PIR OCCUPANCY SWITCHESPIR occupancy switchesThe DANLERS range of passive infra-red occupancy switches is designed for theautomatic control of lighting, heating, ventilation or air conditioning loads. The PIR switch will switch on the connected load automatically when an area is occupied, and then switch it off automatically when the area has been vacant for a chosen duration. This has the benefits of reduced energy bills and automatic control. When being used tocontrol lighting, the built-in photocell can be used to keep the lights off on bright days.PIR occupancy switches are ideal for:• Offices• Factories• Warehouses• Schools• Leisure centres• Hospitals• Canteens• Staff rooms• Corridors and stairwells• Residential homes• Military accommodation• Student accommodation• Toilet blocks• Changing rooms• Plus many other usesPIR occupancy switch variantsSpecial variants of products are available on request such as 24V (a.c. or d.c.) versionsof our PIR occupancy switches and photocell switches, ideal for low voltage controlsystems. 12V variants can also be supplied. Some variants are available from stock fornext day delivery. To special order we can also supply volt free outputs for mains, 24V or12V supplies (including versions with gold relays).6

PIR OCCUPANCY SWITCHESPIR occupancy switch functionsEach PIR occupancy switch in the DANLERS range has a passive infra-red quad persondetector (except COPD and BMPIR which have a passive infra-red dual person detector). This detects the movement of a warm body moving within its detection zone. When sucha movement is detected the load is switched on. There is a time lag function which isadjusted using a spindle on the side of the product. The time lag is the time that mustelapse with no movement detected before the PIR occupancy switch will switch off.Simple adjustment spindlesThere is a built-in, adjustable, photocell override which can be used to keep lights offwhen there is sufficient daylight available. The photocell can only be used in this way ifthe amount of natural daylight exceeds the level of the artificial lights. The photocell canbe set to inactive when controlling heating, ventilation or air conditioning. The photocell isalso adjusted by a spindle on the side of the product. Each PIR occupancy switch contains a relay suitable for switching any type of load, including fluorescent lights and fans.A few PIR occupancy switches may be wired in parallel to control the same load. However, there are minimum load restrictions with the WAPIR model only (see page 21).The PIR occupancy switches require a mains supply.Function demonstrated with the lighting in an officePIR occupancy switch brings lights on – only when neededEnough daylight, Occupied –Lighting OFFEnough daylight, Unoccupied –Lighting OFFNight, Occupied –Lighting ONNight, Unoccupied –Lighting OFF7

PIR OCCUPANCY SWITCHESPIR occupancy switch specificationsPIR detectorPassive infra-red quad person detector.Adjustable time lagTime lag adjustable in 9 steps (approximate values):10 seconds 20 seconds 40 seconds1.25 minutes 2.5 minutes 5 minutes10 minutes 20 minutes 40 minutesAdjustable photocell"Inhibit on" photocell. The photocell will inhibit the lights from switching on whensomebody enters an area with plenty of ambient light. However, if somebody is alreadyoccupying an area with the lights switched on, the lights will remain on while the areais occupied, regardless of any increase in the ambient light level. This is to avoid anynuisance switching off when somebody is in the middle of a task or meeting.Range 100-1000 lux (and photocell inactive), falling on the working plane.LoadingAll models can switch up to 6 amps (1500W at 230VAC) of resistive, transformer orfluorescent lighting loads, 2 amps (500W) of low energy lighting loads (LED lamps andcompact fluorescent) or up to 1 amp (250W) of fans or most metal halide lamps. For theWAPIR model there are some minimum load requirements (details on page 21).Wiring in parallelA few PIR switches can be wired in parallel to control the same load.Start-up ModeWhen the mains supply is initially connected to the PIR occupancy switch it goes throughits Start-up Mode. This means it switches on for about 1 minute, then switches off andenters its Operating Mode. If a manual wall switch is feeding the PIR occupancy switch(see wiring diagrams on appropriate product pages) then it will go through the Start-upMode each time the wall switch is switched on (not applicable to WAPIR, see page 21).By wiring the manual wall switch in the alternative position, the supply to the PIRoccupancy switch is uninterrupted and it remains in Operating Mode. It does not gothrough its Start-up Mode each time the wall switch is switched on.8

PIR OCCUPANCY SWITCHESThe WAPIR model replaces an existing wall switch – no neutral wire is needed. It fits into aplaster depth (16mm) wall box. The WAPIR model also has a manual override off switch onthe front of the plate.Wall mounted PIR occupancy switchOrder code:WAPIRApplicationsThe WAPIR requires a permanent live supply and should only be used in applicationswhere the lights would not be on for more than 12 hours per day. This is to allow itsrechargeable battery enough time to recharge itself from the mains supply. The WAPIR issupplied with a load capacitor to augment small loads. The WAPIR is suitable for small offices, meeting rooms, tutoring rooms, etc.The override off button (out position) enables the lights to be held off during videopresentations, etc. A version without the manual override button is also available onrequest (order code WAPIRX).For wall mounting only.SpecificationDetection angle: 120°Time lag range:Photocell range:Maximum load:Minimum load:Wiring diagram:Dimensions:10 seconds to 40 minutes in 9 steps100 to 1000 lux, and inactiveUp to 6 amps (1500W) of resistive, transformer or fluorescent lightingloads, 2 amps (500W) of low energy lighting loads (LED lamps andcompact fluorescent) or up to 1 amp (250W) of fans or most metalhalide lamps40W resistive or approximately 100W inductive per WAPIR in thecircuit.A load capacitor (CAPLOAD) is supplied to augment small loads.See diagram 21a and 21b below86 x 86 x 22mm. The wire-free senders are availableas hand held or wall mounted versions.A receiver switch or receiver dimmer is wired into the existing circuit to control the connected load. The sender signals canpass through walls or ceilings so the receivers can be mounted out of sight. Inside a typical building the receivers can work atan approximate range of 30-50 metres. In free air the range is approximately 100-150 metres. The carrier frequency of the radiosignals is 868MHz, which is CE Approved and Licence Free.AN EXAMPLE BUILDINGRadio receiversExterior receiver switchfor outside lights.Radio remote control senders and receiversDisplay cabinet lamps orstandard desk lamps canbe controlled via a plug-indimmer receiver.Receiver switches andreceiver dimmers for thelighting circuits canbe concealed behind afalse ceiling.Wire-free radio senders12 channel hand sender to controlceiling lights, spot lights and screen. For security reasons a caretaker canuse another 12 channel hand sender tocontrol all the lights inside the buildingand the outside security lights. All lights can also becontrolled by wire-freewall mounted senders.54

RADIO REMOTE CONTROLSRadio remote control functionsEach button on each sender sends a unique coded signal (one of 4 billion codes).A simple set-up procedure enables any chosen receiver to respond to the signal from anychosen sender button. The sender button then controls the receiver (and its connectedload). This simple procedure is repeated, creating links between various sender buttonsand various receivers. As shown, almost any control set-up is possible; from a single room to an entire building. For the simplestset-up, onereceiver can becontrolled by onesender.ReceiverSenderAny receiver canbe programmed torespond to the uniquecoded signal fromany sender button.Hence, a senderbutton can control anynumber of receiverssimultaneously. Also a single receiver can be controlled by up to 15sender buttons. These control combinations can be mixed and matched, makingit possible to have almost any control set-up desired; from thesimplest single room to an entire building. In the above control set-up, one button on the left hand sendercontrols the first receiver. A different button on the left handsender controls the first and second receivers simultaneously, and so on.Typical penetration of radio signalsThe radio signals cannot pass throughthe entire length of walls. The radio signals achieve a range ofapproximately 30-50m inside a building;100-150m in free air.Brick walls:approx. 60-90%penetrationTimberframeworkwith sandwichplasterboards:approx. 80-95%penetrationReinforcedconcrete:approx. 20-60%penetrationMetal walls:approx. 0-10%penetrationConventionalglass: approx.70-90%Insulating glass(with vaporisedmetal coat):approx. 30-60%penetrationPlastics:approx. 80-95%penetration55
