Academic Competition InvolvementFaculties continued to offer our students opportunities to test themselvesagainst the very best in the State and in Australia. Outcomes included PrizeWinners, Place Getters and High Distinctions. Competitions included:-• Tim Winton Young Writers Award.• University of New South Wales writing competition.• The Australian Mathematics Competition.• National Chemistry Quiz.• ICAS Science Competition.• Australian Chartered Accountants Economics Competition.• Australian Geographic, National Geography Competition.• Participants in Year 12 Performing and Visual Arts Perspectives.Academic Extension Program (AEP)A total of ninety five students were involved in the Academic ExtensionProgram and remained at Churchlands to sit their ATAR exams. Studentswho were in AEP in Year 10, 2010 define this AEP cohort. These studentswere either in the Maths/Science stream or the English/Humanities stream, while some were in both streams. Exit data provides the most reliableindicator of student progress of this program. The following table representsa snapshot of our AEP students’ ATAR performance in 2012.ATAR Bands Number of Students Percentage of theAEP groupAbove 99.00 12 13%95.00 – 99.00 28 30%90.00 – 95.00 21 22%Below 90.00 34 35%It is interesting to compare the median ATAR of this group compared tothe Churchlands Median ATAR and also that of Perth Modern, a totallyselective entry school, with a Year 12 ATAR population of 170 (roughlydouble our AEP cohort size).Median ATAR for AEP group: 91.1Median for CSHS: 85.5Median for Perth Modern School: 95.3Clearly the needs of gifted students are being addressed at Churchlandscomparably to a fully resourced GATE school which is an exceptionalperformance by our teachers.GATE MUSICChurchlands SHS music program had a highly successful year once againin 2012. Our ensembles performed at a high standard at the annual Festivalperformances and were rated outstanding on most occasions. Similarly, the concert seasons during the year were highly successful, showcasingthe talent of our students and staff. We moved into our new facilities which were officially opened in the middleof the year. The older music facilities have been upgraded and refurbishedand the quality of specialist music teaching spaces is unparalleled in thehistory of the program and in public schools in Perth. The support andadvocacy from Principal Neil Hunt was a significant contributor to the scopeand success of the project and the support of school Business ManagerArlene Thomas in project managing the refurbishments of the old facilitiesis greatly appreciated.A major indicator of the success of our program is the exit results of ourYear 12 students. The following provides the highlights of their performances.• Churchlands Music students were ranked first in the state based onStage 3 WACE Music results in 2012.• Our top two students were ranked 1st & 3rd in the state in their stage3 music exams.• Churchlands provided almost 6% of the state Stage 3 music students. This year’s cohort was smaller than typical due to difficulties with theearly GATE selection process.• 25% of our students scored 75% or better in their ATAR.• Their average mark was 75.26% which was 9.45% above like schoolsand 12.7% above state average, an outstanding result for such alarge group.• Every stage 3 music student scored 55% or better in their final scaledscore.Churchlands aims to attract the best possible music students to its programand endeavours to retain most of them through to Year 12. Such dataprovides inherent testimony to the quality of the program. The following tables show the interest in applying to the program, thenumber of gifted students selected to do the program and the retention ofthese students through to Year 12.This table shows the number of applications to music GATE over thepast three years.Year ofEntryNumber ofApplicants2011 2012 2013 2014241 297 250 250This table shows the number of GATE applicants who met the standardand enrolled.Intake Year 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012GATE 34 31 26 32 51 56EnrolmentsChurchlands SHS is currently funded to select up to sixty four GATE studentsto enter Year 8 each year. This number changed for the 2010 intake as canbe seen from the table above when previous intakes were limited to thirtytwo. The school maintains a standard which all students must meet, oftenresulting in not all positions being filled. However this has advantages asfuture GATE students join the program at any stage from Year 9 to Year12.This table shows the percentage of students who have remainedenrolled in the course from Year 8.Year 8 Intake Year Final or current Year Retention2006 Year 12 2010 88% in 5 years2007 Year 12 2011 79% in 5 years2008 Year 12 2012 58% in 5 years2009 Year 12 2013 70% in 5 years2010 Year 11 2013 85% in 4 years2011 Year 10 2013 90% in 3 years2012 Year 9 2013 95% in 2 yearsThe retention target (70% in Yrs 8 to 10 and 90% in Yrs 11 to 12) generalisesinto 63% from Year 8 to completing Year 12 Stage 3 Music. From the tableabove it can be seen that, except for the 2008 intake, Churchlands meetsthis target. With the increased cohort from 2010 it may well be that werevise this target upwards.SPORTING PERFORMANCESome outstanding Team results from Churchlands in 2012 include:• Winning the ‘A’ Grade Swimming Carnival.• Winning the ‘A’ Grade Athletics Carnival.• Netball – The Year 8 and 9 teams compete regularly and enjoy plentyof success against surrounding and country schools. The school entered teams in various other competitions with varying degreesof success. These include cricket, football boys and girls, basketball, rugby, water polo, volleyball, soccer boys and girls, tennis and squash.2012 saw the successful continuation of the AFL program instigated byMr Chris Tan. A measure of its popularity is that over seventy Year 7applicants apply every year and the program has a very high retention rate. The program also offers plenty of playing opportunities with four teams inaction in 2012.6
