box to reinforce
good sun safe behaviours in our children throughout the year and thereby
preventing future skin cancer.

Fundraising 2009
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre completed the three year digital mammography
fundraising campaign by making the final payment on the two digital machines in December
2008. In January 2009, we initiated fundraising for programmes that support newly
diagnosed cancer patients and survivors during their journey through cancer.
Every one of our donors makes a valuable and much appreciated contribution to the work of
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. Together, they contributed $667,624 during the year,
making a positive difference to the lives of cancer patients, their families and loved ones.
Our fundraising efforts are supported by strong community ties. Bermuda Cancer and Health
Centre made considerable efforts throughout the year to provide information on Centre
activities and donor contributions to patients, families, donors and other supporters. In
addition to the advertising campaigns, considerable free publicity was generously provided
by the print and broadcast media and this contribution is also highly valued.
Annual Charity Golf Raffle – September 2008
5th Annual Charity Golf Classic – September 19th, 2008: Through the generous
held throughout the month including: 12th Annual Fun Walk sponsored by BF&M, Girls’
Night In, Denim Day, and a free public Health Seminar on “The Genetic Risk of Breast
Cancer”. Tremendous support was also received from a number of additional community
events where proceeds were donated to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.
Annual Christmas Seals Campaign – November / December 2008: With the
Thanks to
Our Volunteers
Volunteers from every arena - survivors, patients, families and loved
ones, schools, civic leaders and corporations – provide time and
resources that assisted us to further our work. Our volunteers gave
their time and talents to support our charity from the simplest to the
most complex and specialised tasks. We cannot thank them enough
for being there for us and responding to our call for help with
mailings, making telephone calls, raffle ticket and tag day sales, just
to name a few. Their involvement contributes significantly in
driving Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre forward in the fight
against cancer.
We would also like to thank the members of Bermuda Cancer and
Health Centre for their generous and continued commitment to our
work.
