Volume 02, Issue 02 Apr-Jun 1997FOR YOUR INFORMATIONThis section consists of information on people andplaces that share our surname. Some data arecompiled from public records while other aresubmitted to the editor by interested parties.Dear Editor,I am trying to reach any GOINS/GOINES/GOING/GOINGS. I think that all of these names, and probablymore, had the same origin and are the same family. Mostof the people did not know how to spell or write during theearly days. I understand that they possibly migrated orcame out of the American Indian or probably mixed withthe American Indian -- maybe Cherokee. I also understandthat they came out of North Carolina or Virginia but howthey got there is unknown. Yours Truly, Donald GOINS,#722, 949 Barron Rd., Keithville, LA 71047.Closing the door on J.K. GourdinA hearing will be held Tuesday, March 11 (1997) at J.K.(ed. John Keith) Gourdin Elementary School to Get publicinput on closing the school. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.About 285 students currently attend J.K. Gourdin, which includes K thru 4th. It is located in Pineville and isthe smallest elementary school in Berkeley County. Onewing of the school was constructed in 1929, making it theoldest elementary school building in the county. Theschool is likely to be consolidated with St. StephenElementary in what used to be St. Stephen High School.District 8 school board member Wilhelmina Moore, who represents Pineville residents, opposes theconsolidation. "Research has shown students do better insmaller schools. I hate to see us close all our ruralschools," she said during the January 28th school boardmeeting."Folks are concerned about consolidation," saidChuck Washington, president of the PTA at J.K. Gourdin."They can see the writing is on the wall, but they'rereluctant. They hate to see their neighborhood schoolclosed. And they want to make sure it's done the rightway."SOURCE: Berkeley County Times newspaper.A Very Very Brief History of Berkeley CountyBerkeley County was named for two of the LordsProprietors of South Carolina -- Lord John Berkeley (d.1678) and Sir William Berkeley (d. 1677). The county wasoriginally named in 1682, and at one time it included theparishes of St. John, St. James-Goose Creek, St. James-Santee, St. Stephen, St. Thomas, and St Denis. In 1769 the area became part of Charleston District, and it did not become a separate county again until 1882.The county seat was Mount Pleasant from 1882 until 1895,when it was moved to Monks Corner. The area was settled in the late seventeenth centuryby English and French Huguenot planters and theirAfrican slaves. The French Huguenot influence is rootedin the area and can be seen by many of the surnames fromthat area, i.e., Bordeaux, Deveaux, Dupree, Gaillard,Gourdin, Mazych, Ravenell, and Rembert, and from placenames, i.e., Bethera, Bonneau, Huger, Ravenell, andRembert.Rice was the most profitable crop grown by plantersup to the time of the Civil War. Many of the old riceplantations are now covered by waters of Lake Moultrie, which was built in the 1940s as part of the Santee-Cooperhydroelectric project.SOURCE: The South Carolina State Library, 1996.(Continued from page 2)GOURDINE Benjamin M (Pvt): b. 22 Dec 1908,Pineville, Berkeley Co; res.
