Victory Over Sin 17washed, – [cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ] – but you were sanctified, --[separated from sin and separated for God’s use] – but you were justified –[declared righteous by a holy God] – in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in theSpirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11). Our situation is not unique! Someonehas already faced our problem victoriously!(2) God will give us the resources to cope with all temptationA faithful God does not expect us to do what we cannot do – He supplies theneeded strength. If we say, “I know what I must do, but I just can’t do it,” whatthen can we do?Do you remember the story of the battle between the Children of Israel andAmalek? When it was time for the battle, Moses said, “I will station myself onthe top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand…So it came about when Mosesheld his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalekprevailed. But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it underhim, and he sat on it and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side andone on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.” After this battle,we are told that, “Moses built an altar, and named it, `The Lord is My Banner’”(Exodus 17:9-15).If we truly believe that we can’t do what we should, then we need help fromthe people of God. We need someone to hold up our weak arms, to help uswalk a straight path, to comfort, to give strength, to pray for us. But if wesay, “I can’t” and let it go at that, we are calling into question the integrity ofGod’s character or the validity of our own faith. Why is it so essential for us to believe the victory over our sin is possible?Simply because no one can win a war he believes can’t be won! To go tobattle believing in advance that there can be no permanent victory, is tosuccumb to the enemy before the campaign gets under way.We Christians have often conceded to the enemy by assuming that some sinscannot be dislodged. Such unbelief breeds pessimism, disobedience, anddespair. The teaching of the New Testament is that all things are possiblewith God to those who believe.Name your sin right now and say, “Thank You, God, that deliverance from it ispossible!” God has had a vast amount of experience in delivering His peoplefrom temptation. Peter wrote, “The Lord knows how to rescue the godly fromtemptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment from the Day ofJudgment” (2 Peter 2:9).The questions we face are: (1) Are we prepared to believe that God is good?(2) That we are a responsible person? And, (3) that we can win victory overthat stubborn sin?Getting Practical
