Christus RexAtlanta, GA(1985)Christus Rex,commissionedin 1985 for St.Patrick’s Episcopal Churchin Atlanta, Georgia, isa larger-then-life bronzesuspended above the headsof the parishioners in frontof a stained glass windowalso designed by RichardMacDonald. Recallinga medieval religioussculptural tradition,MacDonald’s Christ speaksto a modern audience. Fullyrobed, he is poised in midstep,reaching forward andoutward with his upturnedpalms, his face soft andwelcoming. MacDonaldsculpted Christus-Rexwith a great awarenessof its ultimate placement:he incorporated exquisitedetail into the soles ofthe feet and the surfacesthat would be seen frombelow just as Michelangeloundercut the hair andfeatures of his David,originally designed for oneof the high buttresses of theDuomo in Florence.
