PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGIONBodean Barney-Secretary, Edie Walker-Vice Presidentand Robin Koop-Treasurer, our new Club Officers. Theyare the nuts and bolts of the organization and keep ourclub functioning. Thank you for caring and serving. Anda special thank you to my lovely wife Robin for helpingme so much over the past year—especially with “meet themembers”. I know she regrets volunteering on that one.Tim Sullivan, our Membership Chairman. He handlesour membership rosters, keeping current phone numbers, addresses and greets new members as they come intothe club. Thank you for keeping us organized and ourmembership roster complete.President’s MessageWell, this being my first President’s message, I want tothank all of you for putting your trust in me to Pilot ourRegion. I hope to live up to your expectations. I trulywelcome any suggestions or recommendations that anyof you may have for the coming year. It is better for anyorganization to have multiple views and opinions on whatshould be done in the future, what we need to change andwhat to keep doing that our members are enjoying. Pleasefeel free to contact me by phone or email to discuss anythoughts or ideas that you may have. I really would liketo hear from you! This Region owes a great deal of gratitude to many peoplefor keeping it operating. I would like to take a few minutesto thank these people for their service. First and foremostto Edie Walker for keeping this club running over the pastten years. If it was not for Edie, we would not even exist asa club today. Next, to the work of Joel Duling, our exitingpresident. Joel started the rejuvenation of the club a littleover two years ago. I still can remember his initial call tome asking if there was any interest in revitalizing the cluband if I would consider being an officer. If it wasn’t forhis interest in the club we wouldn’t have our newsletter,Wednesday get togethers, the club tours or other eventsthat we all enjoy. And because of that, I personallywouldn’t have had the chance to have met many of thepeople in the club whom I now call friends.Everyone knows this club does not run because of thepresident alone. It takes many helpers, members andofficers to put on events, handle the finances, manage themembership roster, keep the web site up to date and putthe newsletter together. Some of these people you mayknow and some of them I’m sure you have never met. Please thank these people next time you see them for theirtime and effort. Every one of them deserve a raise for thework they do (of course, all officers and chair people arenon-paid volunteers), but they are the type of people whowouldn’t accept a raise even if it was offered to them.John Allen, our Web Site Master, has done a terrific jobat updating our site and keeping it current. He reallydoes a professional job—if you haven’t viewed the site, please take a look. There are usually more pictures of theevents that we can post on the site than we can put intothe newsletter. I’m sure John loves it when we get finishedwith an event and he gets an e-mail from me. He knowswhat’s coming next (more things to post). Thank you John, for maintaining such a wonderful site.Brett Lewis, for putting our newsletter together. Brettand I work very closely when compiling the newsletter—probably in his opinion, too closely. He arranges the pages, puts in artwork, squeezes in the ads, fills in articles thatwe have space for and adds the numerous articles that Isend him. Somehow he makes it all fit. It is his hard workthat makes the newsletter look the way it does. And I forone, think it looks wonderful. He does all of this, and heisn’t even a member of the club. Thank you Brett for yourexceptional work and your patience with me.Linda Bein, our Zone representative. She has takennumerous calls regarding club activities and “how do wedo this” questions. She is the biggest cheerleader of ourclub! Thank you for the help and generous support.Beta Graphics, located in Idaho Falls, does the printing ofour newsletter. They work quickly to get the newsletterprinted and out to our members. Thank you for yoursuggestions in making our newsletter more affordableand a better quality publication.Lastly I’d like to thank all of the members who attendedour Wednesday get togethers, Annual Banquet, ClubTour and American Le Mans Series Race in Salt Lake City.Without participants, a club just isn’t much of a club. I hopewe have even more club participation in the future. If youdecide to participate, I can almost guarantee you will havea good time and meet some wonderful people. The clubhas a nice selection of events for 2007. Be sure to look atthe club calendar and watch for the upcoming events inthe newsletter. Then block out your calendar, bring yourPorsche and come have some fun. Hope to see you all ata future event soon!KenOld Faithful Porsche

PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGIONMEET THE MEMBERSMike and Nancy FaemsMike and Nancy Faems fulfilled a lifelong dream when theymoved to Jackson Hole last winter from the Chicago area. They love the beauty, the adventure, and most of all thepeople, that make this valley unique. What’s more, is therea better place on earth to drive a Porsche?Mike realized another lifelong dream when he started racingsix years ago. Nancy has a slightly different perspective. She says giving Mike a three-day Skip Barber race schoolas a birthday present was the biggest mistake she’s madein her life. Mike’s a regular at the PCA Club Races at RoadAmerica, Sebring, Road Atlanta, various other Midwesttracks, and competed at the inaugural club race at Daytonain October. His favorite is Road Atlanta. “Combine the kinkat Road America with the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, andyou get the hill at Road Atlanta. It’s kinda like driving offa ten story building, and turning right when you reach 100mph on the way down.” Mike’s the founder and inspirationfor “Hey Wait For Me Racing”, (HWFMR.com) a cyber raceteam that began on Rennlist.com and now has more than150 members around the world. The Faems stable includes a 944S2 built to PCA F Classspecs, and two of the last air-cooled 911s – a ’97 993 C2 caband a ’97 993 C2 coupe. When he’s not driving, racing ortalking about Porsches, Mike’s an avid hiker, fly fishermanand amateur photographer.Nancy enjoys spoiling their three grandchildren, hiking, reading, bridge, and tennis, and has recently taken up golf.Mike too enjoys a round of golf, but has been known to walkoff the course once he has lost an entire box of balls.Currently they live slope-side at Snow King, but arefulfilling yet another lifelong dream -- building their ownhome with views of Glory, Rendezvous and the Grand.(Nancy, ever the savvy one, has limited the garage spaceto two Porsches). Nancy and Mike are thrilled to be in theshadow of the Tetons, and look forward to connecting withother Yellowstone Region members.Scott AndersonWhen I was a little boy, growing up in Boston, I use to sit ona brick wall with my best friend Kevin and watch the carsgo by. Each of us would pick a number and count the carsas they would come up the hill and pass us on those long, hot summer days. The number of the car we picked wouldbe the car we were destined to have for life. Some of the carswere junkers for sure and certainly gave us many hours ofentertainment. Little did I know that our game would bethe beginning of a lifetime obsession. As I grew older, I always thought Porsche was one of thoseunattainable cars I could only dream about. You knowthe cars movie stars drove that they parked at their crib.Needless to say, the only crib I lived in was the hand medown from my nine brothers and sisters. After returning to school to continue my education, all forthe dream of actually being able to “live” in Jackson, myobsession grew. Purchasing eight cars on ebay, all withinthe past three years, certainly made me feel like a CorkyWalker wannabe - buying cars below invoice, only to sellfor a profit. All until the day I stumbled upon my 911 with the 993 bodyupgrade. This was the car I thought I had to be ultra-wealthyto afford. (There are definitely days that I still wonder – butthat’s another story.) Anyway, here it sits. Me and my 1987Porsche. It’s a looker for sure. I am not sure which I enjoymore… pulling into a gas station and having pimply littleface me step out to the ahhh’s of the onlookers (ta-daa!!!)or actually being able to drive it. I tell my friends I try toremain inconspicuous, but they laugh every time they seeme and my dog Caleb driving around town. Neon yellowthey say – how inconspicuous is that? My friend Kate tellsme that I need counseling – she thinks eight cars in threeyears is whacked. I can only agree with her just a tiny bit.Little does she know I found a support group instead. Here’s to the Yellowstone Porsche club and to Ken andRobin, my new leaders. Someday, I hope to step up to aturbo… then I’ll be cool.10Old Faithful Porsche

PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGIONby more than one person and that signaled to me thatmaybe a few other members may also be unaware ofthe quality of fuels they are buying. Why don’t wetake a look at all of these questions and you can bethe judge whether Shell or Chevron fuels are worththe extra cost for your car. I will only concentrate onthese two brands since they are the major brandedfuel companies in our area. Other brands may meetthe Top Tier fuel requirements but since I did not havethe time to examine the practices or interview theengineers from the other companies, I will make noclaims for them. Here are some of the most commonquestions and comments that were made.Ken’s CornerTop Tier Fuel.Is it worth the money? On a recent club driving tour, I was surprised tolearn of the confusion regarding gasoline used by ourmembers. Most of the members that I had discussionswith thought that all fuels were about the same. Theyeven asked why I would pay four cents per gallonmore for branded gas. Let’s take a closer look at whatmakes fuels different. To be able to answer thesequestions with more expertiseand use indisputable factsin this article, I have donesome research on the subject.I have spoken with severalfuel engineers as well as themarketing and the fuel research departments atboth Shell and Chevron. I contacted both engine andemissions specialists at General Motors. And I have alsoresearched many Internet web sites for informationon this particular subject. Now let it be known, I amnot a fuel engineer, but I did stay at a Holiday Innlast night…just kidding. First, let us get some of thequestions that were being asked of me on the tour andduring some private conversations (implying that Iwas not very smart for buying branded gas) out ontothe table. I might add, that these questions were askedQuestion 1 – Shell and Chevron do not even haverefineries in our area. So how can we possibly get theirgas and representative additives at our stations?Answer 1 – Correct. Shell andChevron do not have refineries inour area. Their fuels, along withgeneric gas (take 91 Octane forinstance), all come out of the same“depots” which are located inWyoming and Idaho (Pocatello for Chevron). As thefuel is being loaded onto the tanker truck, the Techron(for Chevron) and Shell’s proprietary additive package(for Shell V-Power) are injected into the fuel to givethe ratio that Shell or Chevron requires. So the fuelyou buy in Wyoming has the identical additive blendas the fuel that comes out of the Shell or Chevronrefineries in California. The non-branded fuels are alsoinjected with their specified fuel additives as they areloaded onto the tanker trucks, although they may notnecessarily meet the Top Tier Detergent Standards setby major car manufacturers,. By the way, the injectionof additives into the fuel as it is being loaded onto thetanker truck is a common industry practice acrossAmerica.Q2 – The fuel is delivered in no-name gas tanker trucksto the branded gas stations. The tankers then go fromthe branded station to the generic station to deliverfuel. Therefore, all stations must get the same type offuel.A2 – True. The fuel is deliveredin tanker trucks that are notowned by Shell or Chevron. Thetanker truck is owned by an independent contractorwho is hired by Shell or Chevron or their brandedOld Faithful Porsche11

PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGIONmarketers to deliver their fuels. Each tanker truck(which looks like one large tank) actually has two tofour smaller tank compartments inside. Each tank canbe loaded with a different fuel. A fully loaded tankertruck in our area holds 11,000 gallons of fuel in 5-6separate tanks (because of the ability for the tractortruck to tow a second separate tanker trailer). The fueldelivered to Shell and Chevron stations contain onlytheir branded fuels. When the tanker truck deliversfuel to a non-branded station, they deliver an entirelydifferent blend of detergent fuels out of another tank. The fuel will not contain Techron or Shell’s V-Powerpackage as an additive nor the same percentage ofdetergents.Q3- Shell and Chevron stations could put generic fuelinto their tanks with no one ever knowing and thensell it for branded gas and keep the profit.A3 – Shell and Chevron put proprietary“markers” in their gas. The oil companiesmonitor their individual stations bysampling the fuel that is dispensedout of the gas station’s fuel nozzle. The fuel is then sent to a lab (typicallyan independent one) and analyzed for the respectivecompany. If the marker is not present, this wouldindicate that the station does not have the branded gasthat they are suppose to have and the station wouldthen lose their franchise. The labs are able to detectvery small changes to the fuel, so if another brand offuel is mixed into the station’s fuel tank the lab wouldbe able to detect it. Both Shell and Chevron are veryprotective of their fuels and the quality of productthey deliver to their customer.Q4- Even if additives in the fuel are different, they arenot worth the increased price.A4 – The EPA requires aminimum concentration level ofdetergent additives in gasoline.Shell Regular and Plus gasoline’scontain more than two times the cleaning agentrequired by the EPA. Shell V-Power has more than fivetimes the amount required by the EPA. At that level,Shell V-Power actually cleans the engine as you drive, giving it the ability to clean up deposits that havealready built up on intake valves and fuel injectors leftbehind by low detergent gasoline’s. Chevron gasoline’scontain concentrations of the Techron additive whichremove deposits lower quality gasoline’s can leavebehind as well. In addition, Chevron has the abilityto remove deposits in all three grades of its gasoline. The generic brands generally contain the absoluteminimum amount of detergent required by the EPAand therefore do not have the ability to clean theengine of deposits.Q5 – When I mentioned “Top Tier” fuel to most of ourmembers, their answer was; what is Top Tier?A5 – “Top Tier” detergent gasoline helps keep enginescleaner than gasoline’s containing the minimumamount required by government regulations. Thishelps provide optimal fuel economy, performanceand reduced emissions. Top Tier detergent standardswere developed by BMW, GM, Honda and Toyota andwere aimed at reversing the national trend towardlower gasoline additive concentrations. Both Shelland Chevron meet the standards of Top Tier in all oftheir grades of fuel with Chevron being the first fuelcompany to meet the Top Tier Requirements. Threeother brands that pass the Top Tier Requirements inour area are Texaco, Conoco and Phillips. Genericbrands generally do not meet Top Tier standards inany of their grades of fuels.Q6 – Are branded fuels really worth the extra money?A6 – If helping your fuel injectors to atomize the fuelto their fullest; keeping intake runners and valvesclean so fuel does not adhere to the deposits andthen drip into the cylinders; keeping performanceto the maximum and emissions to the minimum byburning fuel more efficiently; then using a qualityfuel should be important to you…but is it? Depositson the inside of an engine aresimilar to plaque on the insideof an artery. It takes a longtime for the deposits to becomenoticeable, but there will neverthe less be a continual decreasein performance whether it is inan automobile or in a human. With proper fuels in a car ordrugs in a human, symptomscan be reversed.Lastly, one word on octane: All of our cars are designedto run on a specified octane and is generally statedon the inside of the gas filler flap/door and owner’s12Old Faithful Porsche

PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGIONPorsche wins Popular ScienceMagazine’s AwardPorsche has just won the “Best of What’s New” forthe Automotive category in the December issueof Popular Science Magazine. The award waschosen from 100 tech innovations with Porschebeing awarded the Grand Award. This award wasgranted to Porsche for the 911 Turbo in recognitionof its great technical advances. The award waschosen for the development and implementationof Porsche’s variable turbine geometry (VTG).Previous applications of this concept encountereddifficulties due to high operating temperatures—not a problem easily solved with contemporarymaterials. After nearly two decades, aerospacegradematerials have allowed the progression ofVTG technology to the point that it can now reliablyoperate in the higher-temperature environment ofturbocharged gasoline engines. Porsche’s versionof VTG in the 2007 Turbo incorporates theselatest material applications, plus a sophisticatedcontrol algorithm. The combination produces theadvantages of both small and large turbochargers, generating a much wider plateau of torque andproviding quicker response compared to theprevious generation 911 Turbo, while providingthe reliability of fixed-vane turbochargers.I had the privilege of driving one of our membersnew 997 Turbo in November and I can assureyou that there is a huge leap in performance overthe Turbos of the past (unbelievable as that mayseem). Old Faithful Porsche21

It has a roller bearing crank andonly 20,000 original miles. It was bought by a wellknown celebrity, so I can only imagine what thenew owner paid. Some people enjoy modifying their Porsches for roadracing, rallying (both on and off road), auto-crossing orjust to have a unique car.
