student informationOur Extension Swimming Program continues to thrive and provides thebackbone for our carnival success. Working in partnership with Surf LifeSaving WA and Cadets WA, our students had the opportunity to be activein the community and improve their swimming ability. This included:• Swimming training and stroke improvement.• Surf Rescue Qualification.• Resuscitation Qualification.• Recreational Skippers Ticket.Applications for 2013 reached a total of sixty. This was reduced to a squadof thirty.Rottnest Channel SwimmersMany of our swimmers also complete the Rottnest Channel Swim eachyear, either in a team or as part of a duo. In <strong>2012</strong>, eight students made thecrossing with age group winners in both duo and team categories.Individual Sports PerformersThe following students have been identified as Elite Athletes by the WesternAustralian Institute of Sport (WAIS) and were heavily engaged in Interschool,State, National and International competitions throughout <strong>2012</strong>.GymnasticsGymnasts performed strongly at National Championships. FransceskaFusha won four medals at International Development level 10AA, GillianChan moved to a higher level; Matthew Richardson was State U14 Championand a member of WA U14 Level 7 Men’s Gym team that won gold; he alsowon four individual gold medals on various apparatus. Emily Little, havinggraduated in 2011, has gone on to represent Australia at the LondonOlympics and to achieve one of Australia’s best ever results in Gymnasticsat an Olympics.DivingMaddison Keeney had an outstanding year. She was chosen to representWA at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival and at the Elite JuniorChampionships to win two gold medals and one silver medal. She gainedthe title of Junior A Diver of the Year. She represented Australia at the 19thFINA World Junior Championships to finish in 5th and 18th place.KayakingShannon Reynolds won four gold medals and one silver medal in the U18group at the <strong>2012</strong> Australian Canoe Sprint Championships.CyclingIn his first year of competing in U19 Brendon Meney was top road rider forWA and 2nd in Australia for first year competitors and was invited to competeat several International Cycling Competitions.Ashley McKay competed in U17 to finish 2nd in Time Trial, 4th in Criterion,6th in Road Race at State Championships and 12th in National RoadChampionships.Sam Welsford joined WAIS in June <strong>2012</strong> and cycled strongly to be chosenin the WA track team to contest the Australian Youth Olympics in Jan 2013.TrampoliningJayden Cooney received a bronze medal in her first international competitionat the Indo Pacific Championships, Double National Age Team Memberfor Trampolining and Synchronised Trampolining and 3rd in Junior EliteDouble Mini and 2nd in U17 Trampoline at the <strong>2012</strong> Australian Championships.Synchronised SwimmingJade Haynes-Love continues to make progress at National Level insynchronised swimming.Enrolment TrendsThe following table shows enrolment patterns by year group as of theFebruary census in the years 2008 to 2013. The past four years have seena stabilising of the total enrolment figure for Churchlands SHS at aroundthe 1450 mark. This is due to the arrival of the half cohort in 2010 whichwill maintain this effect for the next couple of years. Of significant note, isthe surge in Year 8 enrolments in <strong>2012</strong>/13. This is due to the increasedenrolments now appearing in our feeder primary schools. It is clearly evident that Churchlands SHSexceeds the retention rate of the rest of the state. Retention rates, exceptfor 2010, exceed 100% due to new students moving into the Churchlands’local intake area. The schoolhad the following foci:• Improvement in overall student attendance rate from 2010 to <strong>2012</strong>.• Increased percentage of students in the Regular (90%) attendancecategory from 2010 to <strong>2012</strong>.• Decreased percentage of students in the Moderate (60 - 90%)attendance category from 2010 to <strong>2012</strong>.As can be seen by the “Attendance Summary Table” above for 2010 to<strong>2012</strong> the school has met these targets. The school was below ‘Like Schools’in 2010 in most categories, yet has made significant improvements to beabove ‘Like Schools’ in all categories in 2011 and <strong>2012</strong>. To be 7% abovein the Regular (90%) attendance category and 2% below in the moderateattendance category this year is an excellent achievement.7
