The Unfinished Mission Story“But Sergio did not improve.”It’s the only line I can still remember ofthe first mission story I ever had to tellat church. When I w<strong>as</strong> 10, my fourthgradeteacher somehow cajoled me intomemorizing and then telling the missionstory from the Mission Quarterly, and—terrors!—presenting it to the Sabbathschool members in the large congregationshe attended.As best I can recall, Sergio w<strong>as</strong> a smalland very ill boy from Brazil, who desperatelyneeded medical help from a churchrunclinic. And try <strong>as</strong> I may, I still can’trecall how the mission story turned out.All I have left of it is that rather ominoussoundingfragment: “But Sergio did notimprove.”Needless to say, I’ve thought a greatdeal about Sergio over the years. Eachtime I meet a Sergio in my travels aroundthe world—and there are many—I <strong>as</strong>kmyself, “Could this be him? Is this theboy from the mission story 40 years agowhose health w<strong>as</strong> heading the wrongdirection?”I’m not the only one for whom themission stories of this worldwide movementhave been greatly influential. Asyou’ll learn from this month’s cover feature,“100 Years of Mission Giving,” millionsof Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong>s aroundthe globe have for 100 years been findinginspiration, motivation, and worthy projectsto support in the mission stories toldwith such color and skill. The thirteenthSabbath offering—long a tre<strong>as</strong>uredopportunity to push forward the missionof the church—h<strong>as</strong> built schools andchurches and seminaries and publishinghouses—and hospitals, maybe even theone where Sergio sought help.Pray <strong>as</strong> you read this month’s editionof <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>World</strong>. Pray for a heart thatstill seeks to know how the mission storywill finally come out, and for aheart made generous by grace.By the grace of God, andbec<strong>au</strong>se you continue tocare, Sergio will yet improve.WORLD REPORTSouth America:<strong>Adventist</strong> Outreach Seeks GreaterMember Engagement■ Lay evangelism w<strong>as</strong> the focus of a 200-person gathering of SouthAmerican Division leaders recently, held at the Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong>Church’s headquarters in Br<strong>as</strong>ília, capital city of Brazil.Luis Gonçalves, who coordinated the meetings, said one of themain discussion topics for the group w<strong>as</strong> the development of trainingfor lay evangelists in all countriesand regions. The initial goal is toempower more than 1,400 laypeople,who then would perform morethan 2,000 outreach programs.“Members will engage in evangelismin a practical way,” saidGonçalves.Evangelism is not limited onlyto prophecy seminars and othertopics during a set time period. Raimundo Gonçalves, who coordinates outreachstrategies in this region of Brazil, explains that more than 8,000 peoplewere trained in person or via satellite in an 18-month period.“I see greater mobilization in churches, and consequently baptismsoccur with people better prepared for the spiritual challenges,”Gonçalves says. Ted N. C. In one of his presentations, Taddeinoted, “he showed a clip about a couple from Atlanta withthree children who moved to a dangerous neighborhood ofthe city. The RomanianUnion presented an interesting “health bus,” madejust for health expos, reminding us that indeed the righthand of <strong>Adventist</strong> outreach is the health message.“I knew the program, I knew the guests, but when I setmy eyes over the be<strong>au</strong>tiful mountains and the little stonyroads of Bobbio Pellice, it made me think back to the dayswhen these rocks protected the religious freedom here inItaly,” said Salvatore Cutrona. “I’ve found it very appropriateto have these meetings right here in the Waldensian valleys,especially after the message that P<strong>as</strong>tor Wilson sharedwith us on revival and reformation.”These kinds of meetings give the opportunity of communicationbetween the church and the lay members whoare involved in personal ministries. As Wilson said:“Church leaders cannot do it all by themselves.”“The Lord h<strong>as</strong> been good to us in Bobbio Pellice, sendingmore than 400 witnesses from different Europeancountries to this special Waldensian valley, the scene of somany memories of their faithfulness to carry the truths ofthe Bible,” said Bruno Vertallier, EUD president.Along with the hundreds of participants, the eventdrew the attention of at le<strong>as</strong>t one significant media outlet:L’Osservatore Romano, the official daily newspaper of theHoly See in Rome, published a report of nearly 1,000words noting the <strong>Adventist</strong> event and commenting on thediscipline and evangelistic fervor of the participants. We knowthat this is God’s Advent movement;this is His remnant church; these areHis three angels’ messages; the sanctuarymessage is His truth; and His finalwarnings to the world are the messageswe are to proclaim. But do wereally believe these things? Our onlysafety is in God’s Word.Do you believe? You know it istime; it is time to stand up and speakthe truth—in love—but to speak thetruth! Jesus is coming soon!Let’s briefly look at the familiarstory of Elijah the Tishbite—the veryhumble individual, the reformer, thesimple man, the straightforward personwho had a burden for Israel. Elijahprayed to God to change the course ofIsrael, and God answered his prayer.Prayer and the Elijah MessageElijah knew the essential truth forhis time and all time: Prayer is powerful.God can do incredible things <strong>as</strong>you invite Him to change the course ofwhatever is facing you or the church.Never minimize the power of prayer.No matter what we are going through,or what we may face; no matter wherewe have to stand for truth, God will seethis church through! Prayer is a powerfulprotection against the devil’s insidiousplans.After Elijah prayed, he w<strong>as</strong> ready togive a special message to the king.Although Ahab “did more to provokethe Lord God of Israel to anger than allthe kings of Israel who were beforehim” [1 Kings 16:33], Elijah w<strong>as</strong> notafraid. The prophet walked straight intothe palace. P<strong>as</strong>sing by the guards, hegave no defense of his entrance or apologyfor arriving unannounced, bec<strong>au</strong>sehe knew he w<strong>as</strong> on God’s mission.Striding straight into the king’spresence, Elijah proclaimed: “As the8 <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>World</strong> | November 2012


Lord God of Israel lives, before whomI stand, there shall not be dew nor rainthese years, except at my word” [1Kings 17:1]. Then he disappeared.People both in and outside of theroyal courts soon heard about theprophecy, and they made fun of God’sprophet. “Ahh, what does Elijah know?It h<strong>as</strong> always rained; it is going torain,” they ridiculed. Just <strong>as</strong> today,there were many skeptics and manycynical people.So begin with this understanding,brothers and sisters: As you preach theElijah message today, you will be ridiculed—beprepared for it. Thank Godand claim Matthew 5:11, 12: “Blessedare you when they revile and persecuteyou, and say all kinds of evil against youfalsely for My sake. Rejoice and beexceedingly glad, for great is yourreward in heaven, for so they persecutedthe prophets who were before you.”Blaming the MessengerAs the results of Elijah’s prophecybegan to become evident, Ahab’swicked wife, Jezebel, denounced Elijah<strong>as</strong> the source of the problem. Hereagain is a lesson for God’s l<strong>as</strong>t-daypeople. Many times when you arestanding for truth, those who hear thetruth you are sharing will denounceyou <strong>as</strong> the problem. And so the Israelitessaid, “If we put Elijah out of theway, all of our troubles will be over.”When Elijah could not be found,Jezebel w<strong>as</strong> furious and killed all ofGod’s prophets she could find. WhenGod dried up the rain in the landbec<strong>au</strong>se of the sins of His people, Jezebelwatered the ground with the bloodof His servants. But in the third yearof the drought, God gave anothermessage to Elijah: “Go, present yourselfto Ahab and I will send rain onthe earth” [1 Kings 18:1].At l<strong>as</strong>t, the two were face to face—Ahab, the proud king, and Elijah,God’s humble but fearless servant.Notice how this dramatic confrontationunfolds: Ahab <strong>as</strong>ks a most interestingquestion: “Is that you, O troublerof Israel?” [verse 17]. It w<strong>as</strong> aremarkably strange question. Godhad tried to turn Israel around, toreform the nation, to turn His peopleback to Him. Ahab knew—<strong>as</strong> allwicked men ultimately know—thatwhat he w<strong>as</strong> doing w<strong>as</strong> wrong, but hetried to justify himself. In the bookProphets and Kings we read: “It is naturalfor the wrongdoer to hold themessengers of God responsible for thecalamities that come <strong>as</strong> the sure resultof a departure from the way of righteousness.Those who place themselvesin Satan’s power are unable tosee things <strong>as</strong> God sees them. Whenthe mirror of truth is held beforethem, they become indignant at thethought of receiving reproof ” [pp.139, 140).Great Courage NeededHow is it with you and with me?Are we ready to receive God’sreproof in our own lives? Are wewilling to humble ourselves andaccept the changes that a loving Godurges us to make?Elijah showed great courage at thistense moment, and we may courageouslyfollow his example. He w<strong>as</strong>known <strong>as</strong> a person who routinelydeclared, “Thus saith the Lord.” Hespoke truth distinctly and bravely.Three thousand years later God stillneeds strong men and women tospeak His truth clearly, in love, andwith the power of the Holy Spirit.Responding to Ahab’s accusation,Elijah offered a powerful defense: “Ihave not troubled Israel, but you andyour father’s house have, in that youhave forsaken the commandments ofthe Lord and have followed the Baals”[verse 18]. Then he l<strong>au</strong>nched hisappeal: “Now therefore, send andgather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel,the four hundred and fiftyprophets of Baal, and the four hundredprophets of Asherah, who eat atJezebel’s table” [verse 19].Standing FirmUnder divine direction, Elijahchose Mount Carmel bec<strong>au</strong>se it w<strong>as</strong> amost conspicuous place to displayGod’s power. The text tells us that itw<strong>as</strong> early in the morning when thousandsgathered near the top of thatgreat mountain rising up from theco<strong>as</strong>tal range. Jezebel’s prophetsmarched to the site in all their gorgeousarray; the king in his regal robesarrived; and Elijah stood alone.Pointing to the impossibility ofgenuine faith coexisting with evilpractices, Elijah demanded that hislisteners make a choice. “How longwill you falter between two opinions?”the prophet <strong>as</strong>ked the people. “‘If theLord is God, follow Him; but if Baal,follow him.’ But the people answeredhim not a word” [verse 21].I had the great privilege a fewweeks ago to be in Israel for the firsttime and to see Mount Carmel from adistance. Unfortunately, time did notallow us to visit that incredible placewhere this magnificent event tookplace. I’ve imagined myself at MountCarmel many times: have you putyourself in that picture, too? Wouldyou be willing to stand firm for God?God’s Word tells us that the Israeliteswere afraid to reveal anything abouttheir commitments. “The Lord abhorsindifference and disloyalty in a time ofcrisis in His work,” wrote Ellen Whitein Prophets and Kings. “The wholeuniverse is watching with inexpressibleinterest in the closing scenes ofthe great controversy between goodand evil” [p. 148]. Friends, whether weappreciate the fact or not, the wholeuniverse is watching us right now tosee what we will do, how we willchoose. This is no moment for equiv-November 2012 | <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>World</strong> 9

Let usstand loyally for God’s truth.Pointing to the 850 prophets, Elijahmade the proposal that they preparean altar and sacrifice, and he would dothe same. “Then you call on the nameof your gods,” he instructed them, “andI will call on the name of the Lord; andthe God who answers by fire, He isGod” [1 Kings 18:24]. The terms ofthis contest were clear, simple—anddramatic. Everyone, prophets of Baalincluded, agreed with the plan.What followed next w<strong>as</strong> one of thestrangest—and saddest—scenes insacred history. Hundreds of men, supposedlyworshippers of a powerfulpagan deity, flailed and cut themselves,trying to get their god to sendfire. Sharpening the crisis, at noon,Elijah began to t<strong>au</strong>nt them: “Cryaloud, for he is a god; either he ismeditating, or he is busy, or he is on ajourney, or perhaps he is sleeping andmust be awakened” [verse 27].Brothers and sisters, the God of theSeventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong> Church doesnot sleep. He is wide awake, “for theeyes of the Lord run to and frothroughout the whole earth, to showHimself strong on behalf of thosewhose heart is loyal to Him” [2 Chron.16:9]. We have a God who will hear usand will see us through to the very end.Rebuilding the AltarAt the end of the day Elijahrebuilt God’s altar and <strong>as</strong>ked thatsomething unusual be done. Raisingthe drama yet another notch, Elijahcommanded that a trench be dugaround the altar, and that water bebrought and poured on the sacrifice.Three times the sacrifice w<strong>as</strong> inundated—untilwater filled thetrenches. Then at the time of thelong-forgotten evening sacrifice ofthe sanctuary service, Elijah prayed <strong>as</strong>imple prayer of faith: “ ‘Hear me, OLord, hear me, that this people mayknow that You are the Lord God, andthat You have turned their heartsback to You again.’ Then the fire ofthe Lord fell and consumed the burntsacrifice” [1 Kings 18:37, 38].The amazing display of the truthof God’s Word burned up more thanthe evening sacrifice: it also burneditself into the imaginations of God’speople for centuries to come. Like me,I know you wish you could have beenthere. As with the pillar of fire thatprotected and separated the childrenof Israel from the pursuing Egyptianarmy, God w<strong>as</strong> again demonstratingthat He alone is both true and powerful.That same God will go with you <strong>as</strong>you go about your Father’s business.Stunned by the power of Elijah’sGod, the people bowed in submissionto God. “The Lord, He is God! Cardiov<strong>as</strong>cularDise<strong>as</strong>eYour question probes intothe whole process of thechanging face of heart dise<strong>as</strong>ein the world at large and in low- tomiddle-income countries in general.Cardiov<strong>as</strong>cular dise<strong>as</strong>e (CVD)became the single largest c<strong>au</strong>se ofdeath worldwide in 2004, when it w<strong>as</strong>estimated that it c<strong>au</strong>sed 17 milliondeaths. This figure continues to grow.Low- and middle-income countriesare seeing an alarming and acceleratingincre<strong>as</strong>e in rates of cardiov<strong>as</strong>culardise<strong>as</strong>e. CVD now c<strong>au</strong>ses themost deaths in all developing regions,with the exception of Sub-SaharanAfrica; in this part of the world CVD isthe leading c<strong>au</strong>se of death in thoseover 45 years of age. Infectious dise<strong>as</strong>essuch <strong>as</strong> HIV and AIDS, malaria, andlower respiratory tract infections continueto be the leading c<strong>au</strong>se of deathin the young in Sub-Saharan Africa.There h<strong>as</strong> been a change in thepattern of dise<strong>as</strong>es over the p<strong>as</strong>t 150years. Before 1900, infectious dise<strong>as</strong>esand malnutrition were the leadingc<strong>au</strong>ses of death in almost every part ofthe world. If one added to this thehigh infant and child mortality rates,the mean life expectancy w<strong>as</strong> approximately30 years. LandlessI read about the problem of coronary heart dise<strong>as</strong>e in industrialized countries.I live in Sub-Saharan Africa and am saddened by our significant problemwith HIV and AIDS, but wonder whether this part of the world is at riskfor the heart dise<strong>as</strong>e that seems so prominent in affluent countries. Do wewho live in low- to middle-income countries need to be concerned about theproblem of coronary heart dise<strong>as</strong>e?deaths, and these were mainly relatedto rheumatic heart dise<strong>as</strong>e (rheumaticfever) c<strong>au</strong>sed by streptococcal infections,and heart muscle damage (cardiomyopathies)related to other infectionsand malnutrition.As nutritional knowledge incre<strong>as</strong>ed,<strong>as</strong> public health me<strong>as</strong>ures improvedsanitation, and <strong>as</strong> water cleanliness andimmunization became common practices,there w<strong>as</strong> a decre<strong>as</strong>e in infectiousdise<strong>as</strong>es. Life expectancy incre<strong>as</strong>eddramatically, and in a number of countriesthe child and infant mortality ratedeclined. During this time cardiov<strong>as</strong>culardise<strong>as</strong>es accounted for between 10to 35 percent of deaths and includedrheumatic valvular heart dise<strong>as</strong>e,hypertension (high blood pressure),coronary heart dise<strong>as</strong>e, and stroke.It is sadly ironic that nutritionalpractices c<strong>au</strong>sed the pattern of dise<strong>as</strong>esto change even further. In technicalterms an epidemiologic transition tookplace: degenerative and human-madeconditions (noncommunicable dise<strong>as</strong>es)have come to the fore, and cardiov<strong>as</strong>culardise<strong>as</strong>es now account forbetween 35 and 65 percent of deaths,mainly from coronary heart dise<strong>as</strong>eand stroke. The factors that are largelyresponsible for this change in dise<strong>as</strong>epattern include the incre<strong>as</strong>ed intake ofW O R L D H E A L T Hsaturated fats and calorie-dense foods(commonly known <strong>as</strong> junk foods), <strong>as</strong>well <strong>as</strong> decre<strong>as</strong>ed physical activity.These have fueled the emergence ofhigh blood pressure and degenerativearterial dise<strong>as</strong>e (atherosclerosis). Inmany parts of the world, physical activityis declining, there is an epidemic ofoverweight and obesity, and the rates ofhigh blood pressure, type 2 diabetes,and abnormal blood fat levels (cholesterol)are incre<strong>as</strong>ing—even in children.Sub-Saharan Africa h<strong>as</strong> not beenleft unscathed by this mega challengeof cardiov<strong>as</strong>cular dise<strong>as</strong>e. Incre<strong>as</strong>edurbanization h<strong>as</strong> led to changes innutritional patterns, physical activityh<strong>as</strong> decre<strong>as</strong>ed, and obesity is a growingproblem. It is currently estimated that40 percent of women in South Africaare overweight. Tobacco use also continuesto incre<strong>as</strong>e in low- to middleincomecountries, further incre<strong>as</strong>ingthe risks for coronary heart dise<strong>as</strong>e.Population risk-factor profiles ofdeveloping countries are mimickingthe developed countries more andmore. Regular exercise, a diet rich infruits and vegetables, avoidance ofsaturated fats, and the avoidance oftobacco in all its forms are essential ifyou wish to avoid heart dise<strong>as</strong>e.In short, practice the healthy<strong>Adventist</strong> lifestyle. D E V O T I O N A LStanding seems to be harder than sitting. Standingseems to be harder than falling. Even walking seemsto be e<strong>as</strong>ier than standing. Have you ever noticedhow much e<strong>as</strong>ier it is to walk around in circles, goingnowhere, or to pace the floor back and forth inside aroom—going toward the wall, then back toward theother wall, then back toward the first wall again—insteadof just standing? You know you aren’t going anywhere.But it’s e<strong>as</strong>ier to walk up and down going nowhere thanit is just to stand.They don’t know what to do. But they know they can’tjust stand there. They have to do something.So they start up a chant about going back home: “Thesons of Israel looked, and behold, the Egyptians were marchingafter them, and they became very frightened. . . . Theysaid to Moses, ‘. . . It would have been better for us to servethe Egyptians than to die in the wilderness’ ” (Ex. 14:10-12).*This is, of course, untrue, but is one consequence of the feelingthat we can’t just stand there—we must do something. Itis a feeling that inspires triple confusion.StandingBy Lael CaesarYou don’t alwayshave to do something.Have you ever heard the command: “Don’t just standthere! Do something!” Do what? Nobody can necessarily tell,but it’s better than just standing there. Just standing is problematic.Something, it seems, is wrong with standing, evenwhen you don’t know what else you can do besides stand.The Urge to ActYou and I both have a question about that: We want toknow the origins of, and b<strong>as</strong>is for, that desperate humanurge—the urge to do something even when we have noidea what. Old Testament history points us to onemomentous occ<strong>as</strong>ion when desperate humans respondedto that urge. It is a point in Israel’s story during whichGod is rescuing Abram’s children from trouble. He wantsto take them to a place where they can live well and free.They have to cross the sea, and they don’t have any boats.12 <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>World</strong> | November 2012


Life is not first a physical matter.It is first and l<strong>as</strong>t a spiritual matter.Three Times WrongFirst, we forget who and whose we are. As the psalmistreminds us, it is God who made us (Ps. 100:3). It w<strong>as</strong> not alottery prize that got Israel to the Red Sea; it w<strong>as</strong> God’s personalguidance (Ex. 6:6). At the edge of the sea, <strong>as</strong> everbefore, they were in God’s hands. But they had simply lostfocus on who and whose they were, and how they had gotto where they were.How did any of us get here? Genesis tells us. “In thebeginning God . . .” (Gen. 1:1). We need to remember ourbeginnings. But this is not the only area in which weblunder by insisting that we must do something. We’realso yielding to a major and very attractive and popularself-deception: We see ourselves <strong>as</strong> in charge of thingsthat will collapse if we do not act. Listening to Israel whenwe think those thoughts, we may hear the folly of ourown words. For Israel’s request is to return to slavery.A historic answer to such thinking comes from theNegro spirituals of America’s South. Some are quitefamous: “Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry mehome.” “River Jordan is chilly and cold, chills the body butnot the soul; river Jordan is deep and wide, milk and honeyon the other side.” Though they sound like heaven, thosesongs were very earthly signals, too. People who toiled inslavery sang them to give hope to themselves and theirbrothers and sisters. Those who heard the singing got amessage: the freedom runners were coming to smugglemore slaves out of their hellhole. Neither physical nor spiritualslavery is anything to want to go back to. One of thosesongs says, ‘Before I’d be a slave I’ll be buried in my grave!’Wanting to go back to slavery makes no sense. But it’s thekind of folly that is expressed when I think I have to dosomething.A third and most tragic implication of this flawedthinking is that we’re mostly denying God the chance to beGod: Listen to Moses tell us what God wants us to do:“Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear! Stand by and seethe salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for youtoday; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, youwill never see them again forever. The Lord will fight foryou while you keep silent’ ” (Ex. 14:13, 14).What to Do, ThenSo what are we supposed to do when we don’t know whatto do? According to Moses, the answer is stand up! But you arefrightened. You’ve seen the Egyptians. Your legs are melting!You want to sit down before you faint. You are scared, and youdon’t know what to do anyway! So what? What does Godwant you to do? Well, two things that are just one thing: Hewants us to do nothing; and He wants us to stand.The Septuagint [Greek] translation of “stand” in Exodus14:13 uses the same term that appears in Ephesians6:11. The word is histemi—“stand” in its intransitive sense.“Stand,” you see, can mean “set up,” which means that I amin charge, <strong>as</strong> in “I stood the chairs up in a row.” And wewould love to have that <strong>au</strong>thority. But humans are not incharge of the universe. We are in trouble. Everybody sinceAdam’s sad misdirection h<strong>as</strong> been in trouble. And we willnot get out of trouble by pretending to be in charge, or byturning and running.What would happen to amputees if running away werethe answer? Besides, running is a cowardly answer. Butwhen P<strong>au</strong>l talks to his Ephesian saints, he offers the answerof standing that Moses recommends in Exodus. When hesays to stand, he’s talking specifically about seeing Egyptiansbearing down on you, or feeling the force of evil bearingdown to crush you, and standing up. Having the powersof darkness threaten and l<strong>au</strong>nch their fiercest charge,and standing up. Standing is the message of Ephesians 6:11,for able-bodied souls, and for quadriplegics. That’s bec<strong>au</strong>sestanding up depends on more than legs.I thank God for an answer that does not discriminateagainst the physically less endowed. For life is not first aphysical matter. It is first and l<strong>as</strong>t a spiritual matter. AndGod who gives us life, regardless of whether we have legsor not, h<strong>as</strong> made it possible for every one of us to standup. He provides the armor in which we may “stand firmagainst the schemes of the devil. A D V E N T I S T S E R V I C EBy Celeste Ryan BlydenTranslatorof the W ordTranslating the Bible intomodern Russian is a fearsome yetrewarding responsibilityGOD’S WORD IN RUSSIAN: From his office in Takoma Park, Maryland, U.S.A., MikhailKulakov, Jr., oversees a team that is translating the Bible into modern Russian.standing,’” he reads in full crescendo.The goal, he says, is to find thebest words and idioms to render themeaning of the original Hebrew andmatch them with words typical fortoday’s Russian culture. “Scripturew<strong>as</strong> written over a period of 1,000years, and over that time languagechanged,” says Kulakov, who matriculatedfrom Newbold College in England,the Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong>Theological Seminary in Michigan,and the Oxford University’s ChristChurch College, where he earned aDoctor of Philosophy in theology.“It’s important to keep the linguisticnuances in mind.”That’s why he and a dozen othertranslators, some of whom live eightOn the third floor of the SligoSeventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong> Churchoffice building in TakomaPark, Maryland, in a tiny white-walledattic with three windows, MikhailKulakov, Jr., is waxing poetic aboutmerging the p<strong>as</strong>t with the future.“The t<strong>as</strong>k of a translator could becompared to a musician transposing apiece written for violin and readying itfor guitar,” he says. One end of hisdesk is completely covered with openbooks and Bibles, a lamp, a smatteringof office supplies, an open laptopcomputer, and a black enc<strong>as</strong>ed iPad 2.The professor of philosophy on a fiveyearleave from W<strong>as</strong>hington <strong>Adventist</strong>University (WAU) rehearses the Russiantranslation of the Bible he hopeswill be useful for public worship andpersonal devotional study.“As we work on each phr<strong>as</strong>e andp<strong>as</strong>sage, we read it aloud to see if itretains the melody and rhythm of theoriginal,” he notes. “This morning Ireviewed Jeremiah 51:15 in the KingJames Version.” He peers at the text and,with arms in full accompaniment, conductsan orchestra of words that streamforth melodiously. “‘He hath made theearth by his power, he hath establishedthe world by his wisdom, and hathstretched out the heaven by his undertimezones away in Russia, painstakinglyresearch, write, review, andrewrite each text. “We go back and findthe original Hebrew, study the definitionsof each term, consult the Russianliterature datab<strong>as</strong>e to see how the bestwriters through the centuries used theverbiage in the most appropriate, fittingand closest context,” he shares. “Wechoose a variant, sleep on it, review itprayerfully and critically, and send it tophilologists—specialists in languagestudies of syntax, style, and usage—who can tell us if it sounds like perfect,natural, good Russian that is the bestequivalent for the original phr<strong>as</strong>e.”And so it goes—phr<strong>as</strong>e by phr<strong>as</strong>e,text by text, p<strong>as</strong>sage by p<strong>as</strong>sage, chapterby chapter, book by book, and year by14 <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>World</strong> | November 2012PHOTO BY CELESTE RYAN BLYDEN

The process h<strong>as</strong> taken more thantwo decades, and so far the team h<strong>as</strong>completed and published the Psalmsand the New Testament (2002); the fivebooks of Moses, known <strong>as</strong> the Pentateuch(2009); and Daniel and the 12minor prophets (2011), all projects ledby the fourteenth and founding memberof the translation team, Kulakov’sfather, role model, and namesake, thelate Mikhail Petrovich Kulakov, Sr.Talking about his father’s death in 2010and carrying on his dream to translatethe Bible is a “fearsome responsibility”that his son finds moving and, at thismoment, nearly overwhelming.Strong HeritageAccording to Guillermo Biaggi,president of the Euro-Asia Division(ESD), it w<strong>as</strong> 22 years ago that MikhailKulakov, Sr., had the dream. “As the firstpresident of the Euro-Asia Division, hewanted to translate the full Bible intomodern language, bec<strong>au</strong>se the currentRussian translation of the Holy Scripturesis 130 years old,” he says.Biaggi, now president of Kulakov’shome division, sits in his office on thefirst floor of the four-story divisionheadquarters in Moscow. Biaggi, executivesecretary Volodymyr Krupskyi,and tre<strong>as</strong>urer Brent Burdick shepherdthe <strong>Adventist</strong> Church’s work in 13countries including Russia, Moldova,Belarus, Armenia, Ukraine, andAfghanistan. They have the largestland territory of the Seventh-day<strong>Adventist</strong> Church’s 13 world divisions.“Russia alone h<strong>as</strong> nine time zones,”Biaggi says, pointing to a large framedmap on his office wall. The ESD h<strong>as</strong> amembership of 137,000 out of 315million inhabitants.Although the church Biaggi leadsexemplifies resilience and growth, theynow face a new crisis: postmodernism.“We used to share literature, but nowpeople spend more time on the Inter<strong>net</strong>,”he explains. He talks of riding theextensive underground subway systemin Moscow, a metro area of 15 million,many of whom struggle with alcoholism,domestic abuse, tobacco, addictions,or emptiness. “They are lookingfor something, and we have the answer,”he posits. “We are committed to bringingthis gospel of hope to them.”At the division’s Zaoksky <strong>Adventist</strong>Seminary and Institute 70 miles southof Moscow some of the translators areworking with Mikhail Kulakov, Jr. InMay Biaggi, nine union presidents, thepublishing house president, and otherleaders of the v<strong>as</strong>t ESD convened theirBible Translation Institute board. Kulakov,Jr., who helped found Zaoksky inthe 1990s, attended with fellow boardmembers Weymouth Spence, presidentof W<strong>as</strong>hington <strong>Adventist</strong> University(WAU); and Zack Plantak, chair ofWAU’s Department of Religion.During his report Kulakov sharedhow the meticulous work of the translationteam is drawing encouragingreviews from leading Russian philologiststouting the be<strong>au</strong>ty of the language.He also shared how specialistsin biblical languages have noted its“accuracy and high literary and scholarly”work, and that leading RussianOrthodox scholars have given positiveevaluations for its literary and scholarlyquality. <strong>Adventist</strong> leaders, readers,and donors underwriting this projectare also ple<strong>as</strong>ed and anticipate thecompletion of the translation by 2015,in time for it to be distributed at theGeneral Conference session in SanAntonio, Tex<strong>as</strong>. “People who have readthe finished portions say, ‘Now I canunderstand the Word of God,’” saysBiaggi, who chairs the board.All of this spurs Kulakov and histranslation team forward and keepsthem going around the clock betweenMaryland, United States, and Zaoksky,Russia. “When I go to bed at nighthere, it’s morning there, and they startwork,” he explains. “And when theyfinish their day, it’s morning here, andI review their latest version.” Now thatthey’ve finished Jeremiah and theother major prophets, they Skype,live-chat, telephone, and e-mail aboutdrafts of their current work on thepoetic and wisdom literature of Job,Proverbs, and Song of Songs.Back in his office at Sligo church,Kulakov is trying to articulate why hisfather’s legacy h<strong>as</strong> become his life’swork. “I started working with myfather in 2006, and I don’t know if inmy lifetime I will participate in anything<strong>as</strong> important, rewarding, joyous,or humbling <strong>as</strong> this project.“I remember when he w<strong>as</strong> workingon Genesis 5:22, which reads in KingJames, ‘Enoch walked with God,’” hesaid. “Out of their desire to be reverent,ni<strong>net</strong>eenth-century Russian scholarsinstead chose ‘Enoch walked beforeGod.’ But having suffered throughhumiliation and loss of dignity inJoseph Stalin’s labor camps, my fatherwanted new generations of Russians toexperience a God who stands at thedoors of human hearts, respectfullyknocks, and waits to see if we will inviteHim to enter,” he says, p<strong>au</strong>sing to gatherhimself. On Sabbath, January6, 1912, Sabbath school members wereintroduced to “a new plan” through <strong>as</strong>mall eight-page pamphlet that wouldlater become known <strong>as</strong> the Sabbathschool Missions Quarterly, publishedby the Sabbath School Department ofthe General Conference.“Our Sabbath-school offeringshave incre<strong>as</strong>ed so splendidly that it isthought we may now have a specialobject for which we may set apart thegifts of one Sabbath in each quarter,”announced the cover page. “The GeneralConference Committee h<strong>as</strong> votedto allow us to select the l<strong>as</strong>t Sabbath ineach quarter <strong>as</strong> a day when we maydonate to a special object.”Thus, the special Thirteenth SabbathOffering program w<strong>as</strong> begun,along with the mission quarterly,helping to focus the attention of thechurch on the specific regions andprojects that would benefit from thequarterly Thirteenth Sabbath Offering.This, of course, w<strong>as</strong> in addition tothe regular mission offerings that werecollected each Sabbath and sent tomissions around the world.Members were encouraged to mingleprayer with their gifts. “By intelligent,prayerful, cheerful giving, ourgifts may be multiplied <strong>as</strong> were the fiveloaves and two fishes, and a multitudeblessed thereby,” urged the first MissionsQuarterly. “Pray <strong>as</strong> you give. In everySabbath-school on that day [ThirteenthSabbath], let there be a se<strong>as</strong>on of prayerin behalf of the cities of India.” 9Early ProjectsThe cities of India were selected tobe the recipients of the first Thir-islanders were waiting to be baptizedand join the Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong>Church. 7 After its mission to Pitcairn,the boat sailed on to Tonga,the Cook Islands, Samoa, and Fiji,continuing its missionary work forseveral years.Children were some of the mostenthusi<strong>as</strong>tic supporters of this specialmission project. One boy helped hismother pop popcorn over the family’swood-burning stove to make hunteenthSabbath mission offering. Fornearly a year J. L. Shaw, “superintendent”of the India Union Mission, hadbeen writing letters to the MissionBoard: “At the l<strong>as</strong>t General Conferencewe pled for a minister for that greatmetropolis of Calcutta. The boardmade an effort to answer the call; but<strong>as</strong> you know, no help h<strong>as</strong> yet beensent. Many prayers, letters, andappeals for the work in Calcutta havesince been written, and still no helph<strong>as</strong> come. I am hoping, praying, andbelieving that help will soon be sent toIndia.” 10 In another letter Shaw wrote:“The great Lord of the harvest surelysomewhere h<strong>as</strong> men and means topioneer the way.” 11Shaw’s prayers were answeredwhen more than $7,500 w<strong>as</strong> given forevangelistic work in the large cities ofIndia in the first Thirteenth SabbathOffering, and George W. Pettit and J.M. Comer, along with their families,were sent from the North PacificUnion Conference to work in India.Today approximately 900 ordainedand licensed Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong>ministers work in nearly 4,000churches throughout India. 12Other special mission offering projectsin 1912 included a new missionstation on the Selukwe Reserve in Rhodesia(Zimbabwe), homes for missionariesin China, India, Korea, and Africa,a school in Argentina, known then <strong>as</strong>River Plate Academy, and the PúaTraining School in Chile.Limping AlongWriting to the secretary of the GeneralConference, W. A. Spicer, the presidentof the South American UnionConference, J. W. Westphal, explainedthe dire situation at River Plate Academy:“We are limping along <strong>as</strong> best wecan. . . . In the large schoolroom [thechapel] three cl<strong>as</strong>ses have to recite atthe same time, bec<strong>au</strong>se the cl<strong>as</strong>sroomsabove are used <strong>as</strong> living-rooms for thestudents. Unemploymentw<strong>as</strong> high and income low, and yet Sabbathschool mission offering boxeswere overflowing <strong>as</strong> members faithfullyfollowed the “60 cents per week” missionoffering plan, providing the meansto help millions of people in need.In 1931 Dr. A. Arzoo, who w<strong>as</strong>serving in Sultanabad, Pakistan, told ofone such need, which w<strong>as</strong> published inthe Missions Quarterly: “Some timeago a young girl w<strong>as</strong> brought to me fortreatment. Her throat w<strong>as</strong> in a verybad condition. A dreadful dise<strong>as</strong>e w<strong>as</strong>eating its way into the flesh. A prescriptionw<strong>as</strong> given to her people, andthey were told to buy the ampule andcome back to the dispensary. They allwent to get the medicine, but theynever returned. I suppose they couldnot pay for the medicine, and were tooembarr<strong>as</strong>sed to come back. It wouldhave cleared up her condition, andthus she would have been cured andwould not have been a source of infectionto others. . . . Many are sick whocome to us for treatment, but we donot have the necessary equipment andsupplies, and we are obliged to turnmany away bec<strong>au</strong>se we cannot gobeyond our budget.” 15Sabbath school membersresponded with a mission offeringthat year of $2.5 million to help withthis and many other needs in the MiddleE<strong>as</strong>t region, <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> in Africa,India, Burma, and Inter-America.Telling the StoriesIn 2012 the Sabbath school MissionsQuarterly, now known <strong>as</strong> <strong>Adventist</strong>Mission, turned 100. For the p<strong>as</strong>t centurythis small publication h<strong>as</strong> faithfullychronicled the needs of missionsaround the world and h<strong>as</strong> inspiredyoung and old to give to the specialThirteenth Sabbath Offering projects.Schools and universities, hospitals,clinics, and orphanages, printing pressesand Better Living centers, churches andchapels, dormitories and evangelistic$4.47training centers, libraries and mediacenters, youth campgrounds, and Biblelesson materials in local languages cameinto existence through the generosity ofthose who gave to the ThirteenthSabbath Offering.These offerings have helped tosend thousands of missionaries andinterdivision workers, Global Missionpioneers and lay evangelists, doctors,dentists, nurses, teachers, and p<strong>as</strong>torsto serve in every part of the globe.Special mission offerings havehelped to provide materials for evangelisticoutreach, radio and televisionprogramming, broadc<strong>as</strong>t equipment,satellite broadc<strong>as</strong>t time, literature,books, and video and online Biblestudies. Theseand many more resources are availableonline at www.<strong>Adventist</strong>Mission.org.Trends in Mission GivingWhile the amount given to worldmissions during the p<strong>as</strong>t century isimpressive, one <strong>as</strong>pect that might beoverlooked is the ratio of mission givingcompared with tithe dollars. In 1912,the average per member tithe incomew<strong>as</strong> $14.48. Mission offerings that yearwere an average of $4.47 per member. In1932 during the Great Depression, theaverage per member tithe had decre<strong>as</strong>edto $13.08 but mission offeringsincre<strong>as</strong>ed with an average of $5.83 permember. By 2010, the average per membertithe had risen to $127.20, but missionofferings were very close to the1912 figure, with an average of $4.56 permember. The 2010 level of mission givingw<strong>as</strong> $1.02 lower than in 1932. 16The good news is that in 2011 missiongiving w<strong>as</strong> up from the previousyear, with an average of $5.01 per member.During the fourth quarter of 2011the second-highest Thirteenth SabbathOffering on record w<strong>as</strong> given—a totalof $763,660 to help support workamong refugees and Native Americansin the North American Division.Mission Needs TodayMission needs today are even greaterthan they were back in 1912, accordingto Gary Kr<strong>au</strong>se, <strong>Adventist</strong> Missiondirector at the world church headquartersin Silver Spring, Maryland, U.S.A.“There are more people on earthtoday who are not <strong>Adventist</strong>s thanthere were a hundred years ago,” saysKr<strong>au</strong>se. “Thousands will die in thenext 24 hours who have never evenheard the name of Jesus. Some 300million kids will go to bed hungrytonight. So if our mission work isestablished, it certainly isn’t finished.”POCKET-SIZED:The first missionquarterly from 1912fits e<strong>as</strong>ily into <strong>as</strong>hirt pocket. Today’squarterlies arepacked with thrillingstories in a colorfulmagazine format.Acknowledging that per-capitamission giving h<strong>as</strong> dropped duringthe p<strong>as</strong>t few decades while the percentageof funds being given to thelocal church h<strong>as</strong> incre<strong>as</strong>ed during thattime, Kr<strong>au</strong>se doesn’t think it h<strong>as</strong> to bea c<strong>as</strong>e of “either/or.”“I know it takes a huge amount ofmoney to run a successful local churchprogram in places such <strong>as</strong> NorthAmerica,” he admits. “We must faithfullysupport our local church, but wecan’t forget our needy brothers andsisters around the world.“If it weren’t for mission offerings,we would have to close down much ofthe church’s mission program—itsmedical, educational, humanitarian,and spiritual outreach to the world.Our wholistic mission perspectiveencomp<strong>as</strong>ses the globe, not just ourcorner. We care about people—irrespectiveof where they live, their skincolor, or the language that they speak.“Mission is the lifeblood of theSeventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong> Church. Takeaway the Great Commission, and webecome an inward-looking club focusedon our own needs and interests. We loseour fire. These were the days when a day at the beachseemed to stretch out into a blissful eternity of sandand surf. The days never seemed to end. But the reality w<strong>as</strong>that they always did end. I remember feeling disappointedwhen eventually we had to jump in the car and go home.I learned that <strong>as</strong> we grow, and see favorite toys break,friendships end, and even loved ones die, we painfully learnthe apparent truth that all good things come to an end.Just Wait a MinuteBut it is a lie! Don’t believe it! God <strong>as</strong>sures us that ultimatelyHe will make what is good l<strong>as</strong>t forever; and thosethings that bring harm and sadness will ce<strong>as</strong>e to exist. Theday will come when His promise will be fulfilled, and God“will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shallbe no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying,nor pain anymore, for the former things have p<strong>as</strong>sed away”(Rev. 21:4). 1 God’s people will live with “everl<strong>as</strong>ting joy”(Isa. 35:10). This seems so contrary to the natural order ofthings <strong>as</strong> we experience them today that the natural questionto <strong>as</strong>k is “How will God bring this about? How will Heput an end to sin and ensure that joy reigns throughout theuniverse forever?”Here Is HowGod tells us that at the Second Coming the faithful saintsof God who sleep in death will be resurrected (1 Thess.4:16). God calls this the “first resurrection” (Rev. 20:6; cf.John 5:29), and He calls those who take part in this resurrection“blessed and holy” (Rev. 20:6). We can all be part of thisresurrection by remaining faithful to Jesus and to His Word(verse 4). Also at the second coming of Jesus, sinners and allthe works of sin will be burned up (2 Peter 3:10; Rev. 19:20,21). The resurrected saints will reign with Jesus in heaven for1,000 years (Rev. 20:4, 6). During this time Jesus will allowthe saved to review His work of love in the lives of all ofhumanity, and all their questions will be answered (verse 4).At the end of the 1,000 years the Holy City, the NewJerusalem, comes down from heaven to earth with all ofthe redeemed (Rev. 21:1, 2). At this time the unrepentantdead are raised. This is the second resurrection, and thenumber of the sinners raised “is like the sand of the sea”(Rev. 20:8). Now Satan, having been “rele<strong>as</strong>ed from hisprison” (verse 7), gathers the resurrected wicked for hisfinal attack against God and His people (verse 8). I used to<strong>as</strong>k myself why Satan would even bother. It is at this time that the final ph<strong>as</strong>e of the judgmentwill take place, before the great throne of God (verses 11,12). Before the universe the love and sacrifice of Jesus areagain displayed, and the lives of all those who have rejectedsalvation are reviewed. As the entire universe sees the loveand righteousness of Jesus, it is then that “at the name ofJesus every knee [will] bow, in heaven and on earth andunder the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christis Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil. 2:10, 11).Jesus already receives the worship of the rest of the universe,but now, one by one, sinners too will bow, until, atl<strong>as</strong>t, Satan himself will bend the knee in Jesus’ presence.After this great universal acknowledgment of the loveand justice of Jesus, sin and sinners will be destroyed forever(Rev. 20:9, 10). This is the second death, from whichthere is no resurrection; it is an eternal death. Sin and sinnerswill ce<strong>as</strong>e to exist.A New CreationNow that the “former things have p<strong>as</strong>sed away” (Rev.21:4), God declares, “Behold, I am making all things new”(verse 5). God gives us His personal guarantee that He willdo it, saying to the apostle John, “Write this down, for thesewords are trustworthy and true” (verse 5). It is of this newearth, of this new creation, that the apostle P<strong>au</strong>l wrote, “Noeye h<strong>as</strong> seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined,what God h<strong>as</strong> prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor. 2:9).The ways in which the apostle John described the newearth were only his feeble attempts to portray with humanwords things that are ultimately indescribable in our language.However, we can be confident that the wonderful descriptionsof Revelation 21 and 22 will be finally fulfilled. This earth willhost the capital city of the universal dominion of Jesus Christ,and it will be the final and true home of the redeemed. Perhapsthe most exhilarating promise of all is the simple statementthat we “will see his face” (Rev. 22:4). No more images;no more metaphors; no more symbols—only Jesus.For me, the closing words of The Great Controversy sayit best: “The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners areno more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmonyand gladness beats through the v<strong>as</strong>t creation. FromHim who created all, flow life and light and gladness,throughout the realms of illimitable space. In many places theTorah, a parchment scroll of the firstfive books of the Bible—<strong>au</strong>thored byMoses—is read from the platform.A Jewish flavor permeates theproceedings, even the potluck suppers.And while the congregations arethoroughly <strong>Adventist</strong>—using the sameSabbath school quarterly (edited byClifford Goldstein, a Jewish <strong>Adventist</strong>)and holding the same doctrines <strong>as</strong>other congregations around theglobe—there’s something differenthere. Worshipping one God and HisSon, the Messiah, dozens of Jewish<strong>Adventist</strong> congregations are demonstratingthe connection between theSabbathkeepers of ancient Israel andmany of God’s followers today.ofGrowing in number, ancientand modern sabbatarianfaiths connect.sage to be understood by those who maybe unfamiliar with any Christian beliefs.“The change I have seen is tremendous,”Elofer told <strong>Adventist</strong><strong>World</strong>. “In the 1990s we had no Jewish<strong>Adventist</strong> congregations in theworld; today we have about 40 ofthem, 25 just in the United States.Each of these congregations is doinga great job of witnessing to Jews thatJesus is the Messiah. Before startingthis contextualized ministry, Jewswere coming to the church, but theydid not stay; after three to five yearsthey left the church. Today our ministryis so great that Jews have foundtheir place in the church and stay andremain <strong>Adventist</strong>.”In Florida, Jeff Zaremsky, a JewishSeventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong> p<strong>as</strong>tor, focuseson reaching out to Jewish people in amanner they e<strong>as</strong>ily understand. Healso works with the church’s NorthAmerican Division to spearhead Jewishevangelism efforts, which will in2013 include Shalom Adventure, aWeb site introducing people to theJewsTheAdventismStill ChosenFrom the bustling metropolis ofBuenos Aires, Argentina, to the AmericanJewish neighborhoods of LosAngeles, Miami, and New York City, toIsrael’s teeming streets and beyond—Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong>s are reachingand receiving Jewish believers in bothJesus and the three angels’ messages.Richard Elofer, a longtime worker inthe field of Jewish <strong>Adventist</strong> outreachwho heads the church’s <strong>World</strong> Jewish<strong>Adventist</strong> Friendship Center, b<strong>as</strong>ed inFrance, estimates there are between4,000 and 5,000 Jewish <strong>Adventist</strong>sactive in the church today.That may not seem like many, butit’s far more than have ever beenrecorded before, Elofer said. The difference,which he h<strong>as</strong> seen during 23 yearsof working to reach Jews, is a ministryapproach that understands the Jewishmind-set and adapts the <strong>Adventist</strong> mescommonbeliefs between Jewish and<strong>Adventist</strong> faiths.“We have unique literature,”Zaremsky told attendees at the 2012<strong>Adventist</strong>-laymen’s Services andIndustries (ASI) convention. “We havecongregations that look like Jewishtemples [synagogues], and the servicesthat are conducted in a way that isvery Jewish-friendly.”He added, “The Jewish culture isstill so much different, especially whenwe get into religious circles. The terminologyis different, and so muchabout it is different it’s like a totallydifferent foreign language.”Rooted in HistoryThere’s ample re<strong>as</strong>on for this: After2,000 years of what many Jews call theCommon Era, i.e., the time after Jesus’life and ministry (often referred to <strong>as</strong>the Christian Era in Christian circles),many Jews have become wary of, indifferentto, or even hostile to the gospelmessage. Even more,many Jews firmly believe that if oneis born a Jew, one should remain oneall their life, and die <strong>as</strong> a member ofthe Jewish faith.The post-Holoc<strong>au</strong>st bursts of ecumenismand understanding betweenJewish and Christian leaders havedone a lot to lessen that tension, however.At the same time, the existentialpressures of modern life have ledmany Jewish people into spiritualsearching: many avowedly “secular”Jews are open to spiritual conceptsand discussions, and thus are potentiallyopen to the <strong>Adventist</strong> message.Elofer’s life is an illustration ofthis: an Orthodox Jewish boy fromMorocco, he w<strong>as</strong> a teenager living inFrance when he met an <strong>Adventist</strong>family, who befriended him. Theyshared their mutual belief in the Sabbathand eating food the Bible permitted,and read Bible p<strong>as</strong>sages thatElofer imagined had to be differentfrom the “Jewish” Bible he’d receivedwhen he w<strong>as</strong> confirmed <strong>as</strong> an adultmember of the Jewish faith, a ceremonycalled bar mitzvah, literally,“son of the commandments.”Elofer w<strong>as</strong> surprised. “When I gothome, I opened my Jewish Bible tocheck if what [they had] read w<strong>as</strong> thesame, and to my surprise it w<strong>as</strong>. Progressively,I accepted [these] teachingsand four or five years later agreed tobe baptized.”His conversion changed his life,but not without cost: “For OrthodoxJews to become Christian, it is likedying; that is why my father mournedfor me, and I did not see my father forabout eight years. Today my parentslive in Israel, and my father is still <strong>as</strong>strong a Jew <strong>as</strong> he w<strong>as</strong> 30 years ago: hegoes to synagogue every day for hisprayers. We can speak together, butnot about religion,” Elofer said.Elofer, who h<strong>as</strong> served <strong>as</strong> presidentof the <strong>Adventist</strong> Church in Israel for 15years, says the situation there is far differentfrom earlier years: “After about100 years of presence in Palestine/Israelwe had only 50 members. Zaremsky told theASI <strong>au</strong>dience he will participate therein Jewish outreach in establishinghealth centers and other efforts.Elofer said that it’s important forthe <strong>Adventist</strong> Church to welcome Jewishbelievers. “We don’t have to be suspiciousabout Jews who become Seventh-day<strong>Adventist</strong>s—we have to trustthem,” Elofer said. “They are faithful<strong>Adventist</strong>s and faithful to the Seventhday<strong>Adventist</strong> Church and to [its] historyand heritage. AmongChristian ministers there are only a few who feel calledupon to labor for the Jewish people; but to those who havebeen often p<strong>as</strong>sed by, <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> to all others, the message ofmercy and hope in Christ is to come.In the closing proclamation of the gospel, when specialwork is to be done for cl<strong>as</strong>ses of people hitherto neglected,God expects His messengers to take particular interest inthe Jewish people whom they find in all parts of the earth.As the Old Testament Scriptures are blended with the Newin an explanation of Jehovah’s eternal purpose, this will beto many of the Jews <strong>as</strong> the dawn of a new creation, the resurrectionof the soul. As they see the Christ of the gospeldispensation portrayed in the pages of the Old TestamentScriptures, and perceive how clearly the New Testamentexplains the Old, their slumbering faculties will be aroused,and they will recognize Christ <strong>as</strong> the Savior of the world.Many will by faith receive Him <strong>as</strong> their Redeemer. . . .Among the Jews are some who, like S<strong>au</strong>l of Tarsus, aremighty in the Scriptures, and these will proclaim withwonderful power the immutability of the law of God. TheGod of Israel will bring this to p<strong>as</strong>s in our day. His arm isnot shortened that it cannot save. B I B L E Q U E S T I O N S A N S W E R E DDoes theBible sayanything abouttattoos?It doesn’t say much. Incultures around theworld tattooing h<strong>as</strong> beena common practice forages. So your question isabout an ancient practicethat continues to be part ofthe human experience in manyplaces. Tattoos are usually understoodto refer to designs or symbols or art on the bodyby inserting, through the use of certain instruments,ink or colorants under the epidermis. Human skinis used <strong>as</strong> a natural canv<strong>as</strong>. There is also what some call scartattooing, the result of intentionally searing or scratchingthe body to create some type of mark or pattern.I will first discuss the role of tattooing in biblical times,then the biblical text, and finally make some comments onthe issue.1. Tattooing in Biblical Times and Today: In the worldof the Bible tattoos indicated social status; e.g., a slavewould be inscribed with the name of his owner or of theowner’s god. They could also have religious significance.The name or symbol of the god w<strong>as</strong> tattooed on the person.They could be made for protection, e.g., to shield theperson from the attacks of evil powers. These three uses arefound almost everywhere in the ancient world, and inmany places today. In the Western world tattoos have traditionallybeen <strong>as</strong>sociated with sailors, gangs, and bikers, butthis h<strong>as</strong> changed. In the c<strong>as</strong>e of gangs, tattoos are b<strong>as</strong>icallyexpressions of rebellion and solidarity among members ofthe gang. A growing number of evangelicals in NorthAmerica are using tattoos to express their commitment toChrist. Tattooing is no longer restricted to certain marginalizedsocial groups; it is estimated that at le<strong>as</strong>t 24 percentof Americans have a tattoo. It is now perceived to be an actof self-expression, often commemorating an importantevent in the life of the person, or to have some other symbolicmeaning (e.g., talismanic power). The fact that celebritiesin sports and movies have tattoos makes the practicepopular. Nevertheless, about 25 percent of those who havetattoos will remove them from their bodies.2. Tattoos in the Bible: The Bible says very little abouttattoos. The main text is Leviticus 19:28, which is part of a26 <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>World</strong> | November 2012Markedcollection of laws in which pagan practices related to thedead are forbidden. The meaning of the Hebrew wordqa‘aqa (“tattoo”) is uncertain, but b<strong>as</strong>ed on postbiblicalHebrew, it is traditionally rendered “tattoo.” This is confirmedby the second noun, ketobet (“mark”), which isb<strong>as</strong>ed on the verb “to write.” This is about writing somethingon the body. The phr<strong>as</strong>e is taken <strong>as</strong> an idiom meaning“a tattoo” (“Do not put a tattoo on yourselves”). Oftenthe tattooing mentioned is interpreted <strong>as</strong> referring to apagan expression of mourning. But this is not clearly indicatedin the text. And <strong>as</strong> far <strong>as</strong> I can tell, ancient mourningrituals did not include tattooing. The prohibition may referto religious tattooing.3. Word of Advice: The p<strong>as</strong>sage discussed above doesnot support tattooing. No specific re<strong>as</strong>on is given for theprohibition, except that Leviticus 19 is a call to holiness.Therefore, the law aims at instructing God’s people on theway of holiness. Holiness expresses itself not only in thespiritual realm but in and through our bodies, which aretemples of the Holy Spirit. We are called to glorify Godwith our bodies (1 Cor. 6:19). We can also add thathumans, created in the image of God, are to reveal thatimage through their bodies and the way they treat them.Mutilations and tattoos may fall into this category, andcould be seen <strong>as</strong> damaging God’s creation. We should alsokeep in mind that the body is not something we own, butwho we are. It is a gift from the Lord; it belongs to theLord. Therefore it would be better for Christians to abstainfrom tattooing.But let me end with a word of c<strong>au</strong>tion: We should notsit in judgment against those who, for some re<strong>as</strong>on, havedecided to have a tattoo. Our churches should be open,willing, and ready to welcome any person who wants toworship with us. Whatabout inherited tendencies toward evil p<strong>as</strong>sed downfrom generation to generation? Have you ever felt<strong>as</strong> if you were being pulled down by forces beyond yourcontrol? Have you ever felt powerless to change yourbehavior? There is hope. The One who died for us lives forus. Jesus is both our Savior and our Lord. In this lessonwe will explore the mighty, life-changing power of ourliving Lord, and discover a power greater than heredity,environment, or cultivated tendencies toward sin.1 Read 2 Corinthians 5:17, Ezekiel 36:26, 27, andJeremiah 24:7. What marvelous promise is made tothose who choose to follow God totally and surrenderto His will?2 Read Jeremiah 13:23. Is it possible to accomplishthis change in our own strength?Just <strong>as</strong> it is impossible for anyone to change his or herskin color, much less for a leopard to change its spots, it isimpossible for us to make changes in our lives alone,unaided by the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit’s power thattransforms us. When Jesus <strong>as</strong>cended to heaven, He promisedto send the Holy Spirit in all His fullness to empowerus to live godly lives.3 Read 2 Corinthians 13:4, 5. How does this lifetransformingchange take place within us?As we surrender our lives to Christ, He works His miracleof divine grace in our lives. His power is ours. The HolySpirit transforms us. Just <strong>as</strong> when we do the confessing,God does the forgiving, when we do the surrendering, Goddoes the changing.4 Read Hebrews 4:2 and Romans 5:1-5. What roledoes faith play in this divine transformation?Faith trusts God both to save us and to change us. It isthe channel through which the rivers of His divine graceflow into our lives. Faith accepts the salvation Jesus sofreely offers and the life-changing power He promises.5 Read Romans 8:8-11. As Jesus enters our livesthrough the Holy Spirit, what does He give us?In Romans 8 P<strong>au</strong>l discusses living “in the flesh” and living“in the Spirit.” If we are alive in the Spirit, Christ’s righteousnessfills our lives and flows out of our lives. TheSpirit that raised Christ from the dead transforms us.6 Read Galatians 5:24, 25. What is the greatestevidence that Jesus dwells in our hearts?The greatest evidence that the Holy Spirit dwells in us isnot talking about the Holy Spirit but the change that comesin our lives with the genuine presence of the Spirit. Whenthe Holy Spirit dwells in us, we are simply different people.7 Read John 5:30; 8:29. What w<strong>as</strong> the one principlethat guided Jesus’ decisions and actions?Jesus w<strong>as</strong> guided by the all-consuming principle ofple<strong>as</strong>ing His heavenly Father; nothing w<strong>as</strong> more importantto Him than doing the Father’s will.
