The J. Edward Berk Distinguished LecturerThe J. Edward Berk Distinguished Lecturer, formerly known as The Stuart Lecturer, is aperson prominent in gastroenterology or a related area. This individual is nominated by thePresident and the appointment is subject to approval by the Board of Trustees. This lectureshipwas established in recognition of the significant contributions made by J. EdwardBerk, MD, MACG, to clinical gastroenterology during his long and distinguished clinicaland academic career. A nationally and internationally renowned physician and teacher, Dr.Berk also served as ACG President from 1975-1976.2012 LecturerMark Feldman, MD, FACGIs Gastric Secretion Still Relevant?Dr. Mark Feldman is William O. Tschumy Chair of the Departmentof Internal Medicine at Texas Health Presbyterian HospitalDallas and program director of the hospital’s internal medicineresidency. He is also medical director of research at Texas HealthPresbyterian Dallas and is a clinical professor of internal medicineat UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas.An author of more than 175 peer-reviewed research articles andmore than 50 book chapters on a range of medical topics, Dr.Feldman is an editor of Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease, widelyconsidered the world’s preeminent work on digestive diseases.The book was recently named the world’s top gastroenterologytextbook by the British Medical Association. Over the years, his research has appeared inscience’s leading medical journals, including The Journal of Clinical Investigation, The NewEngland Journal of Medicine, the Journal of American Medical Association, and a widevariety of gastroenterology journals including the American Journal of Gastroenterology.In 2008, Dr. Feldman was also awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians,one of the highest honors bestowed on physicians in the United States. Earlier in hiscareer, he received the coveted Young Distinguished Scientist Award from the AmericanFederation for Clinical Research and received the prestigious C.A. Ewald Prize, presentedby the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Disease.He graduated from Temple University in 1968 with a degree in mathematics. He latergraduated first in his class from Temple University School of Medicine, where he completedhis medical residency. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at UT Southwesternin 1978. In 1997, he was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the TempleUniversity School of Medicine. Dr. Feldman was recently named by the American Collegeof Physicians as Texas Chapter Laureate for 2012.3


Emily Couric Memorial LecturerThe Emily Couric Memorial Lecture was developed by the ACG, the Virginia GastroenterogicalSociety (VGS) and the Old Dominion Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates(ODSGNA) to honor Virginia State Senator Emily Couric, who lost her battle with pancreaticcancer in October of 2001. Senator Couric was a strong advocate for healthcare issues,particularly in her instrumental work to pass the nation’s first legislation mandating healthinsurance coverage for colorectal cancer screening. The Emily Couric Lecturer is someoneprominent in the field of GI cancer related topics. This individual is nominated by thePresident following consultation with the VGS and the appointment is subject to approvalby the Board of Trustees.2012 LecturerCarol A. Burke, MD, FACGOptimizing the Diagnosis and Management of Patients with HereditaryColorectal CancerDr. Carol A. Burke, MD, FACG, FACP, is the President of theCollaborative Group of the Americas on Inherited ColorectalCancer. She has been a staff member in the Department ofGastroenterology and Hepatology at the Cleveland Clinic sincegraduating from her fellowship there in 1993. She holds a jointappointment in the Taussig Cancer Center and the Departmentof Colorectal Surgery. She is the Director of the Center for ColonPolyp and Cancer Prevention and the Head of the section ofPolyposis in the Sanford R. Weiss Center for Hereditary ColorectalNeoplasia.She is internationally known for her expertise in the inheritedcolon cancer syndromes and the prevention of colorectal neoplasia. Her area of clinicaland research interests include the prevention of colorectal neoplasia both in sporadicindividuals and those with the inherited colorectal cancer syndromes. She has funding forher research through the NCI, NIH, USDA and industry.She has been involved in the education of medical students, residents and fellows since1991 and has developed and coordinated the digestive disease curriculum for trainees inthe in and out-patient setting in the Department.6


She is the author of Colonoscopy for Dummies and has authored or co-authored over 50publications. She is a visiting professor, and invited speaker at national and internationalconferences on the prevention of colorectal neoplasia and the inherited colon cancersyndromes. David Y. Graham LecturerThe David Y. Graham Lecturer is a distinguished individual in the field of gastroenterology.The presenter is chosen by the President and is subject to approval by the Board of Trustees.This named lectureship was established in 2004 in recognition of the many contributionsto clinical gastroenterology by David Y. Graham, MD, MACG. The lectureship was madepossible through a donation by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and Meretek Diagnostics,Inc. Dr. Graham gave the inaugural presentation.2012 LecturerJohn S. Fordtran, MD, FACGFactitious DiseaseDr. Fordtran is a native of Stockdale, Texas, near San Antonio, andwas born in 1931. He attended the University of Texas at Austinfrom 1949 to 1952 and then Tulane Medical School from 1952 to1956. He then came to Dallas and was an intern and resident ininternal medicine at Parkland Memorial Hospital from 1956 to 1958.He had a brief stint as a researcher at the National Institutes ofHealth (NIH) in Bethesda, MD, from 1958 to 1959, but he missedthe involvement in clinical medicine. He then moved to the IndianHealth Service, where he served as chief of medicine on the NavajoReservation at Fort Defiance Hospital in Arizona for 16 months,during 1959 to 1960. His next step was to become a research fellowunder the tutelage of Franz Ingelfinger, MD, in Boston from 1960to 1962. Dr. Fordtran developed the use of a nonabsorbable marker of gastrointestinal fluidvolume, which permitted him to measure a variety of key, previously unexplored issues inthe physiology of absorption and secretion by the gut.In 1962, Dr. Fordtran returned to Dallas as an instructor in internal medicine at UTSWand Parkland Memorial Hospital, under the careful guidance of Dr. Don Seldin. Hequickly rose through the academic ranks, being named chief of gastroenterology in 1963and full professor of medicine in 1969. He served as associate editor of the Journal ofClinical Investigation from 1972 to 1977, was elected to the American Society for ClinicalInvestigation (aka the “Young Turks”) in 1968 and became its president in 1976, and wasalso elected to the Association of American Physicians (aka the “Old Turks”) in 1972. Heserved as the editor in chief of Gastroenterology from 1977 to 1981. He had grants from theNIH throughout his active research career and won a prestigious MERIT Award from theNIH in 1991. He published over 182 original articles from 1961 to 2010, which included 20papers in the New England Journal of Medicine, 38 in the Journal of Clinical Investigation,and 65 in Gastroenterology.8


During his career, Dr. Fordtran served as chairman of the Department of Internal Medicineat BUMC from 1979 to 1996 and president of Baylor Research Institute from 1991 to 2000. In1978, Dr. Fordtran was bestowed a rare honor by the College when he became an honoraryfellow in the ACG. He also received numerous awards from the American GastroenterologicalAssociation (AGA), including the Distinguished Achievement Award for his research in1971, the Fiterman Award for Clinical Research in 1990, the Distinguished Educator Awardin 1991, the Julius Friedenwald Award for contributions to the field of gastroenterology in1993, and the Janssen Award for Lifetime Achievement in Gastroenterology in 1999. Dr.Fordtran has had international impact as well. He won the King Faisal International Prizein Medicine in 1984 and was elected fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London in1997. In addition, he won the Ralph Tompsett Award for Excellence in Medical Educationat BUMC in 2007.Past David Y. David Sun Lectureship in Postgraduate EducationThe David Sun Lectureship in Postgraduate Education was established by Mrs. Sun inmemory of her husband. Dr. Sun died at the peak of his career. He was an outstandinggastroenterologist and investigator. The speaker, with a distinguished background ingastroenterology or an allied field, is chosen by the President and Course Directors of thePostgraduate Program subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees.2012 LecturerDouglas A. Drossman, MD, MACGHelping Your Patient by Helping Yourself: How to Improve thePatient-Physician RelationshipDr. Drossman received his MD degree at Albert Einstein Collegeof Medicine and obtained his medical residency at the Universityof North Carolina School of Medicine and NYU-Bellevue MedicalCenter. He subspecialized in psychosocial (psychosomatic)medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and inGastroenterology at the University of North Carolina.Dr. Drossman is in private practice in Chapel Hill, NC. He is alsoan adjunct Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry at the Universityof North Carolina School of Medicine, and was formerly the codirectorof the UNC Center for Functional Gastrointestinal andMotility Disorders (1993-2012). He was founder, past chair (1989-1993) and newsletter editor of the Functional Brain-Gut Research Group of the AGA, Chair(since 1989) of the Rome Committees (Rome I II and III) and President of the Board of theRome Foundation (since 2004), past Chair of the Functional GI American Digestive HealthFoundation’s Digestive Health Initiative (1999-2001) and of the Motility and Nerve-Gut Sectionof the AGA Council (2003-2005). He is Past-President of the American PsychosomaticSociety (1997), a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Master of the AmericanCollege of Gastroenterology, and is on the Board of Directors and Chair of the ScientificAdvisory Board of the International Foundation for Functional GI Disorders (IFFGD). He hasserved on two committees of the Institute of Medicine Committee on Gulf War and Health,has been an Ad Hoc member of NIH-NCCAM Advisory board, and is on the NIH-NationalCommission on Digestive Diseases.10


Dr. Drossman has written over 500 articles and book chapters, has published two books, aGI Procedure Manual, and textbook of Functional GI disorders (Rome I, II, III), and serves onsix editorial and advisory boards in gastroenterology, psychosomatic medicine, behavioralmedicine, and patient health. He served 5-years as Associate Editor of the journalGastroenterology and was the Gastroenterology Section Editor of the Merck Manual for17 years.Dr. Drossman’s research relates to the clinical, epidemiological, psychosocial and treatmentaspects of gastrointestinal disorders. He has developed and validated several assessmentmeasures (e.g., illness severity and quality of life questionnaires for IBD and IBS, and anabuse severity scale) for clinical research, is involved in psychosocial outcomes research,and has a research program on brain imaging in IBS. He has been principal investigatoron several NIH sponsored research grants including a multi-center grant for treatment(antidepressant and cognitive-behavioral treatment) of the functional bowel disorders.He also consults with regulatory and pharmaceutical agencies regarding the design andevaluation of treatment trials. He is a recipient of the Janssen Award for Clinical Research(1999), the American Psychosomatic Society President’s Award (2003), the AGA Joseph B.Kirsner Fiterman Award in Clinical Research (2005), the AGA Mentors Research ScholarAward (2007) and has received several “Who’s Who,” “Patient Choice” and “Best Doctors”citations over the past 15 years.His educational and clinical interests relate to the psychosocial and behavioral aspects ofpatient care. He has produced numerous articles and videotapes on the biopsychosocialaspects of medical care, medical interviewing and the patient-doctor relationship, andreceived second prize at the 1997 AMA International Film Festival. As a Charter Fellow of theAmerican Academy of Communication in Health Care, he facilitates workshops to developclinical skills in physician-patient communication. He received the AGA DistinguishedEducator Award (2004), and is featured as one of 12 gastroenterologists in a book “BestGastroenterology Practices” (2007).11

Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement AwardThe Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award, formerly the ACG Clinical Achievement Award,is presented to not more than one Member/Fellow of the College in any year and is madein recognition of distinguished contributions to clinical gastroenterology over a significantperiod of time. Specific criteria include, in addition to a career of distinguished clinicalpractice of gastroenterology, contributions in patient care, clinical science, clinicaleducation, technological innovation, and public and community service.2012 RecipientDavid A. Johnson, MD, FACGDr. David A. Johnson is Professor of Medicine and Chief ofGastroenterology at Eastern Virginia School of Medicine. Despitehis primary focus on the clinical practice of gastroenterology, he haspublished extensively in the internal medicine/gastroenterologyliterature, contributing over 350 articles/chapters/abstracts inpeer-reviewed journals and books. Additionally, he co-edited theAmerican College of Physicians (ACP) book Dyspepsia and editedtwo GI Clinics of North America series on “Obesity Issues forGastroenterologists” and edited the recent ACP module on CRCscreening. His primary research interests are esophageal refluxdisease and colon cancer screening.He is a Past President of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and served theACG previously as Governor (VA), chair of ACG Quality Council Task Force, and memberof the Educational Affairs, Publications, Constitution and Bylaws (Chair), and Nominating(Chair) committees. Additionally since inception, he has served on the executive committeeand is Treasurer of the ACG/ASGE GI Quality Improvement Consortium (GIQuIC) and theexecutive committee for the GI Political Action Committee (GIPAC). He has co-chaired theACG National Fellows meeting for the last 17 yrs and previously been Course Director forthe ACG Annual Postgraduate course in 1994.He co-founded the National Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee and co-chaired thatcommittee for 10 yrs. Since 2000, he has served on both the GI Multi-Society CRC ScreeningTask Force and ACG guidelines committee for CRC screening and has coauthored thesescreening guidelines and other ongoing publications from 2000-present. Additionally, hewas a member of the CDC Task Force for quality colonoscopy. While President of the ACG, heformed the consensus groups with the American College of Cardiology and American HeartAssociation and from 2007-2011, he worked as a coauthor on the 3 separate consensusdocuments which were developed and published (on NSAID and antiplatelet issues forcardiology and gastroenterology).17


Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award, continuedIn May 2012, he was acknowledged as the invited lecturer at the National Institutesof Health as a “Great Teacher” (this is awarded to 2 non-NIH physicians per year andstreamed to 2200 sites around the world with a target audience is 50,000-100,000 viewers.He has been honored as “Master of Gastroenterology” and “Presidential Award” by theVirginia GI Society and received the Distinguished Faculty Award from Eastern VirginiaMedical School.He currently serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine (Gastroenterology) Boardof Examiners. He has served as the Gastroenterology Technical Advisory chair for theNational Quality Forum (NQF) and as well as steering committee member quality outcomesNQF task force and participated in all GI related task force activities from 2005-2011 andchaired 3 of the 4 task force meetings. He has been a technical advisor to Medicare (1995-1997) for time component evaluations.He is the past co-editor of Reviews in Gastroenterological Disorders, as well as JournalMedicine and section editor for the American Journal of Gastroenterology. He is thecurrent co-editor of the American College of Gastroenterology Education Universe, GIsection editor for Medscape Gastroenterology, Medscape GI Viewpoints, and MedscapeGI Consultant Corner, as well as the esophageal section editor for Journal WatchGastroenterology (New England Journal of Medicine). He is on numerous editorial boardsand reviews for 21 medical journals including all of the GI journals. He was a member andreviewer of the National Institutes of Health study section for esophageal/gastric diseasesand has provided consultant testimony to the FDA.He was the physician who worked with Senator Emily Couric to put through the historicfirst legislation to mandate colon cancer screening with colonoscopy as the preferredstandard. This initiative, first in Virginia, has set the model for other states which havefollowed with similar legislation mandating CRC screening. He remains as a GI advisor forthe Entertainment Industry Foundation (Katie Couric) for CRC screening and has servedas the coordinating advisor for their annual EIF report card on state legislation for CRCscreening.18

Community Service AwardThe Community Service Award is bestowed upon an ACG Allied Health Member, ResidentMember, Trainee Member, Member, Fellow, or Master who has initiated or has been involvedin volunteer programs or has provided extensive volunteer service post-training.The service must have been performed on a completely voluntary basis and not for thecompletion of training or position requirements. Such service may include but is not limitedto the following: Community educational programs (e.g. Colon Cancer awareness); workingin free clinics; mentoring advocacy groups or local government committees; teachingin under-served schools related to health education; and political work on committees forcomprehensive health insurance or other issues.2012 RecipientMarch E. Seabrook, MD, FACGDr. March Seabrook is a lifelong resident and devoted citizenof South Carolina. After graduating from Wofford College, hecompleted his medical education and internal medicine residencyand his gastroenterology fellowship in Columbia. He has enjoyedprivate practice in the midlands of South Carolina since 1991. Hehas been involved in many local and state medical organizationsand is a founding member of the South Carolina GastroenterologyAssociation and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of theSouth Carolina Medical Association. Dr. Seabrook has also servedas ACC Governor for South Carolina (2006-2012) and as chair of theACG National Affaris Committee since 2010.Dr. Seabrook’s passion for colorectal cancer screening and prevention began early in hiscareer when two of his good friends lost their fathers to this disease. This fact along withthe significant disparities that exist in South Carolina as it relates to colorectal cancer andcolorectal cancer screening influenced him to work with others to develop awareness andscreening programs for the state. Currently, there is an ongoing collaboration between thegastroenterologists and several organizations including the University of South Carolina,Blue Cross Blue Shield, CVS / Caremark and Genentech to promote statewide colorectalcancer awareness and screening programs. Several years ago, Dr. Seabrook began theFANNi program in his office. This program provides colonoscopy and pathology services atno cost to individuals identified by the Free Medical Clinic and other physicians. These areperformed on Friday At Noon or Nine.Dr. Seabrook credits any success that has occurred in South Carolina related to colorectalcancer screening to the dedicated and tireless work of a few individuals and especiallyMarylou Stinson.20

International Leadership AwardThe International Leadership Award is given to a Fellow or Master of the ACG in recognitionof outstanding and substantial contributions to gastroenterology, to the College andto the international gastroenterology community. Substantial contributions internationallymay include, but are not limited to the following: The training of individuals from othercountries who have gone on to become leaders in gastroenterology in their community;leadership in international organizations that has resulted in improvement in the care ofpatients; and participation in humanitarian efforts.2012 RecipientFlavio Steinwurz, MD, FACGDr. Flavio Steinwurz received his medical degree in 1980 andcompleted his residency in 1984 at São Paulo Federal University,São Paulo, Brazil. In 1987 he trained in Gastroenterology with afocus on Inflammatory Bowel Diseases at Lenox Hill Hospital,NY, on the service of Dr. Burton I. Korelitz. In 1988 he returnedto Brazil and became an Assistant Professor at Santos Schoolof Medicine and was Board Certified in Gastroenterology by theBrazilian Medical Association (AMB) and the Brazilian Federationof Gastroenterology (FBG). In 1994 he became a fellow of theAmerican College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and in 1996 hereceived, with honour, his Mastership in Gastroenterology by theBrazilian Institute for the Study and Research in Gastroenterology.From 2004 to 2010 he was a Governor for the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG)for Brazil and from 2007 to 2010 he was the Director of Research of the Albert EinsteinJewish Hospital, São Paulo, Brazil. In 2010 he became a member of the InternationalOrganization for the study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IOIBD). He is also a memberof the advisory board and/or reviewer for many scientific journals including the AmericanJournal of Gastroenterology, Digestive Disease and Sciences, Journal of Crohn’s andColitis, and Clinics. In 2010 Dr. Steinwurz received the Geraldo Siffert Award for the BestAbstract presented at the Brazilian Week of Gastroenterology.22

Frank is Clinical Professor of Medicine at DrexelUniversity College of Medicine and an active member of theteaching program in the Division of Gastroenterology. She isPast-President of the American Society for GastrointestinalEndoscopy, Past-President of the Bockus International Societyof Gastroenterology, a consultant to the Gastrointestinal DrugAdvisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administrationand former Chair of the FDA’s Gastroenterology-Urology DevicesPanel. She served as Governor for Eastern Pennsylvania of theAmerican College of Gastroenterology and was the representativefor gastroenterology to the Pennsylvania Medicare CarrierAdvisory Committee from its inception to 2004. The Barbara B. Frank, MD Endoscopic Learning Center was establishedin her honor in 2007. Also in 2007, the Barbara Frank Scholarship Award of the DigestiveCenter for Women Network was established.Dr. Frank did her internship and fellowship in gastroenterology at the Hospital of theUniversity of Pennsylvania under Dr. Frank Brooks. She then joined the medical staff ofBryn Mawr Hospital and subsequently moved to Crozer-Chester Medical Center to becomeDirector of Gastroenterology. She has served on the faculty at Hahnemann, now Drexel,since 1973.Locally, she was President of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of the Delaware Valleyand continues to serve on their Governing Council. She has also served as Presidentof the Philadelphia Gastrointestinal Training Group and the Delaware Valley Society forGastrointestinal Endoscopy and was the first woman to be named “Physician of the Year”by the Philadelphia chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. She haschaired and served on numerous national and local committees in gastroenterology andhas published many articles in peer-reviewed journals. She is currently on the Board of thePhiladelphia Art Alliance and an active member of the Cosmopolitan Club.During the summer between college and medical school, Dr. Frank married Dr. LeonardFrank, a urologist at Jefferson University College of Medicine. He is a Fellowof the Royal College of Physicians of London, Edinburgh andCanada, and of the American Gastroenterology Association. Hehas been recognized with many prizes and medals for his workin Gastroenterology, where his special interests focus on the acidrelated disorders, Helicobacter pylori infection, the role of antiinflammatorydrugs and the gut and the clinical pharmacology oftreatment of gastrointestinal disease.
