anxious people 㠀 in an anxious world? Or how do we become

First, Many words of gratitude to all those who helped make
the Bill Selby “Healthy Congregations” Workshop successful,
especially Bev and the United Methodist Women who took
care of our basic human needs.
Bill Selby has come, led a highly rated workshop and left us
to continue the work. The work is ‘how to be a congregation
that functions in a healthy manner.’
Research has shown that when there is a non-anxious person
within a group, the entire system is positively affected. Sound
easy? We know it is not. We are continually barraged with
the world’s anxiety. Just watch the news for a while and see if
your blood pressure doesn’t go up. How do we become non-
aware of our own anxiety in order to be non-anxious?
One way is to have solid spiritual practices: prayer, reading
scripture, silence, journaling, worship. Another is by delving
into our own family system (not genealogy) but family of
origin system to help us gain insight into our own reactivity.
On Sunday, April 10, at St. James UMC I will be facilitating a
2 ½ hour workshop on family systems based on Ron Richardson’s
“Family Ties that Bind”. 2-4:30 PM. This is a ‘next
step’ because how can we expect to have a non-anxious and
healthy church, if we are unaware of our own reactivity to
anxiety?
You need not have attended the Selby event to participate. No
$, just presence and a willingness to go deeper into our own
lives.

Supervisors Appointed for our Cell Groups
Gail Bachinski and Alice Mildenberger have been appointed
as Cell Group Facilitator Supervisors. They are
responsible for mentoring 3-5 Facilitators and assisting
them to mentor their Facilitator Interns. They were recognized
during worship at Calvary on March 6. Our
great thanks to both Gail and Alice for stepping into
this very important next step for the growth of our discipleship
process.
Food�et Coordinator �eeded
Food Net serves 100-120 families every week. This
amounts to about 350 persons. Over 30 persons from
all three of our congregations work together to gather
food from grocery stores and restaurants. Aldine Jackson
from our Calvary congregation has coordinated this
work for over four years and is stepping down into a
supportive role in June. We need someone to step into
this important supervisory responsibility. You will
know that you are making a significant difference in
the lives of several hundred people every week. Please

�atural Church Development Survey Results
In the Natural Church Development process there are 8
characteristics of quality congregations. Last month we
surveyed 30 persons from our 3 congregations about
their impressions on how we are doing with these 8
characteristics. The results are in. The process now is
to use our strengths to build up those characteristics
that are weaker.
Our strengths are Empowering Leadership,
Loving Relationships, Gift-based Ministry, Effective
Structures and Holistic Small Groups. We will use these
strengths in a planning process to build up our
Passionate Spirituality, Inspiring Worship Services and
Need-oriented Evangelism.
You are already providing valuable input regarding
worship. And we are working on ways to deepen
our relationship with Christ in our lives and to create
ministries that meet the real needs of people in our
neighborhoods .
�ew Visions Website is Developing
The website for Our New Visions Community
is slowly taking shape. The most helpful tab at this
time is the calendar. Clicking on the Calendar Tab will
bring up an interactive calendar that lists everything
going on in all three of our buildings. (continued in

a small window will open giving you detailed
information about that event or activity. This includes
a map which will show you exactly where
that event is happening.
Susan Ledder, in the Calvary office, is
keeping it continually up to date. So going to our
website is the best way to keep up on what is happening.
When you have ideas to make the website
more useful for you, please, pass that information
on to Pastor Bill. And our thanks go to Richard
Mildenberger who is the guy behind the scene
bringing it about.
Ways to Deepen Your Spiritual Life
We offer many ways for you to deepen your relationship
with Christ. Pastor Judy is coordinating an
on-line daily Lenten reflection (email her at: judithanndye@yahoo.com).
Our Cell Groups are
wonderful ways to assist you in discerning the next
step in your life journey. You will know that you
have people praying for you and your family every
day. The groups are always confidential.
A simple way to deepen your spiritual life is
through the Upper Room Daily Devotional. You
can pick up a copy at the back of the sanctuary at
Calvary and Southminster. They are in the upstairs
Fellowship Hall at St. James. Or you can read it online.

You will find there also a link for a devotional
based on the “Imagine No Malaria” Theme. )
Church Softball League Forming
City Parks & Recreation is again offering a Church
Softball League. There will be both a Youth Division
and an Adult Division. The adult league will
have a Spring/Summer League starting April 18.
There will also be a Fall League offered. The
Youth Division may include youth (boys and girls)
who will complete the 6th—12th grade this school
year. The youth season will run from June 2
through July 21. If you are interested, visit with
Pastor Bill who has all of the pertinent information.

Pastor Bill works Monday-Thursday, Saturday
morning and Sunday morning He is the staff liaison
to the Common Table, our New Visions missions/
community ministries teams and the administrative
teams in all three congregations; leader for the development
of our disciple making process and lead facilitator
for our cell groups; he is the primary visitation
pastor and is available for personal counseling. Unless
a family requests one or the other, Bill and Judy
will alternate doing weddings and funerals.

Financial �ews:
Thank you to each of you who are helping to keep
our finances straight. For those of you who compare
these things, we are better off than a year ago
but, we are continuing to borrow to cover our actual
expenses. One of our core values is to have
ministries that are sustainable. This is not sustainable.
Pastor Bill has asked each of the congregation’s
chairs to invite the entire congregation to
their next church meeting at which he will make a
proposal to begin dealing with this dilemma. Calvary’s
will be on Monday, April 11 at 7 pm; St.
James is Thursday, April 14 at 7 pm and Southminster
is Thursday, May 5 at 7 pm.
How have we been able to manage up to
now? Calvary is borrowing from rapidly decreasing
reserves. St. James is borrowing from almost
depleted reserves and selling pies like crazy.
Southminster is paying bills late. Please come to
the meeting of your interest and help us turn this
around.

UMCOR: O�E GREAT HOUR OF SHARI�G, APRIL 3
When Juma Gul and his family returned to Afghanistan
after years in exile in Pakistan, he found his home had
been destroyed along with local water sources for agriculture
and livestock.
Thanks to an UMCOR program, Gul was able to
repair his home, and the underground irrigation system
that watered his land was restored. “I am proud to be an
Afghan living in my own country, in my own house, and
cultivating my own land,” he says.
Your participation in One Great Hour of Sharing
on April 3 ensures the success of projects like this one
and offers hope and healing to the world’s most vulnerable
people.
Gifts to this offering underwrite UMCOR’s cost
of doing business so that 100 percent of every other gift
you make to a specific UMCOR project will be spent
entirely on that project and not on home-office costs.

Dear Friends,
I join you in lifting up the people of Japan in
prayer during this time of crisis. We grieve with them
and stand with them in solidarity. Once again, I am
struck by the extravagant generosity of United Methodists
who are supporting UMCOR’s efforts to bring healing
and hope to Japan. I want to share with you how we
are responding on your behalf to the great needs.
On Friday, March 11, the General Board of
Global Ministries reached out to missionaries and partners
in Japan to confirm their safety and ask how we can
help. The Wesley Center, affiliated with United Methodist
Women, is offering shelter to those who are displaced.
UMCOR set up an Advance account for the Pacific
Emergency. Once we understood better what the
scope of the disaster was, we changed the name to
“Japan Emergency” and updated the description:
“UMCOR is working through relief and church
partners in Japan to respond and provide immediate assistance
and long-term rehabilitation. With these partners,
UMCOR is meeting the most basic humanitarian
needs in northern Japan such as providing clean drinking
water, food, cooking and eating supplies, clothing, and
fuel for heating.”

We are honoring the request of the Japanese
government who has asked that outside groups not
come to Japan. UMCOR staff generally does not go
into disaster areas as first responders and we are working
through trusted partners who have existing networks
on the ground in the affected areas. We have
sent an emergency grant to church partner, United
Church of Christ in Japan. They are using the funds to
distribute food, clean water, clothing and heating fuel.
Local churches are being used as distribution sites to
provide basic necessities to survivors. UMCOR also
sent an emergency grant to GlobalMedic, a trusted
partner and first responder, to provide relief to affected
survivors in the form of medical care, and access
to clean drinking water, supplies, and food.
We anticipate working with our partners to
direct your gifts to earthquake and tsunami survivors
in Japan as needs and plans for response are identified.
All grant requests go through a rigorous approval
process and require a reporting of how the funds are
used. It is important to us that we are good stewards of
your gifts. We are always accountable for how
UMCOR funds are used.
UMCOR is committed to standing with the
people of Japan into the recovery phase. We will continue
working through our church and relief partners
to provide shelter, food, and clean water to survivors
of this crisis. Please continue to hold the people of Japan
in your prayers. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring
of love into the world by our United
Methodist Church.

the site and we’ll play 2 games. We’ll call on our way

April 24: OFF for Easter Sunday.
April 30, Saturday: South Gate’s Spring Fair. Brad
& Lori will be helping out with the kids’ area, painting

The Rev. Meri Whitaker is Director of Cookson Hills
Center, a mission project to the Cherokee Indians in
Cookson Hills, Oklahoma.

There will be a salad lunch (each car takes a salad. We
will be taking items for the Cookson Hills Center Pacn-Snack
program with us. Items needed are: peanut
butter crackers snacks, cheese crackers snacks, granola
bars, Little Debbie’s snack items, dried fruit, jerky,
snack pack of cereals, peanuts, cheese nips, nonperishable
lunchables, easy-open soups and meals,
string cheese, chicken-in-a-pouch, juice boxes. If you
would like to donates some of these items, please leave
them in one of the church offices.
Missions and Community Ministry Team Forming
We are forming a Missions and Community Ministry
Team which will coordinate all of our mission and
community ministry work for all three congregations.
If you want to help our congregations make a real difference,
please, give Pastor Bill a call. All three congregations
do a lot of things and we need to keep
things coordinated.

Reel Recovery, April 10
Our New Visions Community has begun to partner
with the Nebraska Recovery Network in sponsoring a
monthly movie night with a recovery emphasis. The
next video night will be Sunday, April 10 from 5-8
pm in the Calvary Fellowship Hall. The film will be
the story of Bill Wilson who believes God revealed to
him the concept of “staying sober by talking to drunks
about getting sober”. Last month we saw the film of
how his wife survived as he learned the process. The
world-wide AA; Al-Anon and NA movements today
are the direct result.
This is a simple way to meet some people who
are learning how to be free from the trap of addiction.
Both you and they will benefit from the process. Paige
& Ron Namuth and Kevin Fox are Lincoln people involved
in the early years of AA in Lincoln. They are
related to the Calvary congregation.
VOICES U�ITED
have been working very hard preparing for each Sunday
during Lent, plus the upcoming Holy Week services,
and the grand finale-Easter. Each Wednesday
Calvary practices at 7pm, after rehearsals for the
Voices United. Bring a carry-in dish to share for our
Light Supper Fellowship time at 5:30pm, and join us
for an evening of fun, fellowship & song.

Food �et �ews
Thanks to all of you for your contributions on Souper Bowl Sunday. 103 cans of soup were donated and 11
various other cans, bringing this year’s total to 114. Thanks to Sue Stroud and the Middle Micah Group for
setting up the opportunity for souper bowl giving. The FoodNet clients were told of your gifts. Special
treat bags were made up for the children for Valentine’s Day. A warm thanks to Southminster for the
gloves they sent along for the children. Also, we welcome some new volunteers. Shirley H. a new driver on
Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Michael W. and Dan N., two volunteers from our Thursday night FoodNet
clients to help with unloading when the truck arrives.
FoodNet volunteers are busy people when they are not working for FoodNet. Mike recently was
awarded another recognition for his part in saving the life of a man about a year ago. James sings in his
church choir, Ashley and Derek presented talks about FoodNet at their respective universities in North Carolina
and Kearney; Sara will begin her post-graduate internship in Omaha in July; Lois devotes many hours
with her pup, “Daisy” to children in the public schools. Ashley received the first gold medal ever earned by
a woman at the University of North Carolina in her running event.
On a weekly basis, volunteers are giving over 80 hours of time to FoodNet. Multiply that number by
24 and you will have an idea of the amount of volunteer hours given for all FoodNets across the city. There
is at least one FoodNet in operation every day of the week with more than one on many days
I could use a driver to pick up on Monday mornings between 10 and 11 at two downtown businesses. Bill
Thomas and Kevin Huff have been helping temporarily. (Aldine Jackson 402-423-0172)
In June of 2011 the New Visions Community will be looking for a new FoodNet Co-ordinator. Add this to
your prayer list. It could be you.

WORSHIP CHOIR— THANK YOU to all who assisted
with the Spring TAIZE Service. The set-up & tear-down
crew, the instrumentalists, Rachel as our Cantor, Mike for
running the Slides and Sound, and Sue Stroud for filling-in
at the piano while Jennifer was out of town. Third time is
the charm…this service went very smoothly, with only a
few “bumps” to rework for the Summer TAIZE Service.

SUNDAY SCHOOL / YOUNG VOICES MUSIC:
The CalvaryBeam, Cont’d
During Lent at Sunday School (9:30-9:50am) we have
been learning the music for Palm Sunday. Young
Voices will be singing with the Worship Choir members
and the Psalm 146:2 Psingers for our traditional
Palm Sunday Entrance of the Palms, and the possible
spreading of cloaks for the arrival of Jesus.
On April 17th at 9:00 a.m. we will meet in Fellowship
Hall (basement level) to practice the music and
walking with palms/cloaks. We sing at the END of the
8:30 am Service, then again at the BEGINNING of the
10:30 am Service at Calvary. Hope to keep seeing you
during Sunday School time to continue practicing your
song.

Calvary Greets Two �ew Members
On March 6, at the late service, Wendy Garrison was
welcomed as a Member at Calvary and an Associate of
the other two congregations, and Randee Hansen as an
Affiliate of all three. Fellowship Friends were Alice
Mildenberger and Sheryl Springer respectively.
BI�GO! was held on Saturday, March 12. Oscar
Blomstedt gave grace before we ate. We had a large
group and a good variety of food! Elsie Saltzman and
Raylene Curnes had an “N” on two different cards at
the same time. Jackie Johnson also got blackout at the
end of Bingo! An Easter towel went to Debbie Solano
and Jackie Johnson as the door prizes. Our next Bingo
will be on April 16 at noon.
BOOKMARKS met at the home of Avis Runyan on
March 18. Those present were: Avis, Aldine Jackson,
Dot Yanak, Lois Schwab, Kathy Hunter, Elizabeth
Campbell. The work discussed was : “The Shadow of
the Wind” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Next will be “The
White Queen” by Philippa Gregory on April 15 also at
Avis Runyan’s home. On May 20 “The Tortilla Curtain”
by Boyle Coraghassan will be reviewed at Dot
Yanak’s home.

Easter Lilies
The order form for Easter Lilies will be in the
bulletins until April 17, which is the deadline. They
are from SuperSaver and will cost $8.00 per lily For
details on the options, see your bulletin inserts or contact
Lori Dierking or Kathy Sobotka.
Southminster Hosts UMW on April 9
On the second Saturday in April United Methodist
Women will be meeting at 1:30 pm. The Program
will be: “Community Gardens”.
Also on April 9: Church Clean-up
We will be cleaning up the grounds around
Southminster on this date at 9:00 a.m. If the
weather will not co-operate then this clean-up
will take place on April 16 at the same time.

Southminster will hold their next
Administrative Team Meeting on Thursday,
May 5 at 7:00 p.m. The Administrative
Team invites all members and friends

Easter Egg Hunt
On Saturday, April 23 at 11:00 a.m. Southminster
will hold its popular Easter Egg
Hunt. Children one year old thru 5th grade
are invited. Don’t be late because it will all
be gone by 11:05! If questions, ask Lori
Dierking. (The Hunt will take place indoors
if the weather is not fine, otherwise it
will be outdoors. Bring your friends…)
Program Planning �eeds Your Help
Last year we had about 100 kids for the
Easter Egg Hunt. We need candy to stuff
the eggs- (each has to be individually
wrapped) - prizes for children, 3 years—5th
grade and prizes for one– and two-year
olds. (Stuffed animals, plastic books, etc.
Please check to be sure it is age appropriate).
You can bring to church any Sunday
through April 17. Any questions, contact Lori
Dierking or any Program Planning Member.
Combined Birthday Bash a Smash Hit
On March 27th, twelve round tables, each bedecked
with a monthly theme, raised cries of
admiration as congregants from that Sunday’s
service sat down to eat in Southminster’s basement.
Prizes were handed out to children on a
random birthday basis. The cakes at the centers
of each table were all of different flavors,
except for two cheesecakes and those were differently
embellished. Photos of the event may
appear in the near future.

Dorothy Applebee’s Concert
On March 15, approximately 43 people attended the
Dorothy Applebee piano event. This was a celebration
of Women’s History Month. Dorothy entertained
us with her knowledge of the history of many
“old” songs and played them while we all sang
along using the song sheets she had given us. Many
of us stayed to enjoy a wonderful lunch with the
Senior Center as well as getting
a chance to visit with
Dorothy.
