VMES ObjectivesThe Veterinary Medical ExperimentStation (VMES) supports a wide rangeof research that impacts on almost allaspects of our lives, from the food weeat and the clothes we wear, to ourphysical, emotional, and economichealth, to the quality of ourenvironment. VMES research includesefforts to improve the productivity andhealth of poultry and livestock, tobetter the quality of life for companionanimals, and to improve public healththrough disease surveillance. Thisyear’s research is profiled in our 1998-1999 VMES Annual Report.VMES funds are intended to helpdevelop extramurally funded researchprograms at the College of VeterinaryMedicine. In addition, VMES fundsare used to support short-term appliedresearch that directly benefits thehealth of animals and livestock inGeorgia. Projects supported by VMESfunds are evaluated for scientificmerit, importance to animal health,consideration for experimental animalwelfare, and their roles in meeting theresearch objectives of the VMES.These objectives are as follows:• To improve the health and productivityof domestic livestock, poultry, fish, andother income-producing animals andwildlife through research.• To assist in preventing diseaseepidemics by providing laboratoryresources and highly skilled scientificpersonnel.• To assist in protecting human healththrough the control of animal diseasestransmissible to man.• To improve the health of companionanimals, which serve to enrich the livesof humankind.• To train new scientists in animal healthresearch in order to provide continuityand growth in this area of veterinarymedicine.2
