They slow rainwaterrun-off, absorb nutrientsand break down pollutants.Plants in the water reduce thewave impact on the shore,and therefore reduce erosion.And, native plants are beautiful.They can enhance yourview of the lake by addinginterest, texture and color.Adding a buffer, as narrowas 10 feet wide (from thewater’s edge), will help. Currentrecommendations are fora minimum of 25 to 35 feet ofnative plants in a buffer zone.When it comes to shorelinebuffers, wider is better.If you look to see whatkinds of plants grow naturallyin the parts of the shorethat have not been cleared,you will have an idea of thekinds of plants to include inyour buffer strip.Or, on shorelines wherelawn meets the water, a goodstep is to simply stop mowinga buffer. You are likelyto be delighted by the plantswaiting for the opportunity togrow. State forest lands arecurrently classified as managed,which means trails areopen to motorized use unlessposted closed. The proposalwould classify the majorityof state forest lands in CrowWing County as limited,which means the land wouldbe closed to motor vehicleuse unless posted open.About 15% of the state forestlands would be classified asclosed under the proposal,which means off-highwayvehicle (OHV) use would notbe allowed.Plants, written by Dr. MaryBlickenderfer-University ofMinnesota Extension, containsdetailed informationon aquatic invasive species,a glossary of basic botanicalterms and clear images ofplants. The route designationswill determine whereall-terrain vehicles (ATVs),off-highway motorcycles(OHMs), off-road vehicles(ORVs) such as 4x4 trucks,and highway-licensed vehicles(HLVs) may operate.The proposal would designate25 miles as minimummaintenance state forestroads that will be opento HLVs, ATVs, OHMs andORVs. An additional 20 milesof existing routes would bedesignated as trails for ATVand OHM use.
