A fund-raisingcampaign for Toledo’s 97-year old Wieting Theatrewas a cover story in theDecember Past Times isone. The second was aninterview with former Marshalltownresident CyrusShepard. He and his wifeDawn started an Internetbasedbusiness in March. It is the cover story for thismonth’s Marshalltimes. It also applies to 95-year old fitness enthusiastJack LaLanne. I’ll get toLaLanne later in the column. The attitude-altitudeconnection exists amongsome in Toledo, especiallythose involved in trying toraise 1.2 million dollars toremodel the Wieting Theatre.Located in downtownToledo, the “Wieting” as itis called by some, is inneed of major remodeling.Specifically, organizerswant to make it last another100 years. To bestunderstand the fund-raisingefforts, I called Toledo’sJim Roan, who, alongwith others, is involved inthe campaign.Roan’s can-do attitudecame through during aMCRILL-STOWELL-CHRISTENSEN INSURANCE202 E. State St. • Marshalltowncommittee had raisedmore than $300,000.In the interview, Roanexcitedly talked about thehiring of a successfulgrant-writer whose job willbe do find other monies.Roan convinced metheir goal will be met.Shepard experiencedsome challenges as a student. He attended threecolleges over a nine yearperiod before graduatingwith a degree in Film fromthe University of SouthernCalifornia, a Los Angelesbasedprivate college.Other stops were at theUniversity of Chicago andIowa State University. He, like Roan, conveyeda positive “can do”attitude. His wife Dawn(Helfer) is also of Marshalltown.Again, the recession isnot getting in way of theirplans. Now to 95-year oldJack LaLanne.A recent article in theSan Francisco Chronicleabout LaLanne by Scottrecent telephone interview.I asked him if the currentrecession, whichsome say is the worstsince the Great Depression, was interfering withfund-raising.Roan replied quicklyand sincerely, “it is a goodtime to do this,” he said.He should know. Inrecent years he has beeninvolved in several successfulbuilding/remodelingcampaigns for notableToledo-area projects.Wieting donationspledged or received todate have backed upRoan’s comments.
