Once the dust settles on his buildingproject, Doug plans to upgrade to a Carrera 4 so he canshare the road with the snowplows.Jim and Nancy Stockhouse – Jackson, WYI bought my first Porsche when I was 19 years old in 1975.It was a 1972 red and black 914 with 25,000 miles. I wasin college at the University of Wyoming and thought I waspretty hot. I did manage to pay my own way through sevenyears of college while driving a Porsche. It did not havemuch power but boy did it corner nice. I drove that 914 forfive years and sold it for $700 more than I paid for it. Thatwas pretty hot. I’ve never been able to do that again.I sold the 914 just before graduating for two reasons: I hadtrouble finding people to work on it in small town Wyomingand I needed the money to set up at dental practice. But Ialways wanted another sports car, so after five years I wasready to get another one. I knew I wanted more power andI thought I should get something that I could get servicedin small Wyoming town. So I bought a new 1985 Corvette…plenty of power, but rough. Rough riding and rough shifting(I bought an automatic because my wife, Nancy, likes autosas well.) The Vette was absolutely worthless in winter. Justtouch the accelerator in snow and the back end would gosideways.I moved to Jackson from Riverton in 1990 which made formore winter and less driving of the Vette. It now has 29,000miles. I wanted my next sports car to be more refined, onethat I could drive year round and had power (and heatedseats), so I bought my current Porsche, a 1999 C4 Coupe inFebruary (winter) 2001 with 8200 miles. Heated Seats! Notas much power as the Vette (only 298 hp) but so much nicerto drive and to get in and out of. I got the stick shift (sorryNancy) and it is just a delight. But never to be content, afterdriving it through the first winter on the rough Jacksonroads (I’ve decided that’s not nice to my Porsche), so I onlydrive it on good roads in the winter now. The heated seatsare still a must…that maybe all wheel drive isn’t a must andI would like a little more umph. Enter thoughts of buying aCayman with less weight and the same horsepower. I needto test drive one first though but Ken hasn’t offered yet.(Hint, hint).... continued on Page 7Old Faithful Porsche
PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGIONMeet the Members Jim and Nancy Stockhouse continued.News Flash: Roving spy photographer captures irrefutableevidence of Jim in the driver’s seat of Ken’s Cayman. Jim testdrove the Cayman (all-be-it for only 60 seconds) and thenparked the car for the group picture in Sun Valley. A closelook at this photo shows Ken in the background, anxiouslyguiding the car into the space, and the culprit, eerr, I meanJim, driving the car. When confronted with this evidence, allJim could say was “Explain the actual meaning of the worddrive and besides, that’s my story and I’m sssstticken to it”.- Dyno Services- Car & Tire Storage- Track Car Preparation- Private Driver Instruction- Track Day SupportNAPA AUTO PARTSASPEN AUTOMOTIVE990 S.
