But for many families, the power of memory is notenough. They need more—they need our understanding, ourrespect, and our help. During the concert you’ll hear MYCsingers talk about what it is like for some families to be withoutthis power—without a home—and what IHN does forthose families in greatest need.Weaving together all of this—the music, the words, the stories—isa song by Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s JosephShambalala. GATHERING ROSES IN WINTER:MEMORY, HOPE, AND HOMESunday, January 20, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.CANTABILE AND RAGAZZIMichael Ross, conductorWanting Memories Ysaye M. Barnwell (b. 1946)We open our concert with this beautiful song about the importance of memory andthe lessons those memories can teach us. This song, first sung by the a cappella groupSweet Honey in the Rock, has been recorded and performed countless times.PURCELLMargaret Jenks, conductorDavid Anderson, pianoWho Can SailTraditionalArranged by Jeanne Julseth-HeinrichThe first verse of this Norwegian folk song poses some seemingly impossible challenges:Who can sail without wind? Who can row without oars? Who can leave a friendwithout tears? The second verse provides some answers. The boys discussed ways that it would besomehow possible, as the song claims, to sail without wind or row without oars. Asone Purcell member wisely observed, “The first two questions are problems to besolved and we can figure out a different way to complete the task. The third questionisn’t really a problem. Who would want to leave a friend without feeling somesadness?”As we reflected on friendships separated by time and distance, the boys shared awealth of memories of humor, joy and pain.

Express TrainAlasdair NicolsonThe Robert Louis Stevenson poem “From a Railway Carriage” is the text for thisselection that captures the excitement of an accelerating locomotive. The gallopingrhythms and expansive vocal range portray the sensation of a high-speed trip throughtowns and countryside. Every Purcell boy could remember some time that they spentlooking out the window of a fast moving car or train, wondering about the glimpses ofstories they saw on their journey. We explored the question, how is “Express Train” ametaphor for our life memories?“Big long stories become little pictures in my head over time.”“Things that seem long—like they will never end—almost seem like they took just asecond when you look back on them.”“We have grown up so fast, even though when I was five, it seemed like I would befive forever!”“Being on a train gives you one perspective on a lot of different stories. It’s kind of likewe are all on our own train rides and each have a slightly different pictures of whathappened.”BRITTENRandal Swiggum, conductorDavid Anderson, pianoLittle MoragSally BeamishThis text is adapted from an old Gaelic poem translated by Alexander Carmichael forhis 1900 collection Carmina Gadelica (Gaelic Songs). Its pentatonic, folk-like melodyhas a sense of pity and pathos and, underscored with a restless accompaniment, bothcreate a sense of urgency. We knew very little about the history of this text, which caused us to speculate on thequestions the song raises. One clue: “Morag” was a secret code name among thedefenders of Bonny Prince Charlie of Scotland during the Jacobite wars. Is the poemto be read metaphorically then? One of the features of good art is its ability to posequestions and make us ponder, rather than merely providing information.

Winter’s Night (Vinternatt)Frode FjellheimAndrew Telsmann, saxophoneThis jazz-inflected piece comes from the set Norwegian Sámi Songs, all based on orinspired by the traditional Sámi “yoik.” Yoik is a very old vocal tradition among theSámi people of Scandinavia. Typical of this tradition is the use of short melodicphrases that repeat endlessly with small variations. The Sámis themselves say that theYoik has no beginning or end. It often describes a specific person, emotion, or elementof nature with very few words. This piece describes the stillness and darkness of anorthern winter. Two Britten SongsThe Bonnie Earl of MorayTraditional Scottish TuneArranged by Benjamin BrittenBritten’s fondness for folk melodies resulted in his setting of dozens of them in artsong arrangements with imaginative piano accompaniments. For this one, a lamenton the death of the Earl of Moray, he created a funeral march with bagpipe effects. The story that inspired the song is a true one. On February 7, 1592, during the reign ofJames VI of Scotland, the Earl of Huntly was given a commission from the king to huntdown his rival James Stewart, the Earl of Moray. He tracked him down to his house inFife, but Moray would not surrender. The house was set on fire and entire householdmurdered, but Moray escaped, only to be pursued, captured, and killed by Huntlyhimself. The popular Moray’s untimely death was much lamented in painting, poem, and song. The Morays were hereditary keepers of the Castle Doune.Begone, Dull Care! Benjamin Britten (1917-1976)Britten’s collection of songs for boys, Friday Afternoons, was written between 1933-35for his brother Robert who directed the boychoir at Clive House School, Prestatyn, which rehearsed on Fridays. This sassy trifle of piece—less than a minute long—bothacknowledges the mind’s power to worry and fret, and then thumbs its nose at it.

HOLSTRandal Swiggum, conductorFreedom is ComingSouth African Freedom SongMany vigorous freedom songs are associated with the apartheid era in South Africaand “Freedom is Coming”is still one of the most famous.Should Fancy Cease Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987)from Three Canons for Voices, op. 31We have talked about the many ways that our mind can sustain us—especiallythrough difficult times. Persichetti sets the Sanskrit line, “Should fancy cease, theworld would be a desert, dead and dry”with hollow, open harmonies and moments ofvery little rhythmic motion to depict how barren the world would be without thepower of imagination.Miri it is(sung in Middle English)Anonymous, 13 th centuryMerry it is while summer lasts, with bird’s song. But now draws near winter’s blast and harsh weather.Ah! How long this night is!And I, most unjustly, must sorrow and mourn and fast.Being one of only a handful of pieces which have survived from the 13 th century, thissong is justly famous, and typical of medieval pieces which complain about winterweather. The original manuscript—now in the Oxford library—is only a single melodyline. Our “arrangement” includes some vocal drones and the Holst members singingin both their treble and bass ranges.El Grillo(The Cricket) Josquin Des Prez (1440-1521)(sung in Italian)The cricket is a good singer, who can hold a long note.Go ahead, drink and sing, cricket,But don’t be like the other birds who, after they’ve sung a little bit, take off for somewhere else. The cricket always stands firm. When it is hottest, he sings only for love.

Josquin’s most famous frottola (a precursor to the madrigal) is a charming example ofmusical puns: the long bass note on “hold a long note,” and the alternating high andlow voices, the large leaps, and the fast patter, all of which imitate the squeaking of thecricket. “Per amore” (for love) receives a flourish of vocal melisma. Even withoutunderstanding this saucy Italian text, the sheer sound of the vocal texture delights theear.MADISON BOYCHOIRPalomita(sung in Spanish)Akornefa Akyea, fluteTraditional Lament from PeruArranged by Randal SwiggumLittle dove, where are you? Because I am looking for you.Lonely, perhaps you cry, without a way to come back.My dove, I’ve lost you. I don’t know where you went.Desolate, I search for you, perhaps never to find you.A poignant melody which captures the melancholy and desolation of the text, Palomitahas been a favorite of the boychoir since we started learning it at Fall Camp. The flutepart is reminiscent of a lonely Andean panpipe player.Johnnie CopeKen JohnstonThe subject of this text is Sir John Cope (d. 1760), commander in chief of the Englisharmy defeated by Bonnie Prince Charlie of Scotland at the Battle of Prestonpans, 22September 1745. According to legend, Cope secretly deserted his troops the nightbefore the battle and has been “skeired”(mocked) in this famous poem ever since. Thepoem, well-known by Scottish schoolchildren, was composed by a literate farmer,Adam Skirving, whose fields were trampled in the battle. The martial music, with itsfanfares and marching beat, was composed by Scottish composer Ken Johnston for theNational Youth Choir of Scotland in 2001. Learning to sing the piece in Scots was awelcome challenge for the boychoir. “Hey, Johnnie, are ye waukin’ yet?” means “Areyou awake yet?”

RAGAZZIMichael Ross, conductorApril Kang, pianoWhither Must I Wander Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)Drawn from the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson, this movement from VaughanWilliams beloved Songs of Travel paints a picture of memory and wistful regret. Thegorgeous, soaring melody is supported by an accompaniment that varies just enoughwith each successive verse, adding a musical background of simplicity and beauty.Song of Peace Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987)American composer Vincent Persichetti’s work spans many musical mediums: hewrote works for piano, instrumental solos, symphonies for orchestra, and major worksfor concert band. Here, he weaves a simple melody throughout, treating it as the literalsense of peace.Seigneur, je vous en prie Francis Poulenc (1899-1963)(sung in French)Lord, I beseech you, may the sweet and burning strength of your love absorb my soul andremove it from everything terrestrial, so that I might die from the love of your love, since youdeigned to die because of the love of my love. (St. Francis of Assisi)This piece, from a set of four short gems set to short prayers of St. Francis of Assisi, paints a picture of devotion. The unexpected harmonic turns at the conclusion areespecially effective.Chickens in the GardenTraditional British Folk SongArranged by Stephen HatfieldThis humorous song comes from the tradition of the broadside ballad. At the start ofthe 19 th century in England, the mechanization of the printing industry led to anincrease in cheaply printed “street literature” (a precursor of today’s tabloids). Mostwere only one sheet of paper, meant to be read and posted in public places. First usedfor royal proclamations, acts, and notices, they later became used in popular culture forpolitical songs and speeches, or as here, just for entertainment.

CANTABILEMichael Ross, conductorApril Kang, pianoUtopiaMoira SmileyIn the United States in the 19th century, singing schools, led by itinerant musicinstructors, concentrated on improving congregational singing. Instead of concentratingon European composers, these amateur musicians learned the music of earlyAmerican composers like Williams Billings, who used English parish church modelscombined with free counterpoint and loose harmonic rules. In the Southern United States, Sacred Harp (the title of a collection of these songs)singing found a permanent cultural home. Singers learned to read music by using afour-note system of shapes. This shape-note tradition continues today, with shapenotesinging groups still active throughout the country (including Madison!) andenjoyed a rediscovery as part of the Cold Mountain soundtrack. Utopia, is a newer composition(1994), written in the shape-note style by Moira Smiley, a member of theVermont ensemble Village Harmony.from Dreizehn Kanons (op. 113 Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)7. Wenn die Klänge nah’n12. Ich weiß nicht7. When the tones come near and then flee, in waves of sweet desire, ah, how often yearns theheart for deeper melodies!12. I know not why the dove coos in the grove. Does she lament, like my soul, waiting for thefriend who has strayed away from her? These two rounds are a testament to the compositional skills of Johannes Brahms. Each is a simple melody, reflecting the text expressively, and fitting together into awonderful three or four-part round.Five Hebrew Love Songs Eric Whitacre (b. 1970)Beth Larson, violinCaitlin Mead, Andrea Shaw, sopranos; Lauren Schell, mezzo-sopranoI. TemunáA picture is engraved in my heart;Moving between light and darkness:A sort of silence envelopes your body,And your hair falls upon your face just so.

II. Kalá kalláLight brideShe is all mine,And lightlyShe will kiss me!III. LárovMostly”, said the roof to the sky,“the distance between you and I is endlessness; But a while ago two came up here,And only one centimeter was left between us.IV. Éyze shéleg! What snow!Like little dreamsFalling from the sky.V. RakútHe was full of tenderness; She was very hard. And as much as she tried to stay thus,Simply, and with no good reason,He took her into himself,And set her downIn the softest, softest place.Eric Whitacre is one of the most widely performed choral composers of his generation. The piece was written in 1996 for his girlfriend (now his wife, who wrote the poems)and his friend, violinist Friedemann Eichorn. Whitacre notes: “Each of the songscaptures a moment that Hila and I shared together…these songs are profoundly personalfor me, born entirely out of my new love for this soprano, poet, and now mybeautiful wife, Hila Plitmann.”No TimeTraditional Camp Meeting SongsArranged by Susan BrumfieldAn important influence on the development of gospel hymns was the camp meetingsong. These were (musically) simple songs associated with the camp meetings, whichtook place on the frontiers of Kentucky and the Carolinas in the early and middle1800’s. An outgrowth of 19th century American Revivalism, these outdoor gatheringsdrew people from a radius of a hundred miles (or more) to a camp area, usually in the

wilderness, where people of both sexes and all races mixed and sang and socializedand worshiped together. The words speak of an acceptance of death and a concern for those left behind—andalso, more generally, dealing with change (eg. graduation!).I Got Rhythm George Gershwin (1898-1937)Arranged by Ward SwingleOne of the most famous songs written by George and Ira Gershwin, I Got Rhythm is asimple melody that has become a permanent part of our popular culture. We presentit here in an arrangement by the great vocal jazz arranger and group leader WardSwingle.CANTABILE AND RAGAZZIMichael Ross, conductorO Magnum Mysterium Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611)(sung in Latin)O great mystery and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lordlying in their manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the LordJesus Christ. Alleluia!Countless composers have set this nativity text to music, but Victoria’s setting is one ofthe most stunning and well-known. The simplicity of the opening motive (short fragmentof the melody) represents the amazing wonder in the text. The second section(“O beata”) is incredibly humble and serene, echoing the sentiment of the text. Thefinal “alleluia section”moves from triple meter to a final explosion of celebration beforecoming to its final resting place. In the Bleak Midwinter Gustav Holst (1874-1934)British composer Gustav Holst’s setting of this beautiful Christina Rossetti poem hasbecome a beloved carol.

Apple-Tree WassailTraditional British CarolArranged by Stephen HatfieldWassail comes from the Anglo-Saxon wes hael—to be healthy. Originally, wassailswere taken seriously as blessings on farms and farmers that would help ensure thehealth of the coming year. The Apple-Tree Wassail comes from the cider country ofDevon and Somerset, where it might be sung in the orchards or at the farmer’s door. The references to “lily white pins” and “lily white smocks” are meant to flatter thefarmer’s family by listing the fine clothes and ornaments they could supposedly affordto wear. (Notes by the arranger)That Lonesome RoadEntsmingerSoloists: Kristen Lucas, Aman AlemJames Taylor and Don GrolnickArranged by Deen E.Recorded by James Taylor as an a cappella end to his 1981 album Dad Loves His Work, this is a simple declaration of memory and regret.COMBINED CHOIRSThula Klizeo Joseph Shabalala (b. 1941)(sung in Zulu)Be still my heart, even here I am at home. This song was written by Joseph Shabalala, leader of the South African groupLadysmith Black Mambazo. He wrote this song during a visit to New York, when hemissed his family (and 14 children!) and was unsure if he would be able to see themagain because of the Apartheid laws of the time. He was calmed by the text, whichbecame the lyrics to this simple but powerful song.Although memories of family, of music, of home, can provide hope in the midst ofhorrible times, memories alone are not enough. There are people in our world, ournation, our city that do not have a home; they don’t have the basic things we can easilytake for granted. As we close today’s concert we hope you’ll join us in helping thosefor whom memories are not enough. Volunteer, donate, help out, bring items to oursupply drive, do what you can.
