To have crossed paths with Leon Hartshorne and his staff at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre
has always been a privilege and a blessing for me. To have been asked to prepare the foreword to
the latest edition of Libretto is an honor.
Windworx
2012
The 2nd Windworx Fanfare took place
Saturday 19 May at Wynberg Boys High
School.
This Fanfare is a wonderful platform and
opportunity that has been set for all wind
bands to perform and to be evaluated on
their performance by experienced musicians/conductors.
Even the conductors of
each orchestra are evaluated and also
receive very good remarks and tips on how
to improve their conducting skills.
All our Wind Orchestras participated in this
year’s Fanfare and did exceptionally well.
We had to prepare two programmes, one a
formal performance that took place in the
main hall, and then an informal programme
that served as entertainment and created a
warm and welcoming atmosphere for the
audience who had to brave the cold weather
in the amphitheatre.
Although it being a first for the Beginner
Wind Orchestra, they still received two
highest honors diplomas for their performance!
Both the Junior and Concert Wind
Orchestras walked away with two Cum
Laude Diplomas. Well done to all of you!!
Except for the fact that it was freezing cold,
everybody had a great time and it was
heartwarming to see how many of our
youngest orchestra members, as well as
some of our adult members who stayed to
listen to the evening concert and joined in
with the massed bands.
Besides practicing hours on end, it also adds
to your development as a musician to attend
concerts and listen to good quality music.
It’s always the little sacrifice one makes
that eventually lead to big successes.
GERMAN
EXCELLENCE
Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre presented Master
Classes in oboe, clarinet, bassoon and ensemble
playing on 5 – 8 March 2012. The Trio de’Anches
Jochen Müller-Brincken (oboe), Manfred Lindner
(clarinet) and Albrecht Holder (bassoon)
inspired with their unbelievable knowledge,
musicality and enthusiasm. The classes were
well attended by pupils from the Music Centre,
the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch;
participants even included UCT lecturer Becky
Steltzner (who was preparing for her Doctorate
exam), CPO’s finest bassoonists Brandon Phillips
and Simon Ball (playing the Alan Stephenson
Double Concerto!) and bassoonist and ex-Hugo
Lambrechts teacher, Glyn Partridge.
The Trio entertained us with a magnificent
Concert held in the Auditorium on Sunday the
4th March.
“I had the priviledge to participate in the
masterclasses. My lesson lasted for more than
an hour and a half and still it was over far too
soon. We worked mostly on the Saint-Saens
Sonata and Jochen had wonderful tips on the
interpretation, use of tone colour and general
helpful ideas in posture. When they next visit
our country I will be the first in the audience and
first to book a class. EXCELLENT!”
amongst others, Ingo Goritzki and Heinz Holliger,
and won several national and international
prizes at music competitions.
In his ensuing career as orchestral musician, he
performed as solo-oboist in several well-known
German orchestras before he was appointed
professor of oboe at the Music University of
Würzburg. For five years, he was member of
the orchestra of the Bayreuther Festspiele.
Many recordings testify to his activities in the
field of chamber music. Since 1989, he has been
professor of oboe at the Music University of
Würzburg.
BAROQUE MASTER CLASSES
BY ANTOINETTE LOHMANN
On 7 March the Centre and particularly the String
Department was highly privileged to have the
internationally renowned Baroque violinist
Antoinette Lohmann from the Netherlands visit
us. She gave us Master classes on historically
informed Baroque performance practices.
The afternoon started with individual master
classes with four of the Centre’s violin pupils
Björn Lawson, Kaylen Lewis, Tineke Wolfaardt
and Wian Zeeman who played movements from
Vivaldi’s Concerto, the Handel Sonata and Bach’s
Solo Partita. The master classes were open to
the public and we were happy to welcome a few
guests interested in Baroque music and teaching.
Antoinette’s teaching style was extremely
accessible, friendly, unpretentious, provoking
logical thinking and quite entertaining, but most
of all highly informative. Pupils, teachers and
guests heard of historical facts that they had not
heard before. It opened up a big gate for teachers
clarinet at the music universities of Detmold,
Essen and Folkwang while simultaneously
playing solo clarinet in the orchestra of the
Ludwigsburger Schloßfestspiele.
He has undertaken concert tours as a soloist and
chamber musician all over the world. As a teacher
he has conducted master classes at numerous
chamber music courses and is engaged in youth
music programmes, amongst others the national
Youth Orchestra. Since 2002, he has been
professor of clarinet at the Music University of
Folkwang.
Albrecht Holder Albrecht Holder has won
numerous prizes and awards at German and
international music competitions. Extensive solo
and chamber music concert activities have taken
him to the US, Canada, South America, Asia,
South Africa and Russia, apart from many other
European countries.
He has recorded bassoon concertos by Danzi,
Molter, Lindpaintner and Rosetti, amongst others,
under the Naxos label. Several of these concertos
are first recordings. He has performed in the
Festspielorchester of Bayreuth as well as the
orchestra of the Ludwigsburger Schloßfestspiele.
He regularly conducts courses in chamber music
and bassoon master classes in Germany and
elsewhere, including China. As a conductor and
teacher, he looks back upon a long-standing
engagement with several youth orchestras. Since
1997, he has been professor of Bassoon at the
Music University of Wüfrzburg.
Carin Bam
and students alike toward a very different
approach for teaching, playing and listening to
Baroque music. Pupils were lucky to play their
movements with a Baroque bow. They enjoyed
that a lot!
After the lessons Antoinette gave a lecture on
Baroque Performance Practice containing even
more interesting facts. She demonstrated her
own original Baroque violin, a number of
different Baroque bows dating from different
Baroque periods and the gut strings.
The day ended with Antoinette having a
workshop with the Senior String orchestra and
Ms Valentina Vorster. They worked on Chaccone
by Purcell as well as the Vivaldi- Concerto Alla
rustica. It was an extremely exciting hour and a
half and we wished it had not passed so quickly.
It left the players and the listeners very much
inspired and hungry for more!
We were very grateful to have Antoinette at the
Centre. She actually had such a full schedule
and only spent one week in South Africa, Cape
Town. During this week she also had a recital
and concert called “A Venetian Tonic” at the
Endler Hall with Cape Consort ensemble who
was also joined by Ms Valentina Vorster playing
on a Baroque violin. The performance received
this year’s Woordfees Trophy in the classical
music section.
Antoinette also enjoyed her time at the Centre
and expressed her appreciation toward teachers
for the work being done regarding the informed
Baroque teaching of young musicians.
We hope we can have her again in future!
Note: For those interested there are different CD
recordings of Antoinette Lohmann for sale.R100
each. Please contact Ms V.Vorster at A12.
VISIT BY CAPELLA CONCERTANTE
On Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 March the
students of our Music Centre once again had the
privilege to participate in Master classes given
by the members of Capella Concertante.
The ensemble was complemented by a double
bassist and soprano. The ensemble gave master
classes on Monday 20 February with bassoon
master classes as well as a lecture on breathing,
posture and memorization on Tuesday 21
February. The master classes on Tuesday were
followed by a concert by the ensemble. The
program included works by Mozart, Farkas,
Lehar and Hugo de Groot.
The highlight for the woodwind department was
the invitation by the group to perform with them
in the Concert held in the Auditorium on the
Tuesday evening.
We performed the Gounod Petite Symphonie
and a new work by South African composer
Allan Stephenson which was also a world
premiére, called Symphonette. The Symphonette,
consisting of a flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2
bassoons and 2 horns, was written as a complimentary
piece to accompany the Petite
Symphonie in a concert. During the first rehearsal
on the morning of 20 February, Allan Stepenson
was present to listen to the work and to help with
interpretation. What an incredible experience to
work with the composer himself.
We would like to encourage all our students to
make use of wonderful opportunities when they
come their way, especially when we have expert
musicians visiting the centre. It’s an opportunity
for one to grow.
It was such an honor to learn from and perform
with these wonderful and highly enthusiastic
musicians. We look forward to their next visit!
04
Carin Bam
What I have learned in the master class was quite
extraordinary because I, well... she actually
picked up that sometimes my reeds is resting on
the wrong lip when I breathe and my teacher and
I were not aware of it. It was quite difficult to
adjust.
The piece I performed was a movement from
the Grovlez (which happens to be one of my
favourite pieces!) and even though she did not
know the work she helped me tremendously
with sound and interpretation. It was
AWESOME! I really enjoyed the classes and
sure hope they will come again.
STRINGS REFRESHERS
COURSE 2012
The String Department began 2012 with
great enthusiasm.
The String Refreshers Course held in 2011
had been such a great success that a followup
one was planned from 11-13 January
this year so that all the string teachers from
the Western Cape could refresh their
pedagogical skills.
Mr Louis van der Watt, Lecturer in violin
from the University of Stellenbosch,
presented the three- day course covering a
wide range of topics including how to
teach vibrato, appropriate repertoire for
beginners and much more. One particularly
interesting topic was on how to teach pupils
to memorize. This lecture was not only
attended by string teachers but also by other
members of staff, which created quite a buzz
with musicians sharing their viewpoints and
discussing how memorization is achieved
on different instruments.
The input from the different teachers in
attendance was inspiring and it was
interesting to hear about their various
challenges and how they achieve their goals.
An important aspect of teaching is remedial
teaching for pupils with poor technique.
Many ideas were exchanged on how to keep
the pupil motivated whilst developing their
techniques.
Our stimulating course also included a fun
evening social with cheese and wine. All
who attended spoke of how motivated
and refreshed they were and how they
were looking forward to the Refreshers
course in 2013!

ORKESTEKONSERT
Die Orkestekonsert van 2012 het die gehoor
waarlik in vervoering gehad!
2012!
Die eerste item, Pomp and
PIANO RECITAL BY
CRISTINA
ORTIZ
The Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium hosts many
classical performances, including ones forming
part of the Hugo Series organized by Mr Louis
Fouche. Audience appreciation for these events
is growing and this was especially the case
when world renowned Brazilian pianist, Cristina
Ortiz, visited Cape Town in February this year.
There was much anticipation among Capetonians
ahead of Ms Ortiz's visit to Cape Town. She was
not only the winner of the prestigious Van Cliburn
International Piano Competition in 1969, but
also the first woman to do so.
The attendance at this event was excellent with
every available seat sold and the excitement was
tangible in the foyer even before the concert
began.
Ms Ortiz's recital featured only works by Chopin
consisting of the four Scherzi and four Ballades,
which suited her capricious and spontaneous
style of playing. Her warm stage personality and
engaging manner easily drew listeners on
a musical voyage and the audience showed their
appreciation with a standing ovation at the end.
What a privilege it was to have heard this
celebrated pianist play, and one looks forward
to similar quality artists performing in this
fabulous venue in the future.
Mrs Carin Bam is not just a fantastic teacher,
but still makes time to perform on a regular
basis and has just launched her cd on selected
works by Neil Solomon, with Pieter van Zyl
on piano and this recorded is highly
recommended to all oboists especially!!
Mrs Bam started playing the oboe at the age
of thirteen at the Hugo Lambrechts Music
Centre. She completed her studies in 2000
at the University of Stellenbosch, under the
tutelage of Sergei Burdokov and then
returned to Hugo Lambrechts in 2001 as an
oboe and bassoon teacher. She is currently
the Head of Department: Woodwinds.
She has been an active ad hoc orchestral
member playing with several professional
orchestras, including the Cape Philharmonic,
Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic and the
Namibian Symphony Orchestras. She is also
a regular player with many ad hoc orchestras
throughout South Africa.
As an avid chamber musician, Mrs Bam
performs regularly with guitarist Mr. Uliano
Marchio at venues that include Artscape
and the Baxter Concert Hall. She has been
invited to perform as a solois with the
Winelands Orchestra, Hugo Lambrechts
Symphony Orchestra and the Musicanti
Chamber Orchestra. In 2010 she completed
her UNISA Licentiate in Music Performance
and was placed on the Roll of Honor.
Marisa Marchio
(Voice)
Mrs Marchio was born in Italy and grew up in
South Africa. She attended school at St Mary’s
in Cape Town and took to the stage at an early
age performing at every available opportunity.
As a schoolgirl she played the lead role of “Yum,
Yum” in the comic opera the Mikado. She also
performed the lead role of the musical “Naughty
Marietta” and had to learn the part in one day.
Mrs Marchio studied with Flora Nielsen at the
Royal Academy, London and with Fred Dalberg
at Stellenbosch.
Mrs Marchio was privileged to study with Andre
Turp (French-Canadian Tenor) in London where
she had two hour lessons six days a week. This
was her most valuable experience; being
immersed in singing and learning real Italian
voice technique.
A pinnacle point of her music career was her
first role in Italy at Benevento, near Naples,
where she sang the title role in Puccini’s “Suor
Angelica”. Mrs Marchio won the Mario del
Monaco prize for excellence in singing and the
Maschera d’Oro acting prize for her performance.
She sang La Traviata under the baton of Renato
Palumbo, who at that stage was an up and coming
conductor, who now conducts worldwide at La
Scala, Paris Opera, and Berlin Oper, just to name
a few. Maestro Palumbo came to South Africa
in the 1990’s as a guest conductor for Cape Town
Opera on Mrs Marchio’s recommendation. Mrs
Marchio sang at the opening of the State Theatre
in Pretoria in a peformance of Traviata with
Adriana Maliponte, Alfredo Krause and Giorgio
Zancanaro.
Her musical role model is Renata Tebaldi. She
enjoys listening to tenors, sopranos and all other
types of classical music especially in live
performance.
Mr Marchio and Mrs Marchio met at the
Community Carnival in Cape Town while she
was still at school. Later, Mr Marchio proposed
to her in a letter while he was in Europe and she
was still in Cape Town. They lived in Italy for
20 years before settling in Cape Town once more.
She enjoys reading and knitting in her spare time.
If you see Mr Marchio walking in the corridor
with a pull over on, she has knitted it. She also
enjoys gardening.
Music has taken her to places such as Bagdad,
Spain, London, Corfu, Poland and Italy;
amongst others. Mr and Mrs Marchio’s careers
have been intertwined and they have enjoyed
duo performances in these places. They were
highly praised in a crit in the Classical Guitar
Magazine for their duo performance at St John’s
Square in London.
When asked where she would love to perform
if given the opportunity, she unequivocally
answered, “La Scala; the temple of opera”.
Mrs Marchio’s advice to our students is to listen
to all types of music to broaden their outlook.
Liam Burden
(Saxophone & Clarinet)
Mr Burden grew up in the central South African
town of Kimberley, thereafter he moved to
Stellenbosch where he completed a BMus as
well as a BMusHons degree cum laude at the
University of Stellenbosch. While at the
University of Stellenbosch Mr Burden studied
under Mr Darryl Walters; a founding member
of staff of the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre
when it opened its doors in 1986. He says that
Mr Walters was one of his main reasons for
deciding to study in Stellenbosch.
For the first semester of his Honours year, Mr
Burden was fortunate enough to be chosen to
partake in an exchange programme between the
University of Stellenbosch and West Virginia
University in the United States of America. While
there he received lessons from the acclaimed
saxophonist Dr Michael Ibrahim. It was thanks
to Dr Ibrahim’s tuition and immense skill that
Mr Burden’s eyes were opened to the world of
the contemporary classical saxophone and the
variety of possibilities that it possesses.
Mr Burden has received master classes from
numerous well known saxophonists including
Prof Douglas Masek, who is no stranger to Hugo
Lambrechts.
While studying in Stellenbosch and in the
USA, Mr Burden’s interest in conducting was
cultivated further by receiving lesson from Prof
Dr Corvin Matei (US) and Dr Mitchel Arnold
(WVU).
Mr Burden conducted the University of
Stellenbosch Symphonic Wind Ensemble on
numerous occasions and most recently conducted
the very successful fifteenth Concerto Festival
at Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre.
Mr Burden was one of six semi-finalists in the
prestigious SAMRO oversees scholarship
competition which was held in Johannesburg in
August this year.
Mr Burden’s further achievements this year have
been a distinction for the UNISA Performance
Licentiate on saxophone as well as being selected
for the second round of the Len van Zyl
conducting competition where he will be
receiving master classes from Maestro Victor
Yampolsky.
“Music is my life” says Mr Burden but he also
enjoys playing a game squash, spending time
with friends and going on outdoor adventures.
He recently returned from three weeks in
Zimbabwe where he travelled along the Kariba
Dam.
Mr Burden’s advice to students is: “whatever
you do, do it to the best of your abilities, but
above all…HAVE FUN!”
Shane Goodall
(Piano)
Mr Goodall grew up in East London. He first
began with organ lessons when he was 8 years
old and took lessons in a studio at the back of a
music shop.
Every week he had to walk past all the pianos
in the shop and during this time he started to
develop an interest in the piano. The image of a
performing pianist made such an impression on
him that he decided that he wanted to play the
piano. 3 years later, when his parents were able
to purchase a piano, he could start with lessons.
A highlight of his musical career was performing
the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no 1 with the
Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. A valuable
musical experience was taking part in the
International Piano Competition in Pretoria.
His role model is Evgeny Kissin because of his
extreme dedication, integrity and refined
performances. Emil Gilels performance of
Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata is his favourite
piano recording.
Mr Goodall visited Iticha, New York, where he
accompanied a gospel concert performance. He
taught English in Korea for a year. He enjoys
going to the gym in his spare time.
His advice to our students is “not to be overcome
by the drive for perfection but to remember that
communication through music must come
naturally”.

The theme for the String Beginners Concert
on 22 November 2011 was “Dreamworks
Presents” and the students and teachers came
dressed up in their favorite animated characters
from the latest movies.
All the string students from the music centre
featured in the final item of the concert,
Pachebel Canon in D. The stage was a
wonderful spectacle of animated color.
The castle set the fantasy backdrop and the
yellow sickle moon against a silver night sky
represented the dreamworks theme.
Parents worked hard with the decorations that
included balloons hanging from the railings
and smurf statues amidst the action on stage
that added to the atmosphere.
The party after the concert was held in the
string quart yard where the students could
enjoy dreamwork cupcakes.
Well done and thank you to all who participated
and contributed.
MARIA DU TOIT
Principal clarinettist of the Cape Philharmonic
Orchestra in Cape Town (since 2002), Maria du
Toit is not only recognised as a distinguished
orchestral musician, but indeed as one of South
Africa’s finest solo instrumentalists.
Her musical training began with piano lessons
at the age of 8, and at age 15 she started playing
the clarinet at the Hugo Lambrechts music centre
in Cape Town. From 1996 to 1999 she studied
music at the University of Stellenbosch under
the tutelage of Jim Reinders, where she was
awarded just about every possible study prize,
merit bursary and academic award available at
the university (including the Molteno prize for
the best first year music student and the
Konservatorium Stipendium for the best overall
music student).
After completing a bachelor’s degree in solo
clarinet cum laude (University of Stellenbosch)
and a Performer’s Licentiate with highest honours
(University of South Africa), she was accepted
to study at the Manhattan School of Music in
New York, where she studied clarinet under
David Krakauer (2000). She was appointed first
10
The Brass Department hosted a Brass
Ensemble Concert on 11 May in the
Auditorium. The Hugo Lambrechts Brass
Quintet performed alongside the Stellenbosch
University Brass Ensemble, under
the auspices of Sean Kierman, as well as
the Stellenbosch University Jazz Band,
conducted by Felicia Lesch.
The audience was entertained with brass
music from different genres and styles, of
which one of the highlights of the evening
was the performance of the Allegro from
the Double Trumpet Concerto by Antonio
Vivaldi with Yvonne-Marié Brand and
Boris Oppliger as soloists.
clarinet of the school’s two top orchestras, the
MSM Symphony and the MSM Chamber
Sinfonia. Moving on to Europe, she studied
with Bas de Jong at the Utrecht Conservatoire
(Netherlands, 2000/2001) and finally with Bulgarian
clarinet legend Petko Radev in Sofia
(Bulgaria, 2003, 2004, 2006).
2012 is off to a good start for Maria – having
already played five concerto performances by
the beginning of March! In February she had
three performances of the Stephenson Concertino
with the World Doctor’s Orchestra, and
shortly after that she played two performances
of the Mozart Concerto with the Johannesburg
Philharmonic Orchestra. For the latter she was
engaged a mere two days before the first
performance, as she had to stand in for Michael
Collins who fell ill.
April was a very busy month for Maria as she
performed six concerts in as many different cities
in Holland with the Netherlands Student Chamber
Orchestra (Mozart Concerto). In the same month
her new cd “Luminous Shade” was released. On
this exciting disc she teams up with the much
celebrated pianist Nina Schumann for the
TwoPianists record label to perform works by
Benjamin, Bozza, Martino, Rheinberger and
more. A definite MUST for every aspiring
clarinetist!!!
In June and July Maria was back in Holland for
three performances of the Nielsen Concerto with
the Atheneum Chamber Orchestra, and on the
28th of July she and Nina Schumann had a
recital in the Baxter Concert Hall in Cape Town,
performing the repertoire on their new cd.
In August Maria was once again featured as the
soloist in the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s
Symphony Season, playing the Solo de Concours
by Messager and Debussy’s Premiere Rhapsody
under the baton of the brilliant maestro Arjan
Tien.
Apart from her full-time position in the Cape
Philharmonic Orchestra, Maria du Toit is also a
part-time lecturer of clarinet at the University of
Stellenbosch and the University Of Cape Town
College Of Music. She lives in Cape Town with
her two children, Ivan and Sofia who also started
their music careers at Hugo Lambrechts, Ivan
on bassoon and Sofia on clarinet.
FRANSCHHOEK
MOUNTAIN 2012
CHAMBER MUSIC CAMP
This year’s camp at Franschhoek was probably
the best that Andrea and I have attended so
far. We were once again fortunate enough to
receive full scholarships to attend this
magnificent course in Chamber Music and
we would like to thank the organizers for
giving us this opportunity.
At this Course you learn to play as a group,
meet new people, and boost your self-confidence.
It was great meeting up with our old
friends from the previous years who come
from all over South Africa.
The teachers play a big role in what we do as
a group. They are like parents who care a lot
for everyone and look out for us. I look up to
the teachers from Franschhoek Chamber
festival because they show us and guide us
along the way to musicianship and how to
work as a team. The faculty included Becky
Stelzner, Sarah Acres, Barbara Kennedy and
Stuart Scott.
When we received our schedules I was
anxious to know who I would be playing with
and could not wait to introduce myself. The
music I got was good but challenging which
meant that I had practice much.
Early on in the course an incident happened
to two of the participants, they had a ‘bit of
a collision’ and Andrea was one of them. She
could not play due to the accident but she
became our no1 spectator and a wonderful
audience member. All the staff wrote a card
to wish “Matthew” and “Andrea” a speedy
recovery, just to show them they care and
were thinking of them.
At the Cabaret Evening I sang a song to put
a smile on their faces named “That’s what
friends are for” and people played amazing
pieces. This evening is always hilarious
because you never know what to expect as
all the participants of the course perform an
item of their choice.
At “Bonfire” (Or rather La Boma) we all
enjoyed supper together. To add to the already
super atmosphere, the brass section decided
to entertain us with a wonderful piece.
Pictures were taken of all of us together and
the evening ended with delicious hot chocolate
and marshmallows and plenty nice
conversation.
After the first concert on Saturday evening
we are always quite sad because, this is our
last evening together as a big family. We all
went to the field and looked up at the stars
and made the best of the night. It is sad that
it couldn’t last forever but, a part of us will
always stay at Franschhoek (till next year!)
Before our last concert we have a tradition
where we all go to town, buy milkshakes and
the matric campers have the privilege to give
a speech. I wanted to make a speech but I
have to wait my turn! Hope to see all my old
friends and more centre faces back there next
year.
The String Department had their annual Chamber Concert which was scheduled for two different
evenings with the junior pupils on the 18th of June and the seniors on the 19th. All the string
students had the opportunity to perform at the Auditorium.
This was both a bit nerve-wracking but also a very exciting experience. At the end of the day
- who would have not enjoyed such magnificent acoustics and such a warm audience consisting
of proud moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, brothers, sisters and friends!
Some of the young players had to be trained again on stage etiquette and had to get used to the
long walk on the big stage! Surely for many of them this event will stay as a lifetime memoryplaying
solo in a big concert hall for the first time!
Everyone strived to give their best performance and the buzz could be felt back-stage as well,
as friends were grouping together wishing each other good luck. It was an enjoyable evening
with music keeping us all warm on two cold evenings in June.
’n Kasteel, baie, baie liggies,’n paar
bekende Disney karakters en baie
opgewonde kinders, mammas, pappas,
oumas en oupas en natuurlik pragtige
musiek - wat meer wil mens hê vir
Kersfees!
Dít was Kersfees by die Musieksentrum
Hugo Lambrechts, Dinsdag 6 Desember.
The Tooth
Fairy will be
visiting
the
Woodwind
Department
soon
It is the norm to start a student as young as
4 / 5 on a string instrument or the piano, but
definitely NOT on a wind instrument!
The only logical reason for this is due to the
fact that one needs to be physically strong
enough to hold the instrument and have your
permanent teeth in order for the mouthpiece
to have something to rest on - or against!
However, some youngsters are so determined,
enthusiastic and sure of what they want to
do, that they can’t wait that long.
So for the first time we welcomed two little
clarinettists to our department: Keon Müller
(started at age 6) and Sofia Balkandjiev(5).
The only problem is that soon we’ll have
some missing teeth! Anybody perhaps have
falsies lying around...? Charlene Saayman
POLISH VIOLINIST KAROL LEGIERSKI
VISITS THE CENTRE
On Wednesday 6 June the polish violinst Karol
Legierski visited the Centre to present Master
classes as well as a concert which took place on
the Thursday evening, with José Dias as
accompanist.
Karol is the Concert Master of the Gorzow
Philharmonic in Poland. Works performed were
the Bach Chacconne, Vivaldi double Concerto,
Beethoven and duos. Marianne Cilliers joined
Karol and Josè on the Vivaldi.
The learners enjoyed both the master classes
and Concert and definitely learned a lot.
We really enjoyed having Karol and Marianne
with us, and friendships were made, and we as
the String Department would definitely host them
again!

SENIOR STRINGS
ORCHESTRA
IN CONCERT WITH
CT YOUTH CHOIR
Here is what the SSO cellist Warda Wannamaker had to say:
“On the 16th of May 2012 the Senior String Orchestra (SSO) of Hugo
Lambrechts teamed up with the Cape Town Youth Choir (the former
Pro Cantu choir) to present a musical experience that proved to be
of an exceptionally high musical standard as well as most enjoyable.
The choir was accompanied by the SSO in numbers from Vivaldi’s
“Gloria” that touched the hearts and reminded us just how much
music can uplift one’s spirit.
Mr Leon Starker and his choir had just briefly rehearsed with the
orchestra an hour before the concert but the passion and depth of the
music allowed both ensembles to “gel” together immediately.
The choir sang many familiar tunes and a fair number of technically
difficult vocal numbers showing their musical prowess and force.
Their singing was delivered with such sincerity and power that I am
sure it left the audience in awe. The soloists in the choir displayed
a range of emotion which reflects this choir’s commitment to excellence
and vocal exuberance.
The SSO did not disappoint either. They played beautifully, feeling
each other as an ensemble under the baton of Ms Valentina Vorster.
It was quite impressive to hear and see such young musicians having
such an intimate understanding of Corelli and Vivaldi. Everyone in
the orchestra moved and breathed together.
The evening was wonderful, enjoyable, but most importantly - it
show-cased the talents of the future musicians of South Africa. It also
showed just how important it is to keep the musical spirit and industry
alive and flourishing in South Africa. “
musical piece on the instrument of their choice
as well as a very short interview.
Well done to all these students!!!
Stranger in the (night) passage...
Most of you must have noticed a very tall, mostly
serious, young gentleman roaming the passages
of the Music Centre during the month of April.
Boris Oppliger, originally from Bern in Switzerland,
and sent here on an exchange organized
by SASTS, was introduced to us as a brass
player, however we had our doubts at first
because we are not used to brass players being
soooo quiet. The opposite was however made
very clear to us when he took out his trumpet
and played more than just a note or two!
Apart from being a trumpet player he is also a
developing conductor who immersed himself in
the various activities of the Centre.
While at the Centre, he taught some trumpet
students and rehearsed with the brass ensemble,
and was also afforded the opportunity by Ms
Ehlers to conduct and work with the Intermediate
String Orchestra at a few rehearsals. He took this
task very serious as one would always see him
with his head in a score, studying the parts and
practicing his conducting skills.
Being an avid performer he immediately joined
the Concert Wind Orchestra as well as the
Symphony Orchestra of the Centre.
Not only was he fully involved at the Centre,
but he also joined brass groups further afield,
namely the Stellenbosch University Brass
Ensemble as well as Cape Town Concert Brass.
The staff and students enjoyed his visit and found
his peculiar sense of humor and character very
entertaining. We would like to extend a big thank
to him for all his hard work and assistance and
wish him only the best for all future endeavors!
