Coach Doug SpearsLander AthleticsHall ofFame softballcoach DougSpears is returningto Landerand will serveas the school'sinterim softballcoach forDoug Spearsthe 2011-2012 Head Coachseason.Spears, who was inducted intothe Hall of Fame earlier this summer, posted a record of 803-474 in24 years as Lander's softball coach. He retired Dec. 31, 2005, and movedback home to northeast Texas."We are fortunate that CoachSpears has agreed to return to LadyBearcat softball as our interim headcoach," Lander Athletics DirectorJeff May said. "He brings a wealthof experience and past success tothe program. Later this fall, we willconduct a national search to hire anew head coach who will lead LadyBearcat softball in 2012-2013."Spears won two NAIA District 6titles and Palmetto State Conferencetitles in 1990 and 1991. Seven ofhis teams finished ranked in the Top20 when Lander was a member ofNAIA.Spears was the 1990 NAIA EastRegion Coach of the Year, the NAIADistrict 6 Coach of the Year in 1982,'85, '86, '87 and '90 and PalmettoState Conference Coach of the Yearin 1990. He was also the Peach BeltAthletic Conference Coach of theYear in 1994.He coached All-Americans KimHarper (NAIA 1985, '86, '87),Kristi Weed (NAIA 1990, 1991), AnnHarbin (NAIA 1992), Kristi Johnson(NCAA 1994), Brantley Mack(NCAA 1996, '97) and Ashley Tomlinson(2001). Spears also coached 23All-Peach Belt Conference playersand 56 All-NAIA District 6 players.Coach Doug SpearsImproved offense key to succesful yearDoug Spears is coming out of retirement tto coach one more year of fLander softballand has only one request of his players before he rides off into the sunset one moretime.“All I have asked of them (the players) from day one is for them at the end of theyear to be able to look in the mirror and say, ‘that was the best that I could do for myteammates and the program,’” Spears said of the 2012 season.“We will let the wins and losses take care of themselves. I am not going to worryabout that. We are going to play to the best of our ability and we will be scrappy. Nobodywill work harder than us. But we are going to have fun.”Just over six months ago, Spears was inducted into the Lander Athletics Hall of Fameafter posting a record of 803-474 in 24 years as the school’s softball coach. He retiredDec. 31, 2005, and moved back home to northeast Texas. But when Coach Brandon Duncan left Lander for an assistant coaching position atSamford University, the Lady Bearcats needed a head coach quickly and Spears acceptedthe invitation. He will coach this spring on an interim basis, and the school willhire a permanent coach for 2013 and beyond.“This time, it’s almost like closure. And I am going to enjoy it,” Spears said.A 5-2 loss to North Florida in the 2005 season finale was thought to be Spears’ lastgame. But he will be back in the dugout when the Lady Bearcats open their season Feb.5 versus Anderson University on a new field appropriately named Doug Spears Field.Located in the Jeff May Athletics Complex, the new Spears Field is state-of-the-art.Lander’s old field had been named for Spears a couple years ago.Spears is also bringing back pitching coach Dee Garner, who was with him in thesame capacity for several years.“I would not have wanted to come back without him,” Spears said.Spears will take over a team which finished 21-22 last year, including 6-14 in theultra-competitive Peach Belt Conference.Lander returns two All Peach Belt players in senior pitcher Hayley Leissner of Jefferson,Ga., (14-16, 2.32 ERA, school record 226 strikeouts) and junior second basemanBrittney Sheriff of Belton, S.C., who led the team in batting average (.413), runs (35),hits (59), triples (5) and stolen bases (20-for-20).“One of the reasons that I am here is to help them build for the future,” Spears said.“We only have one senior (Leissner) and she obviously will be a big loss. But whoevercomes in will have time to recruit another pitcher and get this program into the top halfof the Peach Belt.”Leissner’s 226 strikeouts came in 187 innings pitched. She lost six games by one run.She was first in the Peach Belt in innings pitched, games started (29), and appearances(34); second in strikeouts; and fifth in wins.“It’s nice to come back into the program and have a three-time All-ConferenceLander third baseman Blair Hammonds makes the tag on a North Georgia player.

Shewants to have a good senior year.”Also returning are three more juniors (in addition to Sheriff) ininfielder Casey Corbitt (West Columbia, S.C.), pitcher AmandaHamby (Belton, S.C.), and outfielder Alyssa Hartley (IndianLand, S.C.).Also returning are eight sophomores including outfieldersJaime Presnell (Campobello, S.C.) and Arielle Buchholz(Naples, Fla.), first basemen Taylor Donson (Sarasota, Fla.) andKegan Leissner (Jefferson, Ga.), pitcher Mary Katherine Pegram(Fuquay-Varina, N.C.), third baseman Chasity Davis (Duncan,S.C.), catcher Sarah Fuller (Elberton, Ga.), and pitcher/utilityplayer Kelsey Davis (Starr, S.C.).Incoming freshmen are pitcher/first baseman Tyler Riendeau(Tampa, Fla.), catcher Amanda Mendolia (Sarasota, Fla.), thirdbaseman/utility player Heather Yoder (Clemson, S.C.) andcatcher/utility player Melanie Davis (Zebulon, N.C.).Lander has two other pitchers with experience aside fromLeissner, and two new pitchers. Hamby went 3-2 with a 3.76ERA last spring, striking out 17 in 35 innings. Pegram was 4-4with a 4.58 ERA with 59.2 strikeouts in 49 innings.Kelsey Davis is a transfer from Anderson, and the 6-foot-3Riendeau enters her first year of college softball.“She (Davis) has done a nice for us in practice and we havea sophomore (Pegram) and a junior (Hamby) who have experience,”Spears said. “I expect all of those to have a chance to pitchsome. Our freshman, Tyler, is working real hard.”Lander has lost one catcher – Mendolia - due to an arm injury. But she can pinch hit, Spears said. The other two catchers MelanieDavis and Fuller will both see playing time as they are replacingformer starter Rachelle Adkins.“I think both of them will split time at the beginning of theseason and we’ll see how that works out,” Spears said.Donson, Kelsey Davis and Kegan Leissner are the first basemen, with Riendeau also in the hunt for playing time. Donson ledthe Lady Bearcats in RBI last spring with 23.Doug Spears Field“The other positions are pretty set,” Spears said.Lander is especially set at second base which is handled bySheriff, whose batting average soared 118 points last year afterhitting .295 as a freshman.“She is one of the best hitters that I have ever seen,” Spearssaid of his projected leadoff hitter.Sheriff did not make the preseason All-PBC team, however, because the spot was taken by consensus first-team All-AmericanApril Jowers of Armstrong Atlantic, who hit .497 last spring.Corbitt starts at shortstop with the other of the team’s threeDavises, Chasity Davis, playing third. Yoder can back up eithersecond, short or third.Corbitt and Chasity Davis are middle-of-the-order hitters alongwith Donson and starting left fielder Hartley, who was second onthe team with a .329 batting average last year with 15 RBI.The speedy Presnell (.308, 20 runs) starts in center field withBuchholz in right. The designated hitter position can be filled by several players,or a pitcher might even bat for herself, Spears said.Scoring enough runs will be a key to Lander’s season.“The defense is very solid and that includes the pitchers. Theoffense is the question mark,” Spears said. “Seeing their recordsthe last few years, there have been a lot of one-run games. So,yes, if we can average an extra run per game, we could do well.”Spears had the entire fall to get acquainted with his final team.“I felt like we had a great fall. They came a really long wayfrom day one (of fall practice), especially the hitting. We haveto improve offensively and I feel like they did through the fall. Icouldn’t ask for a better group of girls.“It’s been fun. And the real fun begins soon. We haven’t seenmuch live pitching outside of our practices. But other than that,we are there (ready).”The Peach Belt is widely considered one of the best Division IIleagues in the country, led by perennial powerhouse North GeorgiaCollege & State University which has made three consecutiveNCAA Division II College World Series appearances.North Georgia, which returns National Pitcher of the Year JessicaCoan, is picked to win the league again in 2012 according tothe PBC coaches poll. Armstrong Atlantic State is picked secondafter qualifying for the NCAA Tournament five of the last six seasons, followed by Flagler, Augusta State, Columbus State, USCAiken, Francis Marion, Georgia College, UNC Pembroke, Lander(10th) and Georgia Southwestern. The non-conference schedule includes Anderson, Limestone,Catawba, Carson-Newman, Le Moyne, Newberry, Brevard, NorthGreenville, Young Harris, West Liberty, Coker, Lenoir-Rhyne,and St. Andrews.“The schedule is very good. We have some very good opponents. We are in a very good tournament in Alabama with sometop 10 teams in the nation there,” Spears said.Lander will face Barry, Florida Tech, Indianapolis, Ohio Dominican,Southern Indiana and Missouri-St. Louis in the Universityof Alabama-Huntsville Ringor Charger Chillout in Decatur,Ala., Feb. 17-19.
