Reference Story EOP Biodiesel AGALLWEILER Delivers Pumps Meeting theSpecific Requirements During BiodieselProductionChemical centrifugal pump of the CNB50-200 series, pumped liquid: soy oil.Production of biodiesel and other biogenic fuels (biofuels) has beenexhibiting strong growth for about two years. This trend is driven byincreasing oil prices, the need to reduce greenhouse gases (Kyoto protocol),agricultural-assistance programs, and EU directive 2003/30/EC for addingbiofuels to gasoline and diesel. High oil prices, in particular, have given thisindustry a major boost and are expected to continue for the next severalyears. Pumps are a central component of every biofuel plant. As a result, several pump manufacturers have attempted to employ their standardpumps at these plants as a way to participate in the boom. Many of theseattempts have failed, however, and been very costly for both the plantoperator and its suppliers. With pumps from ALLWEILER operators biodieselplants use with low down times due service and therefore low TotalCost of Ownership.u8These three centrifugal pumps of the NT 125-400 series pump cooling water.Even high-performance pumps like these (maximum flow of 2300 m³/h,maximum delivery head of 145 m, and maximum pump pressure of 16 bar)came straight from the regular product line of ALLWEILER AG.Biofuels generally are difficult to pump. The chemical properties of biodieselare generally much different than conventional diesel and other fossil fuels. This is evidenced by the fact that motor manufacturers, especially in theautomobile industry, are very cautious when approving their products foruse with this fuel. Biofuels and their intermediate products are significantlymore aggressive than petroleum-based oils, and this is the main reason thatmakes them more difficult fluids for pumps (and motors) to handle.Materials that contact the liquid must be extremely durable and have theability to resist corrosion. This begins with the pump housing and continueswith the seals and bearing.Early on, ALLWEILER AG began investigating and resolving the specificrequirements for pumps used in the production of biodiesel. In fact,ALLWEILER delivered pumps to the first Austrian biodiesel plants more than10 years ago. As Germany's oldest pump manufacturer, ALLWEILER has theadvantage of a wide range of products and materials, including especially(magnetically-coupled) centrifugal, rotary lobe, side-channel, progressivecavity, and screw pumps. As a result, this manufacturer is capable ofdelivering complete pump packages for these types of plants. Many plantbuilders and operators find a complete package to be the most attractiveu9I O ENE R GY
