About Bandpass FiltersThe use of bandpass filters is one of the simplest and mosteconomical way to transmit a well-defined band of light and toreject all other unwanted radiation. Their design is essentiallya thin film Fabry-Perot interferometer formed by vacuumdeposition, and consists of two reflecting stacks separated by aneven-order spacer layer.Because the Fabry-Perot filter is essentially Lorentzian inshape, the cut-on and cut-off slopes are shallow and the rateof attenuation in the out-of-band blocking range lockingband, we introduce more cavities into the construction of ourstandard dielectric bandpass filters.MinimizingWavelength ShiftAmbient temperature and optical path geometry are importantfactors to consider in selecting or specifying bandpass filters.Ambient TemperatureThe center wavelength of a bandpass filtershifts linearly with changes in ambienttemperature—up with a positive changeand down with a negative change. Thetemperature coefficient chart belowgives a good approximation of the shiftin wavelength for a given temperaturechange. To counter these effects, Andover hasdeveloped temperature controllers thathelp to maintain ambient temperature ofpassband filters. (For more information, seepage 23.)Temperature WavelengthShift Coefficient0.035Temperature Coefficient (nm/°C)0.0300.0250.0200.0150.010200 400 600 800 1000 1200Center Wavelength (nm)Angle of IncidenceThe central wavelength of the all-dielectric Fabry-Perot filter shifts lower with an increase in theincident angle. The amount of shift depends uponthe incident angle and the filter’s effective index(N*). This feature can be very useful in tuning afilter to the desired central wavelength. Use theformula below to determine the wavelength shiftof a filter in collimated light with incident anglesup to 15°.Where: λθ = Wavelength at angle of incidenceλ0 = Wavelength at normal incidenceNe = Refractive index of external mediumN* = Effective refractive index of the filterθ = Angle of incidenceWhen using a filter with non-collimated light, thewavelength shift will appear somewhat less thanthat of collimated light at the same angle. In acone of light, only the central ray is normal to thesurface while all others are increasingly off-angle.To approximate this shift, use this same formulaand divide the results by two. (This approach worksin systems where the full cone angle is up to 20°.)Andover Corporation Order online: www.andovercorp.com Call toll-free in the US: 1.888.893.9992

Total QualityControlTo ensure total quality control, most of our equipment is either custom designedor custom constructed to our exacting specifications.State-of-the-Art.TestingAndover Corporation tests start at the raw material and continue through thefinished product. Most interferometers rely on laser light to produce interference fringes. Since theydo not transmit the laser wavelength, many bandpass filters cannot be measuredwith these instruments. To solve this problem, we have constructed a computerized, tunable white light interferometer that produces actual transmitted wavefrontinterferograms of filters from 350nm–1100nm.Our on-site environmentalchamber allows us toperform routine and customproduct testing at varioustemperatures and humiditylevels to ensure compliance toyour custom specificationsor MIL standards.Questions? Image Quality .FiltersAstronomical observations, video monitoring systems, highresolutionphotography, and other imaging applications requirecomponents of the highest optical quality. To meet these demandingrequirements, Andover Corporation has developed a line of custom“image quality” filters using high-grade optical material that is bothstriation and inclusion-free. The surfaces are ground and polished to atransmitted wavefront of λ/4 per inch and parallel to 30 arc seconds orbetter. The internal coating positions are optimized and the exterior surfacesantireflection coated to eliminate multiple images and fringe patterns. Forvery high-resolution applications, we can also provide image quality filterswith a transmitted wavefront of λ/10 and parallelism of 10 arc seconds. All filterscome withtest documentationFor quality custom products, please call 1.888.893.9992 (US) or +00.1.603.893.6888 (Outside US)Antireflective CoatingsThin-film coatings are an effective wayto limit reflections while also improvingoptimal system performance. AndoverCorporation manufactures a variety ofantireflective coatings designed for highefficiency, mechanical durability, andenvironmental stability.Image quality filters are ideal for applications that require highresolution, such as astronomical observations. To make theseproducts, we fabricate high-quality optical glass to ensurethe substrate is extremely flat and parallel, and then applyantireflective coatings on the external surfaces to reduce ghostimages and maximize energy throughput. Commercial qualityfilters can have the same spectral characteristics as image qualityfilters, but they are designed for use in instruments rather thanimaging applications.% ReflectanceBroadband visible Antireflection5.04.03.02.01.00UncoatedCoated400 450 500 550 600 650 700Wavelength (nm)26 Andover Corporation Order online: www.andovercorp.com Call toll-free in the US: 1.888.893.9992

In contrast to the metallic type, absorption-typefilters achieve their optical density by absorbing light withinthe substrate. For this reason, thickness is a key determinantof opacity. Dichroic filters• Provide sharp separationbetween transmission andreflection• Spectrally stable at changingtemperatures and humidity• Available in custom designs, colors, angles of incidence, substrates, dimensions, andcoatingsFar more durable than dyed plastic or gel-coated types, dichroicglass filters have a hard dielectric film created by thin layers ofmetallic oxides. These color separation filters are designed toisolate certain regions of the visible spectrum, reflecting ratherthan absorbing unwanted frequencies. As a result, they not onlyproduce pure, intense color but also withstand the heat andUV energy from high-energy light sources. Commonly usedas light balancing filters in color enlargers and photocopiers, dichroic filters are suitable for any application that requiresseparating the incident energy into two or more light beams.GENERAL SPECIFICATIONSSize ToleranceThicknessMin. Edge filters• Useful for redirecting aparticular band of light• Provide steeper transitionthan color glass filters• Offer coverage over the400–1000nm rangeOften referred to as long wave pass (LWP) and short wave pass(SWP) filters, edge filters provide a well-defined transition betweenreflecting and transmitting regions. Essentially a modified quarterwavestack, the filters use interference effects rather than absorptionto isolate their spectral bands. Because edge filters will shift shorterwith an increase in the angle of incidence, they are a good choicefor fine-tuning the cut-on/cut-off wavelength.
