Transportation officials to request
reductions of 5 mph on
Capitol Hwy in the town center,
tha Street safer. The neighborhood
association hopes marked
crosswalks result from the gastax-funded
Safe Street’s initiative
undertaken by Sam Adams,
commissioner for transportation.
Another project being presented
to Adams is a sidewalk
Metro.
Mark your calendar because
the elected Metro Council is
coming to Hillsdale on Thursday,
Nov. 29, at 5 pm, at Wilson
High School. The meeting,
arranged by Metro Councilor
Robert Liberty, is to explore how
Metro can help nurture Hillsdale’s
town center as a “model”
for the region. Those interested
in preparing a presentation for
the meeting are invited to a
meeting Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7
pm. Location to be announced.
Neighborhood Small Grant
Project: We will discuss projects
for which we might seek
funds under this city program.
Community outreach was the
focus of our first grant: funds
supported our website and
signs for neighborhood events.
We need suggestions for a new
grant application: November 1
is the deadline. Suggestions include
neighborhood sign caps
and/or welcome signs, community
events such as a garden
tour, and a concert in one of our
parks. Another idea is to build
on our neighborhood’s concerns
for its parks and natural environment
by helping organize a
Naturescaping workshop, possibly
in conjunction with an ivypull
day.
Street Vacation: Tom Miller
will present his proposal for
street vacation at a dead end to
build a garage and a pathway.
September Meeting Report
1. Parks Bureau: Terri Davis,
Southwest Services Manager
for the Portland Parks Bureau,
explained the bureau’s organization
and goals. She asked
those attending to express their
park concerns. Members raised
concerns about saving the Lilac
Garden at Duniway Park, perhaps
by raising the grade; parking
in Duniway Park, cleaning
up the Norris house foundation
on Terwilliger Parkway, renew-
ARE YOU READY
FOR WINTER ? ? ?
If you think you are, or aren’t
sure, attend our next meeting
on November 13th to find out
what to have on hand at home
to get by in case of power failure
and in your car in case you get
stranded somewhere.
ing the contract for public parking
at the Shell station across
from Duniway Park, preserving
views from Terwilliger
which are being lost to growing
trees and replacing light bulbs
to make Terwilliger Parkway
safer. Responding to questions,
Davis reported on the replacement
communications tower
on Council Crest. She said it
was likely roads and trails will
be closed off and on during
construction. We requested the
parks bureau consider including
a public restroom as part
of the accommodations for the
new tower. She said she would
investigate our concerns and report
back to us.
2. Shriners Hospital Construction
Update: Gayle Littlejohn,
interim administrator
and head of nursing and Keith
Rogers, facilities director, reported
on the status of the project.
Groundbreaking will be in
September 2008. The project
will take about 28 months to
complete. Questions included
adding neighborhood enhancements
such as a turnout for the
Shriners bus stop to improve
traffic flow and sidewalks. Littlejohn
said the hospital planners
had raised the bus stop issue
with the city. [Shriners has
finished its construction management
plan and building plan. We
are inviting them to present these
at our November meeting.]
October meeting has been cancelled.
include pedestrian improvements
on Marquam Hill Road.
Anton Vetterlein reported the
meter revenue allocation process
had stalled but he hopes it can
get back on track to fund pedestrian
improvements as planned.
The speed bumps, signage, and
other Traffic Calming Project
components are now underway.
4. Land Use: Land Use Committee
representative Anton
Vetterlein reported that the
279-unit condominium project
on Sam Jackson Park Road
(opposed by the association)
appears to be on hold. The developer
canceled the latest requested
city review.
5. OHSU: Jack Dempsey,
OHSU liaison, reported he
hopes to schedule a breakfast
meeting with OHSU president
Joe Robertson in November. He
will check into questions raised
about the Trail 24 contract, RAZ
buses idling and the university’s
protocol regarding patients from
the psychiatric ward who may be
in the neighborhood.
Do join us on October 2.
South Waterfront Greenway
and Neighborhood Park
by Elizabeth Kennedy-Wong, Community Engagement and Public
Involvement Manager, Portland Parks
The South Waterfront Neighborhood
Park and the Central
District section of the South
Waterfront Greenway are the
first of several parks and open
spaces to be designed and constructed
in Portland’s new and
burgeoning South Waterfront
District. The city’s South Waterfront
Plan (2002) envisioned
District parks working together
to enliven the neighborhood,
stimulate development activity
in the area, and to provide for
the needs of area residents. The
Greenway Development Plan,
accepted by council in 2004, provided
a vision and concept plan
for the entire South Waterfront
Greenway balancing the needs
of the public and the health of
the Willamette River. We will
finalize design for the first phase
of the greenway this Fall. The
neighborhood park design phase
will be launched simultaneously.
As the first parks in the South
Waterfront, innovative design
of the neighborhood park and
greenway will set the tone for
the quality of open spaces in
the district. Residents will have
opportunities to be involved in
processes for both sites starting
this fall. Newsletters and a
website will provide project design,
schedule and event updates
for the projects, including open
house announcements. Portland
Parks looks forward to working
with you to design these two
new park spaces!
How can I get involved?
We are currently accepting
names of persons who are interested
in serving on either project
advisory committee. We will
also be conducting open houses
for these projects as well as distributing
a survey for the neighborhood
park.
All information will be available
on the project websites:
www.portlandparks.org (click on
the project tab).
serving on a project advisory
committee, email Elizabeth.
