WHEREVERTHERE’SWATERsponsored byPesda Touring Mini-GuideUPPER LYON#12INTRODUCTION The peaceful upper glen is far moreopen than the gorge lower down.Glen Lyon | ©iStockphoto.com Jeroen KloppenburgWATER LEVEL Obvious at the start – the shingle rapidsneed to be floatable.ACCESS From the road up the glen, the best start is wherethe Allt Conait joins, near to where the road leaves up toLoch Daimh (529 445). Egress is where the road is alongsidethe river, before the obvious rocky gorge (700 472).CAMPSITES & ACCOMMODATION The nearest are atAberfeldy or Killin.DESCRIPTION From Loch Lyon, going downstream, thefirst 11km brings you to the junction with the Allt Conaitand a carry around two subsidiary dams, the small Stronuichreservoir, and slab rapids below it. Where the burn joins, waterincreases, and there follows some 18km or so of delightfulriver to where the whitewater stretch commences. Access canbe difficult due to high wire fences, and egress should alwaysbe planned with care at a roadside stretch.Contributor: Eddie PalmerWWW.CANOEKAYAK.CO.UKExcerpt adapted from Scottish Canoe Touring, an SCA Canoe & KayakGuide ISBN 0954706137, published by Pesda Press, Caernarfon.
