Two-Bit started tltuck in his shirttail, but sto<strong>pp</strong>ed himself in time; he jufli<strong>pp</strong>ed up the collar of his black leather jacket and lit a cigarette.The Socs didn't even seem to see us."Cheny, Marcia, listen to us ... " the handsome blackhairedSac with the dark sweater began. '--Johnny was breathing heavily and I noticed he wasstaring at the Sac's hand. He was wearing three heavyrings. I loo~ed quickly at Johnny, an idea dawning on me.I remembered that it was a blue Mustang that had pulledup beside the vacant lot and that Johnny's face had beencut up by someone wearing rings ...The Sac's voice broke into my thoughts: ". . . justbecause we got a little drunk last time ... "Cheny looked mad. "A little? You can reeling and passingout in the streets 'a little'? Bob, I told you, I'm nevergoing out with you while you're drinking, and I mean it.Too many things could ha<strong>pp</strong>en while you're drunk. " Hesnatched up an empty bottle, busted off the end, and gaveit to me, then reached in his back pocket and fli<strong>pp</strong>ed outhis switchblade. "Try it, pal.""No!" Cherry cried. "Stop it!" She looked at Bob."We'll ride home with you. Just wait a minute.""Why?" Two-Bit demanded. "We ain't scared of them."Cheny shuddered. "I can't stand fights ... 1can't standthem ... "Ipulled her to one side. "I couldn't use this," I said,dro<strong>pp</strong>ing the pop bottle. "I couldn't ever cut anyone .... " 1had to tell her that, because I'd seen her eyes when Two-Bit flicked out his switch."I know," she said quietly, "but we'd better go withthem. Ponyboy ... 1 mean ... if 1 see you in the hall atschool or someplace and don't say hi, well, it's not persona1oranythimg, b ut ... "
