Orfeo QuagliataOrfeo Quagliata is an industrial designer and founder of Phuze, a glass company located in MexicoCity. His work explores color, light, geometric and organic forms with playful, interactive designs.Phuze’s OM and Phuzion <strong>collection</strong>s offer innovations in hand-blown crystal and fused glass jewelry,accessories, lighting, vessels and sculptural objects. In 2004, Orfeo’s work was featured in MetropolitanHome’s “Design 100” issue and his designs continue to gain international recognition.Born in San Francisco in 1972, Orfeo is <strong>the</strong> son of acclaimed Italian glass artist Narcissus Quagliata.He began working with glass at age 12 as an apprentice to his fa<strong>the</strong>r and continued to work with himon myriad projects over <strong>the</strong> years, including <strong>the</strong> fabrication and installation of a crystal apex dome for<strong>the</strong> last architectural work of Michelangelo Buonarroti — <strong>the</strong> Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli edei Martiri in Rome. Most recently, Orfeo fabricated parts of <strong>the</strong> 870 sq. meter dome “Wind, Fire andTime” in Kaohshiung, Taiwan.
Early influences drawn from his fa<strong>the</strong>r’s work and also his grandmo<strong>the</strong>r, Herta Jalkotzy, an award-winningjewelry designer in <strong>the</strong> Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop) − collective founded by GustavKlimt. Orfeo’s designs follow an inherited tradition in glass and jewelry while articulating a bold, maverickstyle uniquely his own.Prior to college, Orfeo apprenticed under Catalonian glass artist José Fernandez Castrillo where helearned cold-working techniques that have become a cornerstone in his designs. He later returnedto San Francisco to study industrial and furniture design at California College of <strong>the</strong> Arts (CCA) earninga BFA with high distinction in 1999. At CCA, Orfeo studied with <strong>the</strong> prominent furniture designerand architect, Chris Deam. He served as Deam’s design assistant for three years, on projects whichincluded work for Airstream and Herman-Miller. Orfeo has taught at both CCA and Dale Chihuly’sPilchuck Glass School in Washington State.
