BITUMEN — MANAGING THE RISK 1 DAYPRESENTER Barry GundersenThis is an essential risk awarenesscourse targeted at senior managers,engineers and supervisors involved inmanaging businesses or operationsthat include the storage, transport andproduction <strong>of</strong> bituminous materials;and road surfacing works. A separatecourse “Bitumen — Basic Safety” isintended for all others involved in theroading industry.It is absolutely essential that all thoseinvolved in managing or supervisingbituminous operations or businesses,fully understand the significant hazardspresented by the materials, related plantand equipment, the legislative requirementsimposed and the procedures required toadequately manage the many risks involved.The one day course will be presented withthe aid <strong>of</strong> graphic practical demonstrationsand is designed to help managers complywith Health and Safety responsibilities.WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN‘BITUMEN — BASIC SAFETY’ AND ‘BITUMEN— MANAGING THE RISK’?The “Bitumen — Managing the Risk”course is based on the Bitumen — BasicSafety course, but differs in that it isaimed specifically at managers and putsa “management slant” on bitumen safetyissues. Some <strong>of</strong> the more basic introductorythings in the “Bitumen — Basic Safety”course have been removed and beensubstituted with relevant managementissues.There should be no compelling needfor those managers who have recentlyattended the “Bitumen Safety” course toattend the “Bitumen — Managing the Risk”course — although if it is more than 3 — 5DATESCHRISTCHURCHAUCKLANDPALMERSTON NORTH24 May7 June4 Octoberyears since they have, then it would be anideal refresher.However, records show that many middlemanagers in the road surfacing industryhave never attended the “Bitumen — BasicSafety” course, or have attended once,then never re-attended to routinely refreshtheir knowledge.
