They are modular in design, comprising theexternally driven spindle unit with tool/workpiece holderand the motor for driving the spindle.There is a choice of two basic types. The motor and spindleare connected to one another either via a belt or via acoupling.Conventional spindle designsFor conventional spindles, the Siemens product rangecontains different versions of asynchronous motors rangingfrom 2.8 to 286 kW 1) , and can therefore provide a suitablespindle motor for every machining technique – milling,turning or grinding. © Siemens AG 2009Motors for conventional spindlesAsynchronous motors for conventional spindles 1PH8 forced-ventilated, 1PH8 water-cooled, 1PH7, 1PH41PH8 motors are the new Siemens standard for implementationin conventional machine tool spindles. The compactmotors are highly dynamic with excellent concentricity andlow vibration. They give machine tool spindles a high degreeof precision and help to increase productivity.With speeds up to 20,000 rpm, power ratings from 2.8 to300 kW and different versions in terms of protection andcooling type as well as various bearing designs, 1PH8 motorsare suitable for a wide range of spindle types.Integrated encoders maintain constant speed and allow thespindles to be positioned, for example on automatic toolchanging.In addition to the asynchronous variant, 1PH8 motors are alsoavailable in highly compact synchronous variants. This furtherexpands the universal implementation possibilities of themotors.
