Finding the God Who Seeks YouJourneying with St. Vincent Pallotti, The Prophet of CommunionReflection: Grace Fr. Vensus George, SAC, a Pallottine from the Assumptionof the Blessed Virgin Mary Province in India, has written a book ofreflections based on the thoughts of St. Vincent Pallotti. We would like toshare some of them with you to help you on your spiritual journey.Among the things that enrich aperson, the most significant isstudy. It implies not only formallearning, but also learning fromvarious life-experiences, and acquiringthe practical wisdom thatguides one to live a good, honorableand other-centered life. Onebegins such an endeavor from hiscradle and continues until he goesto the grave. St. Vincent Pallotticonsidered study as somethingvery important in the life of aperson. He himself had alwaysbeen a learner. He lived to learnthe process of learning to live everysituation God has placed himin. Besides being a learner in thegeneral sense, he was also a greatacademician. He had obtained hisDoctorates in both Philosophy andTheology. He served as a professorat the Sapienza University. Thatwhich motivated him constantlyto be a learner and an academicianwas the goals of the glory of God,the advantage of the people whomhe served, and correspondence tothe grace of God. St. Vincent neverlooked upon study as somethingthat brought him personal prestigeand honour. He wanted to enrichhimself with what he studied andTrue Purposes of Studylearned, and then use his learningto serve others, thereby glorifyingGod, the author of his life. Similarly, learning helped St. Vincentto know God and love God more,in the process helping him to correspondto the grace of God in thebest way possible.Questions for Further Reflection1) Do I recognize the importanceand value of study in mylife?2) Do I take the time to enrichmyself by my learning?3) Do I consider my academicachievements as a matter ofpersonal prestige?4) Do I study to bring glory toGod and happiness to others.5) Does my learning help me toknow and love God and correspondto His grace? How does a man become wise? The first step is to trust and reverencethe Lord! (Prov. 1:5-9)3

To the Center of It All - RomePallottine Novices Come and SeeNews from Steve WeberIn a final phase of our formation year, the Pallottine novices from Ireland,Germany/Austria, the United States and Argentina have gathered in Rometo learn more about our founder, St. Vincent Pallotti, and the Pallottine lifestyleand prayer life. Some of the highlights of our stay thus far includeour participation in a retreat led by our Grotta Ferrata Novice mistress andthe Pallottine Sisters from Kerala, a visit to the Home St. Vincent startedfor Girls victimized by the Cholera epidemic of the 1800’s, and a tour ofPallottine novices and directors gather for a keepsake picture in Rome.Steve Weber is third from left in back row.St. Mary Major Basilica and the Basilica of St. Praxedes. I personally hadthe opportunity to visit the Pallottine Sisters at St. Michael the ArchangelParish in Aprilia near Castel Gandolfo, the summer residence of the Pope. While we were at Grotta Ferrata, Fr. Jacob, our Rector General, stopped infor a visit with us after his meeting with the UAC General Council. Thereis so much going on here for all of us to take in. The experience of noviceand older Pallottines from different parts of the world living and learningtogether in the city where Pallotti started it all is one that will grow with usall the days of our lives. Now I just have to keep working on my Italian!4

A Look at the World:Ministry to Ministers-A Sabbatical Experienceby Fr. Bruce Schute, SACIt was mid-January 2011 when I startedout on my journey to San Antonio, Texasto be in a program called “Ministry toMinisters.” It was billed as a Sabbaticalprogram for anyone in church ministry.Ten sisters and ten priests signed up.A fairly significant snow storm delayedmy plane from Milwaukee to Chicago.Arriving in Chicago late meant I had tospend all afternoon and early evening inO’Hare Airport, finally getting into SanAntonio about 1:00 a.m. the next day.I had inquired a bit about the programfrom the priest in Milwaukee directingon-going education and also from a formerparticipant, both of whom recommendedthe program as interesting andpersonally helpful. My own experiencewas one of “what’s next and where do Igo for that meeting or group activity?”Yes, there was a variety of subjects thatwere presented, such as, topics in MoralTheology, the Multi-cultural Church, Exploringthe Sacred Universe, Introductionto Wellness and Exercise, Spiritualityof the Body, Friendship and Intimacy. However, the over-riding theme wasa sense of “the Sabbath.” Here Sabbathtook on a special meaning beyond justthe notion of the Sunday “Day of Worship.”We were given a book on themeaning of Sabbath and a few of thespeakers dealt with the idea directly. Thebiblical Sabbath that was commanded bythe Lord was stated as “Remember tokeep holy the Lord’s Day (Sabbath).Ideas that were part of this commandinclude: Settle weekly disagreements,Speak praise to our God, and Tuneinto a rhythm of work and rest. In thebiblical book of Leviticus there is anadaptation of several verses pertainingto the Sabbath that are helpful:The Sabbath is a time of REST foryou, a time of RESTORATION foryour spirit, and a time to RELEASEthe chains that bind you within andwithout. The time of Sabbath is a timeto REJOICE in the covenant I havemade with you. It is a time of GOODNEWS for all within you that is impoverished, stripped down, jailed-upor sick. It is a time to be RECON-CILED with you, with me, and witheach other. These ideas gave me much to thinkabout while in Texas and now that Iam back home in Milwaukee. At theclose of the program I chose a simplesong to express my feelings andthoughts: “Till the end of my days,O Lord, I will bless your name, singyour praise, give you thanks, all of mydays.” In a future article I will speakabout the call of discipleship. 5

Zambia:Our MissionIn Progressby Fr. Leon Martin, SACIn my mind, it goes without sayingthat the many happy faces andhealthy bodies at our Pallottine missionin Zambia are a direct result ofthe continuing support of our friendsand benefactors in the United Statesand around the world. So much has been accomplished ina short period of time because youprovided us with the means to purchaseland, food, school supplies, medical help and a shelter (nowbeing planned) for so many of thepeople that come to us in their need.As HIV continues to ravage manyfamilies and orphan so many children,we have been able to care forthem with food baskets and medicines.Fr. Leon (Middle) visits PallottineMarion Shrine at Mandevu Zambiawith Fr. Sejoy and Fr. Shaji.Due to the poverty of so manyfamilies in Zambia, many childrenare able to continue their educationbecause your support makes it possiblefor us to provide the necessarymoney to cover their $200 tuitionand school fees. With each passingyear one of our goals is to see an everincreasing number of these childrenattending school because educationand the learning of marketable skillsis often the only way out of povertyfor them.Adults and childrenhelp to package purchasedand donatedfood into baskets to bedistributed to needyfamilies that sufferfrom unemploymentand illness. With ourhelp many people aregiven a renewed senseof hope in a world ofpoverty and want.6

With your help we havebeen able to provideseveral clean, comfortableand simple housesthat we have rented at amodest prices to someof the local people in thearea. This undertakinghas provided safer andbetter living conditionsfor the renters and atthe same time has generatedsome additionalincome to help the poor, sick and hungry peoplethat come to our mission. We already haveon the drawing boardplans to provide severalmore of these homes atthe cost of $7,500 each. This is one undertakingthat has helped raise localmoney for the mission. Our Pallottine parish,Holy Family Parish, prospers as membersdo more than passivelysit at a Mass by activelyparticipating in theparish’s daily life. Thepeople are proud of themany choirs they haveformed to enhance thebeauty of the liturgicalcelebrations. Theirvoices rival many of thechoirs I have heard athome and in my travels. The parishioners havetaken upon themselvesat their expense to re-One of several choirs at Holy Family Parish. Thepurple shirts identify their particular singing group.Parish catechists instruct those wanting tolearn more about Jesus and the church.place the metal folding benches in the churchwith new locally make wooden pews. Manyothers have volunteered their time and talentsto teach catechism to those wishing to join theCatholic Church or to increase their understandingof the bible and the message of Christ. Again, your support has contributed greatly to the successof all these things at our Pallottine mission.Thank you! With your help we were able to send funds topurchase a 20 acre farm, which is now the house(Continued on pg. 14)7

And Now You Know!Excerpts from the book: Like An Evangelical Trumpet: A History of the Motherof God Province of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate, written by Steven M.Avella.Question 25: Pius High School: The Archdiocesan Hand-Off: (part one)Pius XI High School continued to grow during the late 1950’s and early1960’s. The expansion of the mid-1950’s and the apparent regularization ofthe Pallottine presence at the high school had worked out. However, the bondsthat attached the high school to the parish were now strained to the maximum.Simply put, the people of St. Anthony parish wanted a new church and becameless patient with the continual subsidization of the prosperous high school.Front view of Pius XI High School from the 1950’s and 60’s.Archbishop Meyer had departed for Chicago in late 1958 and his successor,Chicago born William E. Cousins, arrived in January 1959. Gregariousand eloquent, Cousins was also as fiscally prudent as his predecessor, and from his years in Chicago had seen the difficulties engendered bya heavy archdiocesan subsidy of high schools. As we have seen beforewith other groups, the Pallottine Fathers would give him his share of anxiousmoments, but the details of that imbroglio were nothing comparedto the headaches surrounding Pius XI High School, St. Anthony Churchand St. Therese parish. At the center of it all was the lovable but independentFr. Joseph DeMaria, now entering the last years of his long career.8

Cousins did not have to wait long toengage the Pallottines on the subject offinances. Despite the assurances given toMeyer in the 1950’a, DeMaria still continuedto pour St. Anthony parish funds(including those designated for a longdesirednew church) into an ongoing subsidyfor Pius XI High School. One couldnot totally blame the priest for wanting topreserve the school he had literally builtand seen expand. Moreover, he had kepttuition low, and the neighboring pastorswho sent their young people to the thrivinghigh school did not contribute anywherenear the sums necessary to keep the Fr. Joseph DeMaria, SACoperation afloat. Though St. Anthony parishionersgrumbled, they went along, largely because of their deep loveand respect for “Father Joe.” Nonetheless, by early 1960, Pius XI HighSchool was deeply in debt: as much as two million dollars. Cousins hadcertainly been briefed on the unusual financial arrangements at St. Anthony/Piusby his chancellor, Monsignor Leo Brust, and Superintendentof Schools, Monsignor Edmund Goebel. As with most information anyonepicked up from DeMaria, a rumor began to circulate that DeMariawas going to use an archdiocesan approved tuition rate hike for Pius XIto replace revenues in the depleted St. Anthony church building fund. While this easy shifting of funds did not trouble DeMaria in the slightest,it alarmed Cousins who wrote LaJoie (Pallottine Provincial at the time)in mid-May, 1960 expressing his displeasure over the matter --if indeed itwere true. He concluded dryly, “I am writing to you in the belief that youas his superior might have more influence upon his action than has beentrue of Chancery Office directives in the past.”LaJoie wrote back to Cousins to remind him that plans to build a newchurch at. St. Anthony’s had been on the docket since Schroeder’s day. Moreover, “the decision to build Pius XI High School, instead of a church, was made by Archbishop Kiley, Father DeMaria and Sister Loyola [the(Continued on pg. 15)Next Time: Pius High School: The Archdiocesan Handoff: (part two)Learn more about the Pallottines of the Mother of God Province. Ask FatherIs Frequent CommunionA Good Thing?Dear Father,I’m attending a Catholic college andin my Church History class we werelearning that in the Middle Ages mostpeople DIDN’T go to communionvery often. How come we are encouragedtoday to go every time we go to aMass? What changed?Signed,Studying HardDear Studying Hard,What changed is our attitude towardthe eucharist over the ages. Our practicetoday and the practice often foundin the Middle Ages both have theirmerits and pitfalls (if one should saysuch a thing about the Eucharist).By the Middle Ages great emphasiswas being placed on the idea of sin somuch so that people often felt totallyunworthy of having Christ in theirbodies through the Eucharist. Theylooked upon themselves as great sinnersand so the practice evolved thatpeople went maybe once or twice ayear and even at that they were uncomfortablewith receiving our Lord.By the time Pope Pius the X (1903-1914) Church thinking on the subjectbegan to change. Pius X said that “theshortest and safest way to heaven”was the frequent reception of the HolyEucharist. And so he encouraged bothadults and children (who reached the12age of understanding what theEucharist was) to go to communionoften and not stay away frombringing Christ into their lives. So which attitude is right or better? There is something to be saidfor those who want to show a deeprespect for the Eucharist and don’twant to receive it in a state of sin. They are humble before the Eucharist. That’s admirable, but thentake it a step further and go to confessionso that you can go and receiveChrist who wants to be withus in our daily lives. For those who side with frequentcommunion the question can beput forth: “Because you go so often,do you realized what you’redoing? It “going” so common thatyou just do it out of habit or peerpressure? How important is theEucharist then for you?I encourage you to receive communionoften, but do so with agood understanding of what youare doing and why. Thanks foryour question.

And Now You Know (continued from pg. 8)high school principal and local superior] without consulting the PallottineFathers as such.” Nonetheless, LaJoie assured Archbishop Cousins that theparish had subsidized the high school over the years to the tune of $900,000,and noted that $75,000 was needed annually from the parish building fundto help the institution remain solvent. He clarified the matter of the useof the tuition rise by conveying to the archbishop DeMaria’s hope that theincrease would lessen dependency on the “building fund” and allow him toaccumulate enough money to finally build the long-promised church.”Anxious to do something about the spiraling debt of the high school,Cousins called a meeting of local pastors in order to help lift the burden ofdebt from the high school. In wending his way through the financial maze,Cousins discovered that DeMaria had covered the debts by borrowing fromlocal banks without proper corporate authorization. The absence of formalpermission or a proxy to borrow caused DeMaria to skate dangerouslyclose to outright violations of the law. For this, LaJoie suggested in a letterto Moehler (Rector General of the Pallottines in Rome), DeMaria “couldeven be sent to jail according to U.S.A. corporation laws.” The financialcrisis was somehow averted, but it became clear to Cousins that the timehad arrived to definitively deal with the complicated tangle of the parishand the high school and firmly fix the boundaries between the two. This, ofcourse, meant not only better defined jurisdictional lines, but ultimately theremoval of the one man who embodied the problem: Fr.
