A hundred plus hours of classroom teaching is required in order to write theexam at the end of the theory component. The theory exam is scheduled for three hours.Progress tests are given throughout the course, counting as 10% of the final mark.After successful completion of the theory, there will be a 500 hour practicum. In order to takethe Certification exam, each student must complete the 500 hours of practicum experience in allareas of Central Service. This is set up at various Central Service Departments within the Capitalregion. The students are evaluated during the experience.CertificationCMDRT (Certified Medical Device Reprocessing Technician)Once the Theory and Practicum portions are successfully completed, the students areresponsible to schedule and write the CMDRT Exam at their own cost. Once certified, thestudent is responsible to maintain their certification.A <strong>NorQuest</strong> Certificate of Completion will be sent by the Office of the Registrar after successfullycompleting the program which includes both the theory and practicum. Adetailed scheduled will be provided on the first day of class.WhenThe MDRT class runs for 5 consecutive weeks, Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm. Thereis a one week break between the class and the start of the practicum.The MDRT practicum runs for approximately 5 months or 500 hours.Pre-Requisites1) Proof of Grade 12 Canadian education or GED2) English Language Proficiency (for ESL students)a. CLB with a score of 7 and no skills below 7b. CELBAN overall score of 8, with listening band no lower than 83) An interview with the program representative (call 780-644-6480)4) Ability to lift 35 lbs5) Ability to push or pull 100 lbs6) Clear Criminal Records check. Must include vulnerable sector check*7) Up to date immunization record (including Hepatitis B)**These are at your own expense. They must be current within six months and must be completedbefore the start of the practicum. If you cannot provide proof of clearance or currentimmunization record you, will not eligible to register for the practicum. Please note, this processcan take 2-4 weeks to complete. It is highly recommended that you have these completed beforethe start of Part 1 – Theory.Please note that there is a minimum number of registrants required to run this program. You willbe given a one week notice if the program is cancelled.Course Criteria Must attend all classroom sessions. Must prepare for the course by reading the workbook. Approximately 30-40 hours ofhome study are required. A mark of 70% must be achieved on the exam. If the exam is not completed successfully,students can re-write the exam at a cost of 50% of the course fee. If the exam is notcompleted successfully a second time, further course attempts require re-registrationand payment of the course and fees. No registration refunds or substitutions for registered students will be permitted afterthe start date.Page 3

The fieldwork/practicum provides NON-PAID experience working in a clinicalenvironment.Practicum shifts are pre-arranged and must be fulfilled. Request for changes will not behonored.Please be advised that this practicum is a major commitment. It should be viewed as afull time unpaid job.You have one full year from the last date of the theory class to complete your 500 hours.If you do not finish within the year, you must re-take the theory class again.The Roles & Responsibilities of a Medical Device Reprocessing TechnicianProvide information about the availability of instruments and supplies.Prepare instrument sets for surgical procedures and case cards for booked andemergency surgery.Operate and maintain cleaning, sanitizing and sterilization equipment.Sort, disassemble, clean and disinfect trays, instruments, carts , supplies and equipment.Select and use appropriate cleaning methods.Ensure use of effective and safe sterilization procedures.Inventory, select and replenish supplies to <strong>medical</strong>/surgical carts on a regular basis, andmonitor quota levels and changes in demand levels.Utilize technology to order supplies, and process and maintain records.What can I expect when I am a MDRT?Work in busy healthcare environments which typically operate 24 hours a day.Technicians work shifts that may include nights, weekends and holidays.Follow safety precautions to reduce the risk exposure to infectious diseases and injuryfrom hot surfaces.Constantly moving and on your feet.May routinely lift items weighing up to 10 kilograms.What will my salary be?Salaries vary depending on the responsibilities of the position and the qualifications of theworker.Page 4

Gather original copies of all the re-requisites on page 3. Use the checklist provided atthe end of this information package. Once you have gathered all this information pleaseemail continuing.education@norquest.ca to set up an interview. Bring your prerequisiteswith you to the interview. Meet with the program representative to ensure that all pre-requisites have been met.The interview will also ensure that this program is the right fit for you and that you havethe time to commit to its entirety. If you have NOT met all the requirements, you will be denied access into the programuntil all pre-requisites can be verified. You have until the registration deadline tocomplete the registration process. If you have met all the requirements for admission into the program, you will receive anapproved registration form which you will fill in and register at the Office of theRegistrar. Please see below for registration options.How to Register for a ClassFull course fees for continuing education classes must be paid at the time of registration. Noparticipant may attend class without full payment or proper billing authorization. If students do not provide notification of a classwithdrawal, a failing grade will be recorded on their record.Full refunds of tuition and materials and supplies fee (if applicable) will be granted witha $25 fee retained by the college. Alternatively, a student may opt to transfer toanother class scheduled at another time, but within the same academic semester. Inthis case, no processing fee will apply.Withdrawals received less than two business days prior to the course start date willnot be eligible for a refund or a transfer.Non-attendance at any class is not notice of withdrawal. A refund may be issued to a credit card if it was the original source ofpayment.
