The SAMRO Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition 2012 will take place from 24 - 28 September this year. National Auditions took place in May 2012. The SAMRO Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition is organised by the Tygerberg branch of the South African Society of Music Teacher and was inspired by the SASMT’s Hubert van der Spuy 23 years ago. The competition provides a platform for thriving talent amongst young musicians with prizes worth more than R 50 000 for the winners and their teachers. It is sponsored by SAMRO, UNISA, the ATKV, the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre, Music@Work and several anonymous donors. 25 participants are accepted into the 3rd and semi-final round and only 8 finalists perform at the prestigious gala concert held at the end of the competition week. 02 String, woodwind and brass instrumentalists, pianists as well as classical guitar, harp and percussion players are given a platform to showcase their talent over the 4 rounds of the competition. Each student needs to prepare a programme of 5 pieces chosen from different style periods in music; Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern. Participants are further encouraged to perform South African compositions. There are compulsory music style periods for the various rounds of the competition with category prizes awarded for each. Enjoy every moment. We are proud of you!!! A SPECIAL CONCERT IS BEING PLANNED IN HONOUR OF LEON HARTSHORNE FOR SUNDAY 21 OCTOBER 2012 AT 15:30 IN THE AUDITORIUM. DETAILS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE AS SOON AS FINAL ARRANGEMENTS ARE MADE. Windworx 2012 The 2nd Windworx Fanfare took place Saturday 19 May at Wynberg Boys High School. This Fanfare is a wonderful platform and opportunity that has been set for all wind bands to perform and to be evaluated on their performance by experienced musicians/conductors. Even the conductors of each orchestra are evaluated and also receive very good remarks and tips on how to improve their conducting skills. All our Wind Orchestras participated in this year’s Fanfare and did exceptionally well. We had to prepare two programmes, one a formal performance that took place in the main hall, and then an informal programme that served as entertainment and created a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the audience who had to brave the cold weather in the amphitheatre. Although it being a first for the Beginner Wind Orchestra, they still received two highest honors diplomas for their performance! Both the Junior and Concert Wind Orchestras walked away with two Cum Laude Diplomas. Well done to all of you!! Except for the fact that it was freezing cold, everybody had a great time and it was heartwarming to see how many of our youngest orchestra members, as well as some of our adult members who stayed to listen to the evening concert and joined in with the massed bands. Besides practicing hours on end, it also adds to your development as a musician to attend concerts and listen to good quality music. GERMAN EXCELLENCE Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre presented Master Classes in oboe, clarinet, bassoon and ensemble playing on 5 – 8 March 2012. The Trio de’Anches Jochen Müller-Brincken (oboe), Manfred Lindner (clarinet) and Albrecht Holder (bassoon) inspired with their unbelievable knowledge, musicality and enthusiasm. The classes were well attended by pupils from the Music Centre, the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch; participants even included UCT lecturer Becky Steltzner (who was preparing for her Doctorate exam), CPO’s finest bassoonists Brandon Phillips and Simon Ball (playing the Alan Stephenson Double Concerto!) and bassoonist and ex-Hugo Lambrechts teacher, Glyn Partridge. The Trio entertained us with a magnificent Concert held in the Auditorium on Sunday the 4th March. “I had the priviledge to participate in the masterclasses. My lesson lasted for more than an hour and a half and still it was over far too soon. We worked mostly on the Saint-Saens Sonata and Jochen had wonderful tips on the interpretation, use of tone colour and general helpful ideas in posture. When they next visit our country I will be the first in the audience and first to book a class. EXCELLENT!” - Carin Bam From left to right: Jochen Müller-Brincken (oboe), Albrecht Holder (bassoon) and Manfred Lindner (clarinet) Jochen Müller-Brincken The oboist Jochen Müller-Brincken studied with, amongst others, Ingo Goritzki and Heinz Holliger, and won several national and international prizes at music competitions. In his ensuing career as orchestral musician, he performed as solo-oboist in several well-known German orchestras before he was appointed professor of oboe at the Music University of Würzburg. For five years, he was member of the orchestra of the Bayreuther Festspiele. Many recordings testify to his activities in the field of chamber music. Since 1989, he has been professor of oboe at the Music University of Würzburg. Manfred Lindner After his studies in Detmold, Manfred Lindner played as solo clarinettist in several well-known German orchestras. Since 2000, he has taught BAROQUE MASTER CLASSES BY ANTOINETTE LOHMANN On 7 March the Centre and particularly the String Department was highly privileged to have the internationally renowned Baroque violinist Antoinette Lohmann from the Netherlands visit us. She gave us Master classes on historically informed Baroque performance practices. The afternoon started with individual master classes with four of the Centre’s violin pupils Björn Lawson, Kaylen Lewis, Tineke Wolfaardt and Wian Zeeman who played movements from Vivaldi’s Concerto, the Handel Sonata and Bach’s Solo Partita. The master classes were open to the public and we were happy to welcome a few guests interested in Baroque music and teaching. Antoinette’s teaching style was extremely accessible, friendly, unpretentious, provoking logical thinking and quite entertaining, but most of all highly informative. Pupils, teachers and guests heard of historical facts that they had not heard before. It opened up a big gate for teachers clarinet at the music universities of Detmold, Essen and Folkwang while simultaneously playing solo clarinet in the orchestra of the Ludwigsburger Schloßfestspiele. He has undertaken concert tours as a soloist and chamber musician all over the world. As a teacher he has conducted master classes at numerous chamber music courses and is engaged in youth music programmes, amongst others the national Youth Orchestra. Since 2002, he has been professor of clarinet at the Music University of Folkwang. Albrecht Holder Albrecht Holder has won numerous prizes and awards at German and international music competitions. Extensive solo and chamber music concert activities have taken him to the US, Canada, South America, Asia, South Africa and Russia, apart from many other European countries. He has recorded bassoon concertos by Danzi, Molter, Lindpaintner and Rosetti, amongst others, under the Naxos label. Several of these concertos are first recordings. He has performed in the Festspielorchester of Bayreuth as well as the orchestra of the Ludwigsburger Schloßfestspiele. He regularly conducts courses in chamber music and bassoon master classes in Germany and elsewhere, including China. As a conductor and teacher, he looks back upon a long-standing engagement with several youth orchestras. Since 1997, he has been professor of Bassoon at the Music University of Wüfrzburg. Carin Bam and students alike toward a very different approach for teaching, playing and listening to Baroque music. Pupils were lucky to play their movements with a Baroque bow. They enjoyed that a lot! After the lessons Antoinette gave a lecture on Baroque Performance Practice containing even more interesting facts. She demonstrated her own original Baroque violin, a number of different Baroque bows dating from different Baroque periods and the gut strings. The day ended with Antoinette having a workshop with the Senior String orchestra and Ms Valentina Vorster. They worked on Chaccone by Purcell as well as the Vivaldi- Concerto Alla rustica. It was an extremely exciting hour and a half and we wished it had not passed so quickly. It left the players and the listeners very much inspired and hungry for more! We were very grateful to have Antoinette at the Centre. She actually had such a full schedule and only spent one week in South Africa, Cape Town. During this week she also had a recital and concert called “A Venetian Tonic” at the Endler Hall with Cape Consort ensemble who was also joined by Ms Valentina Vorster playing on a Baroque violin. The performance received this year’s Woordfees Trophy in the classical music section. Antoinette also enjoyed her time at the Centre and expressed her appreciation toward teachers for the work being done regarding the informed Baroque teaching of young musicians.
