<strong>SYLLABUS</strong> <strong>FOR</strong> <strong>SEMBA'S</strong> <strong>BEEKEEPING</strong> <strong>COURSE</strong> <strong>FOR</strong> BEGINNERSGeneral Overview <strong>of</strong> Course:This course is designed for beginners to learn about the biology <strong>of</strong> the honey bee, the honey bee hive,tools needed to work with honey bees, feeding honey bees, seasonal management, honey extraction, andhoney bee disease identification. Students will be given several sessions <strong>of</strong> basic beginning beekeepinginstruction including lecture and hands-on field experience. Students who place a hive, or anything else,on or at Tollgate must timely remove same from Tollgate; anything not timely removed will beauctioned at or after the last session with all <strong>of</strong> the proceeds going towards costs, expenses and M.S.U.Instructors:Sessions held: 1:00 p.m., Sundays, except as notedMike Siarkowski (Leader)Apiary Site: Tollgate Education Center, M.S.U.(517) 545-0824 28115 Meadowbrook RoadClay E. Mendel (734) 660-8621Winn Harless (734) 453-2914Tuition (all in U.S. funds):Tuition for the entire course (which doesn’t include SEMBA's Annual Beekeepers' Conference) iseither:$140 per student, payable in advance, if you provide your own new hive and new bees(However, family members may share their hive with each other); or$190 per student, payable in advance, if you don’t provide your own new hive and new bees.SEMBA WILL NOT PROVIDE A NEW HIVE OR NEW BEES. Instead, the student mayobserve, from a distance, hives <strong>of</strong> students who did provide a hive for their own use.[Per session charge for each non-student is $20 per session; but only with: (a) prior approval from theInstructors and (b) payment in advance.]Tuition for the entire course includes a paperback copy <strong>of</strong> the text entitled "Beekeeping 101 –Handbook and guide for beginning beekeepers" by Dana T. Stahlman, an electronic copy <strong>of</strong> Startingand Keeping Bees in Michigan, and a one-year SEMBA membership (either first year or renewal), butdoes NOT include any bees, equipment, supplies, etc. [Tuition also does NOT include thefollowing items required for the course: New hive wood ware, new package <strong>of</strong> bees with newqueen (both from an approved source), protective clothing, hive tool, and smoker.]Requirements:Complete, and submit, the Application for SEMBA’s Beekeeping Course for Beginners and pay tuition.Registration will continue until course is filled. Please note the course size is limited and preference foradmission is granted to SEMBA members.Attend all <strong>of</strong> the below Sessions. Attendance at each session is important, since it is difficult toduplicate hive conditions for non-attendees and classes <strong>of</strong>ten build upon prior classes. Students will participate in hands-on training. Accordingly, ALL STUDENTS MUST BRINGCLEAN AND UNCONTAMINATED:Protective clothing:Bee suit with attaching veil and helmet or hood,Bee gloves, andWork boots or shoes with protective ankle wraps;Hive tool;Smoker;New woodware equipment; andNew package <strong>of</strong> bees with a new queen (both from an approved source).To help reduce the risk <strong>of</strong> introducing pests, students electing to temporarily have a hive at Tollgate willneed to provide all new hive equipment and a new package <strong>of</strong> bees with a new queen (both from anapproved source). New hive equipment includes all new woodware that includes at least one new outercover, one new inner cover, at least six (6) new hive bodies, at least sixty (60) new frames with newfoundation (added just prior to use), one new bottom board, one new entrance reducer, and one new hivesupport.Anyone re-installing a queen and/or any other bee(s) must acquire each from an approved source. Onesuch source may include SEMBA’S Advance Beekeeping Course at Tollgate; if available, a queenwithin a cage (which cage is to be promptly returned) and a drawn out frame <strong>of</strong> brood may be purchasedfor $30 (plus one new, unused replacement frame and foundation). Please note that this alternativesource is not your only approved source and is only being <strong>of</strong>fered as a possible convenience.All participants must properly maintain all items left at Tollgate and conduct themselves in a friendlyand helpful manner, following all rules.INTRODUCTION TO <strong>BEEKEEPING</strong> <strong>SYLLABUS</strong>OVERVIEWSESSION 1, MARCH 3 (All sessions begin at 1:00 p.m., except as noted, at Tollgate Education Center,M.S.U., 28115 Meadowbrook Road, Novi, MI 48377-3128)(Before the session, read text pages: 21-31)• Introduction to Tollgate and discuss rules. Tollgate Farm Manager)• Discuss safety issues and EpiPens.• Introduction to SEMBA Beekeeping Course.• Overview <strong>of</strong> Getting Started in Beekeeping.• Basic Beekeeping Equipment Requirements.• Discuss what you know about bees.• Discuss the marvelous honey bee.• Suggested continued education -- SEMBA's Annual Beekeepers' Conference, at the Vis Ta TechCenter <strong>of</strong> Schoolcraft College, 18600 Haggerty Rd., Livonia, on March 16, 2013, beginning at 9:00 a.m.• TO DO: Distribute written textbook for the course.<strong>Page</strong> 2 <strong>of</strong> 5
