The Cancer Research Center 

At CRC, we are fighting cancer, hoping you won’t need to. Our extensive 

cancer research is funded in large part by the citizens and businesses of central Missouri 

who, like yourselves, desire a solution to this lethal 

disease. Because of the extensive cancer research that is being performed all over the 

world, including right here in Columbia, we are going way 

beyond poisoning, radiating, and cutting out cancer cells. We are 

developing procedures to stop cancer before it ever starts and techniques to treat it that 

avoid destroying good cells.

cancer deaths by earlier detection, novel therapies, 

and identification of environmental and nutritional 

components that reduce tumor initiation.

Message from the Director 

Cancer Research Center’s greatest assets are its Board, volunteers, donors,and staff. 

Research would not be possible without the assistance of our donors. Whether donating to the Jim 

Kidwell Memorial Gala, responding to our annual mailing, or sending a memorial or tribute to a loved one, 

the dollars given to the Cancer Research Center are spent in our laboratory in Columbia, Missouri. 

Cancer Research Center staff are not only dedicated to the research, but also interested in stretching 

our funds as far as possible. Dr. Abraham Eisenstark, CRC Research Director, is the best example of this type 

of thinking. In tribute to his many years of commitment to cancer research and Cancer Research Center, Dr. 

Eisenstark will be the 2011 Jim Kidwell Memorial Gala honoree. We are delighted to recognize Dr. Abe for 

all that he has done for the cancer research community. 

As an example of his love for research, Dr. Abe established the Roma Eisenstark Scholars program. 

Due to his own generosity, students come to our laboratory and are given a research project of their own. 

They are graduate students, undergraduate students, and even high school students. Read more about our 

Roma Eisenstark Scholars on page 8. 

The CRC volunteer committee comes together every year to plan and execute the gala, which is our 

one annual fundraiser. They sell tickets, tables, and sponsorships. They solicit donations for the silent and 

live auctions. They help set up before the event and clean up after it is over. The Jim Kidwell Memorial Gala 

would not be possible without this dedicated group of friends. Read more about the 2010 event, honoring 

long time CRC volunteer, Myrtle Rapp, and see photographs on page 16. 

Behind every successful organization is solid leadership, and CRC is no exception. Our Board of 

Trustees is a diverse group of individuals who donate their time, expertise, and financial resources to CRC. 

They truly have CRC’s best interest at heart and are dedicated to helping CRC accomplish its mission.

Meet the CRC Staff 

A braham Eisenstark 

is the Research Director 

of the CRC. Previously, 

he was a Byler Distinguished 

Professor and 

Director of the Division 

of Biological Sciences, 

University of Missouri - 

Columbia. He has served 

as Program Director of 

Molecular Biology Section, 

National Science 

Foundation, Washington, 

DC. His career includes 

years of collaborative 

research at other institutions, including universities 

at Copenhagen, Denmark; Leicester,England; Paris, 

France; Leiden, Netherlands; and Brookhaven National 

Laboratories. He is a native of Kansas City, MO. He 

received his BS, MS, and PhD. in Microbiology from 

the University of Illinois. He is married to the former 

Joan Ragsdell of Columbia and is the father of three 

children. 

A lycia McGee 

joined the CRC team 

in July of 2008. She is 

dedicated to managing 

the database, 

photographing special 

events and lab research 

projects along with 

designing the Annual 

Report. She was born in 

Mexico, MO where her 

father still resides. She 

graduated from Centralia 

High School and earned 

her Bachelor’s degree at Columbia College. Through 

the years, she found her passion for photography after 

the loss of her mother to breast cancer. Since then, 

she has worn the hats of an artist, a photographer and 

an office manager and is proud to combine all of her 

talents at the Cancer Research Center. She resides on 

a quiet little street in southern Columbia.

She has extensive

Elks Lodge and Cosmopolitan Luncheon Club. 

She is an active member of the Columbia Chamber of 

Commerce where she has Chaired the Chamber Ambassadors, 

as well as various committees. She was a 

2003 recipient of the 40 under 40 in Columbia Award 

and is a graduate of Leadership Columbia. She earned 

a BFA degree from William Woods College. Marnie 

lives in Fulton with her husband Michael and their 

children, Bailey, Brian, Dustin & Austin.

She is the eldest of three; her family now resides in 

Lawrence,KS.

is the youngest of six 

children. Jacki attended 

Jefferson City High 

School and graduated 

in 1984. While in high 

school, she worked on a 

research project on embryo 

transfer. Jacki attended 

CMSU and there 

she met her husband 

of 25 years. They have 

four girls ages 24, 22, 9 and 7. Along with being a 

homemaker for 19 years, Jacki was an advocate for 

the disabled. Since then she has returned to her love 

of research at the Cancer Research Center.

came to CRC as the

Fellow. He now serves as 

Senior Investigator. He 

received his BS in Bacteriology 

at the University 

of Wisconsin, studying 

regulation of Vitamin 

B12 production by 

Salmonella enterica 

(serovar Typhimurium) 

and interning at Upjohn 

Pharmaceuticals. He earned a MA and PhD in Microbiology 

from the University of Illinois, during which 

time he held an NIH Cell and Molecular Biology 

Training Grant Fellowship to research chronic viral 

infections. He later studied at Washington University 

in St. Louis. At the CRC he is conducting research 

to characterize and develop therapeutic Salmonella 

enterica as a treatment for prostate cancer. 

D r. C hengzhi Wang 

is from China. He 

attended Medical School 

at Southeast University, 

China, and graduated in 

2006. Later he turned to 

bioscience to pursue his 

Ph.D. at Peking University 

Health Science Center in 

Microbiology since 2007. 

In November, 2009, 

with the support of the 

Chinese government, he 

came to America as a visiting 

student and joined the 

CRC. At the CRC, he is working on the project of therapeutic 

Salmonella enterica as a treatment for prostate 

cancer along with his colleagues. He is the only son of 

his parents and married his wife in Beijing in 2009.

This has been another significant year of research 

at CRC! Thank you, generous supporters!!! You are, 

indeed, an important factor in this progress. 

As reviewed elsewhere in this Annual Report, 

we have genetically engineered bacterial organisms 

so that they destroy tumor cells without harming normal 

cells. 

We are now in the process of testing the ability 

of these genetically engineered bacteria to reduce 

tumor size and substantially increase life expectancies 

of our mice with prostate cancer. To accomplish 

this, we are vigorously seeking the necessary funds 

from granting agencies, capital investors and as always, 

from our generous donors. 

In addition to our in-house research, CRC is 

always proud of its student scholarship program. As in the past, our high school and college undergraduate 

trainees, with their passion for careers in cancer research, are destined for positions in the best laboratories. 

These talented students are now preparing for careers in medical research at MIT, Mount Holyoke, Rice and 

UMC. Note their bright faces in the Scholars to Scientists section of this Annual Report.

Research Director’s Message 

Ps. Each of us has lost a family member or friend to cancer. A warm way to remember that person is with a 

memorial gift. As an example, I have established the Roma Eisenstark Cancer Research Memorial Fund, to 

be used for student scholarships, laboratory assistance, and for support of speakers for the Roma Eisenstark 

Memorial Lectureship in Cancer Research, UMC. 

Previous Roma Eisenstark memorial lecturers have included Nobel Prize winners Harald Zur Hausen 

and Howard Termin. Other speakers were from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Yale, U.Calif.-Berkeley, U. 

Chicago, Stanford, Scripps Research Inst., Human Virology, Ludwig Inst.-San Diego, Dana-Farber/Harvard 

Cancer Center, and Cancer Genetics Program/NIH. 

The speaker for 2010 was Professor Janet Butel, Distinguished Professor, Baylor College of Medicine. 

Dr. Butel’s interest in cancer research started when she was an undergraduate in Dr. Eisenstark’s laboratory.

Elizabeth Choe 

declared Biological Engineering as her major last year at MIT. Aside from course 

work, she is working in Professor Bhatia’s Laboratory for Microscale Regenerative 

Technologies on a project similar to the one she studied at CRC, which involved 

the improvement in effeciency of gold nanoparticles in the treatment of cancer. 

She also enjoys her music and continues to play in the symphony along with her 

chamber group. 

Gloria Lee 

has been examining the invasion rates of Erwinia Carotovora and E. herbicola 

on PC-3M Prostate tumor cells as a Roma Eisenstark Scholar during the 

summer of 2010. Gloria is a Junor at Mount Holyoke College and has been 

involved in cancer research with CRC since the summer of 2006. She is currently 

pursuing a career in biomedical research. 

Kristin Morrison 

daughter of Clark and Susan Morrison from St Louis, is a senior biology major at 

the University of Missouri. She has been researching at the CRC since October 

2007. Kristen is collaborating with UMC professor Heide Schatten to investigate 

how our attenuated bacterial therapy kills cancer cells by destruction of mitochondria. 

Next year, she’s going to medical school and plans to supplement her MD 

with a Master’s in Public Health. 

Meredith Norfleet 

is a member of the Discovery Fellows Program. She is from the small town of 

Houstonia, Missouri and is a graduate of Northwest High School. She is majoring 

in biology at the University of Missouri Columbia. 

Mark Won 

is a Junior at Hickman High School. He is the son of Yonggumn Won and Hyunmee 

Hong. Mark was introduced to CRC due to his interest in science and 

microbiology. Mark’s goal is to become a patent lawyer in science and law.

CRC Retools in the Fight 

Fine wine, cheese and good friends only get better with age. Microscopes on the other hand, age like rock 

stars. Our previous microscope faired very well providing better than two decades of faithful service before 

the optics, the heart of a microscope, degraded to the point where replacement was unavoidable. The 

microscope was so far behind current optical prowess that it was not prudent to make the repairs. In short, 

it was time for an upgrade. 

Thanks to the generous support of our donors the 

Cancer Research Center was able to welcome a 

“state of the art” Olympus BX51 Fluorescence 

microscope into the lab this fall. For those unfamiliar, 

a fluorescence microscope uses special 

filters to select precise wavelengths of light, which 

are used to excite special dyes and cause them 

to fluoresce or glow. Since each filter is selective 

for a different wavelength range, we can stain 

tumor cells with several dyes and then view different 

components of the tumor cell separately. 

This allows us to get many times the information 

from a single tumor sample and then overlay the 

information for a complete 3D picture. Images 

are captured by a digital camera and supporting 

software capable of real-time recording of both 

still and time-lapse images. These publication- 

ready images are already finding their way into 

our research reports and grant proposals. 

Overall, the BX51 was a stand-out choice due 

to it’s sturdy construction, user-friendly design, 

outstanding support services and the fact that it 

is easily upgradeable should our needs change in 

the future. Ensuring this “rock star” will be on the 

charts for years to come.

Current Research 

On Ta r g e T: DevelOping a c a n c e r T r e a T m e n T T h a T h i T s T h e m a r k 

Let’s face it. The current gold standards of cancer treatment, chemotherapy and radiation, are really bad 

shots. Yes, they kill cancer cells but they also hit all of the other living, normal cells and tissues in range. 

If these treatments were police academy recruits they would never see graduation day. At the Cancer Research 

Center we think it’s high time for some new recruits. 

So, we started our search from the beginning and found that the idea of recruiting bacteria as a cancer treatment 

has been steadily gaining momentum for sometime. Way back in the early 1900’s William B. Coley 

for example observed that sarcoma patients who acquired a severe Clostridium infection fared better after 

surgery than patients who did not. In the years that followed Dr. Coley developed a cancer treatment regimen 

involving bacteria cell walls at what is now Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (Coley, 1929). 

Fast forward sixty years and treatment with a non-pathogenic strain of Bacillus bacteria is being used to treat 

superficial bladder carcinoma in patients with complete tumor responses in more than 60% of the patients 

treated (Friberg, 1993). Early in the new millennia prostate cancer research joined the scene when researchers 

at Yale developed a strain of Salmonella typhimurium dubbed VNP20009 that preferentially killed prostate 

cancer cells. Initial results were promising but Yale researchers ran into toxicity issues with the strain in 

phase 1 clinical trials. 

Even stalemated the proposition is exciting. If Yale researchers had made it to phase 1 trials with a tempered 

pathogenic strain we were likely sitting on the answer. The Cancer Research Center is fortunate to possess a 

very unique resource in the form of several thousand non-pathogenic archival Salmonella strains all slightly 

different genetically. These strains have been stored so long (50+ years) they have naturally lost the ability 

to cause disease. In near starvation conditions and with no mammalian host in sight, these strains dumped 

their pathogenic genes in an effort to streamline themselves for survival. Their genetic losses are our gain. 

ca n c e r Th e r a p y i n T h e ma k i n g (2004-p r e s e n T) 

In 2004, we began combing our archival Salmonella collection for star recruits. Each selected Salmonella 

strain was tested for tumor targeting talent by incubating the strain with cancer cells. We found that within 

30 minutes the non-toxic Salmonella attached to the cancer cells and did not let go. Even better was that 

the Salmonella seemed to know the difference between a normal and a cancerous cell and only attached to 

and killed the cancerous cells. This was the first promise of a smart, targeted cancer treatment using bacteria 

from the CRC. 

In 2005, we upped the ante and started running time course experiments to gauge the behavior and tumor 

destruction talents of the Salmonella over time. These studies revealed a unique advantage over Yale’s 

VNP20009. Unlike VNP20009, our naturally mellowed Salmonella did not break open the cell while destroying 

it. A small but crucial detail as loose cell contents are a major “red flag” in the body and get the 

immune system working overtime. While activation of the immune system is desirable in cancer treatment, 

too zealous of a response can be disastrous for the patient. 

2006 began the painstaking process of fine-tuning the therapeutic strain to further enhance the strain’s 

nontoxic nature and natural tumor targeting talent. During this time one of the several strains we initially 

investigated became a clear frontrunner for the therapeutic Salmonella title. This strain became known as 

CRC 2631. 

2007 brought hard-won approval to test CRC2631 for toxicity and tumor targeting ability in mice.


Deeming our research worthy to procede beyond lab-cultured cells, this approval was a major victory 

and milestone on the way to human clinical trials. We acquired mouse facilities at the University of Missouri 

Columbia and determined safe and effective dosage levels to treat the primary and secondary tumors 

TRAMP mice develop. We were excited to find that the TRAMP mice easily tolerated doses of over 100 

million therapeutic CRC2631 bacteria. In contrast, just 10 non-therapeutic or Salmonella as found in the 

wild will kill a mouse within three days. 

Following promising toxicity trials we turned our attention to tracking the bacteria in the mouse. Testing 

which carried over into 2008 repeatedly showed that within 24-48 hours our therapeutic Salmonella 

was eliminated from the body of TRAMP mice and only retained in the tumor. We also continued to see 

CRC2631 target cancer cells 1,000 times over normal cells in the mouse even as we made genetic changes 

to fine-tune the bacteria’s performance. 

In 2009, we developed dosage protocols and conducted therapeutic studies to determine the dosage of 

CRC2631 therapeutic Salmonella to give to the TRAMP mice to inhibit, reduce, and/or eliminate their tumors. 

Normally, TRAMP mice do not make it to one year of age due to their predisposition to produce large 

prostate tumors at a young age (3-6 months). The goal is to have them live to a ripe old age, which for this 

species of mice is about two years. These studies continued into 2010. 

A second critical objective was reached in 2009 with the development of a quantitative assay to measure 

the number and type of cancerous cells that our therapeutic Salmonella preferentially attack. Using a Fluorescence 

Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) system we are able to count individual cancer cells and determine 

how effectively our bacterial therapy attaches and destroys them. This new assay helps us identify bacterial 

strains with improved cancer-targeting capabilities and to determine exactly how proficient the bacteria 

are at targeting different types of cancer. We now use this system to identify strains with enhanced cancertargeting 

capabilities and will use it to screen for strains attracted to other cancer types such as melanoma, 

pancreatic, breast and colon.

Cancer research focuses on the three requirements for treating cancer: 1) Early Detection. Cancer detected 

early is treatable and almost always results in complete recovery. 2) Targeted Treatment. If you can target a 

cancer-killing drug therapy to the cancer cells but spare normal cells, you can administer powerful, effective 

drugs at much lower dosages, killing the cancer while minimizing or eliminating unwanted side effects. 3) 

New, Effective Chemotherapy. Although different types of cancer result in the same problem (uncontrollably 

growing tumors), each cancer type is different and reacts differently to anti-cancer drugs. 

In 2010, an estimated 217,730 men will be newly diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States and 

about 32,050 men will die from the disease. Prostate 

cancer is associated with aging and occurs in a latent 

or clinical form in 30-40% of men by age 40-50. Prostate 

cancer cases increase substantially in men over 50 

years of age. While hormone chemotherapy is often effective 

during the initial stages of cancer development, 

most men develop hormone-resistant cancer within 

two years after treatment of the clinical disease and 

metastatic lesions are difficult to cure. Therefore, new 

approaches are desperately needed. 

Building on the hard work and success of the last six 

years, in 2010 we performed experiments to test the 

effects of our non-toxic bacterial cancer targeting (BCT) 

therapy on the immune systems of our TRAMP mice. 

These experiments gave groups of prostate tumorbearing 

mice a range of Salmonella doses weekly over 

a period of 12 weeks and measured the effects of BCT 

therapy up to 24 hours after each dose. None of the 

mice dosed at our therapeutic levels died during this 

study and immunological tests for inflammation after 

repeated doses were negative, demonstrating that our 

BCT therapy could be given repeatedly to immunocompetent 

mouse models without causing an immune 

reaction. Confirmation that our BCT therapy does not 

cause an immune reaction after repeated doses is an 

important hurdle on the way to human clinical studies, 

and shows that we can dose a patient with BCT therapy 

that can carry a drug cocktail or other anti-cancer drug 

to the heart of tumors, maximizing their therapeutic effect. 

(Figure 1) 

In the summer of 2010 we performed our first attachment 

of gold nanoparticles to our BCT therapy, demonstrating 

that we could attach nanoparticle therapeutics 

to our Salmonella that could serve as a target for specifically 

destroying tumors with lasers and could eventually 

be modified to carry drugs for release at the tumor

site. Nanoparticle work, including testing different nanoparticles and drug formulations, will continue in 

2011 and improve the cancer-killing effectiveness of our BCT therapy. (Figure 2) In addition to carrying additional 

cancer therapies to the tumor site, nanoparticles can also be used as an important cancer-detection 

diagnostic tool as they are easily detected in the body and will be used to confirm that the therapy being 

used is properly concentrating at the tumor site inside our animal cancer model and eventually, our clinical 

cancer patient. 

Work on the BCT therapy to date has attracted the interest of other cancer research facilities, including 

Immunophotonics, Inc. The CRC has entered into a collaboration with Immunophotonics to determine if 

BCT therapy can be successfully combined with Immunophotonics, Inc. therapeutic technologies that are 

already in FDA clinical testing for use in the USA and being successfully used in clinics in Peru. We are 

continuing this research partnership in 2011. 

We also continue to search for and select bacterial 

strains with improved targeting capabilities. In 2010, 

visiting CRC Scholar Dr. Chengzhi Wang developed 

an improved protocol for generating strains 

that target prostate cancers in our animal prostate 

cancer model and is continuing his work to make 

a better targeting strain in 2011. Dr. Kazmierczak, 

with the assistance of our CRC student interns, is 

selecting and screening new bacterial species for 

their ability to attach to human prostate cancer 

cells in culture. (Figure 3) This work is expected to 

continue throughout 2011 and will yield important 

information about the nature of bacterial attraction 

to cancer cells and tumor masses. As strain generation 

progresses we will also be looking for stains with 

targeting ability for melanoma , pancreatic, colon 

and breast cancers. This work will be done in tissue 

culture and will lay the groundwork for approval for 

animal model studies of these cancer types in the 

future.

Each year we build on the success of previous years 

as we continue the development of a bacterial cancer therapy. It seems like only yesterday the idea of scouring 

our unique collection of archival Salmonella for a new weapon against cancer was born. Thanks to our

on the way to becoming an effective treatment in the fight against cancer.

That’s how Myrtle Rapp, seemingly, always started her statements. So, let us tell you something 

about the lady we loved so much and gave us all more than any of us could have ever imagined. 

As her grandkids, we remember her as “the best grandma in the world” who would spend 

“countless nights around the old chopping block spreading her many words of wisdom.” She 

was “the sweetest, most caring person in the world” and “words couldn’t describe the way she 

had influence over so many lives”. She was “full of Tiger Spirit” and “Gillespie Bridge’s own 

celebrity.” 

As her children, we recall, “You need to establish the difference between your family, friends 

and coworkers. Years later I realized what she said, family are friends, friends are family and her 

coworkers and patients were friends and family, too.” “She was beautiful, generous and always 

sharing” and “Mom was so many different things.” 

“My wonderful wife loved to garden, can the produce and cook. She was the best cook in the 

Midwest. She never learned to swim or ride a bike due to living on the farm. She became a 

good water skier and snow skier. She would ride a motorcycle with me going 100 miles an 

hour, thru the Rocky Mountains and Old Mexico. She was always prepared for snow trips, river 

trips on the Mississippi, Missouri, and Arkansas Rivers. And, you had to take what she had prepared 

whether you wanted to or not. 

She loved her kids, grandsons, and great grandsons. 

If Myrtle knew you, she loved you and 

always had a helping hand for everyone. She 

talked to her flowers and her garden plants as she 

was sitting in the garden working with them in 

her night gown!! She loved life. Thanks 

Myrtle for a great life.

The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both men and 

women may belong. Worldwide, there are approximately one million members under the General Grand 

Chapter. Eastern Star is a social order comprised of persons with spiritual values but it is not a religion. 

Its appeal rests in the true beauty of the refreshing and character-building lessons that are so sincerely 

portrayed in its ritualistic work. A deep fraternal bond exists between its members. It is the wholesome 

relationship of sisterly and brotherly love brought about through high principles exemplified in their lives 

which makes them near and dear to each other. While this is an Order composed of people of deep 

spiritual convictions, it is open to all faiths, except no faith. The personal welfare of their members is vital 

to all of those in the Eastern Star and it is considered a privilege to help another member whenever they 

can. 

The stated purposes of the organization are: Charitable, Educational, Fraternal and Scientific; but there is 

much more to it than that. Dr. Rob Morris, the Poet Laureate of Masonry, founded the Order using beautiful 

and inspiring biblical examples of heroic conduct and moral values. These portray the noble principles 

which should adorn the personal loves of Eastern Star members. Eastern Star strives to take good people 

and through uplifting and elevating associations of love and service, and through precept and example, 

build an Order which is truly dedicated to charity, truth and loving kindness. 

Concrete evidence of the charitable nature of the organization as it affects others is the millions of dollars 

which have been raised within the membership to support national, jurisdictional, and local charities. The 

Order of the Easter Star has contributed over $700,000 to the Cancer Research Center to fund research into 

the causes and cure of cancer.

Opportunities for Giving 

Donations to the Cancer Research Center, unless 

otherwise directed, go to three main funds. 

Eisenstark Scholarships and Interships. 

In conjunction with our research mission, Dr. Eisenstark 

engages promising students in order to enhance 

their scientific backgrounds. We have programs for 

high school students, undergraduate and graduate 

students and postdoctoral fellows. Each category has 

opportunities to participate in our research to one 

degree or another. For more information, contact Dr.

Ray Freese Memorial Fellowship in Cancer Research. 

This Fellowship supports a postdoctoral scientist who 

engages in basic research at CRC in the development 

of a professional career finding ways to reduce cancer 

deaths. Dr. Robert A. Kazmiercazk is the most recent 

Raymond W. Freese Fellow at the CRC. 

The Pamela Dunn Legacy of Hope. 

Due to her dedication and contributions to cancer 

research, the CRC’s Dr. Pamela Dunn Legacy of Hope 

was created in her honor. The legacy is used to recognize 

individuals, businesses and foundations who 

demonstrate a tangible interest in supporting the CRC. 

Income from these funds provide for instruments, 

books, and support for our scientists who receive fellowships, 

stipends and other financial help based on 

their training and experience. 

We are very fortunate to receive tremendous support 

from fraternal organizations around the state. The 

Fraternal Order of the Eagles, The Order of the Eastern 

Star, and the Cosmopolitan Club of Columbia have 

for years generously supported our work. Friends of 

the CRC frequently obtain their employer’s help to 

make outright donations or participate in a company’s 

matching funds programs. When you participate in our 

annual Jim Kidwell Memorial Gala, whether by buying 

a table or sponsoring the event, your contribution goes 

to our biggest fund raiser of the year. Donations can 

be made through our once yearly direct mail appeal, 

through our web site’s paypal page or with memorial 

donation in memory of a loved one. An additional way 

you can contribute to our research is through a simple 

bequest in your will. 

Your generous bequest can bring us all closer to the 

day when the terrible disease of cancer is finally eradicated 

from our society. It doesn’t matter whether your 

bequest to the Cancer Research Center is quite small 

or very large. All bequests have the real potential to 

save lives and to help thousands of people avoid the 

physical, mental and emotional suffering of cancer.

Tax-Free Donations From An IRA 

Did you know... that the Pension Protection Act of 

2006 was extended through 2011? It allows you to 

satisfy minimun distribution requirements with charitable 

contributions up to $100,000 directly from your 

IRA to a qualified charity, like the Cancer Research 

Center. It also provides that any contribution made 

by January 31, 2011 can count for 2010 minimum 

distributions. These contributions don’t increase your 

adjusted gross income. You must be at least age 70.5 

to qualify. Ask your financial advisor for more information.

Raymond Freese, a local builder, developer, and president of Boone 

County Lumber Company, was a member of the CRC Board of Trustees 

for 21 years, beginning in 1973. He worked tirelessly to secure 

funding and support for various CRC projects and was especially 

devoted to the CRC Gala. Ray lost his sister and several close friends 

to cancer and decided to do what he could to fight this lethal disease. 

Unfortunately, he lost his own battle with cancer in 1994. After 

his death, the CRC Board of trustees set up the Raymond W. Freese 

Memorial Fellowship. This fellowship is awarded to promising postdoctoral 

scientists for an initial one year appointment, with reappointment 

for additional years based on performance. The stipend is 

comparable to those awarded by the Health Sciences Center at the 

University of Missouri - Columbia. The major research project is prostate 

tumor therapy with genetically altered Salmonella. Applicants 

are expected to have (1) expertise in molecular genetics of bacteria, 

(2) willingness to develop a mouse testing model, (3) skills in writing 

grant proposals and manuscripts, (4) skills in presenting research 

results at national meetings, and (5) skills to develop projects independently 

and creatively.
