<strong>Econ</strong> <strong>1123</strong>-<strong>995</strong> - <strong>C<strong>ou</strong>rse</strong> <strong>Syllabus</strong> – Fall 2012Instructor: Li SuOffice:Hester Hall 211Office H<strong>ou</strong>rs:By appointmentE-mail: suli_econ@<strong>ou</strong>.<strong>edu</strong><strong>C<strong>ou</strong>rse</strong> Overview: <strong>Econ</strong> <strong>1123</strong>-<strong>995</strong> is an online version <strong>of</strong> Principles <strong>of</strong> Microeconomics. Thisc<strong>ou</strong>rse will introduce students to the f<strong>ou</strong>ndational terms, concepts, and economicmodels they will need in intermediate microeconomics and microeconomicsrelated business c<strong>ou</strong>rses. The c<strong>ou</strong>rse will cover six units: the Supply andDemand Model, Consumer Choice Theory, Production Theory, PerfectCompetition, Monopolies, and Imperfect Competition.To be successful in this c<strong>ou</strong>rse, students must be pr<strong>of</strong>icient in arithmetic with<strong>ou</strong>ta calculator, as they are not allowed one during exams; college level algebra;graphing techniques using a Cartesian Plane; and spoken and written Americanor British English. A working knowledge <strong>of</strong> basic Calculus is helpful but notnecessary.This c<strong>ou</strong>rse is self-directed and self-paced. Moreover, alth<strong>ou</strong>gh this is an onlinec<strong>ou</strong>rse, y<strong>ou</strong> must sit for the mid-term and final examinations on campus atthe dates and times specified on the sch<strong>edu</strong>le. Additionally, all assignmentsand quizzes related to material covered on the midterm examination must becompleted and submitted to the instructor by the date and time <strong>of</strong> the midtermexamination. Likewise all material covered after the midterm must be submittedto the instructor by the time and date <strong>of</strong> the final examination.The mid-term will cover the first three units <strong>of</strong> Dr. Holmes’ MicroeconomicTheory Workbook. The final will be comprehensive.LearningObjectives:To help facilitate y<strong>ou</strong>r self-paced learning I will provide detailed learningobjectives for each unit. I will post these to D2L.<strong>C<strong>ou</strong>rse</strong> Res<strong>ou</strong>rces: All homework assignments and c<strong>ou</strong>rse supplements will be posted to the D2Lpage for this c<strong>ou</strong>rse. Online quizzes will be given and graded thr<strong>ou</strong>gh D2L.Required Texts: Microeconomic Theory Workbook (3 rd Edition) by Alexander Holmes (see OUbookstore); Microeconomics by Colander (8 th , 7 th , or 6 th Edition) (available atAmazon.com)Quizzes &Homework:I will post six quizzes to D2L, one for each unit from the Microeconomic TheoryWorkbook. The quizzes will give y<strong>ou</strong> an opportunity to check y<strong>ou</strong>r level <strong>of</strong>understanding <strong>of</strong> the assigned readings. Y<strong>ou</strong> will have two opportunities to takeeach quiz, and I will record y<strong>ou</strong>r highest score. Y<strong>ou</strong> will be allowed twenty


minutes to take each quiz. If y<strong>ou</strong> are not familiar with taking quizzes on D2L,y<strong>ou</strong> sh<strong>ou</strong>ld come to my <strong>of</strong>fice during <strong>of</strong>fice h<strong>ou</strong>rs for a tutorial.The homework assignments, on the other hand, are an opportunity for y<strong>ou</strong> topractice skills and review concepts presented in the textbooks. They will alsogive y<strong>ou</strong> an opportunity to practice the kinds <strong>of</strong> problems y<strong>ou</strong> will see on anexamination. Y<strong>ou</strong> will have two kinds <strong>of</strong> homework assignments: onlinehomework assignments and paper assignments. I will provide instructions witheach assignment so y<strong>ou</strong> will know which is which. For the paper homeworkassignments that are to be completed as hardcopies, y<strong>ou</strong> may mail y<strong>ou</strong>rassignments to me at the <strong>Econ</strong>omics Department or deliver them by hand to my<strong>of</strong>fice.On homework assignments only, y<strong>ou</strong> may work with other students; howevery<strong>ou</strong> must submit an original copy <strong>of</strong> y<strong>ou</strong>r own work. One gr<strong>ou</strong>p copy or exactduplicate copies <strong>of</strong> gr<strong>ou</strong>p work are not acceptable. If y<strong>ou</strong> work with otherstudents on a homework assignment, y<strong>ou</strong> must write the names <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> theindividuals with whom y<strong>ou</strong> collaborated.Grades: Y<strong>ou</strong> can earn up to 510 points in this c<strong>ou</strong>rse (see table below).Letter Grades:The mid-term examination will cover the first half <strong>of</strong> material, units 1 thr<strong>ou</strong>gh 3in Dr. Holmes’ Microeconomic Theory Workbook.
