About <strong>Lander</strong>HISTORY<strong>Lander</strong> <strong>University</strong> was founded by Methodist clergymanSamuel <strong>Lander</strong> in 1872 as Williamston Female College in Williamston,S.C. It remained a private institution for 26 years. In1898, <strong>the</strong> College gained support of <strong>the</strong> South Carolina Conferenceof <strong>the</strong> Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1904, <strong>the</strong>College was relocated to Greenwood, S.C., and was renamed<strong>Lander</strong> College in honor of its founder.In 1948, when <strong>the</strong> Methodist Conference, pursuant to a policyof consolidation in its education efforts, decided to end supportof <strong>Lander</strong> College, interested citizens of Greenwood formed The<strong>Lander</strong> Foundation as a nonprofit corporation and leased <strong>the</strong>College <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church.In 1951, <strong>the</strong> county of Greenwood obtained <strong>the</strong> College nameand property <strong>from</strong><strong>the</strong> MethodistConference. TheSouth CarolinaGeneral Assemblycreated <strong>the</strong> GreenwoodCountyEducation Commission,knownas The <strong>Lander</strong>Foundation, toserve as <strong>the</strong> boardof control for <strong>the</strong>College. <strong>Lander</strong>thus became <strong>the</strong>only four-year liberalarts college in<strong>the</strong> United Statesto be controlledand financed bya county government.On July 1, 1973, <strong>Lander</strong> College came under <strong>the</strong> control of <strong>the</strong>Board of Trustees of <strong>the</strong> State Colleges of South Carolina, making<strong>Lander</strong> a state-supported college. The State College Board ofTrustees governed <strong>Lander</strong>, <strong>the</strong> College of Charleston and FrancisMarion College. Effective July 1, 1988, governance of <strong>Lander</strong>was vested in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lander</strong> College Board of Trustees.On July 1, 1992, by action of <strong>the</strong> Board of Trustees, <strong>the</strong> institutionbecame <strong>Lander</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<strong>Lander</strong> was founded as a college for women. Men were admittedin 1943, and <strong>the</strong> institution is now completely coeducational.<strong>Lander</strong> <strong>University</strong> subscribes to a policy of equal educationaland employment opportunity for all.Mission StatementGrounded in <strong>the</strong> belief that education is a liberating forcewhich makes it possible for an individual to live a life ofmeaningful activity, of personal satisfaction, and of service too<strong>the</strong>rs as a neighbor and a citizen, <strong>Lander</strong> <strong>University</strong> has chosenteaching and learning as its principal concerns and providinga challenging education for qualified students as its mission.Through its liberal arts programs and its professional schools forbusiness, education and nursing, <strong>the</strong> university offers an undergraduatecurriculum that combines a broad liberal education withspecialized study leading ei<strong>the</strong>r to immediate application in acareer or to more advanced study. The undergraduate programsprovide opportunities for students to achieve competence in amajor discipline and to explore a broad core curriculum designedto assist <strong>the</strong>m in developing <strong>the</strong> ability (1) to ga<strong>the</strong>r and criticallyanalyze information <strong>from</strong> a variety of fields and to use thatinformation as a basis for reasoned judgments and for effectiveproblem solving, (2) to syn<strong>the</strong>size diverse ideas and information,and (3) to understand and convey ideas clearly. In addition to itsundergraduate programs, <strong>Lander</strong> provides a limited number ofmaster’s programsand post-graduatecourses thatrespond to criticalneeds of <strong>the</strong>immediate regionand <strong>the</strong> state. Supporting<strong>the</strong> university’srole as ateaching institutionand recognizingthat scholarshipis essentialto establishingand maintainingexcellence of instruction,<strong>Lander</strong>faculty engagein scholarly andcreative activitiesappropriateto <strong>the</strong>ir teachingfields. In addition,<strong>the</strong> faculty and staff recognize <strong>Lander</strong>’s responsibility to <strong>the</strong>public and to <strong>the</strong> local economy; <strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>the</strong> university servesas an intellectual and cultural center and cooperates with variousagencies, schools and businesses.STUDENT ACTIVITIES<strong>Lander</strong> <strong>University</strong> has over 60 organizations and clubs, eachoffering students different opportunities. The choices, challengesand opportunities students face by participating in <strong>the</strong>se organizationswill assist <strong>the</strong>m in classes and will allow <strong>the</strong>m to meet newfriends and socialize with old friends. There are many differentareas to choose <strong>from</strong>, such as academic organizations, clubsand interest groups, media organizations, club sports, honorarysocieties, religious organizations, and Greek fraternities andsororities.
